Aujourd’hui, on continue la série des albums remarquables sortis en ce début d’année, avec IMPERIAL, le cinquième album du groupe suédois de métal progressif, SOEN.
Sorti le 29 janvier 2021, via Silver Lining Music, IMPERIAL est l’équilibre parfait entre les chansons heavy avec de riffs lourds et sombres et les morceaux mélodiques et douces, avec des guitares aériennes et des lignes vocales d’une beauté inouïe.
Des refrains grandioses et entêtantes, la voix du chanteur Joel Ekelöf superbe et majestueuse, nous plonge dans un univers poétique et provocatif à travers huit magnifiques chansons puissantes qui incitent à la réflexion sur notre monde actuel, la condition humaine, la lutte contre les oppressions, les inégalités et l’indifférence existante.
Privés de concerts comme tous les artistes, Joel Ekelöf (chant) et Martin Lopez (batterie), Lars Enok Åhlund (claviers et guitare), Oleksii « Zlatoyar » Kobel (basse) et Cody Ford (guitare solo) ont travaillé sans relâche, parfois jusqu’à 12 heures par jour pour réaliser un album sans faute. Aucun détail n’est laissé au hasard.
Lumerian, Monarch, Antagoniste se démarquent par des riffs agressifs, une section rythmique féroce et englobent de changements épiques de mélodies élégantes. Illusion est une sublime balade puissante avec des riffs floydienne et une extraordinaire mélodie. Modesty frappe par la beauté de violons et Fortune par ses guitares mélancoliques et ses ligne vocales plein d’émotion.
IMPERIAL est un album puissant et plein d’émotion, intense et contemplatif, un album mémorable et essentiel que les fans de métal progressif doivent absolument écouter.
Fin 2020, j’ai eu le plaisir de discuter via Skype avec l’homme qui se déchaine derrière la batterie, Martin López et évidement, j’ai essayé d’apprendre plus sur ce chef d’œuvre. Découvrez l’interview.
Comment vas-tu dans cette période de pandémie mondiale ?
Martin : Je vais bien. C’est une situation bizarre, mais d’une façon ou d’une autre, nous nous y habituons et plus nous nous y habituons, les gens commencent à ne plus respecter les restrictions et nous revenons à la situation initiale. Ce qui n’est pas bon du tout.
Avant de parler de votre nouvel album, une incursion dans le passé – comment vous avez formé SOEN ?
Martin : En fait, j’ai formé le groupe tout seul, il y a longtemps. J’ai écrit 4 ou 5 chansons, puis j’ai commencé à jouer avec Kim, notre ancien guitariste. Puis, on est tombés sur Joel et avec lui, on a commencé à prendre les choses au sérieux et construire notre chemin en tant que groupe.
Votre cinquième album Imperial, sort le 29 janvier 2021. Quel a été le processus d’écriture ?
Martin : Ce n’était pas si différent des autres albums qu’on a faits. J’écris beaucoup de musique à la maison et quand je sens que j’ai assez de matériel pour un album, je rencontre Joel et ensemble on écoute toute la musique et on garde seulement ce qu’on pense être bon pour un album SOEN et on jette le reste. Cette fois, il y a eu des heures et des heures de musique, peut-être 30 chansons, donc on a éliminé au fur et à mesure pour garder cette liste de 8 titres. On garde juste le meilleur ; c’est la meilleure façon de faire un bon album. Puis Lars se joint à nous et nous a aidés à structurer et à tout organiser. Ensuite, on a impliqué le bassiste Oleksii et le guitariste Cody.
Et avec la pandémie, vous avez pu enregistrer en condition normales ?
Martin : A cause de la pandémie, il n’a pas été possible de se réunir tous dans le studio pour enregistrer. Joel, Lars et moi-même, on n’habite pas très loin un de l’autre, donc on a pu se rencontrer et travailler ensemble sur l’album, mais les autres gars ont dû enregistrer séparément dans leurs pays. Parce qu’ Oleksii habite en Ukraine et Cody vit au Canada.
Ils ont enregistré chacun de leur côté et ils nous ont envoyé les fichiers et nous les avons rajoutés ici. Mais c’était ok. C’est assez facile de travailler de cette façon, même s’il y a des milliers de kilomètres qui nous séparent. Cela fonctionne comme notre discussion aujourd’hui. Tu es à Paris et moi à Stockholm et nous pouvons nous parler comme nous étions dans la même pièce.
Vos chansons parlent toujours de la condition humaine, des problèmes de société, quelle a été la principale inspiration cette fois pour écrire Imperial ?
Martin : L’inspiration se trouve toujours dans ce que nous vivons à présent. Nous avons toujours été très intéressés par la façon dont l’humanité fonctionne et comment la société réagit. Comment nous acceptons d’être menti et nous choisissions de ne rien faire, alors que nous pouvons être vraiment en colère quand nous perdons un match de football. C’est à peu près le thème de l’album.
Il y a un fil conducteur qui relient les 8 chansons ?
Martin : Pas vraiment, mais je pourrai dire que c’est toujours la réalité qui les relie. On n’écrit pas de la fantasy ou des histoires d’amour qui ne sont pas vrais. On essaie de dire quelque chose qui compte pour nous et qui compte pour les autres qui n’ont pas de voix dans les médias. Parler de l’injustice dans le monde ne déclenche pas beaucoup des clicks et de likes. Ce n’est pas la même chose que parler de la nouvelle coupe de cheveux de Cristiano Ronaldo… là tout le monde va parler et liker. Mais dès qu’il y a un sujet qui compte, il est tellement ennuyeux pour les réseaux sociaux de le relayer. Des voix ne peuvent pas être vraiment entendus. Nous essayons de faire tout ce que nous pouvons pour donner vie à ces questions.
Quel est le sens du titre de l’album Imperial ?
Martin : Il représente bien la musique puissante et brute. Il représente la façon dont nous vivons, le fait que nous sommes toujours gouvernés par des empires, des empires qui ne sont plus des pays mais des sociétés qui décident à peu près comment façonner le monde, sans que nous ayons beaucoup à dire.
Vous avez toujours des visuels impressionnants pour les pochettes de vos albums et cette fois vous avez choisi ce magnifique serpent. Est-ce que le serpent est un symbole pour vous ?
Martin : Nous utilisons le serpent depuis le début de notre groupe, il est très représentatif pour nous. Comme connotation religieuse ainsi que d’être cette belle créature que nous craignons tous parce qu’il est si individualiste et à qui il est si difficile de se connecter. Parce qu’il n’est pas fluffy et chaud. Nous pensons qu’il peut bien représenter notre musique.
Quel est ton morceau préféré ?
Martin : Cela dépend de la journée et de l’humeur. Je pense qu’aujourd’hui, ça pourrait être Lumerian hier, c’était Illusion. Cela dépend vraiment de la journée, de ce que je fais. Si je suis avec les enfants, ou seul, si je suis heureux ou triste. Notre musique englobe plein de couches et des émotions différentes. Je pense que nous avons une chanson pour chaque état d’esprit.
Ma chanson préférée est Monarch, que peux-tu me dire sur cette chanson ?
Martin : Monarch est peut-être la chanson la plus heavy que nous avons faite. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de positivité dans cette chanson, mais c’est une chanson forte. Le message est important et parle de la façon dont les garçons, les hommes sont élevés dans ce monde, de ce que les valeurs traditionnelles de la société attendent d’un homme et comment grandir sous ces valeurs. C’est vraiment difficile car vous n’êtes pas censé de montrer de l’émotion et l’empathie, vous êtes censé être fort et juste un bon combattant et cela signifie briser un jeune homme depuis le début et d’introduire beaucoup de problèmes dans la société. Cela donne de la peine. C’est un thème dont nous n’avons pas beaucoup parlé, c’est bien de l’exposer aussi.
Modesty est beaucoup plus slow et mélodique
Martin : Oui et en fait c’est une chanson qui est née d’un riff de métal que j’ai écrit et que Lars a transformé en arrangement des cordes. C’est une chanson différente du reste de l’album et se distingue par un énorme refrain très puissant. Joel chante vraiment d’une façon incroyable, comme il ne l’a jamais fait auparavant sur un autre album. J’aime beaucoup cette chanson.
Quel est ton premier souvenir musical ?
Martin : Mes parents ont un ami qui était batteur, un batteur vraiment incroyable. Je l’ai vu jouer quand j’étais petit et j’ai été impressionné par ces énormes tambours et son puissant qui sortait. Je me souviens qu’on est allé un fois chez lui et me je suis assis derrière lui, je l’ai regardé jouer. C’est une sorte de premier souvenir que je ne pourrai jamais oublier. Dès que j’ai pu, j’ai commencé à jouer à des différents types de percussions et de la batterie.
Et ton idole ?
Martin : J’en ai beaucoup. Quand j’étais enfant, l’album d’Alice Cooper – Poison est sorti et j’aimais beaucoup. Ma sœur écoutait beaucoup de Kiss et j’aimais aussi. Mon père écoutait beaucoup de Pink Floyd et l’album The Wall est peut-être l’album le plus important pour moi. Je ne peux pas vraiment dire que j’ai une idole. J’idolâtre la musique mais j’essaie de ne pas idolâtrer les gens car si tu les rencontres plus tard tu risques d’être déçu. Je pense plutôt à la musique et la mélancolie de l’époque où je l’ai entendue pour la première fois.
Quel est le vêtement préféré dans ton placard ?
Martin : Un sweat à capuche noir. Je porte depuis mon enfance et j’ai toujours un avec moi. Je m’y identifie et c’est confortable.
Ta playlist en ce moment ?
Martin : En ce moment, c’est plutôt des chansons de Noël car j’ai des enfants. J’ai écouté beaucoup Dio, Scorpions ces derniers temps. Il fait nuit très tôt, c’est l’hiver et j’essaie d’écouter de la musique qui me donne chaud au cœur, beaucoup de vieux albums de métal et des ballades qui m’aident beaucoup passer cette période.
Ton plus grand souhait pour 2021
Martin : Bien sûr, mon plus grand souhait est que les gens cessent de mourir à cause de cette maladie et que nous revenons à la normale. Et que nous nous asseyons et que nous réfléchissions à ce qui s’est passé, à quel point nous n’étions pas préparés et comment nous avons eu l’occasion de vraiment nous unir.
De point de vue musical, je voudrais faire la tournée et jouer sur scène, rencontrer et communiquer avec les gens.

Martin : Mélodique, heavy et différent.

Today, we continue the series of remarkable albums released at the beginning of this year, with IMPERIAL, the fifth album of the Swedish progressive metal band, SOEN.

At the end of 2020, I had the pleasure of chatting via Skype with the man who goes wild behind the drums, Martin Lopez, and of course, I tried to learn more about this masterpiece. Check out the interview.
How are you doing in this crazy times? How is in Sweden with pandemic?
Martin: I am doing fine. It’s a weird situation but somehow, we are getting used to it and the more we get used to it, people are starting to do not care about restrictions, we going back to how it was which is not good at all.
Let’s start with a short introduction about Soen, how did you guys meet and decide to form a band?
Martin: I formed the band by myself many years before. I wrote 4 or 5 songs then I started to play with Kim our former guitar player. We came across Joel and with him we pretty start by taking it seriously and try to making as a band.
Your Fifth album Imperial is out on 29th of January 2021. How was the writing process?
Martin: It was not so different from the other albums that we did. I write a lot of music at home and when I feel that I have enough material to start shaping into an album, I meet Joel and then we go through all music and we just keep whatever we think it is good enough for a Soen album and we throw away the rest.
I think this time we had hours and hours of music, maybe 30 songs and we came up to these eight. We just keep the best; this is the way to make a good album.
Then Lars joined us and help us structure and arrange, and then we get involved the bass player Oleksii and Cody on guitar.
And with pandemic was it difficult to record it?
Martin: It wasn’t possible to gather together in a room due to the Covid situation. I mean Joel, Lars and myself, we leave really close by, so we could meet and write the album pretty much but the other guys have to record in their countries because Oleksii is from Ukraine and Cody lives in Canada. So, they recorded from there and send us the files and we can add them here. But it was ok, we could still work like this, without being in the same room. It’s quite easy to work like this even if there are thousands of km between us. It works in same as we are doing today you are in Paris and me in Stockholm and we can talk to each other as we were in the same room.
Your songs are always talking about life and human condition, our society problems, what was the main inspiration this time to write Imperial?
Martin: The inspiration is always what we went through in that moment. We’ve always been very interested in how the humanity works and how society is, how we are being lied and choose not do anything. Why do we the vast majority accept that just a few having so much and how we can just keep going and accept that while we can be really angry and pissed when we lose a football game. It’s pretty much the theme of the album.
Will you say that there is common thread that connect the 8 songs?
Martin: Not really, but it is always a reality that connects them. We do not write anything about fantasy or love stories that there are not true. We are trying to say something that matters to us and matters to the other people that does not have any voice in media. You know talking about the unfairness in the world is not really giving any click or like. to talk about Cristiano Ronaldo new haircut and you will have everyone talking about it and loving it. But as soon as it is something that matters it is just so boring for the media to pick it up, that voices can’t be really heard. We try to do the little we can to bring these issues to life.
What is the meaning of the title Imperial?
Martin: It represents well the music being really strong and raw. It represents the way we are living, we are still ruled by empires, empires that instead of countries are corporations that pretty much decide how the world is gonna look without us having much to say.
You always have impressive visuals, beautiful art work for the cover. You choose this time this amazing cover with the snake. Is it a symbol for you?
Martin: We have been using the snake since the beginning of our band, it is very representative for us. At start it has as a religion connotation as well as being this beautiful creature that we all fear because it is so individualistic and so hard to connect to. Because it is not fluffy and warm. We think that it can represent our music and it is a great cover.
Do you have a favourite song?
Martin: It is depending on the day and mood. I think today it might be Lumerian, yesterday it was Illusion. It really depends of the day, of what I am doing. If I am with the kids, or alone, if I am happy or sad. Our music has all different layers and emotions. I think we have a song for every state of mind.
My favourite song is Monarch, what can you tell me about this song?
Martin: Monarch it’s the maybe the heaviest song we have done. The message is raw and the music is really strong. There is not much positivity in this song but it’s a great massive song. the lyrical message it’s quite important about how boys, men are raised in this world, what the traditional values of the society expect from a man and how growing up under those values. It’s really difficult as you are not supposed show any emotion and empathy, you are supposed to be strong and just a good fighter and that means breaking up a young man since the beginning and introduce a lot of problems to society that we keep pain for it. It’s a theme that we haven’t really talk about that much, it’s good to get it out there also.
Modesty is much slower and melodic
Martin: Right, it is slower and that came out from a metal riff that I wrote that Lars turn into a strings arrangement. It’s a different song of the rest of the album. It stands out with a huge a powerful chorus. Joel is really singing out like he has never done before on any other album. I like it.
What is your first musical memory?
Martin: My parents have a friend who was a drummer, a really amazing drummer and I saw him play when I was little. My parents went to his place and I sit behind him I watch him playing and that is a kind of first memory that I would never been able to let it go. I was impressed to see these huge drums and powerful sound that came out and as soon as I could, I started playing different kind of percussions and drums.
How about your musical idol?
Martin: I have many, when I was a kid, Alice Cooper – Poison came out and I completely love it. My sister was listening a lot of Kiss, I love them, too. My father was listening to Pink Floyd, and The Wall album is maybe the most important album for me. I can’t really say that I have only one idol. I idolize music and I am trying not to idolize people. The older I get, I understand that you do not have to meet your idol as most of the time you might be disappointed. I rather idolise the music and the melancholy of the time when I heard it for the first time.
Playlist in this moment
Martin: Right now, is quite Christmas songs as I have kids. I listen to some Dio, Scorpions lately. It’s really getting dark early now and it’s winter and I try to listen some music that give me warm, a lot of old metal album and ballad that help me a lot in this moment.
What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?
Martin: A black hoodie. I’ve been wearing since I was a kid and I’ve been identifying. I feel comfy and I always have it with me.
The biggest wish for 2021
Martin: That people stop dying because for this disease and that we come back to normal and sit down and reflect what the hell happened, how unprepared we were and how we had the opportunity to really unite together.
And of course, I would like to tour and go out and play and meet and connect with people
How will you describe Soen in 3 words?
Martin: Melodic, heavy and different.
