Du rock, du métal, de la pop 80’s, un festival métal à Paris en décembre – voilà les news et la play list de juillet 2020.

JJ WILDE – The Rush

JJ Wilde est une voix rock d’exception venue de Canada. Elle vient de sortir « Ruthless » (sur Black Box/BMG), un premier album qui ne manque pas des superlatives. Au Canada, en quelques mois, la chanteuse est passée du stade de simple outsider à celui de tête d’affiche des charts, rivalisant avec The Struts, Incubus, The Blue Stones ou The Glorious Sons. Avec son single « The Rush » JJ Wilde est même entrée dans l’histoire en étant la première artiste féminine à atteindre simultanément le sommet des trois principaux classements radio du pays, et à réussir à se maintenir à cette première place pendant trois semaines de suite !

« Cet album est le résumé d’un long parcours », confie JJ, « ma principale inspiration est venue d’un appartement dans lequel j’ai vécu pendant deux ans. C’était une période sombre, et je ne savais pas du tout où allait ma vie. Près de 4 ans plus tard, après d’innombrables concerts, tournées, voyages et séances d’écriture ou d’enregistrement, j’ai maintenant l’impression que ces chansons reflètent une vision intérieure sur mon univers. Ce disque résume mon parcours, le début et la fin de mes relations amoureuses, mes amitiés, mon travail… une sorte de course folle que je suis heureuse de pouvoir enfin partager ».

Ruthless est un album très varié porté par le single The Rush – puissant et catchy, la profonde et émouvante ballade, Funeral For A Lover, le rock n’roll de Breakfast In Bed ou le groove communicatif du génial Cold Shoulder.

BLOODHYPE- Delicate Creature

Après le chatoyant Violent Heart inspiré des années 80, le groupe berlinois, BLOODHYPE, sort Delicate Creature, un single d’été de crise, même esprit 80’s, imprégné d’une heureuse mélancolie et nostalgie. Le riff de guitare, tranchant et rafraîchissant comme un poignard à glace, coupe la basse post-punk-esque et prépare le terrain pour les arpèges de synthétiseur qui rempliront les refrains.

La voix d’Elmar Weyland flotte au-dessus de la scène à néons, coupée par l’angoisse alors qu’il chante un monde de relations toxiques, de hauts et de bas – un triangle impossible auquel il ne peut échapper.

Privé de scène à cause du COVID 19, le quatuor d’indie-rock berlinois s’est enfermé dans le studio mythique Hansa (David Bowie, U2, Iggy Pop, Depeche Mode…) pour y enregistrer ce nouveau single. Le clip – par son traitement d’image rétro – témoigne ainsi de cette inspiration nouvelle, puisée dans le passé, dans ce studio imprégné par la créativité des artistes légendaires qui s’y sont succédés.

DUST LOVERS – Goldie

Formé à Paris par une majorité de Nantais sous le nom The Texas Chainsaw Dust Lovers en 2012, raccourci en “Dust Lovers” en 2018, le quintet déploie un groove moite et chaleureux, un rock velu et rythmé, puisant à la fois dans la lascivité du blues et l’urgence du punk. Avec des tournées France/Europe, un Hellfest en 2018 sous une Valley bondée ou encore des premières parties d’artistes comme King Dude, Brant Bjork, Black Rainbows ou encore The Picture Books, Dust Lovers se fait rapidement un nom dans la scène Fuzz en France. Une ambiance cinématographique plane sur leur discographie.

On vogue ainsi de Tarantino à Sergio Leone, en passant par Dario Argento et John Carpenter, leurs morceaux évoquant des B.O. de films perdus de ces derniers. Une atmosphère qui a, notamment, permis au groupe de participer aux bandes-son des séries Marianne (Netflix) et T.A.N.K. (Canal+). Après un remaniement de line-up, Dust Lovers complète le virage musical déjà amorcé sur son précédent album (Film Noir en 2017) avec un nouvel opus : Fangs.

Seether – Dangerous

Trois ans après Poison The Parish, le groupe originaire d’Afrique du Sud, mais désormais basé en Californie, sort enfin un nouvel album studio. “Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum” (traduction : “If You Want Peace, Prepare for War”) le 28/08/2020

Cet album est sans doute le disque le plus engagé émotionnellement et politiquement que Shaun Morgan (chant / guitare) ait réalisé à ce jour.

Produit par Shaun lui-même et mixé par Matt Hyde (Deftones, Parkway Drive, Slayer…), l’album marque aussi l’arrivée de Cory Lowery (ex-Saint Asonia et Stuck Mojo) au poste de guitariste. Il rejoint ainsi le bassiste Dale Stewart et le batteur John Humphrey.

DESPITE THE END – Paralyzed

DESPITE THE END est un groupe de métal français fondé en 2019 à l’initiative de son vocaliste Vartan Yorganciyan. Leur premier EP intitulé « Butterfly Effect » est maintenant disponible.

L’EP consiste en 5 titres puissants et énergiques qui dévoilent aussi de mélodies catchy mais aussi une courte intro (Despite the Beginning) et une courte une outro (Despite the End).

Porte par les titres Paralysed et le Butterfly Effect, l’EP en ensemble est d’une grande qualité etnous rappellent de grosses pointures comme System Of A Down ou Slipknot.

Des gros riffs métal, une excellente section rythmique et une voix bien affirmée, des alternances entre le métal brut intense et des ambiances plus calmes, émotionnelle et groove, voilà un jeune groupe de métal français qui promet et qu’on a hâte de découvrir sur scène.

Un live est prévu le 10 octobre 2020 au Gibus pour la release party de l’album

Toybloïd – Beauty & The Beast

Modern Love le deuxième album du trio garage rock est enfin sorti et honnêtement ça déchire !  13 titres courtes, directe et hyper énergique : Lou, Madeleine et Greg nous mettent plein les oreilles avec un son brut et efficace. Guitares endiablées, voix rageantes, rythmes frénétiques et des message engagés, le rock féminin français est au top.

Dans la Bio de l’album on peut lire « Ce n’est pas un album, c’est une morsure. Ça tord, ça tape, ça tache, ça fait mal, ça fait sale et ça cravache » « Ça parle d’amour et de sueur, de drag Queen et de cyprine »

Ego Kill Talent – The Call

Ce nom vous dit déjà peut-être quelque chose…En effet, en 2017 & 2018, vous avez peut être découvert ce groupe originaire de Sao Paulo, sur l’une des scènes du festival Download Paris (c’est mon cas) !

Ou alors, peut-être avez-vous apprécié leurs riffs en 1ère partie de System of a Down aux Arènes de Nîmes. La même année, toujours en 2018, ils jouaient aussi en ouverture de Within Temptation au Zénith de la Porte de la Villette.

Bref, la France est loin d’être une terre inconnue pour ces brésiliens qui n’ont pas de leçon à recevoir de la part des anglo-saxons lorsqu’il s’agit de faire vrombir des compos “heavy” qui ne cachent pas leurs ambitions pop.  Doté d’un chanteur imparable et d’une fluidité instrumentale qui a fait ses preuves, Ego Kill Talent a sorti un premier album en 2017.

En février dernier le groupe avait mis en ligne le clip de Now, suivit, au mois d’avril, d’une vidéo illustrant la chanson Lifeporn et fin juin The Call qui vient compléter “The Dance”, un EP qui annonce un nouvel album prévu pour début 2021. Mais d’ici là Ego Kill Talent vous réserve quelques petites surprises…

Formé en 2014 par le chanteur Jonathan Correa et le guitariste Theo van der Loo, Ego Kill Talent compte aussi dans ses rangs le batteur Jean Dolabella, qui a officié pendant 5 ans chez Sepultura et bossé avec Mike Patton ou le producteur Matt Wallace.

The Killers – My Own Soul’s Warning

My Own Soul’s Warning ouvrira le prochain album des The Killers, Imploding the Mirage.

Une excellente rythmique conduit la chanson à qui se rajoutent des majestueuses synthés entêtants tout droit sortis des 80’s et bien sûr la voix imparable de Brandon Flowers.

Après Caution, Fire in Bone et Blowback, My Own Soul’s Warning est un hymne conçu pour les stades. Nous voilà encore plus impatients d’écouter la totalité de l’album.

Imploding the Mirage devait initialement sortir le 29 mai, mais un mois avant sa sortie, le groupe a retardé la sortie et pour l’instant pas de nouvelles sur une date officielle de sortie.

Notons que c’est premier album sans le guitariste original Dave Keuning et qu’il compte pas mal d’invitées comme Lindsey Buckingham, K.D. Lang, Weyes Blood, Blake Mills et plein d’autres.

Le concert prévu à Paris est aussi reporté pour juillet 2021… bref encore un peu de patiente…

Bring Me The Horizon – Parasite Eve

Deux fois nommés aux Grammy Awards, Bring Me The Horizon ont fait de leur quarantaine un moment réflexion, de création et d’enregistrement.

Ils ont trouvé un moyen de continuer à écrire de façon à ce qu’on ait l’impression que le frontman Oli Sykes et son collègue Jordan Fish étaient dans la même pièce. Grâce à une série d’appels vidéo, ils se sont inspirés de cette situation pour enregistrer un nouveau single, Parasite Eve.

Oli raconte : “Parasite Eve” est née de l’idée d’écrire une chanson de survie, mais comme la pandémie a commencé à se développer, les ressemblances étaient telles que nous avons décidé de la mettre de côté. Au fil du temps, nous avons commencé à sentir qu’elle était pertinente et qu’au lieu d’avoir peur d’elle, nous devrions nous attaquer au côté obscur et l’embrasser… “Parasite Eve” est notre message d’espoir, enveloppé de tristesse et de colère”.

Le groupe a filmé ses nouvelles méthodes d’écriture et d’enregistrement sous forme d’une série de mini-vidéos, qui seront prochainement disponibles sur YouTube.

Parasite Eve est le premier titre d’un EP qui sortira à la rentrée. Un projet produit par Oli et Jordan avec l’aide du compositeur Mick Gordon (Doom and Doom Eternal).

Le single a bénéficié d’un lancement canon le 26/06/2020 dans 42 playlists New Music Friday (#17 en France)

JJ WILDE – The Rush

JJ Wilde is an exceptional rock voice coming from Canada. She has just released Ruthless (on Black Box/BMG), a debut album full of superlatives. In Canada, in a few months, the singer went from being an outsider to a headliner, competing with The Struts, Incubus, The Blue Stones or The Glorious Sons. With her single The Rush. BLOODHYPE- Delicate Creature

After the shimmering Violent Heart inspired by the 80s, the Berliner band, BLOODHYPE, releases Delicate Creature, a crisis summer single, same 80’s spirit, imbued with a happy melancholy and nostalgia. The guitar riff, sharp and refreshing like an ice dagger, cuts by the post-punk-esque bass and sets the stage for the synthesizer arpeggios that will fill the choruses. Elmar Weyland’s voice floats above the neon stage, cut off by anguish as he sings a world of toxic relationships, ups and downs – an impossible triangle from which he cannot escape.

The indie-rock quartet locked themselves in the legendary studio Hansa (David Bowie, U2, Iggy Pop, Depeche Mode…) to record this new single. The video clip – by its retro image processing – thus testifies to this new inspiration, drawn from the past, in this studio imbued with the creativity of the legendary artists who have succeeded.

DUST LOVERS – Goldie

An atmosphere that allowed the band to participate in the soundtracks of the series Marianne (Netflix) and T.A.N.K. (Canal). Seether – Dangerous

DESPITE THE END – Paralyzed

DESPITE THE END is a French metal band founded in 2019 on the initiative of the singer Vartan Yorganciyan. Their first EP entitled Butterfly Effect is now available. The EP consists of 5 powerful and energetic tracks that also reveal catchy melodies and also a short intro (Despite the Beginning) and a short outro (Despite the End).  Carried by the tracks like Paralysed and the Butterfly Effect, the EP as a whole has a high sound quality and remind us of big bands like System Of A Down or Slipknot.

Huge metal riffs, an excellent rhythm section and a strong voice, alternations between intense raw metal and emotional and groove atmospheres, here is a young French metal band that promises.

We can’t wait to discover on stage.

A live performance is scheduled for October 10, 2020 at Gibus for the release party of the EP.

Toybloïd – Beauty & The Beast

Modern Love the second album of the garage rock trio is finally out and honestly, it’s killing it! 

13 short, direct and hyper-energetic songs: Lou, Madeleine and Greg enjoy our ears with a raw and effective sound. Devilish guitars, furious vocals, frenetic rhythms and committed messages, the French female rock is at the top.  In the album presentation we can read “It’s not an album, it’s a bite. It’s wrong, it’s tapping, it’s staining, it’s bad, it’s dirty and it’s about love and sweat, drag Queen and love juice”

You will soon discover more about Toybloïd, because I had the great pleasure of chatting with Lou Sirkis, the singer and guitarist of the band.

Ego Kill Talent – The Call

This name may already tell you something… Indeed, in 2017 – 2018, you may have discovered this band from Sao Paulo, on one of the stages of the Festival Download Paris (that’s my case)! Or maybe you enjoyed their riffs in the first part of System of a Down at the Arenas de Nîmes. The same year, again in 2018, they also played in the opening of Within Temptation at the Zenith of the Porte de la Villette.

So, France is far from being an unknown land for these Brazilians who have no lesson to learn from the Anglo-Saxons when it comes to making rumbles “heavy” compositions that do not hide their pop ambitions. With an unstoppable singer and proven instrumental fluidity, Ego Kill Talent released its debut album in 2017. Last February, the band released the music video for Now, followed in April by a video illustrating the song Lifeporn and finally, end of June The Call, which completes “The Dance“, an EP that announces a new album scheduled for early 2021. But until then Ego Kill Talent has a few surprises in store for us…

The Killers – My Own Soul’s Warning

My Own Soul’s Warning will open The Killers’ next album, Imploding the Mirage. An excellent rhythm leads the song to which are added majestic heady synths straight out of the 80’s and of course the fabulous voice of Brandon Flowers.  After Caution, Fire in Bone and Blowback, My Own Soul’s Warning is an anthem written for stadiums. Now, we are even more impatient to listen to the entire album.

Imploding the Mirage was originally scheduled for release on May 29, but a month before its release, the band delayed release and so far, no news on an official release date. Note that this is the first album without the original guitarist Dave Keuning and it shows an impressive number of guests like Lindsey Buckingham, K.D. Lang, Weyes Blood, Blake Mills and many others.  The shw in Paris is also rescheduled for July 2021 … so just a little bit of patience

Bring Me The Horizon – Parasite Eve

Twice nominated for Grammy Awards, Bring Me The Horizon have made their quarantine time a moment of reflection, creation and recording. They found a way to keep writing so that it felt like frontman Oli Sykes and his colleague Jordan Fish were in the same room. Through a series of video calls, they took inspiration from this situation to record a new single, Parasite Eve.

Oli says: “Parasite Eve” was born from the idea of writing a survival song, but as the pandemic began to develop, the similarities were such that we decided to put it aside. Over time, we began to feel that it was relevant and that instead of being afraid of it, we should tackle the dark side and embrace it … “Parasite Eve” is our message of hope, shrouded in sadness and anger.”

The band has filmed their new writing and recording methods in the form of a series of mini-videos, which will soon be available on YouTube.

Parasite Eve is the first title of an EP to be released in this fall. A project produced by Oli and Jordan with the help of composer Mick Gordon (Doom and Doom Eternal). The single enjoyed a hot release on 26/06/2020 in 42 new Music Friday playlists (#17 in France) #1 and cover of 6 international playlists, #1 “Rock This” on Spotify (4.5 M subscribers). More than 800k views on the clip in 10 hours!

Storm the Arena – 1^st Indoor Metal Festival in Paris

On December 11 and 12, 2020, Accor Arena transforms into the new metal temple in the heart of Paris. In collaboration with Live Nation, Accor Arena is launching Storm the Arena, its first indoor metal festival and its first owner event! 

15 French and European metal bands (Mass Hysteria, Eluveitie, Cult Of Luna, Rise Of The Northstar, Frank Carter And The Rattlesnakes, While She Sleeps, Chunk!
