JUDAS PRIEST brought the FIREPOWER in Paris on 27.01.2019 – Gig Review

Aller aux concerts un dimanche soir, c’est toujours difficile. Et quand le froid et la pluie se donnent rendez-vous, comme dans la soirée du 27 janvier, c’est encore pire. Mais le légendaire groupe britannique Judas Priest nous avait convié au premier concert de leur tournée 2019 et donc voilà une très bonne raison de troquer son nid douillet contre un show qui s’annonçait déjà mémorable.

Après la sortie l’année dernière de leur excellent album Firepower, les dieux du métal nous avait offert une prestation remarquable au Hellfest 2018 et on avait vraiment hâte de les revoir cette fois dans un comité plus restreint, au Zenith de Paris.

La soirée débute avec les français de Disconnected qui sont visiblement très heureux d’ouvrir pour les géants de heavy metal et remercient à la production de leur donner cette opportunité. Tout juste rentrés de leur tournée avec Tremonti, le jeune groupe de Troyes présente leur album White Colossus , du métal moderne très énergique, et se donne à corp et âme sur scène devant un public réchauffé qui commence déjà à pogoter.

Mais la nuit appartient à Rob Halford et à ses acolytes. Sur Intro War Pigs de Black Sabbath, l’immense rideau tombe et les rockers arrivent sur scène. Démarrage avec Firepower et tout de suite on prend plein les yeux. La scène est énorme, l’écran derrière est gigantesque et les lumières sont spectaculaires. Running Wild, Grinder, Sinner, The Ripper, les classiques s’enchainent rapidement et sans répit. Whoau!!!!!

La Voix de Halford est impeccable. Ses envolés aigues et ses hurlements n’ont rien perdu de leur puissance. Gros applaudissements pour sa garde-robe stylée et son élégance heavy metal. Il glisse souvent derrière un rideau pour changer ses tenues très Halford-esques : vestes argentées, manteaux en cuir ou en denim cloutée, des franges en abondance.

Le duo de guitaristes Richie Faulkner et Andy Sneap envoie des torrents des riffs fantastiques qui n’ont rien à envier à ceux des vétérans qu’ils remplacent : K.K. Downing parti en 2011 (des récentes rumeurs affirment qu’il reviendra) et Glenn Tipton, diagnostiqué avec la maladie de Parkinson.

La section rythmique assure. Le membre fondateur Ian Hill en mode head banging reste toujours au fond de la scène comme s’il ne voulait pas quitter le frénétique Scott Travis, le batteur de longue date, pilier du groupe.

Halford se déplace constamment tout au long de la scène, toujours complice avec ses musiciens et avec le public qui chante avec passion sur You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Turbo Lover ou Hell Bent for Leather. Sur cette dernière, le chanteur fait son entrée mythique en moto, casquette en cuir et lunettes de soleil.

Cris diaboliques sur Painkiller où nous avons le droit à quelques extraits vidéos montrant Glenn Tipton, des images superposés sur ceux de la scène, créant un peu l’impression que le guitariste emblématique était là.

Après un très bref départ, ils retournent pour un rappel de 5 morceaux avec notamment Electric Eye, où une armée des robots défile sur l’écran, la cultissime Breaking the Law repris en cœur par toute la salle et enfin Living After Midnight qui fait trembler le Zenith pour une dernière fois.

Les métalleux en cuir et jean sont éblouis et heureux. Judas Priest nous a donné tout ce que nous sommes venus pour. Ils nous ont apporté la certitude définitive qu’ils gardent encore la puissance du feu sacrée et reste bel et bien un de meilleur groupe de la scène heavy metal.

Rob Halford montre une fois de plus qu’il n’a rien perdu de sa superbe (à part ses cheveux).

En tant que fan de longue date, j’ai eu droit à un grand moment de bonheur avec un spectacle phénoménal de bout en bout. Aucun temps mort. Une set list parfaite et généreuse couvrant 4 décennies d’histoire du groupe qui a su satisfaire les fans les plus exigeantes. Pour ma part aucun morceau culte n’a été oublié. Même Killing Machine que Rob Halford présente comme un bon morceau qui n’a pas été jouée depuis 1978.

Un show stupéfiant, 1h40 de métal pur et dur (un peu plus ça n’aurait pas fait du mal).

100% adrénaline. Et ils seront de retour, du moins c’est le message écrit sur l’écran.

Go to a Gig on Sunday evening is always difficult, especially when it’s cold and rainy as last January 27th. But as the legendary British band Judas Priest had invited us to their first concert of the 2019 tour so no excuse but brave the bad weather and go out to see a show already announced memorable.

After the release last year of their excellent album Firepower, the Gods of Metal offered us a remarkable performance at the Hellfest 2018 and we were really looking forward to see them again this time in a smaller committee, at Zenith de Paris.

The evening start with the French band Disconnected who are obviously very happy to open for the heavy metal Giants and thank to the production to give them this huge opportunity. Back recently from their tour with Tremonti, the young band from Troyes perform their album White Colossus, modern energetic metal, gives heart and soul out on stage warming up the audiences who already started pogoing.

But the night belongs to Rob Halford and his acolytes. Short Intro War Pigs of Black Sabbath, the huge curtain falls and the rockers arrive on stage. Start with Firepower and immediately they blown us away. The stage is big, the screen behind is huge and the lights are spectacular. Running Wild, Grinder, Sinner, The Ripper, the classics keep coming one after another and without any pause. Whoau!

The Halford’s voice is simply amazing. His high screams did not lose none of their power. Big applause for his stylish wardrobe and his heavy metal class. He often slips behind a curtain to change his very Halford-esque outfits: silver jackets, leather or denim studded coats, fringes and glitter in abundance.

The duo of guitarists Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap sends torrents of the fantastic riffs that have nothing to envy to those veterans they replaced: K.K. Downing who left the band in 2011 (recent rumours say he’s coming back) and Glenn Tipton, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The rhythmic section is solid. The founding member Ian Hill in mode head banging stay always at the back of the stage as if he did not leave alone the frantic Scott Travis behind his drums, the long-time awesome drummer.

Halford is constantly moving throughout the scene, always partner in crime with his musicians and the audience who sings along with passion on You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Turbo Lover or Hell Bent for Leather. On the latter one, the singer made his mythical entrance on a motorcycle, leather hat and sunglasses.

Devilish screams on Painkiller where on the screen we can see some images of the iconic guitarist Glenn Tipton creating a little confusion as if the guitarist is on stage.

After a very brief departure, they return for an encore of 5 tracks especially Electric Eye, with the army of robots scrolls on the screen, the cult Breaking the Law with huge crowd singalong and finally Living After Midnight which shakes the Zenith for one last time.

Metalheads in leather and jean are dazzled and happy. Judas Priest gave us what we came for and they brought us the statement that they still keep the power of sacred fire and it is still one of best and loudest band of the heavy metal scene. Rob Halford shows once again that he has lost none of his superb (except his hair).

As a long-time fan, I had the privilege to assist to a phenomenal show from start to finish. No dead time. A set-list perfect and generous covering 4 decades of band’s history that was able to satisfy the most demanding fans. For my part no iconic song has been forgotten. Even Killing Machine that Rob Halford qualified as good song that has not been played since 1978. 1 hour and 40 minutes of pure and hard metal 100% adrenaline. And they will be back, at least that’s the message written on the screen.
