Le groupe de rock français, AGUELENNA a sorti son premier album éponyme, le 2 février 2024, via M&O Music. 

Du rock énergique, des belles mélodies, un chant charismatique en français, des textes engagés et une rythmique entrainante, le trio surfe sur la vague du gros rock américain, tout en créant son propre style à la française, accrocheur et efficace.

J’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer MARIE BEAUREPAIRE (chant) et RIKO LACAN (guitare) qui nous ont parlé du groupe, de la création du nouvel album, de leurs inspirations et de plein d’autre choses.

Salut Marie et Riko, pour commencer pourriez-vous nous faire une présentation du groupe AGUELENNA ?

Marie : Le projet a commencé en 2007 avec Riko qui est guitariste et moi, au chant. On a commencé au tout début avec des petits concerts des reprises. Les compositions sont venues ensuite.

On a changé la line-up plusieurs fois. On a rencontré Marc (LIMBALLE) qui est notre batteur actuellement, en 2015 et après, on a commencé à travailler sérieusement sur quelle voie on allait se tourner :  Pop ou Rock.  Finalement on a opté pour le rock.

Riko : Ce qu’on faisait avant, c’était beaucoup plus pop, un peu moins peps et quand Marc est arrivé dans le projet, il a soumis l’idée de prendre un virage un peu plus énergique. On en a beaucoup discuté. On avait fait quelques EP et ensuite en 2017, on a sorti un EP de 4 titres, Jour de Foire, dans lequel on sent vraiment ce virage beaucoup plus énergique, un peu plus pop punk, rock et on a donc continué dans cette trajectoire.

J’imagine que vous n’aviez pas tous les mêmes influences ?

Riko : Non, pas du tout c’est assez large. Moi je suis le plus métal de tous, aussi gros rock américain. Marie aussi aime le rock américain.

D’où vient le nom AGUELENNA ? 

Riko : C’est de l’espagnol. En fait, dans le mot original, il y a pas de lettre « U » et ni de double N, mais Il y a la lettre « la égné» (eñe en espagnol). Ageleña est une petite araignée qui a la particularité de vivre en communauté, comme les fourmis.

Elles se répartissent les tâches : il y on a qui vont tisser la toile, les autres qui élèvent les petits, etc. c’est un fait est très rare pour une araignée puisque, en général, elles vivent seules. J’ai trouvé ça par hasard et j’ai pensé que c’était marrant.

Votre nouvel album est sorti le 2 février via M&O Music. Quand et comment vous l’avez écrit ?

Riko : Dès la sortie de l’EP en 2017, on a attaqué le travail sur cet album. On a passé un an et demi à le faire et on a commencé les prises en février 2020. Et comme on le sait tous, en mars 2020 tout s’est arrêté.

Quand tu es musicien et tu es dans une dynamique d’enregistrement, tu es vraiment focus, bien concentré sur le travail et le Covid nous a un peu éparpillés, on ne pouvait plus se voir.

C’était hyper dur parce qu’il a fallu reprendre cette dynamique d’enregistrement après en 2021. On a mis le temps de le finaliser, le mixer, le faire masteriser. Ça nous a paru assez long.

C’est très démocratique la façon dont on travaille. On discute beaucoup et il faut qu’on soit tous d’accord sur ce qu’on va faire”

Comment vous travaillez ensemble ? Qui fait la musique ? Qui fait les textes ?

Marie : On travaille beaucoup ensemble. On échange beaucoup, on se met d’accord sur beaucoup de choses. C’est Riko qui écrit. De mon côté, je trouve les mélodies. J’ai des thèmes qui me tiennent à cœur et en fait, comme je lui « impose » certains sujets, on se met d’accord tous les 3 sur le thème et ensuite, on peaufine des textes ensemble.

Riko : Il ya beaucoup d’échanges. Comme c’est moi qui écris mais c’est elle qui chante, il faut qu’elle puisse s’approprier la chanson. Il faut que le rythme lui convienne, les sujets abordés lui conviennent. C’est hyper important.

Marie : il faut que je puisse m’approprier le texte pour mettre à la chanson l’émotion que je veux mettre sur l’enregistrement ou sur scène.

Marie donc c’est toi qui a le dernier mot en fait ?

Marie& Riko en riant  : oui, un peu

L’album commence avec une chanson qui s’appelle Le Blond, la Brute et l’Truand. Est-ce que c’est le  western de Sergio Leone (Le Bon, La Brutte et le Truand) qui vous a inspiré ?

Riko : En fait, il y a un clin d’œil. Mais après à la deuxième lecture, Le Blond, La brute et le Truand est un texte un peu politique, où, en gros le Blond c’est Trump, le truand, c’est Bolsonaro, et la brute, c’est Poutine. Quand on lit le texte, on le comprend. J’aime bien les jeux de mots, les textes à tiroirs à double sens.

Pink Punk c’est ma chanson préférée de l’album. Quelle est l’histoire de cette chanson ?

Riko : Marie m’a fait part d’un thème qu’elle voulait. On a tous quelqu’un qu’on admire, une muse qui nous inspire qui nous fait sentir plus grands. Et à Marc et à moi, ça nous tenait à cœur aussi ce thème.

En fait, tu vois, c’est très démocratique la façon dont on travaille. On discute beaucoup et il faut qu’on soit tous d’accord sur ce qu’on va faire.

Est-ce qu’il y a une chanson qui compte plus pour chacun d’entre vous ?

Marie : Au niveau du texte, pour moi c’est Crash Test. C’est un sujet fort dont on entend parler, pas tous les jours mais presque. La violence conjugale. Quand je la chante, je mets toute la rage et tout mon cœur. Je pense à toutes les femmes qui endurent des années de violence.

Riko: Moi, c’est Mon Pote Al, et pour Marc aussi . C’est une chanson qui traite d’Alzheimer. Je trouve que le titre est particulièrement réussi. L’idée est de personnifier la maladie comme si c’était une personne. Et on a cet échange entre le personnage, le malade, et la maladie comme si c’était un ami.

En fait chaque chanson de l’album aborde un thème différent. Amalgame parle de racisme. Vous l’avez écrit dans quel contexte ?

Riko : On l’a écrit au moment des élections présidentielles, ici in France. Alors nous, on n’est pas du tout fan de toute cette dérive, un peu extrême. Pour nous, c’est un peu « no pasaran ». ça ne passera jamais. Il y a eu des trucs tellement ignobles qui ont été dites que ça nous a inspiré de faire quelque chose là-dessus. On a tous une place sur cette planète, c’est un peu le thème de la chanson.

Vous avez travaillé avec Fred Duquesne. Comment ça s’est passé cette collaboration ? Quel a été son influence sur votre musique ?

Marie : on a choisi Fred parce que son travail est parfait. On lui a donné un titre test pour voir ce qu’il pouvait faire avec notre album et on a été conquis. C’est tout à fait ce qu’on cherchait au niveau du son. Moi, il m’a bluffé en tout cas. C’est exactement ce que je voulais entendre, le son un peu américain. On est très contents.

Riko : On avait plusieurs pistes qui n’étaient pas mal, mais pour l’esthétique on voulait défendre, un peu peps, un peu qui bastonne, un peu américain, le choix a été très bien. On lui a laissé complètement carte blanche, il a fait un peu ce qu’il voulait.

L’idée n’était pas non plus d’arriver et de lui dire maintenant faire ça et ça, car dans ce cas, il n’y a pas d’intérêt. On voulait qu’il puisse rajouter sa patte et Il a fait des choix que nous, on n’aura jamais fait parce que quand tu es dedans, tu n’as pas la même vision.

Marie : il a apporté une oreille neuve.

Riko : effectivement, il voit de choses ou il entend des choses. Il a fait des choix qui sont superbes, incroyables. Et en plus, il est c’est super sympa, gentil, un mec super.

L’art work de la pochette est génial. Qui l’a créé ?

Riko : On travaille depuis des années avec Antoine Lemonnier qui est notre graphiste. Comme on sortait du confinement à l’époque et même avant, j’avais commencé à réfléchir et je voulais un truc un peu en mode close-up, un peu tristounet, un peu austère avec une fenêtre vers l’extérieur.

Pas forcément sous cette forme-là, mais on lui a exposé le sujet. On a discuté et après plusieurs échanges, il nous a proposé ce visuel-là. C’était ce que je voyais.

Marie :  c’était évident. C’est vraiment très beau, on a envie de mettre en cadre.

Riko : on a aussi mis 3 symboles personnels dans la pochette.

Marie : ils sont cachés, donc il faut bien regarder pour les trouver.

Marie, quand est-ce que tu as commencé à chanter et qu’est ce qui t’a donné envie de chanter ?

Marie : Mon papa est musicien et j’ai écouté beaucoup de jazz à la maison.

Il ya beaucoup des chanteuses qui m’ont inspiré étant jeune et quand on est gosse, on prend le micro et on essaie de faire pareil. Et je pense que, inconsciemment, j’ai appris à chanter comme ça.

Le fait de chanter évoque des choses, des émotions et depuis toute petite, j’ai trouvé génial de chanter.

J’écoutais un peu de tout, mais c’est au lycée que j’ai commencé à écouter du rock.  

Tu as une chanteuse préférée en moment ?

Marie : J’adore Jeanne Added, elle a une voix extraordinaire. Aussi, la chanteuse de Paramore , Hayley Williams et plein d’autres. Après j’aime de chanteurs aussi. Allan Bashung, j’adore.

Riko, comment tu as démarré la guitare ?

Riko : Moi, je n’ai pas commencé avec la guitare. J’ai commencé à la clarinette quand j’étais au conservatoire à 5 ou 6 ans, après je suis passé au piano. Et puis à 14 ans, enfin à l’adolescence j’ai tout envoyé bazarder. J’ai acheté une guitare avec mes potes et puis on a monté un petit groupe.

Ton Guitar Hero ?

Riko: Marty Friedman.

Comme la mode est très lié au rock, dites-moi quel est votre style et quelles sont vos pièces préférées dans votre garde-robe ?

Riko : c’est cool cette question. Mon style est en fait comme je suis habillé aujourd’hui (ndlr : il commence à enlever son pull, il faut savoir qu’il faisait froid au Dr Feelgood dans cette après-midi de février donc on portait tous plusieurs couches de vêtements). Donc chemise et gilet noir.

Marie : (commence à se déshabiller aussi) Mois j’ai plusieurs styles. Je suis assez  « garçon manqué » mais j’aime être féminine aussi, avoir des vêtements près du corps.

Riko : on aime bien l’esthétique, un peu rock, un peu un peu classe. Sur scène c’est pareil. Je trouve que ça colle à notre musique. Si on faisait du grunge, je pense que ça serait différent.

Vous avez fait beaucoup de concerts. J’ai vu que vous avez même ouvert pour Lou Reed comment ça s’est passé cet événement ?

Riko : C’était dans un festival, à Montereau Confluences, vers chez nous. Il était la tête d’affiche. C’est fou, tu ne le croise pas mais le fait d’ouvrir pour des gens comme ça t’oblige en fait à monter ton niveau d’un cran. Tu apprends beaucoup de choses parce que tu ne peux pas te permettre de te louper devant vingt mille personnes. C’est hyper Intéressant.

Est-ce que vous avez déjà prévu une tournée ?

Riko : c’est en préparation. C’est Marc qui gère le booking parce qu’on n’a pas de tourneur. Mais c’est en cours et c’est très long. c’est un peu une bouteille à la mer…mais il y aura une tournée avec des dates à l’automne

Marie : Et en 2025

Est-ce que vous avez une scène ou un festival en particulier ou vous aimeriez bien chanter ?

Marie : Les Francofolies de la Rochelle

Riko : Moi, j’aimerais bien à Rock En Seine ou au Inrocks.

Un artiste avec qui vous aimeriez partager la scène ?

Marie : Astonvilla, parce que on les a vu sur scène il ya peu de temps et ils sont tellement bien, tellement humains. Leur musique nous parle. Ça, chante en français donc pourquoi ne pas partager la scène avec eux. On est dans la même veine finalement.

Riko : moi, c’est pareil Astonvilla et puis après, Foo Fighters.

Pour la fin, est-ce que vous pourriez me décrire votre album en quelque mots ?

Marie : espoir.

French rock band, AGUELENNA released their self-titled debut album, on February 2, 2024 via M&O. Music.  Energetic rock, beautiful melodies, charismatic vocals in French, committed lyrics and a catchy rhythmic, the trio surfs on the wave of big American rock while creating its own effective French rock style.

I had the great pleasure of meeting MARIE BEAUREPAIRE (vocals) and RIKO LACAN (guitar) who talked to us about the band, the new record, their inspirations, and many other things. 

While waiting to see them on stage, I invite you to discover the interview but also the album and the music videos, the latest, titled La Goutte, has just been released.

Hi Marie and Riko, to start with, could you introduce of the AGUELENNA?

Marie: The project started in 2007 with Riko who the guitarist and me, as a singer. We started at the very beginning with small concerts, doing covers. The compositions came afterwards. We changed the line-up a few times. We met Marc (Limballe) who is our drummer now, in 2015 and after that, we started to work seriously on which path we were going to follow: Pop or Rock.  And we chose the Rock one.

Riko: We used to be more pop. It was a little less peppy and when Marc arrived into the project, he came up with the idea of taking a slightly more energetic turn. There has been a lot of discussion about this. We had done a few EPs before and then in 2017, we released a 4-track EP, Jour de Foire, in which we really feel this much more energetic turn, a little more pop punk, rock and so, we continued in this trajectory. 

So, I guess you do not all have the same influences then ?

Riko: No, not at all, it’s quite broad. I’m the most metal of them all, I also love the American rock. Marie also loves American rock.

Where does the name AGUELENNA come from?

Riko: It’s Spanish. In fact, in the original word, there is no letter “U” and no double N, but there is the letter ñ (eñe in Spanish). Ageleña is a small spider that has the particularity of living in a community, like ants.  They share the tasks: there are those who weave the web, others who raise the little ones, etc. This is a very rare fact for a spider since they usually live alone. I found this by chance, and I thought it was funny.

Your new album was released on February 2nd via M&O Music. When and how did you write it? 

Riko: As soon as the EP was released in 2017, we started working on this album. We spent a year and a half doing it and we started recording in February 2020. And as we know, in March 2020 everything stopped.

When you’re a musician and you’re in a recording dynamic, you’re really focused on the work and so, Covid scattered us a bit, we couldn’t see each other anymore. It was really hard because we had to get back to that recording dynamic after 2021. We took the time to finalize it, mix it, have it mastered. It seemed quite a long time to us.

We have a very democratic the way of work, we discuss a lot, and we all have to agree on what we’re going to do.

How do you work together? Who makes the music? Who writes the texts? 

Marie: We work together a lot. We talk a lot, we agree on a lot of things. It’s Riko who writes. On my side, I find my melodies. I have themes that are close to my heart and in fact, as I “impose” certain subjects to him, the 3 of us must agree on the theme and then, we refine texts together.

Riko: There’s a lot of back-and-forth. Since I’m the one who writes but Marie is the one who sings, she has to be able to make the song her own. The rhythm has to suit her, the themes he tackles suit her. It’s super important.

Marie: I have to be able to appropriate the text to give it the emotion I want to put on the recording or on stage.

Marie, then basically,  you have the last word?

Marie& Riko (laughing ) : yes, a little bit

The album starts with a song called Le Blond, la Brute et le Truand. Was it Sergio Leone’s western ( The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) that inspired you?

Riko: Actually, there’s a nod here but if you read the lyrics, The Blond, The Brute and the Ugly is a somewhat political text, where, basically, the Blond is Trump, the Ugly is Bolsonaro, and the Brute is Poutine. I like puns, double-meaning texts. 

Pink Punk is my favourite song on the album. What is the story behind this song?

Riko: Marie shared with me a theme that she wanted. We all have someone we admire, a muse who inspires us, who makes us feel greater. And Marc and I were also keen on this theme.

In fact, we have a very democratic way of work, we discuss a lot, and we all have to agree on what we’re going to do.

Is there a song that matters more to each of you?

Marie: In terms of lyrics, for me it’s Crash Test. It’s a strong subject that we hear about almost every day. Domestic violence. When I sing it, I put all my rage and all my heart into it. I think of all these women who endure years of violence.

Riko: For Marc and myself is Mon Pote Al ( My Buddy Al). It’s a song about Alzheimer’s. I think the title is really good. The idea is to personify the disease as if it were a person. And there is this exchange between the character, the patient, and the illness as if it were a friend.

In fact, each song on the album deals with a different theme. Amalgam is about racism. In what context did you write it?

Riko: We wrote it at the time of the presidential elections, here France. So, we’re not at all fans of all this drift, which is a bit extreme. For us, it’s a bit of a “no pasaran”. It will never pass. There were some such vile things that were said that it inspired us to do something about it. We all have a place on this planet. That’s kind of the theme of the song.

You worked with Fred Duquesne. How did this collaboration go? What was his influence on your music?

Marie: We chose Fred because his work is perfect. We gave him a test track to see what he could do with our album and we were hooked. That’s exactly what we were looking for in terms of sound. In any case, he blew me away. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear, the slightly American sound. We are very happy.

Riko: For the aesthetics we wanted to defend, a little pep, a little brawl, a little American, the choice was very good. We gave him complete carte blanche, he did what he wanted.

The idea was also not to come in and tell him now to do this and that, because in that case there is no interest. We wanted him to be able to add his touch and he made choices that we would never have made because when you’re in it, you don’t have the same vision.

 Marie: He brought a new ear. 

Riko: Right, he sees things or he hears things. He’s made choices that are superb, incredible. And on top of that, he’s super nice, a great guy.

The artwork on the cover is awesome. Who created it?

Riko: We’ve been working for years with Antoine Lemonnier, who is our graphic designer. As we were coming out of lockdown at the time and even before, I had started to think about it and I wanted something a bit close-up, a little sad, a little austere with a window to the outside. Not necessarily in that form, but we explained to him what we wanted. We talked and after several exchanges, he came up with this visual. It was exactly what I was thinking.

Marie: it was obvious, we’re very happy with it. It’s so beautiful that we can put it in a frame. 

Riko: We also put 3 personal symbols in the cover.

Marie: They’re hidden, so you have to look hard to find them.

Marie, when did you start singing and what made you want to sing?

Marie: My dad is a musician and I listened to a lot of jazz at home. There are a lot of singers who inspired me when I was young and when you’re a kid, you take the mic and try to do the same. And I think, subconsciously, I learned to sing like that.  Singing evokes things, emotions and since I was a little girl, I have found it great to sing. I listened to a little bit of everything, but it was in high school that I started listening to rock music.

Do you have a favourite female singer now?

Marie: I love Jeanne Added, she has an amazing voice. Also, the singer of Paramore, Hayley Williams and many others. Then I like male singers too. Allan Bashung, I love it.

Riko, how did you start playing guitar?

Riko: Actually, I started playing the clarinet when I was at the conservatory when I was 5 or 6 years old, then I switched to the piano. And then when I was 14, well as a teenager, I threw everything away. I bought a guitar with my friends and then we started a little band. 

Your Guitar Hero?

Riko : Marty Friedman.

Since fashion is very much linked to rock, tell me what is your style and what are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?

Riko: That’s a cool question. My style is actually the way I’m dressed today (editor’s note: he took off his sweater and show his so black shirt and waistcoat)

Marie: (starts to undress too) I have several styles. I’m quite a “tomboy” but I like to be feminine too, to have clothes close to the body. 

Riko: We like the aesthetic, a little bit rock and classy. It’s the same on stage. I think it fits our music. If we were playing grunge, I think our fashion style would have been different.

You’ve done a lot of concerts. I saw that you even opened for Lou Reed, how did that event go?

Riko: It was at a festival, in Montereau Confluences, near our home. He was the headliner. It’s crazy, you didn’t meet him but the fact that you’re opening for people like that, it actually forces you to take it up a notch. You learn a lot because you can’t afford to mess up in front of twenty thousand people. It’s super interesting.

Have you already planned to tour the album?

Riko: It’s on going. It’s Marc who manages the booking because we don’t have a tour booker. But it’s ongoing and it’s very long. It’s a bit like a bottle in the sea… but there will be a tour with dates this fall

Marie: And in 2025

Do you have a particular stage or festival where you would like to perform?

Marie: Les Francofolies de la Rochelle

Riko: Rock En Seine or Inrocks.

And an artist you’d like to share the stage with?

Marie: Astonvilla, because we saw them on stage some time ago and they are so good, so human. Their music speaks to us. This sing in French also, so why not share the stage with them. We’re in the same vein in the end. 

Riko: For me, it’s the same, Astonvilla and also Foo Fighters.

For the end, could you describe your album in a few words?

Marie: Hope.
