Grammy Awards are only one week away. Did you already choose your favourites?
Me, yes.
Nothing More, the rock band of San Antonio, Texasâ nominated in 3 Rock Categories: Best Rock song âGo To War â, Best rock album âThe Stories We Tell Ourselves â, Best rock performance âGo To War â
These guys are totally killing it – talented, passionate, hardworking and adorable. So they deserve it !
Just before their gig in Paris , on 5th of December 2017 (live report here), I had the chance to discuss with Mark Vollelunga (Guitar) and Daniel Oliver (Bass) about their Grammy nominations, their new album, some cool fashion in Europe and much more. Check this out !
Hello, first of all, congratulations for the 3 nominations to Grammy awards. How do you feel?
Marc & Daniel: Thank you
Marc: Ecstatic
Daniel: Very Excited
What do you think? Do you have a chance to win?
Marc: Well, the other bands in our divisions are legends. I do not know what it means, I am just wondering if people wants something different or stay in the same field and then, we had no chance.
But on the other way, just being nominated, it elevates us.
To be considered at the same level as Foo Fighters or Queens of the Stone Age, who are heroes of Rock N Roll, it is cool and we are very honoured to be out there with them.
How about you, you think we stand a chance?
Oh yes, definitely: âThe Story We Tell Ourselvesâ is an amazing album, one of my favourite in 2017. So, tell me more about the album? How did you make this record? And why this title?
Marc: Well, it was a different process that we had with other albums. Now, we had Ben (Anderson), our new drummer for about 2 years. It was the first record when Jonny (Hawkins) did not play a single drum and he had the chance to focus on lyrics and on melodies and not being a singer and a drummer in the same time.
Ben took up the throne and really slays on all drum stuff. He is such a great player and had a great responsibility in recording the album with us and doing also a lot of editing and engineering. I think that really help us to create this album.
We were already in our maturation process to the next step. We all went to a lot of life experience and as you get older, especially that phrase âThe Stories We tell ourselvesâ becomes more real.
In fact, that story you tell yourself is actually missing bits of information and as it is more to that story, and not just what I am telling to myself to get through today or whatever I told to myself years ago to get through to that particular day.
This story we tell to ourselves keep changing, it keeps growing and I think this is where we are at.
Daniel: We started writing the album in January 2016 and Jonny has a family emergency and he could not be around for a couple of weeks of writing.
This is our first time when we write with Ben, like Marc said, and 3 of us just cranking out musical ideas. We explore new things, we did like a new demo a day. And once Jonny was able to come back, he found his place as a singer. Weâre jamming together, he just sang and for the first time, we were able to create a song with vocals and everything instead of having him playing drums first and doing the vocals later.
It is just a different album as a lot of things happen to all of us. I think âThe Story We Tell Ourselvesâ is the perfect reflection of how we are all feeling right now.
What can you tell me about these 6 interludes on the album and these opposite words like (Allone; Together), (End; Begin) Where did this idea come from?
Marc: Some of our favourite records have definitely a lot of instrumentals interludes and it really help the listener to get a break from the powering of the rock music.
That it is one perspective and the other one, all the audio clip came from a philosopher that we all gravitate towards, named Allan Watts. The fact that they are opposite words like you were saying that tides furthering with the truth that I was speaking of. There are always 2 sides, like a duality that there is a story you tell yourself but it could be the same story, completely different told by someone else in the same time. so, I think that as humans, we tend to forget that the other side exist and that the truth is to that side as well.
Do you have a favourite song?
Marc: Mine is probably the last track, Fade in Fade Out. I think it is the one that I am the most proud of, as it is a little more personal and natural, being about my son and my father, and the whole legacy of life and death, the handing off of the torch. A kind of story of a phoenix. My sonâs name is Fenix too. So, it is a kind of crossroads.
Daniel: I hesitate between Funny Little Creatures and Still in Love.
For Funny Little Creatures, we work with a guitarist named Clint Lowery of the band Sevendust. We invited him to be become a member of the band for a few days and he help us to craft that song. That song started with this synthesiser part that Jonny had made and Marc and I tried to played real instruments on it. But the sound was so busy and so technical that we could never go anywhere with it.
And Clint came with the most simple perfect guitar part to go with that the song turned so well that finally this part isnât even in the song anymore. So, this song is really special.
And Still in Love? â I love this song
Daniel: It was one of the few songs that, the way it came it was kind of magical. We were all jamming this one idea and the song was almost over, while Marc just started to play the core progression, and we were all wrote the same song.
Jonny came out with a lot of vocals, melody and chorus on it. For some reasons, the verses we wrote were identical, like the same ideas, the same words. We all had the same thoughts and feelings about it. It is really powerful.
How do you write together?
Marc: We respect each other positions. Most of the guitar ideas are probably coming from me. The melodies are mostly coming from Jonny and drums, too. But at the end for the day, we trust each other and help each other out. We check how we can better work each part of the song, in the best way it would be. One person might be defensive because of something he wrote but we just encourage each other rather then hold and fight each other about things. Like this at the end of the day we will have a better product.
Just to go back in time, why âNothing Moreâ as a band name?
Marc: When we first started, we really had troubles to agree on the name, and we joke about being nothing. It was a joke but I think Jonny had an epiphany. You know it is very important to us, when we go to the shows to see what is on stage and off stage. There is no separation âNothing Moreâ between the stage to the audience, when we love music.
You have a great community of fans and you do all these live acoustic sessions on Facebook and Instagram for them. Do you think that it helps you to bring more people and better know your music?
Marc: Yes, I think so, absolutely. Itâs a good strength to have these sessions, to explore more the acoustic nature of songs and the intimacy that this style can bring.
Doing these acoustics sessions and also radio visits helped us to get better to that sort of things. We definitely want to spend more time doing that and thatâs why we have songs like âJust Say Whenâ on this record.
I am sure that it brings more people and it only make us better.
What did make you to be a musician?
Daniel: For me, it was my older brother. He is a bass and piano player and my dad is also a very accomplished musician as well.
I grew up taking piano lessons. I was always around music but I was never attracted to it till I was 14-15 years old and I saw my older brother playing bass on stage. It was like I heard music for the first time. That gave me goose bumps. I think that if I hear this song now it is probably horrible, as it was a bunch of kids playing, but that blew my mind and changed my life.
Marc: My story is pretty similar. I gravitated toward music maybe when I was like 8 or 9. I started singing and I actually get a part in a local play. It was something where I was good.
Then, I went to high school and I just fell into Rock music, mainly because my older brother played drums and he was very good at that. I wanted to play guitar and my dad bought me an electric guitar.
It was crappy and it sounds awful at the beginning, but I thought it was the best thing in the world and I fell in love with it. In the weekends, I did not want to do anything else just play guitar âŠAnd I met Jonny few years later and here were now, 20 years later.
By the way, how did you meet Jonny?
Marc: I met him in a summer camp. I brought my guitar to that summer camp and I played Metallica songs. He heard someone playing and came into the room. he said that he is a drummer and he had a band and he asked me if I was interested to be in his band. I said no I just want to play other people songs.
I thought about this and I think that 6 month later I call him back and I asked if I can I come over for an audition and I did completely fell in love. I knew that this is what I want to do with my life which is weird for a 14 years old boy, but it worked. This is the only band Iâve been into it.
What is playing in your headphones now?
Marc: I go into the other nominees at Grammy â the Queen of the Stone Age is really very good very inventive; the Foo Fighters is also crazy.
But I general, I go all over the place and at the end of the day, I think that my favourite band is Thrice. Their lyrics are really strong, they always moved me.
Daniel: I really take a break now and I am not listening anything, because weâve been on a road for a couple of months now and there is so much music and people around. I do not want more stimulation.
But I love Biffy Clyro.
You play with In Search of Sun this evening … You toured with them before.
Marc: Yeah, we toured with them 2 years ago for a few shows in UK. They put out a new record which is very good, very strong.
They were already good before but now they grew up, mature and I really love their new songs. I hope that they will keep adding as they deserved to be heard.
They are great people, we had a good time on the road with them. They are really fun.
I met Adam and he told me how much you inspired them and enjoy the tour with you and that you are great guys âŠ
Marc: Thatâs awesome. He is a great dude, so cool.
What can you tell me about your fashion style? Is there something special about it?
Marc: I cut one of my sleeves from my shirts all the time, always the right sleeve. Iâve been doing this for 10 years now. To me is to remind me where I come from.
When we get first time on tour we decided to brand ourselves for every year of touring, as we promised not to give up on each other. But after 3 years of touring and 3 scars, we had enough scars and we did not want any more. Now, we would have been at the 13th or 14th one…
I could also say that Iâve been turned on about all the European fashion. Especially, when we were in Amsterdam and everyone has some cool shirts over here, that we never get to see anywhere.
I remember last time, some years ago, Jonny and I went out shopping and we picked up a lot of cool shirts and other different things; and kind of 6 months after, that fashion arrived in USA.
Itâs cool to be so close of the epicentre and every time we see someone somewhere wearing something cool, now we wonder if this gonna be the next thing to see in US.
How about on stage, what do you wear? Why Jonny is always shirtless and bare feet?
Marc: Jonny was always a shirtless dude. Even off stage he is just more conformable that way.
Our music feels very primal to him and as far as he has no shoes that keeps him grounding.
As for the rest of us, on stage there is no other specific wardrobe. I think, we are trying not to pay too much attention to ourselves and try to be more about music, so we all stick to neutral colours like black, white, brown or grey.
What are the next projects?
Daniel: First, weâll do Rock Nâ Roll cruise, ShipRocked, 5 days into Caribbean. A lot of big bands are playing on it. It will be for sure a lot of fun. Then we flight straight from that to the Grammy in New York City.
Hopefully we will not have sun burn for the ceremonyâŠ
And just after the Grammy, we are starting the headlining tour in Us, then, in April 2018, we hit the road with Papa Roach in the US, for another 6 weeks.
We will be back here in Europe in June for the festivals.
Last question â the spectacular Scorpion Tail, what can you tell me about it?
Daniel: The story started about 3 years ago when we were practicing and Jonny found out a way to make the guitar, the bass, the drums and the vocals go to the computer and then go to this certain plug in, like a programme that allows him to completely manipulate the guitar and the bass and they will make that strange whoh wowh, toc, toc, tocâŠ
His initial idea was to make it like a DJ table, that he manipulates and scratch it like a wireless device that he will move around and make different noises. It sounded really cool what he did.
First time we played on it, it was just wow and we said that we have to do this thing. The problem was that it was like a video game controller, so it wasnât cool.
So, my idea was to build something huge and heavy that he will rustle with. Like every time you hear the guitar and the bass pitch up and down, you will see this guy in the air rustling this giant piece of steal. That was the spirit behind it was our biggest project ever.
The US version is bigger, push Jonny into the air and we will be able to bring it next time here.
It is very dramatic and very dangerous but I had this idea and I had to try it.
Going out from the interview room, I run into Jonny Hawkins, the frontman, ready for the sound check and he told me also how happy and honoured is to be nominated but thinking that probably it will be hard to win especially in front of Chris CornellâŠ
So, Letâs wish them Good Luck and save the date of 17th of June 2018, when they will play on Download Festival at LE PLESSIS-PĂTĂ / BRĂTIGNY-SUR-ORGE, France.

Les Grammy Awards vont se dérouler le 29 Janvier 2018 à New York, USA. Avez-vous choisi vos favoris ? Moi, oui.
Nothing More, le quartet rock de San Antonio, Texas â 3 fois nommĂ©es dans la catĂ©gorie Rock â pour la Meilleure Chanson Rock « Go To War » â Meilleur Album Rock « The Stories We Tell Ourselves » et Meilleure Performance Rock « Go To War »
Marc & Daniel : Merci beaucoup
Marc : Extatique
On a passĂ© Ă lâĂ©tape suivante.
Marc : Le dernier morceau, Fade in Fade Out.
Daniel : Moi, jâhĂ©site entre Funny Little Creatures et Still in Love.
Et Still in Love ?
Dâailleurs, comment tu as rencontrĂ© Jonny ?
Merci beaucoup. Je croise les doigts pour les Grammy.
Marc & Daniel : Merci beaucoup.
