PAPA ROACH – Gig Live Report – Olympia, Paris -13.10.2017

The tornado Papa Roach passed over Paris, Friday the 13th, and this time the Californians played in the most beautiful and most famous capital venue, Olympia.

Celebrating 20 years since their first album, Old Friend from Young Years, Papa Roach, is by far, one of the most constant and assiduous band in the history of rock and especially one of the best in live.

Alternative nu metal, mixing rock and hip hop, with the unique signing of Jacoby Shaddix, their newest and ninth album, Crooked Teeth, released last April and very much acclaimed, brought them back to their roots. And their loyal fans loved it. So for sure, their gig was more than expected.

Furthermore, just before the show, Tobin Esperance, the bass man, told me that this have been one of the most memorable tour till now (interview coming soon) so I was more then excited to see them on stage.

Opening act the Frenchman Waxx, and his band for his first solo show: lot of energy and enthusiasm. Incendiary guitar riffs, hip hop singing, efficient show that conquered the audience.

Time for Papa Roach to arrive on stage so to drop the curtain with the ‘Crooked Teeth’ cover design on it.

They kick off the gig with their album’s title track, the energetic Crooked Teeth followed by Getting Away with Murder, Between Angels and Insects. It took about 2 seconds to set the audience on fire, “old-school” fans or the younger ones.

Only the scratchy Papa Roach logo on the back and intense strobe lights shooting in every direction accompanied a hallucinating moving on the stage… Jacoby Shaddix (singer) , Tobin Esperance (bass) and Jerry Horton (guitar) keep changing places covering all angles of the stage and heating the crowd. The drummer Tony Palermo hit the drums like crazy.

Shaddix is definitely the ultimate frontman. He perfectly knows how to engage with the crowd and make sure that everyone is feeling well and enjoy the show. He invites the people on the balcony to stand up as this is a rock gig. Everyone must be part of the show.

Brilliant Born For Greatness –Singing, jumping, roaring, bouncing, dancing– the excitement on stage and in the crowd is at its peak. That kind of positive energy that always finds its way into the audience.

She Loves Me not and Scars then Periscope, Gravity and suddenly a surprise cover, Song 2 by Blur, in a very metal version that the crowd utterly appreciated. The Olympia’s floor is seriously trembling.

A emotional highlight of the show, Forever, followed by rendition of In the End by Linkin Park, a heartfelt tribute to Chester Bennington, that commit tragic suicide earlier this year. Touching words from Jacoby, talking about depression that could touched everyone. The song is dedicated to anyone who finds themselves or knows someone walking through that darkness.

American Dreams, Lifeline, followed by Help, the frontman is directing the crowd singing along like an orchestral conductor or instigate a Wall Of Death. The ambience is incredible clapping, tapping feet, singing. It’s a perfect communion between the artists and the crowd. A band who really appreciate and value their fans.

After a short break, the Americans resumed and played an extended Encore: the excellent None of the Above, Dead Cell, Thrown Away, Last Resort, and …To Be Loved.

An exquisite vivacity, energy and passion, they undoubtedly performed one of the best gig in Paris and the audience did not disappoint neither.

La déferlante Papa Roach s’est abattue à nouveau sur Paris, le vendredi 13, et cette fois, les californiens ont fait vibrer la plus belle et la plus fameuse salle de la capitale, l’Olympia.

Célébrant 20 ans depuis leur tout premier album Old Friend from Young Years, Papa Roach, est de loin l’un de groupes les plus constants et assidus dans l’histoire du rock et surtout l’un des meilleurs en live.

Alternative nu métal, mélangeant le rock et le hip hop, avec la signature si particulière du chanteur Jacoby Shaddix, leur nouvel et neuvième album, Crooked Teeth, sorti en avril dernier et beaucoup acclamé par les critique, les a ramenés à leurs racines. Et leurs fidèles fans ont adoré. Donc, évidemment leur concert était plus qu’attendu.

Juste avant le concert Tobin Esperance, le bass man, me disait que cette tournée est l’une de plus mémorable qu’ils ont fait (l’interview bientot) , donc me voila, très impaciente de les voir sur scène.

En ouverture, beaucoup d’énergie et d’enthousiasme pour Waxx et son premier concert solo. Riffs de guitare incendiaire, chant rappé, leur show même très court a conquis le public.

Et voilà que le rideau à effigie de l’album Crooked Teeth (dents tordues), tombe et c’est le temps pour Papa Roach d’arriver sur scène dans une tonnerre de cris et d’applaudissements.

Coup d’envoi avec la chanson-titre de l’album. Hyper énergique, il a fallu environ 2 secondes pour chauffer à fond le public, les fans de la première heure ou les plus jeunes. Getting Away With Murder, Between Angels and Insects suivent.

Seulement le logo de Papa Roach sur l’arrière de la scène et une l’intense lumière stroboscopique projetée dans tous les sens, accompagne un hallucinant mouvement de musiciens sur scène.

Jacobby Shaddix, Tobin Esperance (basse) et Jerry Horton (guitare) bougent , s’agitent sans cesse, couvrant la scène sous tous les angles. Le batteur Tony Palermo tape comme un dingue dans sa batterie. La foule est en délire.

Jacoby Shaddix est le définitivement le frontman suprême. Il sait parfaitement comment s’engager avec la foule et s’assurer que tout le monde se sent bien et profite du spectacle. Il invite les personnes au balcon de se lever, car c’est un concert rock. Tout le monde doit faire partie du spectacle.

Brilliant Born For Greatness : chants, sauts, rougissements…l’excitation sur scène et dans la foule est à son apogée. Cette énergie positive a toujours trouvé sa place dans le public.

She Loves Me Not, Scars, ensuite Periscope et Gravity, un bon mélange d’ancien et du nouveau et tout d’en coup une surprise : la reprise inattendue du Song 2 de Blur, dans une version très « métallique » que la foule apprécie totalement. Le plancher de l’Olympia tremble sérieusement.

Un moment fort et émotionnel avec Forever, suivi par l’interprétation de In the End de Linkin Park, un vibrant hommage à Chester Bennington, qui s’est suicidé tragiquement plus tôt cette année. Discours émouvant de Jacoby sur la dépression qui peut toucher tout le monde. La chanson est dédiée à tous ceux qui se trouvent dans de moments difficiles, ou qui connaissent quelqu’un qui marche dans l’obscurité.

American Dreams, Lifeline, Help, le chanteur dirige la foule comme un chef d’orchestre et demande un Wall Of Death.

L’ambiance est incroyable, c’est une parfaite communion entre les artistes et les spectateurs. Un groupe qui sait vraiment apprécier et valoriser leurs fans.

Après une courte pause, les Américains reviennent pour un rappel électrisant: None of the Above, Dead Cell, Thrown Away, Last Resort, …To Be Loved.

Une exquise vivacité, énergie et passion, Papa Roach ont joué sans aucun doute un de meilleurs concerts à Paris et le public n’a pas déçu non plus.
