Le groupe suédois SOEN et le trio français LIZZARD se trouvaient sur ma liste de « To Do Concerts » depuis un bon moment. Les 2 formations ont sorti des magnifiques albums début 2021, mais à cause de la pandémie, leurs concerts ont été reportés plusieurs fois. Les voilà réunis sur la même affiche, le 24 Septembre à la Maroquinerie, Paris, pour une soirée à guichets fermés, sous le signe du Rock & Metal Progressif.
Peu après 19h, un troisième groupe débute les hostilités, OCEANHOARSE, un groupe de heavy métal fondé en janvier 2018 à Helsinki, par le guitariste Ben Varon (ex – Amoral). Le groupe finlandais est là ce soir pour défendre leur premier album Dead Reckoning sorti en août 2021.
Une performance très énergique et bruyante. Le chanteur, Joonas Kosonen, très sympathique et communicatif avec le public, crie fortement dans son micro les poings serrés, gesticule beaucoup et disparait plusieurs fois dans un écran de fumée.
Le bassiste Jyri Helko, le guitariste Ben Varon, et le batteur Oskari Niemi sont très bon et expansifs dans leurs jeux. Leur style, un métal moderne qui mélange des passages tout en puissance avec de solos mélodiques, plaise à l’audience qui est déjà assez nombreuse. Le quatuor finlandais quittera la scène sous des applaudissements enthousiastes bien mérités. Un bon début de soirée !
Dix minutes de pause et les trois musiciens de LIZZARD : Katy Elwell (batterie), Mathieu Ricou (chant/guitare), William Knox (chant/basse) s’installe sur scène.
Le groupe originaire de Limoges nous invite d’entreprendre un voyage magnifique à travers un set composé de 8 chansons parfaitement construites avec des structures rhythmiques complexe, des riffs efficaces et des mélodies accrocheuses.
Ils interpréteront donc 3 morceaux de l’album ERODED sorti en février 2021 : The Decline, Blowdown et Haywire. Le reste du set sera composé de morceaux de leur deux premiers albums, mention spéciale pour le titre instrumental Shift, extrait de l’album du même nom et The Orbiter, extrait de leurpremier album, Out of Reach.
On retrouve un large spectre des sonorités : des ambiances sombres alterne avec ceux plus lumineuses, des riffs bruts et rugueux, des éléments progressifs et raffinés, des mélodies complexes plus aériennes et mélancoliques.
Les musiciens resteront assez statiques sur scène, chacun à son poste. Placée au milieu de la scène, tous les yeux son rivées sur Kathy, qui très énergique à la batterie, exécute avec précision et dextérité son ballet de bras incessantes.
Will, à la basse, reste très concentré pendant toute la durée du concert et complète merveilleusement la rythmique implacable. Le chanteur – guitariste Mathieu est excellent et ne manque pas l’occasion de communiquer avec le public. La performance vocale est impeccable.
L’éclairage plutôt sombre crée une ambiance cinématographique planante et intense qui vas très bien avec la musique. L’acoustique est excellente. Leur show intense et varié conquiert la salle, bien rempli, qui les applaudit fortement. Quelle belle performance ! Bravo ! Hâte de le revoir une prochaine fois !
Je profite de la pause pour passer saluer Jennifer Gervais, la talentueuse et adorable chanteuse du groupe français DUST IN MIND qui s’occupe de stand de merchanding de SOEN et customise en live avec de ciseaux et beaucoup de talent les T shirt à l’effigie du groupe !
SOEN nous offre ce soir, un concert superbe, en parfaite communion avec les fans dévoués qui se sont montrés infatigables tout au long du concert…avec des refrains grandioses et entêtantes, le groupe suedois, nous plonge dans un univers poétique et provocatif à travers une set liste puissante!
Peu après 21 h, la scène est plongée dans le noir et les sirènes d’alarme de Monarch retentissent, SOEN entre donc en scène avec le titre le plus fort et heavy de leur dernier album, Imperial, sorti en Janvier 2021. Un parfait début de concert avec ce morceau, pur condensé de riffs agressifs, sa rythmique féroce et les changements de mélodies élégantes.
Après cette introduction toute en force, Joel Ekelöf (chant), Martin Lopez (batterie), Lars Enok Åhlund (claviers et guitare), Oleksii « Zlatoyar » Kobel (basse) et Cody Ford (guitare solo) gardent la même énergie avec Deceiver, tout aussi puissant, suivi par un moment plus calme et plein d’émotion avec le superbe Lunacy.
Enorme ambiance, le public se montre particulièrement enthousiaste dès le premier morceau. La salle est archi pleine. Les musiciens eux-mêmes semblent satisfaits d’assister à cette ferveur.
Le groupe mettra en avant ce soir les deux derniers albums, Lotus et Imperial et enchaîne les titres : des morceaux pure énergie Martyrs, Lumerian, Covenant ou des ballades : Modesty, Lucidity ou Illusion, un parfait équilibre entre les chansons heavy avec de riffs lourds et sombres et les morceaux mélodiques et douces, avec des guitares aériennes et des lignes vocales d’une beauté inouïe.
La percutante Savia nous offrira de sonorités exotiques, tandis qu’Antagonist sera l’un des moments forts de la soirée. Sur cette chanson très engagée, Joel Ekelöf demandera au public de l’accompagner sur le refrain révolté : Fire up your guns !”. L’audience très réceptive chantera avec conviction.
Chacun de musiciens du groupe mérite une mentionne spéciale :
Le charismatique frontman, Joel Ekelöf, ported’abord un blouson Perfecto en cuir, lunettes et casquette noirs et se changera plus tard dans une veste de costume noire, occupe bien la scène. Il se déplace de gauche à droite, sourit et interagit souvent avec le public, tout en restant assez réservé.
Sa voix est superbe, mélancolique. Puissante ou douce et feutré est rempli d’émotion. Son chant d’une beauté enivrante et tout aussi parfait que sur les albums studio.
Le guitariste canadien, Cody Lee Ford délivre un magnifique jeu de guitare, que ça soit de gros riffs heavy ou de de magnifiques solos mélodieux. Il sera d’ailleurs souvent mis en avance dans le concert.
Le génial batteur Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) est plus en retrait sur scène mais on sent bien que c’est lui le chef d’orchestre, la tête pensante du groupe. Son jeu est parfait et complexe, chaque morceau bénéficie de la maitrise de ses frappes fortes et extrêmement précises.
Le bassiste ukrainien, Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel, tient son rôle à la perfection. Les ligne de basse sont élaborés et bien intégrés dans la rythmique des chansons. Il montra le soutien à son pays en fin de show, quand il arborera avec fierté le drapeau ukrainien.
Le multi-instrumentiste Lars Enok Åhlund est impressionnant. Pas seulement par sa moustache, sa chevelure blonde et son look de viking mais aussi par sa présence scénique et son extraordinaire habilité à manier et à changer les instruments. Il passe du clavier aux guitares, du micro à des percussions.
Les musiciens arpentent la scène de long en large, chacun se produit au milieu de la scène et communique avec le public par de gestes et de larges sourires.
Après des énormes et chaleureuses ovations du public, le groupe revient sur scène pour un rappel constitué de trois morceaux : Lascivious, Jinn et le sublime Lotus couronné d’un magnifique solo final.
SOEN nous offre ce soir, un concert superbe, en parfaite communion avec les fans dévoués qui se sont montrés infatigables tout au long du concert. Des cornes, des bras en l’air, des chants en cœur et des énormes ovations, une soirée inoubliable pour les fans mais aussi pour le groupe qui ne s’attendait peut-être pas à un tel accueil magistral !
Le groupe n’a pas manqué d’exprimer sa gratitude pour leur support et l’amour tout au longue du concert.
Si leur cinquième album, Imperial, est un chef-d’œuvre, son rendu live sur scène et tout aussi merveilleux. Avec des refrains grandioses et entêtantes, SOEN, nous plonge dans un univers poétique et provocatif à travers une set liste puissante. Une expérience captivante un show brillant du bout en bout. La Classe ! SOEN rime avec Poème !
Entre l’énergie d’OCEANHOARSE, les mélodies complexes et aériennes de LIZZARD et la parfaite maitrise musicale et à la poésie de SOEN, nous avons passé une excellente soirée.
La Maroquinerie, j’avoue, ce n’est vraiment pas ma salle préfère ! Il fait chaud, c’est difficile de se déplacer et pour prendre des photos, surtout en cas de forte affluence comme ce soir, c’est vraiment galère. Il est impossible de se faufiler dans la fosse et encore pire au petit balcon où la visibilité est très réduite s’il y a 2-3 rangées des gens devant. Pour shooter SOEN, je me suis plutôt bien débrouillé grâce à un couple très gentil qui m’ont laissé leur place en espace de 3 chansons et je tiens à leur remercier et je les salue chaleureusement si jamais ils lisent cet article.
Une dernière chose : SOEN sortira son nouvel album live, le 18 novembre 2022 via Silver Lining Music. Un film concert très spécial, ATLANTIS, comprenant treize des compositions les plus populaires du groupe réinterprété avec un accompagnement orchestral en direct.
Filmé et enregistré le 10 décembre 2021, les musiciens de SOEN ont travaillé ensemble avec un orchestre de 8 musiciens pour réinterpréter et redécouvrir une énergie et des éléments nouveaux dans les chansons classiques de Soen, tels que “Antagonist”, “Monarch”, “Jinn” et “Lucidity”, ainsi qu’une interprétation étonnante de “Snuff”, méditation profondément sombre de Slipknot sur le rejet de l’amour par les ténèbres.
En attendant de les revoir sur scène, je vous conseille vivement cet album !

SOEN – Magical Show at La Maroquinerie, Paris – guests LIZZARD and OCEANHOARSE
The Swedish band SOEN and the French trio LIZZARD have been on my list of “To Do Concerts” for quite some time. The 2 bands released beautiful albums in early 2021, but because of the pandemic, their concerts were postponed several times. Here they are gathered on the same stage on September 24 at the Maroquinerie, Paris, for a sold-out evening, under the sign of Rock & Progressive Metal.
Shortly after 7pm, a third band starts hostilities, OCEANHOARSE, a heavy metal band founded in 2018 in Helsinki, by the guitarist Ben Varon (ex – Amoral). The Finnish band is here tonight to defend their debut album Dead Reckoning, released in August 2021.
A very energetic and noisy performance. The singer, Joonas Kosonen, very friendly and communicative with the public, shouts loudly into his microphone with clenched fists, gesticulates a lot and disappears several times in a smokescreen.
Bassist Jyri Helko, guitarist Ben Varon, and drummer Oskari Niemi are very good and expansive in their playing. Their style, a modern metal that mixes powerful passages with melodic solos, appeals to the audience which is already quite large. The Finnish quartet will leave the stage to well-deserved enthusiastic applause. A great start to the evening!
Ten minutes break and the three musicians of LIZZARD: Katy Elwell (drums), Mathieu Ricou (vocals / guitar), William Knox (vocals / bass) arrive on stage. The band from Limoges invites us to embark on a magnificent journey through a set composed of 8 perfectly constructed songs with complex rhythmic structures, effective riffs and catchy melodies.
They will perform 3 songs from the album ERODED released in February 2021: The Decline, Blowdown and Haywire. The rest of the set will consist of tracks from their first two albums, special mention for the instrumental track Shift, from the album of the same name and The Orbiter, from their first album, Out of Reach.
There is a wide spectrum of sounds: dark atmospheres alternate with brighter ones, raw and rough riffs, progressive and refined elements, complex melodies more aerial and melancholic.
The musicians will remain quite static on stage, each at his position. Placed in the middle of the stage, all eyes are riveted on Kathy, who is very energetic on drums, performs with precision and dexterity her ballet of incessant arms.
Will, on bass, remains very focused throughout the concert and wonderfully completes the relentless rhythm. The singer-guitarist Mathieu is excellent and does not miss the opportunity to communicate with the audience. The vocal performance is impeccable.
The rather dark lighting creates a soaring and intense cinematic atmosphere that goes very well with the music. The acoustics are excellent. Their intense and varied show conquers the room, packed alreday, which applauds them strongly. What a great performance! Well done! Can’t wait to see him again next time!

Shortly after 9 p.m., the stage is plunged into darkness and Monarch‘s alarm sirens sound, so SOEN kick off the stage with the strongest and heaviest track of their latest album, Imperial, released in January 2021.
A perfect concert’s start with this song, pure condensation of aggressive riffs, fierce rhythm and elegant melodies. After this powerful introduction, Joel Ekelöf (vocals), Martin Lopez (drums), Lars Enok Åhlund (keyboards and guitar), Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (bass) and Cody Ford (lead guitar) keep the same energy with Deceiver, just as powerful, followed by a quieter and emotional moment with the superb Lunacy.
Huge atmosphere, the audience is particularly enthusiastic from the first song. The room is fully packed. Tonight, SOEN offer us a superb concert, in perfect communion with the dedicated fans who were tireless throughout the concert…grandiose and heady choruses, the Swedis band, plunges us into a poetic and provocative universe through a powerful set list. The band will highlight tonight the last two albums, Lotus and Imperial and chain the titles: pure energy songs Martyrs, Lumerian, Covenant or ballads: Modesty, Lucidity or Illusion, a perfect balance between heavy songs with heavy and dark riffs and melodic and soft songs, with aerial guitars and vocal lines of incredible beauty.
The hard-hitting Savia will offer us some exotic sounds, while Antagonist will be one of the highlights of the evening. On this very committed song, Joel Ekelöf will ask the audience to accompany him on the strong, rebellious chorus: Fire up your guns! The very receptive audience will singalong with conviction.
Each of the musicians in the band deserves a special mention:
The charismatic frontman, Joel Ekelöf, first wearing first a leather Perfecto jacket, sun glasses and black cap and will later change into a black suit jacket, occupies the stage well. He moves from left to right, smiles and often interacts with the audience, while remaining quite reserved. His voice is superb, melancholic. Powerful or soft and hushed is filled with emotion. His beautiful singing is just as perfect as on the studio albums.
The Canadian guitarist Cody Lee Ford delivers beautiful guitar playing, whether it’s big heavy riffs or beautiful melodic solos. He will often be put ahead in the concert.
The brilliant drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) is more withdrawn on stage but we feel that he is the conductor, the mastermind of the group. His playing is perfect and complex, each track benefits of the mastery of his strong and extremely precise strikes.
Ukrainian bassist Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel plays his role perfectly. The bass lines are elaborate and well-integrated into the rhythm of the songs. He showed support for his country at the end of the show, when he proudly flew the Ukrainian flag.
The Multi-instrumentalist Lars Enok Åhlund is impressive. Not only by his mustache, blonde hair and Viking look but also by his stage presence and his extraordinary ability to handle and change instruments. He switches from keyboard to guitars, from microphone to percussion.
The musicians walk up and down the stage, each performs in the middle of the stage and communicates with the audience with gestures and wide smiles.
After huge and warm ovations from the audience, the band returns to the stage for an encore consisting of three songs: Lascivious, Jinn and the sublime Lotus crowned with a magnificent final solo.
Tonight, SOEN offer us a superb concert, in perfect communion with the dedicated and tireless fans. Horns, arms and fists in the air, singalongs and huge ovations, an unforgettable evening for the fans but also for the band who perhaps did not expect such a masterful welcome! The band did not fail to express their gratitude for their support and love throughout the concert.
If their fifth album, Imperial, is a masterpiece, its live rendering on stage is fantastic. With grandiose and catchy choruses, SOEN, plunges us into a poetic and provocative universe through a powerful set list. A captivating experience a brilliant show from start to finish. Classy ! Between the energy of OCEANHOARSE, the complex and airy melodies of LIZZARD and the perfect musical mastery and poetry of SOEN, we enjoy a magical evening.
Even if, La Maroquinerie, I admit, it’s really not my favourite venue! It’s hot, it’s difficult to move around and to take pictures, especially in case of heavy crowds like tonight, it’s really difficult.
It is impossible to sneak into the pit and even worse to the small balcony where visibility is very reduced if there are 2-3 rows of people in front. To shoot SOEN, I did pretty well thanks to a very nice couple who left me their place in space of 3 songs and I want to thank them and I greet them warmly if they ever read this article.
One last thing: SOEN will release their new live album on November 18, 2022 via Silver Lining Music. A very special concert film, ATLANTIS, featuring thirteen of the band’s most popular compositions reinterpreted with live orchestral accompaniment.
Filmed and recorded on December 10, 2021, SOEN musicians worked together with an 8-piece orchestra to reinterpret and rediscover new energy and elements in Soen’s classic songs, such as “Antagonist”, “Monarch”, “Jinn” and “Lucidity”, as well as an amazing rendition of “Snuff”, Slipknot’s deeply dark meditation on the rejection of love by darkness.
While waiting to see them again on stage, I highly recommend this album!
