“ERODED” new album by LIZZARD- Interview with William Knox

Le 19 février 2021, le groupe de rock prog français, LIZZARD, sort un nouvel album intitulé ERODED, via Pelagic Records.

Avec ce quatrième opus, les trois musiciens originaires de Limoges :  Katy Elwell (batterie), Mathieu Ricou (chant/guitare), William Knox (chant/basse) nous invitent d’entreprendre un voyage magnifique à travers 11 chansons parfaitement construites avec des structures rhythmiques complexe, des riffs efficaces et des mélodies accrocheuses.

ERODED est censé apporter la lumière au bout de tunnel dans un monde érodé et pour délivrer ce message LIZZARD n’a rien laissé au hasard. Dans leurs compositions on retrouve un large spectre des sonorités : des ambiances sombres mais aussi lumineuses et subtiles, des riffs bruts et rugueux (Blowdown, Flood), des éléments progressifs et raffinés (Corrosive, Hunted, The Decline) et des mélodies plus aériennes et mélancoliques (Eroded, Usque Ad teram). Chaque instrument est remarquablement mis en valeur et la performance vocale est impecable.

Le Art Work de la pochette et sa palette des couleurs illustre très bien le thème de l’album – l’état actuel du monde avec l’ocre, le brun et le vert qui sont usés, drainés, érodés… tandis que le jaune vif et l’orange et les parties blanches centrales représente une déclaration d’espoir, d’optimisme.

ERODED est un album qui dégage une énergie intense et une émotion profonde, un album que je vous invite à écouter sans attendre. Et pour apprendre un peu plus sur LIZZARD, découvrez l’interview avec le basiste, Will Knox avec qui j’ai eu le plaisir de m’entretenir par téléphone, il y a quelques semaines.

Comment ça se passe pour toi cette période Covid19?

Will : J’habite pas loin de Limoges et on ne peut pas trop se plaindre car on est à la campagne. On peut sortir dans la nature tous les jours, donc c’est plutôt cool.

Tu pourras nous présenter un petit historique de LIZZARD ?

Will : Avec Katy on joue ensemble depuis une vingtaine d’années. On était dans d’autres projets et puis, on a rencontré Matthieu, il y a une quinzaine d’années. A l’époque, on cherchait un chanteur et donc Matthieu a rejoint le groupe en tant que chanteur et quand le guitariste est parti, Mathieu a pris la guitare. C’était le début de LIZZARD. On a sorti un premier EP Venus en 2008, le premier album Out of Reach en 2012 puis, Majestic en 2014 et Shift est sorti en 2018 et puis voilà Eroded qui sortira en février 2021.

Ça fait donc un bout de temps que vous êtes ensemble. Quel est votre secret ?

Will : On s’entend très bien, il n’y a jamais eu besoin de changer de line up. On a tous les trois le même objectif. Tant qu’on progresse sur chaque album et qu’on va un peu plus loin et le groupe grossi une peu plus à chaque fois, pour nous c’est suffisant.

Quand est-ce que vous avez commencé à écrire ERODED ?

Will : On a tourné début 2018 et fin 2018. On a commencé à composer les premiers morceaux entre ces 2 tournées. 2019, c’était l’année de composition et studio, donc on a eu la chance de finir d’enregistrer bien avant la pandémie. Le mix a été fait au premier confinement quand tout le monde était chez soi. Le producteur était au studio et donc on faisait des sessions studio, de live streams et pendant que lui mixait, nous on pouvait écouter en réel chez nous. C’était qu’une adaptation mais ce n’était pas trop mal comme méthode de travail. 

L’album a été enregistré durant un long mois d’isolement volontaire aux Castle Studios en Allemagne, comment est-ce que vous avez eu l’idée d’aller là-bas ?

Will : L’idée vient du producteur Peter Junge avec qui on avait travaillé sur l’album précèdent. A l’époque, il était venu en France à Bordeaux pour l’enregistrement et puis, il a mixé chez lui en Allemagne. Pour ERODED, on voulait prendre un peu plus de temps et comme il habite carrément dans le studio, il pouvait avoir plus de temps là-bas. Donc, il nous a booké un mois de studio et non seulement ça nous a permis de sortir de nos habitudes d’enregistrer en France, mais cela nous a coûté un peu moins cher que de louer un studio ici.

Vous travaillez mieux quand vous êtes tous ensemble toujours dans espace de répétition. Quel est votre processus d’écriture ?

Will : Mathieu compose beaucoup de son côté. Les idées de départ, sont des riffs des guitare, et puis on se retrouve tous les 3 ensemble. Quand on est tous ensemble, il y a une sorte d’alchimie entre les 3 membres, chacun apporte ses idées et ça permet de sortir quelque chose qui plait à tout le monde et l’identité du groupe est équilibré.

Eroded veut dire usé, fatigué, pourquoi ce titre …

Will : Le thème de l’album c’est l’érosion et ce qui est érodé, c’est la relation entre l’humanité et son entourage, la planète. Non seulement cette relation est brisée, mais aussi la planète est en train de s’éroder à cause de notre influence. L’album parle un peu de ça et comment on pourrait réconcilier avec la petite lumière au bout du tunnel. Ça part d’un point sombre pour aller un petit peu vers la lumière.

Je trouve l’album plus sombre au début et qui devient plus optimiste vers la fin. Il y a une connexion entre les chansons ?

Will : C’est comme un thème global et ensuite chaque chanson peut être prise comme un chapitre, d’une même histoire. Après ça peut aller d’un morceau très lourd de métal jusqu’au morceau très ambient, on n’a pas tort de mélanger plusieurs ambiances dans un même album.

L’idée s’était de trouver l’ordre des morceaux qui soit plus uplift que down. Ce n’est pas toujours facile de trouver l’ordre qui va bien mais on est assez contents de résultat.

Tu as un morceau qui signifie un peu plus pour toi ?

Will : Blowdown et Avalanche sont les morceaux qui pour moi, représentent le mieux l’album. Je sais que pour Katy c’est plutôt Blue Moon et pour Mathieu c’est plutôt Hunted, donc il y a plusieurs avis. Les premiers retours qu’on a eu des chroniqueurs sont que beaucoup de gens ont de morceaux préfères différents. C’est cool car cela montre qu’il y a de morceaux pour tous les gouts.

Mon préféré c’est Blowdown et aussi le videoclip qui transmet un message très fort. Est-ce que tu as un souvenir particulier de tournage de cette video ?

Will : La vidéo a été un peu chamboulé car on avait un scenario plus développé à la base, mais on ne pouvait pas le mettre en place à cause de confinement. On a changé donc plusieurs fois de scénario et on a fini par être obligés de tourner que tous le 3 avec Charles Mills qui a tout filmé et monté, alors que à la base on avait d’autres acteurs pour jouer dedans. Mais on est très contents de résultat. 

Vous avez d’autre projets de vidéo ?

Will : Oui, il y a un 3eme clip qui va sortir pour Blue Moon. La moitie de clip est tourné dehors et l’autre moitie c’est nous en train de jouer le morceau. On est assez contents de résultat et on a hâte que cela sort.

Justement les concerts nous manquent beaucoup en ce moment, est-ce que tu t’es souviens de votre premier concert ensemble ?

Will : Le tout premier a été un concert privé entre amis mais après le vrai concert c’était dans le centre-ville de Limoges pour la Fête de la Musique. C’était cool car il y a eu beaucoup de monde. A l’époque quand tout le monde sortait pour la Fête de la Musique. Et le dernier concert c’était juste avant le confinement, on a fait un petit festival de métal à Nantes. Le dernier souvenir du monde d’avant on va dire.

Est-ce que tu as une scène ou un festival préféré ou tu aimeras jouer un jour ?

Will : il y a beaucoup de festivals qu’on n’a pas encore fait, on a fait des petits surtouts. En France on aimerait faire Hellfest. A l’étranger, il y a beaucoup qui sont très bien aussi mais pour l’instant on ne se projette pas trop sans savoir si on va pouvoir tourner. On verra s’il est possible de tourner cette année on tournera sinon, on va se mettre à composer pour le prochain album.

Vous avez publié récemment une playlist qui est très varié Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine , est-ce que ce sont les artistes qui vous ont influencés ?

Will : Oui, pour beaucoup d’entre eux, ce sont nos influences. Cette playlist on va la mettre à jour une fois par mois, on va rajouter de morceaux, enlever d’autres. On va essayer la faire tourner une peu. L’idee est de présenter les influences des de trois membres du groupe.

Ton morceau rock- métal préféré en ce moment… 

Will: Meshuggah – «I». C’est un morceau qui dure 20 minutes et je peux écouter en boucle.

Est-ce que tu as une icone rock qui t’inspire pour ton style vestimentaire ?

Will : Pas vraiment. En fait, on était adolescents pendant les année 90s, la scène grunge, les jeans déchirés, les T-shirts superposés à la Kurt Cobain mais appart ça personnellement, je ne suis pas très attentif niveau vestimentaire. Très souvent, c’est juste un jean bleu et T-shirt noir et puis basta.

Et en ce moment, tu as un vêtement que tu attrapes toujours pour sortir ?

Will : Oui, un hoodie noir.

Votre merchandising est très sympa, vous avez envisagé à faire une collection spéciale pour Eroded ?

Will : C’est une bonne idée mais après il faudra avec qui on pourra travailler pour faire ça. C’est toujours bien de développer le merchandising.

Pendant le confinement est-ce que tu as découvert une nouvelle passion ?

Will : Pendant le premier confinement quand on avait le droit de faire 1 km pendant une heure par jour, j’ai profité pour sortir dans la nature et j’ai commencé à prendre des photos macro : des insectes, des fleurs, toujours en macro et j’aime beaucoup faire ça. Je pense que je vais continuer même quand on n’est pas confinés.

J’ai vu tes photos sur Instagram et elles sont très belles. Quel matériel tu utilises ?  

Will : J’utilise un iPhone8 et j’ai un petit objectif macro qui se clipse sur le téléphone. Il faut se rapprocher très près des insectes, à quelques centimètres pour que ça fonctionne

Après cette période de live Stream, comment est-ce que tu vois le futur de la musique ?

Will : Je pense que ça va se calmer mais pendant quelques années on sera peut-être obligés de porter de masques en concert et au début peut-être on aura que des concerts assis. Puis au fur et à mesure, j’espère qu’on va comprendre mieux ce virus et le maitriser pour qu’on puisse faire de concerts sans danger. Je pense qu’on va pouvoir y arriver fin 2021 début 2022. C’est vrai qu’on ne connait pas très bien ce virus, il a l’air d’être beaucoup plus virulent qu’on croyait, plus que la grippe ou les autres coronavirus. Je pense qu’on aura encore des mauvaises surprises mais on sera capables de continuer les concerts plus au moins comme avant. Ça va juste prendre plus de temps. Il faudra être patient.

Les gens vont quand même revenir dans les salles de concerts

Will : oui j’espère que les gens vont revenir dans les salles de concerts. Ce n’est pas notre truc les live Stream. Nous, on a besoin de l’énergie des gens. Je pense qu’il faudra penser différemment, de s’adapter mais, je pense qu’obligatoirement on va revenir vers les vrais concerts.

The French prog rock band LIZZARD release a new album entitled ERODED, on February 19, 2021, via Pelagic Records. 

With this fourth album, the three musicians from Limoges: Katy Elwell (drums), Mathieu Ricou (vocals/guitar), William Knox (vocals/bass) invite us to embark on a magnificent journey through 11 perfectly constructed songs with complex rhythmic structures, effective riffs and catchy melodies.

ERODED is supposed to bring light to the end of the tunnel into an eroded world and to deliver this message LIZZARD did a wonderful job. In their compositions, we find a wide spectrum of sounds: dark atmospheres but also bright and subtle ones, rough and fierce guitar riffs (Blowdown, Flood), progressive and refined elements (Corrosive, Hunted, The Decline) or airy and melancholic melodies (Usque Ad teram, Eroded). Each instrument is remarkably highlighted and the vocal performance is impressive.

The Art Work of the cover and its colour palette illustrates very well the theme of the album – the actual state of the planet with ochre, brown and green that are worn, drained, eroded… while bright yellow and orange and the central white parts represent a statement of hope and optimism.

ERODED is an album that release intense energy and deep emotion, an album that I invite you to listen to urgently. And to learn a more about LIZZARD, check out the interview with the bassist, Will Knox with whom I had the pleasure to discuss by phone some weeks ago.

How are you doing in this Covid19 period?

Will: I live not far from Limoges and we can’t complain too much because we’re at country side. We can go out and enjoy nature every day, so it’s pretty cool.

Could you let us know a short introduction about LIZZARD?

Will: With Katy we’ve been playing together for about 20 years. We were in other projects together and then we met Matthew about 15 years ago. At the time, we were looking for a singer and so Mathieu joined the band as a singer and when the guitarist left, Mathieu took the guitar. That was Lizzard’s beginning. We released a first EP Venus in 2008, the first album Out of Reach in 2012 then Majestic in 2014 and Shift was released in 2018 and then Eroded will be released in February 2021.

So you’ve been together for a while. What’s your secret?

Will: We get along very well, there was never a need to change line up. The three of us have the same goal. As long as we progress on each album and we go a little further and the band gets a little bigger each time, for us it’s enough.

When did you start writing ERODED?

Will: We toured in early 2018 and late 2018. We started composing the first songs between these two tours. 2019 was the year of composition and studio and we had the chance to finish recording well before the pandemic. The mix was made during the first lockdown when everyone was at home. The producer was in the studio, so we did studio sessions, live streams and while he was mixing, we could listen live at home. It was just an adaptation but it wasn’t too bad as way of working.

The album was recorded during a long month of voluntary isolation at Castle Studios in Germany, how did you get the idea to go there?

Will: The idea comes from producer Peter Junge with whom we had worked on the previous album. At the time, he had come to France for the recording and then he mixed at home in Germany. For ERODED, we wanted to take a little more time and since he lives in the studio, he could have more time there. So, he booked us a month of studio and not only this allows us to get out of our recording habits in France, but it cost us less than renting a studio here.

How is your writing process?

Will: Mathieu composes a lot on his side. The first ideas are guitar riffs, and then we meet all three together. When we are all together, there is a kind of alchemy between the 3 members, everyone brings his ideas and it allows to release something that pleases everyone and the identity of the group is balanced.

Eroded means worn, tired, why this album title …

Will: The theme of the album is erosion and what is being eroded is the relationship between humanity and its surroundings, the planet. Not only is this relationship broken, but the planet is also eroding because of our influence. The album talks a little bit about that and how we could reconcile with the light at the end of the tunnel. It starts from a dark point to go a little towards the light.

I find the album darker at first and that becomes more optimistic towards the end. Is there a connection between the songs? 

Will: It’s like a global theme and then each song can be taken as a chapter, of the same story. After it can go from a very heavy metal track to the very ambient song, it is not wrong to mix several moods in the same album.  The idea was to find the order of the songs that is more uplift than down. It’s not always easy to find the order that goes well but we’re pretty happy with the result.

Do you have a song more important to you?

Will: Blowdown and Avalanche are the songs that for me, best represent the album. I know that for Katy, it’s rather Blue Moon and for Mathieu it’s rather Hunted, so there are several opinions. The first feedback we got is that a lot of people have different favourite songs. It’s cool because it shows that there are songs for all tastes.

My favourite is Blowdown and also the videoclip that conveys a very strong message. Do you have a special memory of shooting this video?

Will: The video was a little modified because we had a more developed scenario at the base, but we couldn’t put it in place because of lockdown. So, we changed the script several times and we ended up shooting only 3 of us together with the director Charles Mills who filmed and edited everything, while at the base we had other actors to play in. But we’re very happy with the result.  

Do you have any other video projects?

Will: Yes, there’s a third music video coming out for Blue Moon. Half the video is filmed outside, in the nature and the other half is us playing the song. We’re pretty happy with the result and we can’t wait for it to come out. 

We miss the concerts very much at the moment, do you remember your first concert together?

Will: The very first was a private concert with friends but after the real concert it was in downtown of Limoges for La Fete de la Musique. It was cool because there were a lot of people. Back then when everyone was going out for La Fete de la Musique. And the last concert was just before the lockdown, we did a small metal festival in Nantes. The last memory of the world before we will say.

Do you have a favourite stage or festival or will you like to play one day?

Will: there are a lot of festivals that we haven’t done yet, we’ve done mostly small ones. In France we would like to do Hellfest. Abroad, there are many that are very good too, but for now, we do not project too much without knowing if we will be able to go on tour or not. We’ll see if it’s possible to tour this year otherwise we’ll start to write the next album.

You recently published a playlist that is very varied Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, are these artists that influenced you?

Will: Yes, for many of them, they are our influences. We will update this playlist once a month. we will add new tracks and remove others. The idea is to present the influences of the three members of the group.

Your favourite rock-metal song…  

Will: Meshuggah – “I.” It’s a song that lasts 20 minutes and I can listen to it over and over again

Do you have a rock icon that inspires you for your style of dress?

Will: Not really. In fact, we were teenagers during the 90s, the grunge scene, ripped jeans, layered T-shirts, Kurt Cobain style but personally, I’m not very attentive to fashion. Very often it’s just blue jeans and black T-shirt and that’s all.

And right now, you have a piece of clothing that you always grab to get out?

Will: Yes, a black hoodie.

During the lockdown, did you discover a new passion?

Will: During the first lockdown when we were allowed to do 1 km for an hour a day, I took the opportunity to go out into the nature and I started taking macro pictures: insects, flowers, always in macro and I really like to do that. I think I will continue even when we are not confined.

I saw your pictures on Instagram and they’re very beautiful. What equipment do you use?   

Will: I use an iPhone8 and I have a small macro lens clipping on the phone. You have to get very close to the insects, a few inches away for it to work

After this period when we have only concerts in live stream, how do you see the future of music?

Will: I think it will calm down but for a few years, we may have to wear masks in concerts and at the beginning maybe we will only have sitting concerts. Then as we go along, I hope that we will better understand this virus and master it, so that we can do concerts safely. I think we will be able to get there at the end of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022. It is true that we do not know this virus very well, it seems to be much more virulent than we thought, more than the flu or other coronaviruses. I think we will still have some bad surprises but we will be able to continue the concerts more or less as before. It’s just going to take longer. We’ll have to be patient.

People will come back to the concert halls

Will: Yes, I hope people will come back to the concert halls. It’s not thing the live Stream. We need people’s energy. I think we will have to think differently, to adapt but, I think that we will necessarily go back to the real concerts.
