Depuis la sortie de l’album Marauder en 2018 et l’EP A Fine Mess en 2019, on scrutait attentivement les réseaux sociaux pour avoir des nouvelles d’INTERPOL.
Aujourd’hui, le groupe New Yorkais annonce la sortie d’un nouvel album The Other Side of Make-Believe (MATADOR) et dévoile le premier single, Toni.
Un instrument en premier plan sur ce morceau, le piano. Des magnifiques arpèges démarrent la chanson rejoints rapidement par les riffs doux de Daniel Kessler, la batterie de Sam Fogarino et la voix mélancolique et tendre de Paul Banks. Le morceau va crescendo, les guitares raffinées s’accélèrent, les harmonies vocales s’intensifient et la rythmique devient implacable.
Toni est accompagnée par un clip très cinématographique réalisé par Van Alpert et conçu en 2 parties. Découvrez Paul Banks en acteur observateur d’une battle de danse épique. Pour concevoir ce 7eme opus prévu pour le 15 juillet 2022, INTERPOL a un peu changé ses méthodes de travail habituelles. L’écriture de The Other Side of Make-Believe a débuté à distance en 2020, avec des sessions d’écriture solitaires et dispersées géographiquement, puis quelques mois plus tard en 2021, le trio s’est réuni pour étoffer le nouveau matériel dans une maison des Catskills, avant de finaliser l’ensemble avec Flood (Mark Ellis) et Alan Moulder à Londres.
Écrire seuls dans ces premiers stades géographiquement dispersés a donné aux membres un moyen de sortir de leurs têtes respectives : « Nous avons vraiment extrait le miel de cette situation », explique Fogarino. Kessler fait écho à ce sentiment : « Travailler seul était rude au début, mais nous a ouvert un nouveau chapitre vivifiant »
« Nous écrivons habituellement ensemble live, mais pour la première fois, je ne crie pas au-dessous une batterie », dit Banks. « Daniel et moi avons une alchimie assez forte pour que je puisse imaginer comment ma voix compléterait les démos qu’il envoyait par e-mail. Ensuite, je pouvais baisser le son des gars sur mon ordinateur portable, localiser ces mélodies colorées et généralement faire passer le message d’une manière discrète »

Since the album Marauder released in 2018 and the EP A Fine Mess released in 2019, we have been scanning the social networks with great impatience to get news from INTERPOL.
Today, the New York band announces the release of a new album, The Other Side of Make-Believe (MATADOR) and unveils the first single, Toni.
An instrument prevails in this great song, the piano. Beautiful arpeggios start the song, quickly joined by the lovely smooth riffs of Daniel Kessler, the drums of Sam Fogarino and the melancholic and tender voice of Paul Banks. The song goes crescendo, the elegant guitars accelerate, the vocal harmonies intensify and the rhythmic becomes relentless.
Toni is accompanied by a very cinematic video directed by Van Alpert and conceived in 2 parts. Discover Paul Banks as an actor who watches an epic dance battle. A “West Side Story” in a very modern version.

To conceive this 7th opus scheduled for 15 July 2022, INTERPOL has changed its usual working methods. The Writing for The Other Side of Make-Believe began remotely in 2020, with lonely and geographically dispersed writing sessions, then a few months later in 2021, the trio reunited to flesh out the new material at a Catskills house, before finalizing the set with Flood (Mark Ellis) and Alan Moulder in North London.
Writing on their own in those geographically-dispersed early stages gave the members a way out of their respective heads: “We really extracted the honey out of this situation”, says Fogarino. Kessler echoes the sentiment: “Working alone was raw at first, but has opened up a vivid new chapter for us.”
“We usually write live, but for the first time I’m not shouting over a drumkit,” Banks says. “Daniel and I have a strong enough chemistry that I could picture how my voice would complement the scratch demos he emailed over. Then I could turn the guys down on my laptop, locate these colourful melodies and generally get the message across in an understated fashion.”
