A few hours before the Papa Roach’s awesome gig at Olympia in Paris (live report here), I had the great opportunity to sit down and have a chat with the bassist and the song writer of the Californian band, Tobin Esperance. We talked about the band’s ninth album, Crooked Teeth, music, tour, fashion and other stuff. Check out the interview below:
How are you doing? How is Paris, did you had some time to visit?
Tobin : I am Ok, thank you. We arrived yesterday and we were at Eiffel Tower, sat on the grass, have a couple of bottles of wine, bread and cheese. It was real fun to be there with my wife, my daughter with my friends and we just stare to the tower.
That’s great! Tell me, how is it going on the tour till now?
Tobin : Tour has been great. I think this is one of the most memorable tours for us. Because, we remember we’re getting older, and back on time, I think that all the drugs and alcohol just made it hard or just made everything blurry before… So now, everybody is more focused and we all enjoy it.
You guys are together for 20 years now, would say that it is better touring now than when you were younger?
Tobin : It was really fun every time. But I think we enjoy it more now, because we are more aware.

What do you think about your audience? Is different in Europe than in USA?
Tobin : Yes, in Europe, I think audience is a little bit more passionate, people care less about trying to be cool, you know like in LA. There, people talk more, they have conversations or they are on the phone while the band is playing. Here, they just jump out of their skin and join the party.
But there are great shows everywhere we go.

Tell me about your ninth album, Crooked Teeth? What is the newest thing about this album, what changed for you as a band?
Tobin : Crooked teeth is just where we are at right now, as a band. Musically, kind of separating ourselves, try to forge our own path and remind people what we do best. A lot comes from what we use to do early on, and incorporating a little more groove, like hip hop elements.
More raw approach to writing a guitar riff or making a drum groove that make you wanna dance. Also, getting back to like storytelling and not being, so focused on making music that has to fit like some kind of format that get played on the radio. It was an experiment and it grabs us. It feels different but it feels authentic.
Do you have a favourite song?
Tobin : I really love Crooked Teeth, Periscope, None of the above and Sunrise Trailer Park.
Speaking about Periscope, what can you tell me about the collaboration with Skylar Grey.
Tobin : The song was already done when we felt like we need a sexy beautiful female voice. We looked to a bunch of names and we settled on Skylar because I like her style and she is such a cool and talented singer and song writer. She might not have been a super recognizable name, but she is part of huge songs and collaborations with Eminem, Dr Dre or Rihanna. She is really awesome.

How is different writing music now than you before?
Tobin : The way we worked for this record, it was different. Before we used to be like, you know, the band would be jamming in a room, or work on an idea. For instance, with I will come up with an idea, something that I have already written, like a demo, and show it to the band, Jacoby would write lyrics, somebody would come with another idea and we would incorporate it and work on it and then take it to the producer and re-record it.
This time we were like: let’s just show up unprepared, not having and preconceived notions of what anybody should be doing. Let’s just get in the room and talk about how we feel and talk about what is going up right now and just start from scratch.
And we did that with these 2 guys (Nicholas “RAS” Furlong and Collin Brittain), that they never done a rock album before. They are virtually unknow for making this type of music, and we loved this idea. They just fit our vibe and we vibe so quickly that every day, we write a new song.
We were so excited and have so much fun to do it. I think we found a new hint how we like to approach the song writing, fun and refreshing.
What means music for you? What is your biggest influence for you personally?
Tobin : Music, in general to me is my biggest passion.
Just living life every day, when I had to get up and I can put on the music that fits to my mood or to my head space. That’s really inspires me, especially, because generally I never listen to the same thing, it is always different and I love all types of music.
I think that our band Papa Roach share this, that’s why, our music is crossing so many different styles.
Inspirations comes from everyday life, all this shit that we are going through – all the good stuff or all the bad stuff.
I am always searching for inspiration in music and it is crazy now how easy it is with Spotify or You tube, just go and discover. I really recommend it.

What artist would you recommend, like to not miss in a life time?
Tobin : Somebody asked me earlier today in an interview to say 10 random records that come in my head or I can’t live without listening to.
It would be like everything from the well know stuff like Prince and Michael Jackson to Marvin Gaye.
I grew up with Fugazi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Portishead or Jeff Buckley.
For new bands, I like Beartooth. I really like them.
There is always new music and it is exciting. The think that you just hope for a good band to have a longevity. A lot of artists came out with just one song and if they are lucky one record that kind of define them, then you do not hear about them for a while.

Let’s talk a bit about fashion. Do you guys have a ritual, like wearing something special on stage?
Tobin : I think that Papa Roach is definitely known for wearing black. But back in the late 90’s, it was different: we were wearing something like very cheap black clothes, like work wear, you know big and baggy, and now over the time it’s grown into something more like higher fashion.
But you know, it’s expensive.
I still love the black clothes. In Los Angeles where I live, I will buy Daniel Patrick, I love the way how it fits, soft fabrics, you know they would not shrink when you washed them.
Then I spent a lot of money on brands like Rick Owens stuff, but they just get ruined on tour if I wear them on stage. I just put them when I am home when I go out.
That’s all about layers and having the right black on the stage and trying to make it pop a little bit. No need to have colour, we can be just all black and have some pop.

Quelques heures avant le superbe concert de Papa Roach à l’Olympia, Paris, le 13 octobre (live report ici), j’ai eu l’opportunité de discuter avec le bassiste et le compositeur du groupe californien, Tobin Esperance. Nous avons parlé nouvel album –Crooked Teeth, musique, tournée, mode… voilà l’interview :
Comment vas-tu ? Comment est Paris, tu as eu le temps de visiter un peu ?
Tobin : ça va bien, merci. On est très contents d’être à Paris. On est arrivés hier et nous avons été à la Tour Eiffel, avec quelques bouteilles de vin, du pain et du fromage et on s’est assis sur l’herbe. C’était un vrai plaisir d’être là avec ma femme, ma fille, mes amis et admirer la tour.
C’est super ! Comment ça se passe la tournée jusqu’à maintenant ?
Tobin : La tournée a été formidable. Je pense que c’est une des plus mémorables pour nous parce que, nous sommes plus âgés et si nous regardons en arrière, je pense que toutes les drogues et l’alcool a juste rendu les autres tournées un peu plus dures ou juste trop flous…
Alors que maintenant, tout le monde est plus concentré et nous souhaitons tous en profiter.
Vous êtes ensemble depuis 20 ans, et donc tu dirais que c’est mieux de tourner maintenant que quand vous étiez plus jeunes ?
Tobin : C’était vraiment amusant à chaque fois. Mais, je pense qu’on l’apprécie plus maintenant, car nous sommes plus conscients.

Que pense- tu de votre public ? C’est différent en Europe qu’aux USA ?
Tobin : Oui, en Europe, je pense que le public est plus passionné. Les gens se soucient moins d’être cool, comme à Los Angeles. Là-bas, les gens parlent plus, ils ont des conversations ou ils sont sur leur téléphone, alors que le groupe joue.
Ici, ils ont juste envie de se donner à fond, sauter comme des digues, rejoindre le groupe et faire la fête.
Mais il y a de super concerts partout où que nous allons.

Parle-moi un peu de Crooked Teeth, votre neuvième album.
Tobin : Crooked Teeth est juste ce que nous en sommes en ce moment comme groupe. Musicalement, c’est une sorte de nous dépasser nous-mêmes, essayer de forger notre propre chemin et de rappeler aux gens ce que nous faisons le mieux. Beaucoup de choses viennent de ce que nous faisions à nos débuts intégrés avec un peu plus groove, comme des éléments de hip-hop.
Nous avons essayé une approche plus brute pour l’écriture des riffs de guitare ou des beats de batterie, qui donnent envie de danser. Aussi, on voulait revenir vers le story telling et pas tellement de concentrer sur un format de chanson qui s’adapte à la radio. C’était une expérience, c’était différent mais c’était authentique.
Tu as une chanson favorite ?
Tobin : J’aime vraiment Crooked Teeth, Periscope, None of the Above et Sunrise Trailer Park.
Parlant de Periscope que peux-tu me dire sur la collaboration avec Skylar Grey.
Tobin : La chanson était déjà prête lorsque nous avons pensé que nous avons besoin d’une voix féminine, belle et sexy. On a regardé plusieurs noms. Nous nous sommes décidés pour Skylar, parce que j’aime son style et elle est super cool, elle est une excellente chanteuse et compositrice.
Son nom n’est peut-être pas très reconnaissable, mais elle fait partie des chansons et des collaborations énormes avec Eminem, Dr Dre ou Rihanna. Elle est impressionnante.

En quoi votre façon d’écrire est maintenant différente par rapport à ce que vous avez fait avant ?
Tobin : La façon de travailler pour cet album a été différente. Avant, nous avions l’habitude de faire du jamming ensemble dans une pièce…ou par exemple, j’arrivais avec une idée, quelque chose que j’ai déjà écrit, comme une démo, Jacoby écrirait les paroles, quelqu’un viendrait avec une autre idée et nous allons l’intégrer et travailler dessus. Et avec tout, ça on allait au producteur et ré-enregistrer.
Cette fois on s’est dit – nous allons – y en studio non préparés, sans idées préconçues de ce que chacun doit faire.
Nous allons juste se réunir et parler de nos sentiments, de ce qui se passe et tout recommencer à zéro. Et nous l’avons fait qu’avec ces 2 gars (Nicholas “RAS” Furlong and Collin Brittain) qui n’ont jamais fait un album de rock avant. Ils sont pratiquement inconnus pour faire ce type de musique, et nous avons aimé cette idée. Ils se sont adaptés à notre vibe et nous avons tellement aimé que presque chaque jour nous avons écrit une nouvelle chanson.
Je pense que nous avons trouvé une nouvelle voie d’ aborder l’écriture de nouvelles chansons. C’était amusant et rafraîchissant.
Ce que signifie la musique pour toi ? Quelle est ta plus grande inspiration pour toi personnellement ?
Tobin : La musique, en général, pour moi est ma plus grande passion. Le fait que tous les jours, je me levé et je peux écouter la musique qui s’adapte à mon humeur…c’est qui m’inspire vraiment. Surtout, parce que généralement je n’écoute jamais la même chose, c’est toujours différent et j’aime tous les types de musique.
Je pense que notre groupe Papa Roach partage cela, c’est pourquoi, notre musique traverse tant de styles différents.
Inspiration vient aussi de la vie quotidienne, toute cette merde que nous vivons – toutes les bonnes ou mauvaises choses.
Je suis toujours à la recherche d’inspiration dans la musique et c’est fou comme maintenant c’est facile avec Spotify et You Tube, juste allez et découvrez. Je le recommande vraiment.

Quel artiste tu pourras me recommander ? Disons des artists à ne pas manquer dans une vie.
Tobin : Quelqu’un m’a demandé plus tôt aujourd’hui dans une interview de nommer 10 albums aléatoires qui me viennent dans ma tête ou je ne pourrais pas vivre sans les écouter.
Ce qui m’est venu à l’esprit c’était des très connus comme Prince, Michael Jackson ou Marvin Gaye.

Comme nouveau groupes, j’aime beaucoup Beartooth.
Il y a toujours de la nouvelle musique à découvrir et c’est excitant. On espère juste pour un bon group qu’il aura une longévité. Beaucoup d’artistes arrivent avec juste avec une chanson ou un album qui les défini et ensuite vous n’entendez plus parler eux.

Parlons un peu de mode. Avez-vous un rituel, comme porter quelque chose de spécial sur scène ?
Tobin : Je pense que Papa Roach est certainement connu pour porter du noir. Mais disons que cela a évolué avec le temps … à la fin des années 90, c’était différent : nous portions plutôt des vêtements noirs très bon marché, comme de habits de travail, tu sais, très grands et amples et maintenant, on a plutôt évolué vers quelque chose de plus grande qualité, plus fashion. Mais tu sais, c’est cher.
J’aime toujours les vêtements noirs, à Los Angeles où j’habite, je vais acheter la marque Daniel Patrick. J’aime leur coupe et leurs matières qui vont pas rétrécir au lavage.
Puis, j’ai dépensé beaucoup d’argent sur des marques comme Rick Owens, mais j’ai arrêté de les porter sur scène, dans les tournées, car je n’avais pas envie de les détruire. Je les mets juste quand je suis à la maison et je sors.
En fait sur scène, tout est dans les bonnes nuances de noir. Et en même temps essayer d’en faire un peu plus pop sans la couleur. Nous pouvons être juste tout en noir et avoir du peps.
