Pour fêter la sortie de son nouvel album, Never let Me Go, PLACEBO avait décidé de donner 5 concerts intimistes dans 5 villes européennes : Paris, Londres, Amsterdam, Bruxelles et Berlin. On le sait bien, le groupe anglais entretient une relation privilégiée avec la France depuis ses débuts et donc, Paris a été choisi pour ouvrir le bal.
Nous voilà donc, le 23.03.2022, deux jours avant la sortie de ce 8eme album très attendu dans le joli cadre du Théâtre de Trianon, très impatients de découvrir avant tout le monde ces titres en live.
On avait été informé que la prise de photos ou de vidéos était strictement interdite. Et donc, à l’entrée nos smartphones ont été rangés dans des pochettes spéciales scellés par un verrou magnétique qui ressemble à un anti-vol de magasin. Cette pochette on la garde avec soi et au besoin on peut la déverrouiller à une borne située en dehors de la salle.
Cela permettra au public de profiter pleinement du spectacle avec ses yeux et non le regarder via un écran. C’était mon premier concert de ce type et je franchement j’adhère !
A 20 h, Brian Molko et Stefan Olsdal, accompagnés par leur fidèles musiciens Angela Chan (violon, keyboard, backing vocals), Nick Gavrilovic (keyboard, guitare), Matt Lunn (batterie) et William Lloyd (guitare, basse, batterie et synthé) montent sur scène devant un salle comble. Tonnerre de cris et d’applaudissements.
Tous de noir vêtu : Brian Molko avec son nouveau look – cheveux longs, moustache et mouche – porte des lunettes fumées, Stefan Olsdal avec sa silhouette fine et élancé et sa coiffure habituelle.
Comme l’album, le show démarre avec Forever Chemicals, morceau brut et rugueux. Les guitares sont saturées, les synthés puissants – le son est fort, même trop fort et couvre un peu la voix de Brian. Fait que sera corrigé dès le deuxième morceau, la sublime Beautiful James, premier single extrait de Never Let Me Go. Les fans connaissent déjà les paroles et accueillent cette chanson avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme.
Personnellement, j’attendais qu’ils jouent le nouvel album en intégralité, mais le morceau suivant est Scene of a Crime, extrait de Loud like Love (2013). La totalité de show suivra cet algorithme, 2 nouvelles chansons + 1 morceau ancien.
Ceux qui s’attendait à entendre les plus grands tubes comme The Bitter End, Pure Morning ou Special K seront forcément déçu, car ce soir on écouterait Blind ou Post Blue, des morceaux que j’adore et qu’on n’a pas eu l’occasion de les entendre souvent en concert.
PLACEBO marque les esprits ce soir à Paris !
Un show vibrant, captivant, sans aucun temps mort!
Molko et Olsdal avaient déclaré qu’après la tournée qui a célébré les 20 ans de leur album éponyme en 2016 qu’ils étaient épuisés de jouer toujours les mêmes hits au lieu de nouveaux morceaux, ce qui explique ce choix aussi.
La scène est assez sombre, baigné par de lumières bleus, rouge et verts et de temps en temps on est aveuglés par de spots leds très puissants. On ne verra pas bien leurs visages, ce côté mystérieux est surement une continuation de tous les visuels qui accompagne cet album : visages distordus, images pixélisées.
Happy Birthday in the Sky est tout simplement magistrale, la voix claire et plein d’émotion donne des frissons, les guitares sont rugissantes – ce refrain, ce hurlement obsessionnel “I want my medicine (give me my medicine) » résonne fortement dans nos oreilles.
Surrounded by Spies est angoissant et mystérieux. Protect Me From What I Want sera interprété en anglais et dans une version plus dynamique que d’habitude.
Latrès catchy, Try Better Next Time, remue la foule qui chante à l’unisson, décidément la pièce de résistance de ce soir ! L’ambiance dancefloor continue avec For What It’s Worth.
Pour Too many friends, Stefan s’installera au piano et le public chantera avec joie. Sad White Reggae avec ses sonorités d’électro pop 80’s est accompagné par un rythmique implacable et des guitares enragées.
Et comme sur l’album, Fix Yourself, c’est la conclusion parfaite du concert avant un rappel avec 2 morceaux : la mélancolique et très rythmé Post Blue et pour le final, on est ravie d’entendre les premières notes de Running Up That Hill la reprise électrique de Kate Bush.
Ils partiront sans dire un mot, juste des gestes des gestes de paix et de remerciements. Car dans un monde où il y a une surcharge continue d’information, d’images, des commentaires, des bruits de toute sortes, il parait que PLACEBO a aussi choisi la stratégie de communication « less is more » ! Ce soir tout a été mise au point pour vraiment nous faire plonger dans le concert sans nous distraire par d’autres choses ! Juste laisser la musique nous envahir ! Let The Music Play !
Un show frissonnant qui délivre live le message urgent et inquiétant de Never let me go. Pas moins de neuf titres du dernier album seront chanté sur les 17 morceaux qui ont composé la setlist !
Un show vibrant, captivant, sans aucun temps mort. Tout est là : les riffs puissants, les mélodies entêtants et la voix si sublime et si reconnaissable de Brian Molko. On a retrouvé cette ambiance rock si exceptionnelle de leurs shows : incendiaire et en même temps émotionnelle et dramatique. Les quelques 1000 spectateurs réunis ce soir au Trianon avait envie de retrouver cette ambiance !
Peu importe que Brian ou Stefan n’ont pas prononcé un seul mot entre les chansons. Ils sont venus – ils ont chanté (Parfaitement !) – ils sont partis ! PLACEBO marque les esprits ce soir à Paris !
Ah oui, un seul bémol – concert trop court- seulement 1h30 !!! On voulait plus ! Mais prenons-le comme un échauffement pour la tournée mondiale qui passera en novembre prochain par l’Hexagone. J’ai hâte !

To celebrate the release of their new album, Never let Me Go, PLACEBO decided to play 5 intimate concerts in 5 European cities: Paris, London, Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin. As we well know, the English band has a privileged relationship with France since its beginnings and therefore, Paris was chosen to open the shows!
So here we are, on 23.03.2022, two days before the release of this highly anticipated 8th album in the beautiful venue of the Théâtre de Trianon, very eager to discover these titles live before everyone else.
We were informed that taking photos or record videos was strictly prohibited. And so, at the entrance our smartphones have been stored in special pouches sealed by a magnetic lock that looks like a store anti-theft. This pouch is kept with you and if necessary, you can unlock it at a terminal located outside the concert room.
This will allow the audience to fully enjoy the show with their eyes and not watch it via a screen. It was my first concert of this type and I honestly, I totally agree!
At 8 p.m., Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal, accompanied by their faithful musicians Angela Chan (violin, keyboard, backing vocals), Nick Gavrilovic (keyboard, guitar), Matt Lunn (drums) and William Lloyd (guitar, bass, drums and synth) take the stage in front of a crowded venue. Huge screams and big applauses.
All dressed in black: Brian Molko with his new look – long hair, moustache and soul patch – wears smoked glasses, Stefan Olsdal with his slim and slender figure and usual hairstyle.
Like the album, the show starts with Forever Chemicals, a raw and energetic song. The guitars are saturated, the synths powerful – the sound is loud, even too loud and covers Brian’s voice. Fact that will be corrected from the second track, the sublime Beautiful James, first single from Never Let Me Go. Fans already know by heart the lyrics and welcome this song with great enthusiasm.
Personally, I expected to them to play the full new album but the next track is Scene of a Crime, from Loud like Love (2013). The entire show will follow this algorithm, 2 new songs + 1 old songs.
Those who expected to hear the greatest hits like The Bitter End, Pure Morning or Special K will necessarily be disappointed, because tonight we would listen to Blind or Post Blue, songs that I love and that we have not had the opportunity to hear them often in concert.
Molko and Olsdal had stated that after the tour that celebrated the 20th anniversary of their self-titled album in 2016, they were exhausted of always playing the same songs instead of new tracks, which explains this choice, too.
PLACEBO performs a vibrant, captivating show in Paris! Outstanding !
The stage is quite dark, bathed in blue, red and green lights and from time to time, we are blinded by very powerful LED spotlights. We will not see their faces well, this mysterious side is surely a continuation of all the visuals that accompany this album: distorted faces, pixelated images.
Happy Birthday in the Sky is simply masterful, the clear and emotional voice gives shivers on my spine, the guitars are roaring – that chorus, that obsessive howl “I want my medicine (give me my medicine)” resonates strongly in our ears.
Surrounded by Spies is angsty and mysterious. Protect Me From What I Want will be performed in English and in a more dynamic way than usual. The very catchy, Try Better Next Time, stirs the crowd that sings along, definitely, the favourite audience song tonight! The dancefloor atmosphere continues with For What It’s Worth.
For Too many friends, Stefan will play at the piano in the middle of the stage and the audience will sing with joy. Sad White Reggae with its 80’s electro pop sounds is accompanied by relentless rhythmic and crazy guitar riffs.
And as on the album, Fix Yourself, it is the perfect conclusion of the concert before an encore with 2 tracks: the melancholic and very rhythmic Post Blue and for the finale, we are delighted to hear the first notes of Running Up That Hill, the electric cover of Kate Bush.
They will leave without saying a word, just signs of peace and thanks. Because in a world where there is an overload of information, images, comments and noises of all kinds, it looks that Placebo has chosen the communication strategy “less is more”! Tonight, everything has been done to really make us immerse into the concert and not be distracted by any other things! Just let the music play!
A shivering show that delivers live the urgent and the worrying message of Never Let Me Go. No less than nine tracks from this new record will be sung on the total 17 tracks that made up the setlist!
A vibrant, captivating show ! It’s all there: the powerful riffs, the catchy melodies and Brian Molko’s sublime and recognizable voice.
We found again this exceptional rock atmosphere of their shows: incendiary and at the same time emotional and dramatic. The 1000 fans gathered tonight at the Trianon wanted to find this!
It doesn’t matter if Brian or Stefan didn’t say a single word between the songs. They came – they played (Perfectly!) – they left! PLACEBO performs an outstanding show in Paris!
Ah yes, one remark – concert too short – only 1h30!!! Definitely, we wanted more. But let’s take it as a warm-up for the world tour that will pass next November through France and all Europe. I can’t wait! Tour dates are here!
