What is Gutterdammerung, the mysterious “loudest silent movie on Earth”?
Well, last Friday, I went to see it at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris and here some thoughts and pictures…
It’s a spectacular movie-concert, the merger of a black and white film, inspired by the Hollywood 20s silent cinema, and a rock concert. An original concept created by the talented art director and photographer Swedish- Belgian, Bjorn Tagemose.
It is a modern, beautiful fairy tale, minimalist and stylish (Tagemose works a lot in fashion shows), blackened and dark which brings together an epic casting – the greatest legends of rock and metal ever.
We see appear on the screen, one by one, accompanied by screams and audience ovations: Jessie Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) as Bounty Hunter, Iggy Pop as Fallen Angel, Henry Rollins as Evil Priest, Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) as General, Grace Jones, Slash, Josh Homme, Tom Araya (Slayer), Justice, Volbeat etc
And there is God also, as a ray of light coming out from the clouds and he speaks German… a nod to the opera of Richard Wagner?
As in fact, Gotterdummerung (The twilight of the Gods) is the fourth drama from “The ring of the Nibelung “of the German composer and I am pretty sure that it is not just a coincidence…it is just a tiny difference of spelling…
Well, briefly the story turns around a guitar, the Holy Grail of Evil on Earth, that has been confiscated by God to eradicate sins. And there’s Iggy Pop, the angel punk, who watch Earth and he is desperately bored. So, he decides to resend the guitar on Earth and all the misfortunes with it.
The diabolic Henry Rollins manipulates an innocent girl, played by Olivia Vinall, to find the guitar and deliver it to him. She goes and she meets a lot of bad people on her way.
And there is also, the naughty girl, played by Tuesday Cross, who wants to protect the guitar… But Rock ‘N’ Roll always win …
And with this Good and Evil confrontation, behind the screen, there is the excellent rock band playing live very well-known treasures in the history of rock and metal: Jesse Smith, the charismatic frontman, long hair and leather coat, guitarists Chris Jones and Kevin Armstrong, the beautiful and impressive singer Kovacs, the “Wagnerian” excellent soprano Cathy Van Roy disguised in Priestess or Brent Vanneste, the full of energy singer- guitarist.
From time to time, the musicians come out in front of the screen, like holograms, moving in a well-orchestrated staging. The Background is the black and white, grey shades, shadows and lights, with red spots and smoke creating a dark, somber, almost Hell ambience.
The set list goes from War Pigs and Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath), Ace of Spades (Motörhead), Battery (Metallica) in intro for Raining Blood (Slayer) to The End (The Doors) or Dazed and Confused (Jake Holmes or Led Zeppelin) ending with an explosive Territorial Pissings (Nirvana).
And then, in encore, a tribute to the Lemmy Kilmister with once again an explosive Ace of Spades.
A fabulous show, a crazy immersion in a noisy captivating world which proves once again that Rock & Roll and cinema work stunningly together: that’s GUTTERDAMMERUNG !

Qu’est-ce que c’est Gutterdammerung, le mystérieux « film muet le plus bruyant de la planète » ?
Eh, bien vendredi dernier, je suis allée le voir à l’Elysée Montmartre et voilà quelques impressions et plein de photos.…
C’est un ciné– concert spectaculaire, la fusion d’un film noir et blanc, inspiré du cinéma muet hollywoodien des années 20s, et d’un concert rock, créée par le talentueux directeur artistique et photographe belgo – suédois Bjorn Tagemose.
C’est un conte de fée moderne, beau, épuré, stylé (Tagemose travaille beaucoup dans la mode), noirci et sombre qui réunit un casting épic- les plus grandes légendes du rock et du métal jamais vu.
On voit apparaitre à l’écran, un par un, accompagnés par les cris et les ovations d’un public avisé : Jessie Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) en chasseur de primes, Iggy Pop en ange déchu, Henry Rollins en prêtre maléfique, Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead) en Général, Grace Jones, Slash, Josh Homme, Tom Araya (Slayer), les groupes Justice, Volbeat, etc
Et il y a Dieu aussi, sous forme d’un rayon de lumière qui émerge des nuages et qui parle allemand, un clin d’œil à l’opéra de Richard Wagner donc ?
Car, il faut savoir que Gotterdummerung (Le Crépuscule des dieux) est le quatrième drame « L’Anneau du Nibelung » écrit par le compositeur allemand et je suis quasi sûre que ce n’est pas juste une coïncidence.
Bref, le pitch tourne autour d’une guitare, le Saint Graal du Mal sur terre confisqué par Dieu pour éradiquer les péchés. Mais il y a Iggy Pop, l’ange punk, qui regarde la terre et s’ennuie désespérément. Il décide donc de renvoyer la guitare sur terre et d’ici tous les malheurs.
Et il y a Henry Rollins qui manipule une jeune fille innocente, jouée par Olivia Vinall, pour retrouver la guitare et la lui délivrer. Elle part à sa recherche et rencontre sur sa route de méchants, plein de méchants…et il y a aussi la vilaine fille, jouée par Tuesday Cross, qui veut protéger la guitare…
Et sur ce fond de confrontation du bien et du mal, il y a l’excellent groupe rock qui joue derrière l’écran des fabuleux morceaux du rock : Jesse Smith, le frontman charismatique, cheveu long et manteau en cuir, le guitaristes Chris Jones et Kevin Armstrong, la belle chanteuse Kovacs à la voix magnifique, l’excellente soprano « wagnérienne » Cathy Van Roy déguisée en prêtresse et Brent Vanneste, chanteur-guitariste qui déborde d’énergie.
Des temps en temps, les musiciens font des apparitions devant l’écran, comme des hologrammes, dans une scénographie bien orchestré.
Le spectacle est conçu dans le tons de noir et blanc, ombres et lumières, accompagnés par des spots rouges et de la fumée : un décor sombre, ténébreu, quasi sorti de l’enfer.
La set list passe par War Pigs et Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath), Ace of Spades (Motorhead), Battery (Metallica) en intro pour Raining Blood (Slayer), The End (The Doors) ou Dazed and Confused ( Jake Holmes ou Led Zeppelin) en terminant par une explosive Territoral Pissings (Nirvana).
Et puis, en rappel, un hommage au Lemmy Kilmister avec de nouveau un explosive Ace of Spades.
Un très beau et original concept, une folle immersion dans un univers bruyant, énergétique et captivant qui prouvent encore une fois que le Rock & Roll et le cinéma marchent terriblement bien ensemble.
C’est ça GUTTERDAMMERUNG !
