Paul Banks ne cesse pas de nous surprendre. Frontman du groupe indie rock Interpol, la moitié du duo Banks + Steelz (avec RZA du Wu-Tang Clan), des albums solos, le voilà embaqué dans un nouveau projet, un Supergroupe, appelé MUZZ.
Rejoint par deux amis de longue date : le multi-instrumentiste et producteur Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman) et le batteur Matt Barrick (The Walkmen et batteur sur la tournée Banks & Steelz), leur premier album éponyme est sorti le 5 juin 2020 via Matador Records.
Et autant vous prévenir dès le début, MUZZ est tout simplement superbe. Tendre, sophistiqué, élégant, les superlatives ne manquent pas pour qualifier ce premier opus qui dévoile une alchimie incontestable entre 3 musiciens talentueux.
MUZZ c’est donc une histoire d’amitié surtout entre Paul Banks et Josh Kaufman qui se connaissent et font de la musique ensemble depuis l’adolescence (photos à l’appui sur les réseaux sociaux) et un groupe a démarré en 2015 et a mis longtemps pour expérimenter, mûrir et enregistrer ces 12 titres.
Une voix sombre et sensuelle, des sublimes guitares, des sonorités classiques et modernes se mêlent et s’entremêlent créant une ouvre d’une remarquable beauté.
Bad Feeling, ouvre l’album magistralement avec des guitares douces, orgues mélancoliques et saxophones jazzy. Des sonorités chaudes, la voix tendre de Banks est accompagnée joliment par des chœurs féminins.
Un merveilleux groovy sound, soyeux et velouté pour Evergreen est ses arrangements électro -psychédéliques, magnifiquement soignés. Une voix en parfaite en osmose avec les guitares, au début plus calme et qui s’ouvre de façon plus expansive au refrain. Une chanson qui évoque un mysterieux medicament “One medication, one thing to bring you over, One thing to make it nice, tonight, I’ll tell you”. Sans doute mon morceau préféré de l’album.
Le rythme s’accélère avec Red Western Sky, un long voyage crépusculaire, une sorte une échappatoire de vieux démons, une quête spirituelle, une méditation sur la santé mentale qui est un thème important de cet album. “Red Western sky show me what to do Give me time to cry, give me long night through”
Patchouli est une rêverie sous un ciel étoilé, une merveilleuse superposition des couches instrumentales, des synthés brillantes à l’appui. On dirait une histoire d’amour subtile et très intime.
Everything Like It Used To Be est plus folk, cadencé et joyeux. Du piano, des chants d’oiseaux, le vent qui caresse les feuilles d’arbres, des petits grésillements, Broken Tambourine semble être joué quelque part au milieu de la nature. Le rythme monte au fur et à mesure comme les battements d’un cœur face à une émotion puissante. Banks utilise son côté crooner sensible et vulnérable, les paroles sont magnifiques “I watch you dream It’s heavenly heaven”
Avec Knuckleduster le morceau le plus Interpol-esque, on monte la cadence et on parle d’émeutes, de révolutions, du monde actuel mais aussi d’une relation. “The streets are on fire, Riot ascending high, Remembrance is born today”
How Many Days est un mélange guitares électriques et de batterie jazz-beat, un peu latino. Summer Love est simple, nostalgique, épuré. Chubby Checker est entêtant, All is Dead To Me est très mélancolique et Trinidad extrêmement tendre (une belle version acoustique enregistré pendent la confinement)
Inspirés par Leonard Cohen, Neil Young ou Bob Dylan, un esprit vintage raffiné plane aux dessus de la totalité de cet album. Le terme “Muzz” est d’ailleurs utilisé par Kaufman pour décrire une certaine “texture de son ”qu’on peut trouver dans les vieux enregistrements. Un terme qui va très bien, car l’album a été enregistré plutôt à l’ancienne avec des vrais amplis.
Les paroles, écrites par Banks mais en collaboration avec ses compagnons de bande, sont des réflexions personnelles qui invoquent des images des océans, des larges plages, des horizons infinis.
Voix profonde et séduisante, guitares délicats, batterie gracieuse, cordes subtils, MUZZ est un album sombre mais qui dégage une énergie positive, un univers calme et attendrissant. Muzz est un album cinématographique, un album charmant, plein d’émotion et de sincérité qui apaisent nous esprits et nous fait voyager.
Un album éblouissant, un récit poétique d’une parfaite maitrise vocale et instrumentale.

Paul Banks keeps surprising us. Frontman of the indie-rock band Interpol, the half of the duo Banks and Steelz (with RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan), solo albums, here he comes again with a new project, a Super Group called MUZZ.
Joined by two long-time friends: the multi-instrumentalist and producer Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman) and drummer Matt Barrick (The Walkmen and drummer on the Banks & Steelz tour), their self-titled debut album was released on June 5, 2020 via Matador Records.
And I let you know the beginning, MUZZ is simply superb. Tender, sophisticated, elegant, the superlatives are not missing to qualify this first record that reveals an undeniable alchemy between 3 talented musicians.
MUZZ is therefore a story of friendship especially between Paul Banks and Josh Kaufman who know each other and make music together since they were teenagers (proving photos on social networks), a band that started in 2015 and that took a long time to experiment, mature and record these 12 tracks. Dark, sensual vocals, sublime guitars, classical and modern sounds are divinely mixed creating a work of remarkable beauty.
Bad Feeling, opens the album masterfully with soft guitars, melancholy organs and jazzy saxophones. Banks‘ tender voice is warmly accompanied by female vocals.
A wonderful groovy sound, silky and velvety for Evergreen is its electro-psychedelic arrangements. The voice in perfect osmosis with the guitars, at first calm, it become more expansive to the chorus. A song that evokes a mysterious medicine “One medication, one thing to bring you over One thing to make it nice, tonight, I’ll tell you”. For sure my favourite track from the album.
The pace accelerates with Red Western Sky, a long twilight journey, a kind of escape from old demons, a spiritual quest. In fact, a meditation on mental health, an important theme of this album. “Red Western sky show me what to do, Give me time to cry, give me long night through”.
Patchouli is dream under a starry sky, a wonderful mix of instrumental layers, with guitars and brilliant synths in support. It sounds like a very intimate love story.
Everything like It Used To Be is folk and joyful. Piano, birds singing, the wind that caresses the leaves of trees, Broken Tambourine seems to be played somewhere in the middle of the nature. The rhythm rises as it progresses, as a heartbeat face to a powerful emotion. Banks uses his sensitive and vulnerable crooner side, la lyrics are wonderful “I watch you dream It’s heavenly heaven”.
With Knuckleduster the most Interpol-esque song, the pace is stronger. A song that talk about riots, revolutions, the current world but also a relationship. “The streets are on fire, Riot ascending high Remembrance is born today”
How Many Days is a mix of electric guitars, jazz-beat drums and Latino rhythms. Summer Love is simple, nostalgic, minimalist. Chubby Checker is catchy, All is Dead To Me is very melancholic and Trinidad extremely tender (a beautiful acoustic version was recorded during the quarantine).
Inspired by classics, like Leonard Cohen, Neil Young or Bob Dylan, a refined vintage spirit haunts the entire album. The term “Muzz” is also used by Kaufman to describe a certain “texture of sound” that can be found in old recordings. A term that goes very well with their music, because the album was recorded in a rather old manner with real amps and microphones.
The lyrics, written by Banks but in collaboration with his bandmates, are personal reflections that invoke images of the oceans, wide beaches, large spaces, infinite horizons. A cinematic album. Deep and seductive voice, delicate guitars, graceful drums, subtle strings, MUZZ is a rather dark album but that release a positive energy, a calm and charming universe.
Muzz is an album full of emotion and sincerity that soothes our minds and makes us travel. A dazzling and poetic album, extremely soulful with perfect vocals and instrumental mastery.
