“There are men and there are Giants” … Banks and Steelz were hitting Europe middle November for only 4 intimate shows to celebrate their debut album “Anything but Words” released on 26th of August 2016.
I spoke earlier this year about this awesome unexpected genius Rock – Rap alliance between Interpol’s Paul Banks and Wu Tang Clan’s RZA and you can imagine that I could not miss them on stage.
Consequently, I packed my luggage for 2 destinations:
Cologne – Gloria Theater and London – XOYO, two intimate cozy night clubs that fitted perfectly to their music.
Well, I would have probably needed “Anything but Words” to describe better their performances …but I tried to do my best with some pictures and wording …
Basically, the 2 shows were similar: darkened stages, warm glowing violet, red or white lights, elegant black suits … a minimalist, personal ambience…with stories, smiles, great complicity and champagne… just my kind of gigs. And honestly, it is not every day, that we can see such big artists so close… it’s almost scary.
Starting with “One by One”, they played 9 from 12 songs of the record plus a great Frank Ocean’s cover, where Banks has totaly blown my mind with his singing.
The set swings between dream and reality, sensuality and higher energy. We dance on “Ana Electronic”, “Giant”, “Love and War” or “SpeedWay Sonora” and we marvel on “Wild Season” or “Can’t hardy feel”…
Banks with his guitar, RZA most of the time behind the keyboards while not bouncing on the tiny stage, popping and spraying a bottle of champagne on “Sword in the Stone” warming up the audience, probably formed by half Banks’ and half Rza’s fans.
Two talented musicians hanging out, so different but so complementary, a solid artistic connection. Charismatics, powerful vocals, a perfect balance and interaction between both artists’ aesthetics.
RZA is all fire & energy, dynamite rapping, while Paul is all emotion & sensibility, mesmerising voice.Their complicity is obvious on stage, each of them play his role in the song, in a permanet musical dialogue. We feel it – this dynamic. It is a challenge.They went out from their comfort zone and wrote a new chapter, a new “celestial sound” of rock, pop, hip hop, alternative, indie…highly seasoned with some 80’s synthe electro new wave beats.
A genuine delight…not just shows, but parties, with all of us as privileged guests moving into shadows and lights.
Fun.Coolness.Emotion.Perfection.

“There are men and there are Giants “…Banks and Steelz ont frappé l’Europe mi – novembre pour seulement 4 shows pour célébrer leur premier album “Anything but Words” sorti le 26 août 2016.
Eh bien, j’ai parlé plus tôt cette année de cette inattendue et géniale alliance Rock – Rap entre Paul Banks d’Interpol et RZA du Wu Tang Clan et évidemment, je ne pouvais pas manquer l’occasion de les voir sur scène, donc, j’ai fait mes valises pour 2 destinations :
Cologne – Gloria Theater et Londres – XOYO, deux clubs de nuit, ambiance intime et cosy, parfaitement adaptés à leur musique.
J’aurais eu probablement besoin autre chose que des mots (Anything but Words) pour décrire les shows…mais, j’ai fait de mon mieux avec quelques photos et paroles…
Pratiquement, les deux lives étaient similaires : décor noir baigné par des lumières rouges-violettes ou de spots blancs, costumes noir élégants… ambiance minimaliste, personnelle… histoires, sourires, champagne et complicité…juste mon type de concerts.
Et puis, ce n’est pas tous les jours, qu’on peut voir des si grands artistes si près – c’est presque effrayant.
Commençant par “One By One”, cette interaction musicale s’étale doucement au-dessous de nos têtes … on s’enchaîne petit à petit à ce son magique.
Ils ont joué 9 de 12 chansons de l’album. Le set oscille entre rêve et réalité, douceur et énergie.
Nous dansons sur “Ana Electronic”, “Giant” “Love and War” ou “Speed Way Sonora” et nous rêvons sur les plus sensuelles comme « Wild Season » or « Can’t Hardly Feel ». Ils ont aussi chanté pour la première fois à Cologne, un cover de Franck Ocean – « Nikes » avec un fantastique chant de Banks.
Banks avec sa guitare, RZA la plupart du temps derrière le clavier quand il ne saute pas sur la scène minuscule ou nous arrose d’ une bouteille de champagne sur « Sword in the Stone » et chauffe rapidement l’audience, probablement formé de fans de Banks et RZA, moitié – moitié…
Deux musiciens si différents mais si complémentaires, une solide connexion artistique. C’est un dialogue musical pérmanent. Un équilibre parfait entre l’esthétique de ces deux artistes. RZA est tout feu & énergie avec son rap dynamite alors que Paul est toute émotion, sensibilité, avec sa voix hypnotisante..
Leur complicité est évidente sur scène, chacun d’entre eux révèlent son rôle dans la chanson, s’exprime dans son propre manière et esthétique. C’est un challenge, ils ont sorti de leur comfort zone, tout en créant un nouveau son céleste : rock, pop, hip hop, alternatif, indie … assaisonné d’un bon 80 ‘s synthe electro new wave beat.
C’est le véritable plaisir… pas seulement un spectacle, mais une party avec nous tous comme des hôtes privilégiés bougeant des ombres et lumières.
Fun. Emotion.Coolitude.Perfection.
