(FR) Soirée détonante aux Etoiles à Paris, le 5 décembre 2017 : Nothing More passait par la capitale pour nous présenter leur superbe album, The Stories We Tell to Ourselves, fraichement nommé aux Grammy Awards.
Découverts que cette année…beh oui, mieux plus tard que jamais… j’attendais avec grand impatience leur prestation live, en sachant qu’en général, ils mettent le feu dès les premières accords…
Plus tôt dans la journée, j’ai également eu la grande opportunité de rencontrer Mark Vollelunga (guitare) et Daniel Oliver (bass) pour une super cool interview et aussi, d’échanger quelques impressions avec le frontman, Jonny Hawkins. J’ai donc appris pas mal de choses sur le groupe et je vous en parlerai bientôt.
Pour l’instant, voilà un p’tit résumé d’un mardi soir chaud bouillant :
2 groupes en ouverture – les très jeunes allemands de Psycho Village et pour mon plus grand plaisir, les excellents In Search of Sun, un autre de mes grands coups de cœur de 2017, venus de l’autre côté de la Manche pour présenter leur nouvel et très bon album, Virgin Mother Funk.
C’est parti avec ambiance rock métal, lumières sombres, head banging à fond- la scène semble un peu trop petite pour les 5 British de In Search of Sun.
Guitares électriques percutantes, voix claire et puissante, la foule est réceptive. Set composé d’un mix de leur deux albums, alternant des morceaux rapides avec des plus calmes.
Mention spéciale pour Say it Like You See it, In The Garden (qui reste décidément ma préférée en live aussi) et la puissante Bad Girl sur laquelle Adam Leader, le chanteur, demande à tout le monde de s’assoir pour rebondir dans un saut final de folie, suivi d’un selfie de rigueur avec le public.
TOP show ! Vivement le prochain concert, espérons un peu plus long cette fois.
La foule est donc déjà bien chauffée quand les premiers accords de Christ Copy Right résonnent, et les Nothing More font leur apparition.
La petite scène est bien remplie avec au milieu, le Scorpion Tail, l’impressionnant drum électronique, doté d’un bras robotique, conçu et fait à la main par Daniel Oliver et qu’on dirait tout droit sorti d’Iron Man ou de Mad Max.
Le front man Jonny Hawkins, torse et pieds nus, comme à son habitude, s’empare avec passion de la scène et tape avec frénésie dans son drum.
Let them Burn enflamme la foule, suivie de Don’t stop, Mr MTV, Ripping Me Apart, Go to War – rock, métal, electro, un mélange hallucinant des sons forts et puissants. On dira que le quartet de San Antonio veut nous mettre chaos et ils n’ont pas du tout l’intention de ralentir le rythme. Véritable explosion d’énergie et adrénaline. Époustouflant.
Riffs énergiques et efficaces, chants d’enfer, les cris de Jonny retentissent hauts et forts. Bête de scène, allure de Tarzan Rocker avec un petit air de Jim Morrison, il saute par tout, s’agite, s’agenouille, monte et tape sur le Scorpion Tail avec une surpuissance primitive, transpirant l’énergie et la passion.
Mark Vollelunga et Daniel Oliver excellents musiciens, l’accompagne au chant également, tandis que Ben Andreson, bien caché au fond de la scène tape fort dans sa batterie. Pas de temps mort.
Les fans en délire chantent à tue-tête, ils connaissent toutes les chansons par cœur, impressionnant. Les musiciens apprécient.
Moment de répit et grande émotion avec la jolie balade Just Say When, interprétée en acoustique par Jonny et Mark, pour repartir du nouveau en tourbillon d’énergie avec Do You Really Wanted?, I’ll be Ok, ou l’incontournable Jenny.
Electrique reprise de First of the Year de Skrillex où Jonny s’empare de la machine, s’improvise en DJ, tire les manettes, mixe les sons, émet de bruits électroniques et puissants, module sa voix. Spectaculaire. Mark et Daniel s’empare aussi de tambours et tout le monde tape fort.
Un show conçu autour de 2 derniers albums quasi à parts égales, dégageant une magnifique énergie et dévotion. Ambiance explosive du début jusqu’à la fin. Belle communion avec le public.
Performance de haut voltage. Décidément un de meilleur concert de l’année.
Si vous les avez ratés, pas de panique, ils seront de retour pour le Download Festival le 17 juin 2018.

December 5, 2017, a fabulous evening at Les Etoiles in Paris: Nothing More hit the French capital to support their amazing album, The Stories We Tell Ourselves, freshly nominated at Grammy Awards for the Best Rock Album.
Discovered this year… hmm, better later than never… I was waiting with great impatience their live performance, knowing that in general, they set the fire at the very first song.
Earlier, in the afternoon, I had the great opportunity to meet Mark Vollelunga (guitar) and Daniel Oliver (bass) and had a super cool chat and also, exchange some impressions with the frontman, Jonny Hawkins. So, I learned a lot of things about the band and I will let you know about all this, in a few days.
For now, here it is a short resumé of this hot boiling Parisian Tuesday…
2 bands in opening – the very young Germans Psycho Village and to my full delight, the excellent In Search of Sun, another one of my 2017 great favourites, came across the Channel to present their new and very good album Virgin Mother Funk.
Metal rock ambience, dark lights, crazy head banging – the stage seems a bit too small for the 5 British of In Search of the Sun. Powerful electric guitars, clear and strong voice. The crowd is receptive.
The Set List composed of a mix of their two albums, alternate speed tracks will calmer ones. Special mention to Say it Like You See it, In The Garden (which is definitely my favourite in live too) and the powerful Bad Girl. A final crowd jump, followed by a selfie with the audience.
TOP show! Hopefully, they’ll be back soon with a bit longer show this time.
Therefore, the crowd is already hot when the first tunes of Christ Copy Right resonate, and Nothing More come up. The stage is almost 100% occupied by the musicians and the instruments. In the middle, the Scorpion Tail, the impressive electronic drum and its robotic arm, that looks straight out of Iron Man or Mad Max, designed and handmade by Daniel Oliver.
The front man, Jonny Hawkins, shirtless and barefoot, his usual outfit, takes the stage with passion and hit hard with frenzy in his drums. Let them Burn is burning out, Don’t stop, Mr Mtv, Ripping Me Apart, Go to War -metal, rock, electro, a mix of amazing sounds strong and powerful.
The crowd is screaming and getting crazy. They know by heart every song. Impressive singing along. Musicians appreciates.
It looks that the quartet of San Antonio has no intention of slow down the pace. Explosion of energy and adrenaline. Stunning. Energetic and effective riffs, brilliant singing, the cries of Jonny sound high and strong. Mid Tarzan Rocker – Mid Jim Morrison, he jumps, stirs, kneels, goes up and down and hit the Scorpion Tail with a primitive force, sweating energy and passion.
Mark Vollelunga and Daniel Oliver excellent musicians, are playing a bass hooked to the Scorpion Tail, while Ben Andreson, hidden in the back of the stage hit hard his drums. No dead time.
Breath take and great emotion with Just Say When, performed acoustically by Jonny and Mark, to burst up again into a whirlwind of energy with Do You Really Wanted?, I’ll be Ok, or the unmissable Jenny.
Burning electrical cover of The First of the Year by Skrillex where Jonny grabs the machine, play the DJ, pulls the levers, mix sounds, modulates his voice. Spectacular.
Mark and Daniel grabs also drums and hits hard in the air.
A set list built around the latest 2 albums, almost in equal parts, emanating huge energy and devotion. Explosive atmosphere from the beginning to the end. Beautiful communion with the audience.
High voltage performance. Definitely, one of the best concert of the year.
If you missed them, don’t worry, they’ll be back for the Download Festival on June 17, 2018.
