C’est avec un grand saut dans le passé et avec beaucoup d’émotion que le groupe de métal AVATAR décidait de terminer, samedi 30 janvier 2021, la série de 4 live streams “An Impossible Concert Experience” proposés pendant le mois de Janvier.
Car après Age of Dreams, le 9 Janvier, Age of Illusions, le 16 janvier et Age of Madness le 23 janvier, les suédois nous présentaient Age of Memories, un live constitué des chansons choisis par les fans dans le 3 premiers albums Thoughts of No Tomorrow (2006), Schlacht (2007) et Avatar (2009)
Et cet « âge de souvenirs » démarrait 20 minutes plutôt avec une opening band qui n’est personne d’autre qu’AVATAR en version plus jeune. Effectivement, on assite à un live set qui nous permet de découvrir leur 1ere et 2ème chanson Hymn to the Victim of the Liar et Soul Prison. Certes, la qualité des images et du son laisse à désirer, mais peu importe, on voit bien la folie furieuse sur scène et l’excitation de fans dans la salle.
AVATAR en Headliner commence à 22 h avec le chanteur Johannes Eckerström allongé sur un canapé qui évoque des souvenirs de leur début, de leur salle de répétition, le « holly temple », comme il l’appelle, là où ils jouaient en sous – vêtements à cause de la chaleur … là où tout a commencé : les rêves, les ambitions…la nostalgie s’installe…
Il rejoint ses acolytes pour démarrer le concert et on comprend vite qu’ils se retrouvent dans la salle de répétions reconstituée. Des affiches de concerts sur les murs, des tapis par terre, une lumière tamisée, la batterie de l’époque Thoughts of No Tomorrow, tout semble authentique… Il y a même une boite de pizza vide et des mouchoirs pour éponger les fronts en sueurs.
Ce soir, exit les costumes, les uniformes et les masques, Johannes Eckerström – chant, Jonas Jarlsby – guitare, Tim Öhrström – guitare, Henrik Sandelin- basse, John Alfredsson – batterie) sont habillées en noir, des chemises et des jeans slims et le maquillage se réduit à des discrets smokey eyes.
Ce soir, on assistera simplement à un concert de heavy metal sans le côté théâtral et fastueux qu’AVATAR nous a habitué dernièrement. Cela fait plaisir de les découvrir de cette manière.
Première chanson qui met déjà le feu est Schlacht. Le son est brut et fort. My Shining Star suit de la même manière. Le groupe est plein d’énergie et en parfaite synchronisation de headbangins.
L’intimité du lieu donne une impression encore plus forte qu’ils jouent vraiment dans notre salon. Avant d’interpréter Strange, Johannes fera un clin d’œil à Simon Andersson, l’ancien guitariste du groupe et qui a écrit cette chanson géniale. Il semble qu’il ne lui a pas tout à fait pardonné le fait de quitter le groupe, mais il lui souhaite la santé et il espère qu’il a achète un billet pour les regarder.
« In the mood for some romance » déclare le chateur pour introduire Die With Me – une chanson fantastique. La voix de Johannes est absolument phénoménale. Les passages de crooner à growl sont impressionnants. D’ailleurs, ce soir on découvrira encore mieux les performances vocales du chanteur charismatique, capable de passer rapidement d’une voix mélodieuse aux grognements death métal ou d’une voix très aigue Halford-iene à une voix grave des ténèbres.
Excellents morceaux, All Hail the Queen et War Song vont clôturer ce premier acte. Johannes affirme que ce dernier est la première bonne chanson qu’ils ont écrite. Les solos de guitare sont immenses, la batterie s’affole à chaque morceau et la basse pulse très fort.
Impeccable présence scénique des musiciens, on ressente la complicité et l’émotion qui les unit. Johannes en fera un peu moins les mimiques du clown, mais il garde sa gestuelle habituelle et les regards perçants à la caméra.
Avant d’entamer le deuxième acte du show, on découvre à l’écran des images des concerts, des voyages, des extraits des vidéos, des photos, de visages jeunes et insouciantes. Des souvenirs précieux du groupe qui nous font très plaisir.
Notons que pratiquement tout le monde a changé de style capillaire : couleur et coupe de cheveux. C’est fun de voir les cheveux boucles d’un Jonas adolescent qui se sont devenu de dreads super longs au fil des années.
Ils se déplacent dans une nouvelle salle pour le deuxième acte. Les lettes lumineuses AVATAR s’allument une par une. Cette fois, ils vont jouer la totalité de leur le troisième album éponyme car les fans ont voté comme cela. Johannes est content car tant de souvenirs ont été réanimés, comme feuilleter un album photo. Et nous aussi, car on découvre des morceaux qu’ils n’ont pas joué live depuis longtemps, voir jamais.
Démarrage avec la puissante Queen of Blades, suivi par The Great Pretender, un morceau punk et punchy, magnifique. Shatter Wings, Relaod, Out of Our Minds, lesperformances sont fantastiques.
Batterie foudroyante, des guitares rougissantes – le duo TIM – Jonas est excellent. J’adore et pour vous dire franchement, je crois qu’Avatar est devenu ce soir mon album préféré.
Johannes fera un toast car il parait qu’Avatar est l’album à écouter quand on boit. Il profitera de nous raconter l’histoire du bidon d’essence dans lequel il boit de l’eau et qui ce soir, a même une caméra attachée, ce qui nous permet de voir des images inédites.
La chanson la plus demandé par les fans est Deeper Down, très intense et qui dégage une énergie monstrueuse. C’est le cas aussipour Revolution of Two, Roadkill. Et quoi dire de Pigfucker, mieux juger par vous-même …
La superbe Lullaby (Death All Over) annoce une fin pleine d’émotion. « Farewell good bye » dit le refrain… Les derniers remerciements, les derniers accords magnifiques joués par Johannes au piano. Et la promesse qu’il viendrons nous voir en personne dès que possible. C’est triste, on n’a pas du tout envie que cela se termine…
La caméra suit Johannes qui traverse les salles pour sortir à l’extérieur. En face, un grand immeuble et un immense cœur allume. Les derniers images nous donnerons un aperçu de tous les scènes utilisées et le backstage, tandis que le groupe continue à jouer la partie instrumentale jusqu’à la fin du générique. Quel final magistral !
Et voilà que la saga Avataruary se termine avec l’Age of Memories. Un show superbe gorgé d’émotion que peut être on n’aurait pas eu l’occasion de voir si ce stupide virus n’était pas là. Voyons donc le bon côté des choses !
On s’est passionné pour ces concerts spectaculaires qui nous ont apportés beaucoup de bonheur, un peu d’espoir et nous ont aidé à passer plus facilement le mois le plus dépressif de l’année.
AVATAR est décidément un groupe qui possède une impressionnante habilité de jouer, beaucoup de talent et de motivation. Avec la musique, la mise en scène, la performance théâtrale et l’implication du groupe à 100%, ils ont témoigné beaucoup d’amour et de respect pour leur public. Bravo et Merci Messieurs !
Le petit mot de la fin… un DVD avec tous ces concerts sera formidable …

On Saturday, January 30,2021, AVATAR ended up the series of the 4 live streams “An Impossible Concert Experience” performed within last January with a jump in time and a lot of nostalgia.
After Age of Dreams, on January 9, Age of Illusions, on January 16 and Age of Madness on January 23, the Swedish presented Age of Memories, a live show consisting of songs chosen by fans from their first 3 albums Thoughts of No Tomorrow (2006), Schlacht (2007) and Avatar (2009).
And this “age of memories” started 20 minutes before 10 pm with an opening band that is nobody else but AVATAR in a younger version. Indeed, we watch a short live set that allows us to discover their 1st and 2nd songs Hymn to the Victim of the Liar and Soul Prison. Of course, the quality of the images and sound is quite bad, but it does not matter as we can see the furious madness on stage and the excitement of fans in the room.
AVATAR in Headliner start at 10 p.m. with the frontman Johannes Eckerstrom, lying on a sofa, that evokes memories of their beginning, of their rehearsal room, the “holly temple”, as he calls it, where they used to play in underwear because of the heat and ventilation … and where it all began: dreams, ambitions…
He joins his band colleagues to start the concert and it is easy to understand that they find themselves in the reconstituted rehearsal room. Concert posters on the walls, carpets on the floor, a blurry intimate light, the drums of the Thoughts of No Tomorrow era, everything seems authentic… There’s even an empty pizza box and handkerchiefs to mop up sweaty faces.
Tonight, exit the costumes, uniforms and masks, Johannes Eckerstrom – vocals, Jonas Jarlsby – guitar, Tim Öhrström – guitar, Henrik Sandelin-bass, John Alfredsson – drums) are wearing black shirts and jeans slim and the makeup is reduced to discreet smokey eyes.
Tonight, we will simply attend a heavy metal concert without the theatrical and glitzy side that AVATAR has accustomed us lately. It’s nice to discover them in this way.
The first song already set the fire: Schlacht. The sound is raw and loud. My Shining Star follows in the same way. The band is full of energy and in perfect synchronization of headbanging.
The intimacy of the place gives an even stronger impression that they really play in our living room. Before performing Strange, Johannes will speak about Simon Andersson, the band’s former guitarist who wrote this awesome song. It seems that he has not quite forgiven him for leaving the group, but he wishes him health and he hopes he has bought a ticket to watch them.
“In the mood for some romance” to introduce Die With Me – a fantastic song. Johannes’ voice is absolutely phenomenal. The passages from crooner to growl are impressive. Moreover, tonight we will discover even better the vocal performances of the charismatic singer, able to quickly move from a melodious voice to death metal growls, from a very high-pitched Halford like voice to a grave tenebrous one.
Excellent tracks, All Hail the Queen and War Song will close this first act. Johannes claims that the latter is “the first song they wrote and did not suck”. The guitar solos are huge, the drums are getting crazy with each song and the bass is pulsing. Great stage presence of the musicians, we feel the complicity and emotion that unites them. Johannes will make less clown faces (it’s normal we are in 2006), but he keeps his usual gestures and piercing glances at the camera.
Before starting the second act of the show, we discover on the screen images of concerts, trips, videos, photos of young and carefree faces. Precious memories of the band that we appreciate.
It should be noted that almost everyone has changed their hair style: colour and haircut. It’s fun to see the curly hair of a teenage Jonas that have become super long dreads over the years.
They move into a new stage for the second act with Avatar letters light up one by one. This time they will play the full third self -titled album because the fans voted like this. Johannes is happy as so many memories have been revived; a photo album has been opened. And we also, because there are songs that have not been played live since long time or never.
It starts with the powerful Queen of Blades, followed by The Great Pretender, a punk and punchy, beautiful track. Shatter Wings, Reload, Out of Our Minds, the performances are fabulous. Raging drums, awesome guitars – the duo TIM – JONAS is great. I love it and to be honest, I think Avatar has become my favourite album tonight.
Johannes will make a toast because it seems that Avatar is a drink and watch album. He will take advantage of telling us the story of the gas canister in which he drinks water and which tonight has a camera attached that allows us to see fun images.
The most requested song by fans is Deeper Down, very intense and exudes monstrous energy. This is also the case for Revolution of Two, Roadkill. And what to say about Pigfucker, better judge for yourself …
The superb Lullaby (Death All Over) anounce an emotional ending. “Farewell good bye” says the chorus… The last thanks, the last magnificent melody played by Johannes on the piano. And the promise that they’ll come and see us in person as soon as possible. It’s sad, we don’t want it to end at all…
The camera follows Johannes as he walks through the rooms to get outside. Opposite a large building and a huge red heart light up.
The last images will give us an overview of all the scenes used and the backstage, while the band continues to play the instrumental part until the end of the credits. What a masterful finale!
And this is how the Avataruary saga ends with the Age of Memories. A superb show, full of emotion; a show that maybe we could not have had the opportunity to see if this stupid virus was not there. So, let’s take the bright side of these crazy times.
We were passionate about these spectacular gigs that brought us a lot of happiness, a little hope and helped us to spend the most depressive month of the year more easily.
AVATAR is definitely a band with an impressive ability to perform, a lot of talent and motivation. With the music, the staging, the theatrical performance and the 100% involvement of the band, they showed a lot of love and respect to their audience. Well done and thank you Gentlemen!
And just an idea …all this on a DVD with all these Ages would be Fantastic!
