Une pluie glaciale mêlée à des flocons de neige tombe sans interruption sur Paris, ce vendredi 8 Avril 2022. Le temps idéal pour rester chez soi, siroter un café bien chaud et d’écouter A Loner, le dernier album de HANGMAN’S CHAIR sorti en février dernier.
Mais non, on ne peut pas, car justement c’est aujourd’hui que le groupe francilien nous a invité vivre en live l’expérience de ce nouvel album qu’on a adoré. Il est donc hors de question que la météo sordide nous empêche de profiter de l’occasion. On s’est fait donc violence et direction Trabendo, la petite salle située dans le nord-est de la capitale.
On arrive trop tard pour le set Emptiness qui se produisait en ouverture de la soirée. C’est le tour Author & Punisher de faire son show. Ils remplacent au pied levé Crown, malheureusement obligé d’annuler à cause des cas Covid 19 dans leur team.
Author & Punisher, est le projet de Tristan Shone, ingénieur mécanique et musicien originaire de San Diego. Il fabrique lui-même ses instruments qu’il appellent « drones et dub machines ».
On le retrouve donc derrière une curieuse machine métallique – une sorte de mix entre des platines, une imprimante, un synthé – dotée des nombreuses manettes, boutons et câbles. C’est marqué dessus, « These machines kill fascists ». Il est accompagné par un guitariste.
Le son, dark et lourd, un peu apocalyptique. Ce mix de doom, métal indu, noise et électro est assez spécial, contrasté et très futuriste mais j’avoue, ça casse un peu les oreilles. La scène sombre est balayée de temps en temps par de grands spots aveuglants. Une reprise de « Give me a reason » de Portishead est très apprécié par le publique.
Une expérience étonnante et étrange. Pour se faire une idée, je vous invite à écouter son dernière album Krüller, sorti en février 2022.
Short break et Hangman’s Chair entre en scène. Cédric Toufouti (chant et guitare), Clément Hanvic (basse), Julien Chanut (guitare), Mehdi Thépegnier (batterie) démarrent l’intro instrumentale de An Ode to Breakdown, le titre d’ouverture de A Loner. L’atmosphère est sombre et pesante. L’éclairage fourni par les spots arrière crée un joli effet silhouettes à contre-jour.
Ce soir, visiblement la priorité est au nouvel album avec pas moins de six titres extraits de A Loner dont les quatre premiers étant joués à la suite : après ce démarrage avec An Ode to Breakdown, ils enchaîneront avec le superbe Cold & distant, le très lourd Who wants to die old et le très mélodique Storm Resounds.
Le son est massif mais une peu chaotique, les guitares sont lourdes, la batterie résonante, la voix claire, mélodique et puissante. Ce cold doom du groupe français nous enveloppe et crée un sort de cocon intimiste.
Les nouveaux morceaux seront suivis d’une incursion dans la passée avec 3 morceaux issus du précédent opus, Banlieue Triste : Sleep Juice, Naive et 04/09/16. Entre chaque morceaux les cris et les applaudissements de public sont de plus en plus forts.
Julien Chanut avec sa belle guitare transparente est expansif, il bouge et il saute partout. Clément Hanvic à la basse est bondissant et chauffe la salle sans cesse. Ils s’approchent dangereusement du bord de scène en faisant des grands gestes de manches des guitares et basse. Attention aux coups sur la tête et aux appareils photo.
Mehdi Thépegnier envoi du lourd. Il frappe avec grande frénésie dans se fûts, tout en faisant des grimaces. Le frontman Cédric Toufouti hormis quelques head banging de temps en temps, reste le plus calme de la bande.
Il ya une sorte d’énergie magnétique qui se dégage ce soir. La foule captivée bouge comme hypnotisé. Pas de communication avec le public entre les chansons, juste la musique lente, élégante et atmosphériques qui s’enchaine.
Pour la fin, on replonge dans A Loner avec Second Wind et A Thousand Miles away – ce dernierdébute avec le solo de Julian (cette chanson parle du décès de son père), un morceau long et envoutant qui se termine dans un total tourbillon de riffs, une dernière déflagration sonore qui met le publique KO.
Il n’y aura pas de rappel car tous les sets avez pris un peu de retard, donc, il est temps de quitter les lieux.
HANGMAN’S CHAIR confirme live ce soir leur évolution vers un son unique, leur propre vision sonore construite avec des mélodies superbes, des riffs tranchants, des rythmiques cadencés, des ambiances froide et mélancoliques couronnés d’une immense dose d’émotion. Hypnotisant ! A revoir bientôt.

A freezing rain mixed with snowflakes falls without interruption on Paris, this Friday, April 8, 2022. The perfect time to stay at home, sip a hot coffee and listen to A Loner, the HANGMAN’S CHAIR latest album released in February 2022.
But no, we can’t, because it is precisely today that the French Band invited us to the live experience of this new album that we loved so much. It is therefore out of the question that the sordid weather prevents us from taking advantage of the opportunity. So, let’s go to Trabendo, the small venue located in the north-east of the capital.
We arrive too late for the see Emptiness ‘s set that opens the evening. It’s Author & Punisher’s turn to do its show. They replace Crown, who unfortunately were forced to cancel because of Covid 19 cases in their team.

So, we find him behind a curious steel machine – a kind of mix between turntables, a printer, a synth – equipped with the many controllers, buttons and cables. It’s marked on it, “These machines kill fascists.” He is accompanied by a guitarist.
The sound, dark and heavy is quite apocalyptic. This mix of doom, indus metal, noise and electro is quite special, contrasting and very futuristic but I admit, it breaks the ears a little bit. The dark stage is swept away from time to time by large blinding spots. A cover of Portishead’s “Give me a reason” is much appreciated by the audience. An amazing and strange experience. To get an idea, I invite you to listen to his latest album Krüller, released in February 2022.
Short break and HANGMAN’S CHAIR arrive on stage. Cédric Toufouti (vocals and guitar), Clément Hanvic (bass), Julien Chanut (guitar), Mehdi Thépegnier (drums) start the instrumental intro of An Ode to Breakdown, the opening track of A Loner. The atmosphere is dark and heavy. The lighting provided by the rear spotlights creates a nice against-the-light silhouette effect.
Tonight, obviously the priority is the new album with no less than six tracks from A Loner including the first four being played in a row: after this start with An Ode to Breakdown, they will continue with the superb Cold & Distant, the very heavy Who wants to die old and the very melodic Storm Resounds.
The sound is massive but a little chaotic, the guitars are heavy, the drums resonant, the voice clear, melodic and powerful. This cold wave doom of the French band is wrapping us and creates an intimate cocoon spell.
The new tracks will be followed by an incursion into the past with 3 tracks from the previous opus, Banlieue Triste: Sleep Juice, Naive and 04/09/16. Between each songs the screams and applause of the audience are louder and louder.
Julien Chanut with his beautiful transparent guitar is expansive, he moves and he jumps everywhere. Clément Hanvic on bass is leaping and constantly warming up the audience. They approach dangerously the edge of the stage by making big gestures with the necks of guitar and bass. Beware of blows to the head and cameras.
Mehdi Thépegnier sends the heavy sound. He hits his drums strongly, while making lots of grimaces. The frontman Cédric Toufouti remains the calmest, except for a few head banging from time to time.
There is a kind of magnetic energy that is coming out tonight. The captivated crowd moves as if hypnotized. No communication with the audience between songs, just the slow, elegant and atmospheric music.
For the end, we dive back into A Loner with Second Wind and A Thousand Miles away – the latter begins with Julian’s solo (this song is about the death of his father), a long and captivating track that ends in a total whirlwind of riffs, a last sound explosion that puts the public KO. There will be no Encore as all the sets stared later than scheduled, so it’s time to leave the premises.
HANGMAN’S CHAIR confirms live tonight their evolution towards a unique sound, their own sound vision built with superb melodies, sharp guitar riffs, heavy rhythms, beautiful, cold and melancholic atmospheres crowned with an immense dose of emotion. Hypnotic! To be seen again soon.
