Nous revoilà cette année sur les terres de Clisson, en Loire-Atlantique, pour célébrer la 14 édition du HELLFEST, la grande messe du heavy metal. Comme ces dernières années, HELLFEST affichait COMPLET ! Les Pass de 3 jours ont été épuisé en 1h30 après leur mise en vente en Octobre dernier !
La grande nouveauté 2019 est que nous avons pu profiter d’un warm-up, le jeudi, 20 juin, avec le KNOTFEST, le festival itinérant de groupe SLIPKNOT pour sa première édition européenne. Les américains masqués et leur 9 invités AMARANTHE, AMON AMARTH, BEHEMOTH, MINISTRY, POWERWOLF, ROB ZOMBIE, SICK OF IT ALL nous ont offert une belle journée avec de concerts de très bonne qualité qui se sont déroulés sur les 2 Main Stages du site.
Quant au traditionnels 3 jours dans le royaume de l’enfer, en plus de grands noms comme Kiss, Slayer, Slash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tool ou ZZ Top, il y a eu environ 170 concerts qui ont réuni plus 60.000 festivaliers par jour, des milliers de journalistes, photographes et VIP.
Si la réputation de HELLFEST est surtout liée aux groupes de métal pur et dur, il y en a pour tous les goûts et cette année il n’y a pas eu d’exception : du rock, du blues, du punk ou du glam et le métal de tous les types death, black, trash, nu, industriel, absolument tous les styles ont été représentés.
La mauvaise nouvelle a été l’annulation du concert très attendu de MANOWAR, même si le groupe et son équipe était présent sur le site. Le communiqué officiel du festival mentionne l’annulation « Pour des raisons indépendantes de notre volonté », laissant la place à beaucoup de polémiques surtout après le communiqué du groupe qui accuse les organisateurs d’avoir entravé leurs efforts pour mettre en place un spectacle épique.
L’année dernière, le leader du groupe, Joey di Mayo himself était venu spécialement pour annoncer leur participation au festival et il avait promis un show grandiose. Evidemment beaucoup de fans s’étaient déplacés pour voir leur concert. Déception totale…Mais j’en suis sûre que cela a été très bien compensé avec les autres concerts et à la fin chacun a pu trouver son bonheur.
Sinon les NOUVEAUTES sur le site : en plus de décors traditionnels : les arbres, les fontaines, la grande roue, les bars container qui crache du feu, le metal market, cette année les organisateurs se sont surpassés en termes d’aménagements – des airs de repos améliorées, un très joli et bien fourni food court avec une magnifique fontaine au milieu, une nouvelle sculpture « Hell Bell », et surtout l’écran panoramique impressionnant de 150 mètres de long sur les Main Stages.
La METEO : Le soleil a été au rendez-vous tous les jours, malgré les mises en garde contre la pluie et les grosses tempêtes. Chapeaux, casquettes, bandanas, crèmes solaires et même petit sweater, car le soir il faisait frisquet, il fallait bien préparer son sac.
LES FESTIVALIERS – les plus que 180 000 métalleux de 7 à 77 ans ont été au rendez-vous, enthousiasts et passionnées comme d’habitude. Les T- Shirt noirs à l’effigie de leur group préfère, du festival et les jeans étaient de rigueur. Sinon des imprimées cranes, croix, des messages de toute sortent affluait devant les scènes. Il y avait aussi des déguisements plus ou moins farfelus : des ecclésiastiques, des vikings, des vampires ou des Pikachou. Notons les tatouages impressionnants et de super beaux maquillages.
A HELLFEST, on peut s’habiller comme on veut sans craindre les commentaires déplacés. Tout le monde est super cool.
Ce fut ma 3ème participation à HELLFEST et toujours le même dilemme avec la programmation très dense. Difficile de faire son choix entre les artistes qu’on veut absolument voir, les légendes qu’on n’aura peut-être plus l’occasion de voir ou les étoiles montantes qu’il ne faut surtout pas rater.
J’ai essayé de faire un parcours assez varié et éclectique. J’avais bien préparé mon planning en avance mais avec les kilomètres parcourus entre les 6 scènes du site, la fatigue, la chaleur ou parfois l’impossibilité d’accéder à certain concerts (Les WAMPAS à Warzone), je l’ai adapté au fur et à mesure. Ceci dit, j’ai fait à peu près tous ce j’avais envisagé. Voilà le résumé :
Day 1 – KNOTFEST – Une vraie réussite !
Premiers sur ma liste, les Californiens de PAPA ROACH mettent le feu à la Mainstage 1 avec un show fracassant. Un Jacoby Shaddix habillé en chemise léopard, en grand forme qui court d’un bout à l’autre de la scène et chauffe le public. Une belle occasion d’écouter en live les nouveaux titres de leur album Who do We trust ? sorti en début d’année. Sans oublier une vibrant hommage au regretté chanteur de Prodigy, Keith Flint, avec la reprise de Firestarter.
Les allemands de POWERWOLF nous souhaitent la bienvenue « à la sainte messe du Heavy Metal ». Leur power metal bien puissant nous invite dans un monde peuplé de loups garous (Werewolves of Armenia) ou des vampires (We Drink Your Blood). Décidément ma palme d’or du meilleur maquillage et des plus beaux costumes, Mi X Men – Mi Avatar. Un grand bravo au très charismatique frontman Attila Dorn qui s’adresse à la foule dans un français parfait. Excellent Armata Strigoi avec grande participation du public.
D’autres personnages sortis tout droit de ses films d’horreur, nous présente Rob Zombie et sa bande. Meet the Creeper, Living Dead Girl, Dragula, ou la reprise de Helter Skelter des Beatles : le chanteur est en grande forme et enchaine ses plus gros titres. Les costumes et les maquillages sont magnifiques. Un show dansant et énergique – personne ne tient en place. J’ai adoré !
Grand show pour les têtes d’affiche de la soirée, Slipknot. Le show est bien huilé et méga puissant mais je trouve le son un peu brouillon. Quant aux nouveaux masques, surtout cette de Corey Taylor, elles ne m’impressionnent pas. Ceux que nous avons pu voir dans le petit musée improvisé sur le site, étaient bien meileurs.
SABATON clôture le Knotfest mais reviendrons le lendemain pour remplacer MANOWAR. Une spectaculaire incursion dans leur power métal avec des textes inspirés de l’univers de la guerre. La scène ressemble au champ de bataille, entouré de poteaux et des barbelés, les choristes portent des uniformes de soldats. C’est du spectacle !
Highlights sur les 3 jours HELLFEST
Within Temptation, les maitres du métal mélodique et symphonique, délivre le show le plus élégant du festival bien, sur grâce à la chanteuse Sharon Den Adel. Des mélodies sombres et puissante, la formation Néerlandaise a construit un set list autour du Resist, leur dernier excellent album. La chanteuse très souriante, déchaînée et gracieuse, entourée des musiciens talentueux, est sublimissime.
Eagles of Death Metal font un excellent grand retour live en France sous un soleil de plomb. Le front man, Jesse Hugues est très ému de retrouver le public français et lui remercie plusieurs fois « Vous ne nous n’avez pas laissé tomber » main sur son badge Life For Paris. Accompagné de sa guitare il s’offre un bain de foule prolongé. Mention spéciale pour Jennie Vee à la basse et son costume de cowboy bleu ciel.
Show magnifique pour Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. Le guitar-hero est tout simplement époustouflant. Formidable démonstration de sa vitrosité à la guitare, une baguette magique entre ses mains. Et puisqu’on parle de baguette magique pourquoi ne pas mentionner à la batterie, Bret Fintz qui en plus de manier se baguettes comme un champion, il ressemble étonnement au professeur Rogue (bon, petite parenthèse Harry Potter). Magistral Nightrain, la seule reprise des Guns N’Roses, même si Myles Kennedy n’arrive pas avoir le même charisme que Axl Rose, malgré ses efforts.
Une autre leçon de virtuosité avec SLAYER – Kerry King, Tom Araya, Gary Holt et Paul Bostaph impériaux pour un formidable show d’adieux. Une dernière occasion d’écouter les riffs incendiaires de King et la voix percutante d’Araya sur Seasons in the Abyss, Raining Blood ou Angel of Death. Très ému Tom Araya remercie le public. Grand Feu d’artifices pour conclure un concert magistral de 1h30.
Les Frenchies
Le vendredi, 21 Juin la Mainstage2 a été entièrement consacré aux groupes français de métal – une première pour HELLFEST et évidement une très bonne idée pour la promotion de ces groupes si peu médiatisés en France. NO ONE IS INNOCENT super énergique et engagé avec le chanteur Kemar, très en forme. La foule forme une grand circle pit.
Les marseillais de DAGOBA et leur métal très agressif délivre un énorme show sous un soleil brulant, mettant les cervicales à dure épreuve. Là c’est le wall of death qui se forme et le choque est énorme. Le groupe est très content d’être de retour à Hellfest. Je n’ai pas pris de photos du concert mais j’ai eu le plaisir de les voir une conférence de presse. Il faut savoir que le 4 garçons sont très aimés en Asie et ils ont récemment tourné en Chine et au Japon et ils en gardent des bons souvenirs. Nouvel album en préparation.
Ultra Vomit et leur rock parodique, un passage obligé et très attendu du groupe nantais au hometown festival. C’est fou, marrant et décalé. Le public adore, chante et pogote. On parle céleri rémoulade et des poireaux sont brandis dans la foule, on forme l’équipe pipi et caca…Ils invitent même un sosie de Calogero pour leur reprise de Face à la Mer. Givrés !
Les AS du TRASH / DEATH METAL
Venom INC ont craché leur venin death metal vendredi soir avec le vétéran Jeff “Mantas” Dunn (guitare) et le très expressif Tony “The Demolition Man” Dolan (chant, basse) et CARCASS sont à la hauteur devant un public nombreux et très actif, malgré l’heure tardive de leur programmation.
Grand coup de cœur pour TESTAMENT, l’un des groupes les plus populaires de la scène trash et un de mes préférés de tous les temps. L’enthousiasme, la force et la rapidité de leur musique est intacte. En plus, j’ai eu le plaisir de participer à la conférence de presse de Chick Billy (chant) et Eric Peterson (guitare) plus tôt dans la journée.
Ils ont parlé de leur musique, le prochain album ou ce qu’ils manquent pendant les tournée (pour Chuck ce sont ses chiens qui lui manquent).
Très bons aussi Anthrax et leur trash métal délirant. Ils n’oublient pas d’interpréter sa célèbre cover de Trust – Antisocial, chantée en cœur par la foule.
LAMB OF GOD délivre un show impressionnant et ultra puissant. Le frontman, Randy Blythe monte sur l’estrade de la batterie, saute, fait tourner ses dreads avec frénésie et lance de regards féroces à la foule, toute en l’encourageant de se donner à fond. Précédant LYNYRD SKYNYRD dans le running order ils profitent pour leur dédier une chanson. Un autre titre sera dédié à Slayer qui se produira sur la même scène un peu plus tard dans la soirée. La fosse est en délire et lance un circle pit gigantesque.
Avec les très gore BLOODBATH – c’est la descente en enfer : lumières rouges, fumé et déluge de décibels, les musiciens mettent le paquet. Le death metal suédois à la perfection.
LES VETERANS
Le groupe mythique de 80’s , WHITESNAKE n’a pas changé. Le séduisant David Coverdale a gardé son charme et sa magnifique voix. Un grand plaisir d’écouter encore les hymnes Here I go again ou Is this love ?
ZZ Top célèbre les 50 ans de carrière avec une excellent show « best of blues rock N roll » Gimme All Your Lovin’ ou La Grange – tout le monde dance et chante avec eux. Veste à paillettes, les chapeaux et surtout les longe barbes sont bien là. Très belle prestation.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD délivre leur légendaire rock sudiste qui ravie les fans. Un vrai plaisir pour moi d’écouter pour la première fois Sweet Home Alabama et Free Bird en live.
KISS – maquillages, perruques, bottes plateforme, tenues argentés flamboyantes, la langue de Gene Simmons, de guitares scintillantes, tout est en place. Un show spectaculaire avec des lasers, jets de feux ou plateformes volantes. Les américains restent fidèles à leur réputation. Et la Kiss Army est heureuse avec un tel show, dernier de leur carrière ou pas.
John Petrucci et ses acolytes, aka Dream Theater montre une grande maitrise de leur métal progressif originaire de Long Island.
Les DECOUVERTES
SKÁLD Très bonne surprise de la part du trio français qui puise son inspiration dans la mythologie nordique. Des vieux instruments, la voix magnifique de la chanteuse, ils font revivre la poésie des anciens scaldes qui chantaient dans leur langue – le vieux norrois – l’histoire des peuples et des dieux vikings. Mêlant narration scandée et chants rythmés, un show puissant et envoutant qui captivent auditoire.
DEMOND AND WIZARDS – le groupe du guitariste américain Jon Schaffer et du chanteur allemand Hansi Kürsch, un projet commun prend forme en 1997, mais qui refait surface récemment. Dans le registre heavy-power métal aux accents symphoniques, très belle prestation.
Très beau et totalement différent le concert de la violoncelliste, JO QUAIL, en solo, qui remplace MYRKUR Folkensange. Un concert minimaliste et original, avec des morceaux hybrides – du rock et du baroque tout en utilisant des techniques avancées comme de boucles enregistrées en direct. La mélodie et l’émotion sont au rendez – vous.
Bon, voilà, le HELLFEST et leur invité spécial Knotfest ont su tenir leurs promesses et nous régaler de 4 jours fantastiques de musique variée, convivialité et bonne humeur.

As every year in June, back to the lands of Clisson, in Loire-Atlantique, France to celebrate the 14th edition of HELLFEST, the great mass of heavy metal. And once again the festival was SOLD OUT! The 3-day Pass have been sold in only 1h30 in October 2018!
The great novelty in 2019 was that we could enjoy one more day of music on Thursday, June 20, as a warm-up, with the KNOTFEST, the festival organised by the American band, SLIPKNOT which was taking place for the first time in Europe.
The masked Americans and their 9 guests: AMARANTHE, AMON AMARTH, BEHEMOTH, MINISTRY, POWERWOLF, ROB ZOMBIE, SICK OF IT ALL offered us a beautiful day with concerts of very good quality on the 2 Mainstages of Hellfest.
As for the traditional 3 days in the kingdom of hell, in addition to big names like Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Slash, Slayer, Tool or ZZ Top, there were around 170 concerts which brought together more than 60,000 visitors per day, thousands of journalists, photographers and VIP.
If the reputation of HELLFEST is primarily related to the pure and hard metal bands but there’s the rock, blues, punk or glam and of course the all other styles of metal like death, black, trash, nu, industrial metal etc. There is something for everyone.
The bad news was the cancellation of MANOWAR, one of the most expected gigs, even if the band and their team was present on the site. The official festival release mentions the cancellation “for reasons beyond our control”, giving way to much controversy, especially after the band’s communiqué who accused the organizers to have hampered their efforts to put in place an epic show. Last year, the leader of the group, Joey di Mayo himself had come specially to announce their participation to the festival and have promised a spectacular show. Obviously, a lot of fans moved to see their farewell concert. Total disappointment… But I’m sure that finally this has been very well compensated with the other concerts and everyone was able to find happiness.
Let’s talk about what’s new on the site: in addition to traditional installations : trees, fountains, the big wheel, bars container that spits fire, the metal market, the organizers went the extra mile in terms of facilities – airs of rest improved, a very nice and well supplied food Court with a beautiful fountain in the Middle, a new sculpture Hell Bell sculpture and the impressive panoramic screen of 150 meters long on the Mainstages.
Weather: The Sun has been there every day, despite the warnings against the rain and the storms. Hats, caps, bandanas, sunscreens and even a sweater for chilli nights, we had to carefully prepare our bag.
FESTIVALGOERS – more than 180 000 metalheads from 7 to 77 years old were at the rendez vous, enthusiasts and passionate as usual. Black T-Shirts with the image of their favourite band or the Festival and the jeans were uniforms. Otherwise of the printed skulls, crosses, all kind of messages were rolling in front of our eyes.There was also more or less wacky costumes: clergymen, vikings, vampires or the Pikachous. Much more tattoos and super beautiful make-up. Here, you can dress as you want without fearing of inappropriate comments. Everyone is super cool.
This was my 3rd time attending HELLFEST and as always, the same dilemma with very dense running order. Difficult to make our choice between the artists we absolutely want to see, the legends that you’ll maybe see for the last time or the rising stars that should not be missed. I tried to build a path quite varied and eclectic. I had prepared my schedule in advance but with the kilometres between the 6 stages from the site, the tiredness, the heat or sometimes the difficulty to access to certain concerts (Les WAMPAS to Warzone because of too many fans), I adapted it. But I will not complain because I did almost everything I wanted to do and I spent and incredible 4-days weekend. The summary:
Day 1 – KNOTFEST – a real success!
First on my list, the Californians of PAPA ROACH, who set fire to the Mainstage 1 with a smashing show. A Jacoby Shaddix dressed in leopard shirt running like crazy across the stage and heating up the audience. A great opportunity to listen live the new tracks from their album Who do We trust? released beginning of the year. Also, a vibrant tribute to the singer of Prodigy, Keith Flint, with the cover of Firestarter.
The Germans of POWERWOLF welcome us “to the Holy mass of the Heavy Metal”. Their powerful metal invites us in a world populated by werewolves (Werewolves of Armenia) or vampires (We Drink Your Blood). Definitely my Palme d’Or for the best makeup and the most beautiful costumes, something between X Men and Avatar. Congratulations to the very charismatic frontman Attila Dorn, who spoke to the crowd in a perfect French. Excellent Armata Strigoi with large participation of the audience…
Other characters straight out from the horror movies, ROB ZOMBIE and his band. Meet the Creeper, Living Dead Girl, Dragula or the cover of Helter Skelter by the Beatles: the singer is in great shape and mood. The outfits and makeup are wonderful. A dancing and energetic show – everyone enjoyed I loved it!
Big show for the headliners of the night, SLIPKNOT. The show is well oiled and mega powerful but the sound is a bit messy. As for new masks, especially the one Corey Taylor, they don’t impress me. Those we have seen in the small museum on the site, were much better.
SABATON closed the Knotfest but they came back the next day to replace MANOWAR. A spectacular dive into their power metal with lyrics inspired by the world war 1. The stage looks like a battle field, surrounded barbed wire and the choral is dressed in soldiers’ uniforms. Big show!
Highlights on the 3 days HELLFEST
WITHIN TEMPTATION – the masters of melodic and symphonic metal, delivers the most elegant show of festival, for sure thanks to the singer Sharon Den Adel. Dark and powerful melodies, the Dutch band built a set-list around Resist, their excellent new album. The very smiling and graceful singer, surrounded by talented musicians is simply sublime.
EAGLES of DEATH METAL did a great comeback live in France under a blazing sun. The front man, Jesse Hugues is very moved to find the French public and thank several times as “you don’t let us down” hand on his Life For Paris badge. Accompanied by his guitar, he offers himself a long “crowd bath”. Special mention for the wonderful Jennie Vee on bass and her blue cowboy costume.
Beautiful show for SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. The guitar-hero is simply stunning. Great demonstration of his virtuosity on guitar, a magic wand in his hands. And speaking of magic wand why not mention on drums, the great Bret Fintz who in addition to handle his sticks like a champion, he looks like Professor Snape (Harry Potter glance!). Masterful Nightrain, the only cover of Guns N’ Roses, even if despite his efforts and talent, Myles Kennedy does not have the same charisma as Axl Rose.
Another lesson of virtuosity with SLAYER – Kerry King, Tom Araya, Gary Holt and Paul Bostaph, all imperials for a great show to say goodbye. A last opportunity to listen to the incendiary riffs of King and the powerful voice of Araya on Seasons in the Abyss, Raining Blood or Angel of Death. Tom Araya is very moved and thank the audience. Great Fireworks at the end of a Masterful show.
The Frenchies
Friday, June 21 the Mainstage2 was entirely devoted to the French metal bands – a first time for HELLFEST and obviously a very good idea for the promotion of these band so rarely promoted by French media. NO ONE IS INNOCENT super energetic and engaged with singer Kemar, in great shape, heat the crowd who moves in circle pit.
Follows DAGOBA and their very aggressive metal who delivers a huge show putting the audience’s neck to the test. This is time the wall of death is formed and the shocks is huge. The band is very happy to be back at Hellfest. I didn’t get pictures of the concert, but I had the pleasure to see them in press conference. You should know that the 4 boys are very loved in Asia and they have recently toured in China and Japan and they keep the good memories. New album in the pipeline.
ULTRA VOMIT and their parodic rock, a very expected performance in their home town festival. It’s crazy, funny and quirky. The public love, sings and pogote. We’re talking celery rémoulade (a French traditional plate) and leeks are waved in the crowd, they form the team Wee and poop… They invite even a fake Calogero (French pop musician) for their cover of Face à la Mer. Shifted!
The ACEs of the TRASH / DEATH METAL
TESTAMENT one of the most popular bands of the thrash scene and one of my favourites of all time. The enthusiasm, the strength and the speed of their music is intact. In addition, I had the pleasure to participate in the press conference of Chick Billy (vocals) and Eric Peterson (guitar) and here them talking about their music, the upcoming album or what they are missing while on tour (Chuck miss his dogs)
Very good ANTHRAX and their delirious metal trash. They did not forget to perform the legendary and famous cover of Trust-Antisocial. Sung along by the crowd.
VENOM INC spit their venom in a shape of death metal, with the veteran Jeff “Mantas” Dunn (guitar) and very expressive Tony “The Demolition Man” Dolan (vocals, low) and CARCASS are on the Top in front of a large and very active audience, despite the late hour of their programming.
LAMB OF GOD delivers a powerful ultra-impressive show. The frontman, Randy Blythe goes up the podium of the battery, jumps, turns his dreads with frenzy and launches fierce looks to the crowd – all by encouraging them to give their all. Prior to LYNYRD SKYNYRD in the running order, they take the opportunity to dedicate a song to the legendary band. Another title will be dedicated to Slayer who will perform on the same stage later in the evening.
With the very gore BLOODBATH – it is the descent to hell: red lights, smoke and deluge of decibels, the musicians are killing it. The Swedish death metal to perfection.
The VETERANS
The mythical 80’s band, WHITESNAKE, has not changed. The seductive David Coverdale has kept his charm and beautiful voice. A great pleasure to listen to anthems like Here I go again or Is this love?
ZZ TOP is celebrating 50 years of career with a great show ‘best of rock N roll blues’ Gimme All Your Lovin’ or La Grange – everybody dances and singalong. Sequin fancy jackets, hats and especially along the beards are all there. Very good performance.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD and their legendary southern rock delighted fans. A real pleasure for me to listen for the first time Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird live.
KISS – makeup, wigs, platform boots, glitter outfits and guitars, the Gene Simmons tongue, everything is in place. A spectacular show with lasers, flying platforms, fireworks, nothing is forgotten. Americans remain loyal to their reputation. And the Kiss Army is pleased with such a show, last of their career or not.

Discoveries
SKALD a great surprise from the French trio that is inspired by Northern mythology. Old instruments, the beautiful singer’s voice, they revive the poetry of former Scalds who sang in their language – old Norse – the history of peoples and the Viking gods. Mixing narrative punctuated and rhythmic songs, a show powerful and captivating that pleased the audience.
DEMOND AND WIZARDS – the band formed of the American guitarist Jon Schaffer and the German singer Hansi Kürsch, a joint project taking shape in 1997, but which surfaced recently. In the heavy-power metal with symphonic overtones registry.
Very beautiful and totally different concert with the cellist, JO QUAIL, on solo, who replaced MYRKUR Folkensange. A minimalist and original concert, with hybrid tracks combining rock and baroque with innovative looping techniques.
Well, here it is, HELLFEST and its guest Knotfest kept the big promises with 4 fantastic days of varied music, conviviality and good mood. See you next year on 19-20-21 June !
