Une dose d’énergie et de bonne humeur contre la morosité du mois de Janvier ? Écoutez en boucle Who Do You Trust?, le dixième Album de Papa Roach, sorti le 18 Janvier 2019. En seulement 4 ans, les californiens ont sorti 3 albums, prévue que leur fièvre créative n’est pas prête à descendre et tant mieux pour nous.
Jacoby Shaddix (chant), Tony Palermo (batterie), Jerry Horton (guitare), Tobin Esperance (basse), nous avaient déjà donné un avant-goût prometteur de cet opus en octobre dernier, avec la sortie sur les plateformes digitales de deux nouvelles chansons : Renegade Music et Who Do You Trust?, suivis de très près par le trépidant Not The Only One, titredévoilé en Novembre.
Ce qui frappe dès la première écoute de l’album, c’est la diversité : rock, punk, pop, hip – hop, électro mixés avec beaucoup d’inventivité, des paroles sincères et engagées, des chansons portées surtout par Jacoby Shaddix qui passe sa voix fabuleuse dans tous les registres avec une facilité déconcertante : du flow rappé à celle de crooner sensuel ou du punk furieux.
The Ending, la chanson d’ouverture, synthés et guitares à l’appui, a des allures d’hymne de stade et de Linkin Park, est suivi par Renegate Music, plus brutale et revendicative, avec un refrain électrique, fortement crié, pure énergie. Sans doute mes 2 morceaux préfères.
Des riffs acoustiques et une belle mélodie Rock ‘N’Roll introduisent Not the Only One qui bascule plus loin dans l’énergie accompagnée par un chant électro- rappé. Suit Who do you trust ? dynamique et rythmé. Elevate et Come Around– cassent le rythme et nous ramènent dans la partie la plus atypique de l’album, axée sur des influences pop- électro – hip hop et positive vibes avec des refrains très accrocheurs, assaisonnées quand même par des riffs rugueux.
On retrouve le parfum pop punk de la Côte Ouest avec Feels like home, qui parle d’une relation brisée suivi par la sensibilité de la quasi ballade Problems et la rebelle et poppy Top of the World (qui me fait penser à Imagine Dragons et donc j’imagine une salle bondée ondulant les bras dans l’air).
I Suffer Well est bien un coup de fouet court et efficace avec un son pur punk rageant, tandis qu’avec Maniac on revient vers le côté pop slow sensuel doublé par une couche assez hard. Pour clôturer, Better Than Life est la chanson qui englobe tous les sons que nous avons pu entendre sur l’album. Une de mes favorites aussi.
En conclusion, Who Do You Trust ? est un album intense et diversifié, un beau mélange des sonorités, des guitares puissantes, des synthés enveloppants et surtout de prouesses vocales impressionnantes.
Papa Roach reste un groupe qui ne s’est jamais contenté de s’appuyer sur un seul style, mais qui a toujours su prendre le risque de se réinventer et sortir des sentiers battus. Chose faite avec encore plus d’élégance sur cet album. Est-ce certains seront déçu ? Surement pas moi.
Papa Roach sera en tournée aux USA cet hiver, en UK en avril et ensuite, ils seront présents aux Festivals d’Eté en Europe. En France, on aura l’occasion de les voir au Knotfest à Clisson, le 20 juin 2019.

A dose of energy and good mood un this gloomy January? Go and Listen to Who Do You Trust?, the 10th Album of Papa Roach, released on January 18, 2019. In just 4 years, the Californians have released 3 albums and proved that their creative fever is not ready to go down and so much better for us.
Jacoby Shaddix (vocals), Tony Palermo (drums), Jerry Horton (guitar), Tobin Esperance (bass), gave us a taste of this opus in October already, with the released on digital platforms of two new promising songs: Renegade Music and Who Do You Trust? followed very closely by the hectic Not The Only One, revealed in November.
What is absolutely obvious from the first listen of the album is its diversity: rock, punk, pop, hip – hop, electro mixed with a lot of inventiveness, sincere and committed lyrics and especially the awesome Jacoby Shaddix’s voice covering all registers with ability: from rapping flow to the sensual crooner or to the angry punk.
The Ending, the opening song, supported by lovely synths and guitars has the greatness of a big arena anthem reminding Linkin Park style. It is followed by Renegade Music, more brutal and industrial, with an electrical chorus, strong cries and pure energy. These 2 tracks are definitely my favourites.
Acoustic riffs and a beautiful Rock ‘N’ Roll melody introduce Not the Only One which tipped further into energy accompanied by an electro-rap singing. Follows Who do you trust? dynamic and fun. Elevate and Come Around – break the pace and bring us into, let’s say, the most unusual part of the album with big pop – electro – hip hop influences and positive vibes, very catchy refrains, seasoned by rough guitar riffs.
We find the West Coast punk pop perfume with Feels Like Home, which speaks about a broken relationship, followed by the sensual almost ballad, Problems and the rebel and poppy Top of the World (this one make me think a bit of Imagine Dragons and I imagine a huge crowd waving their arms).
I Suffer Well is a kickass pure punk shot, short and efficient, while with Maniac, we go back toward the pop slow and sensual doubled by a pretty raw layer. To close, Better Than Life is a song which includes all the sounds we could hear on the album. One of my favourites too.
In conclusion, Who do You Trust? is an intense and eclectic album, a nice mix of sounds, powerful guitars, wrapping synths and especially impressive vocal prowess.
Papa Roach is the Band who never choose to rely on a single style, but who always knew how to take the risk of reinventing themselves and go out of the box. And this is what they did on this album. With even more elegance then before. Anybody will be disappointed? Certainly not me.
Papa Roach will be touring USA this winter, UK in April, followed by Summer Festivals in Europe. In France, we will have the opportunity to see them at Knotfest in Clisson, on June 20, 2019.
