Pixies, the Winning Comeback, live report Zenith Paris, 23.11.2016

End of September 2016, the legendary Pixies came back with a sixth album -“Head carrier”.

Following closely “Indie Cindy” out in 2014, the album that marked the reunification of the quartet from Boston, “Head Carrier” is probably of the best sounds recorded ever.

And fortunately, this time, they did not wait 23 years (as between “Trompe le Monde” and “Indie Cindy”) to relase it …

Everybody knows the iconic band as the precursor of grunge and indie rock that influenced so many artists, especially Nirvana with their famous “Smells Like teen spirit” directly inspired from Pixies, but also bands like Radiohead or Placebo…

Being a fan for a long time, I did not have the opportunity to see them live, so I was looking forward impatiently and with big emotion to find myself face to face with the band of Black Francis (or Frank Black) at Zenith in Paris on November 23, 2016. And I was not disappointed…

Starting the show with the inevitable “Where is my Mind” and finished it on a high note and in a big cloud of smoke with “Into the White”, Frank Black (vocals, guitar), Joey Santiago(guitar), David Lovering(drums) and the new lady bass guitar & vocals, Paz Lenchantin, offered a fantastic journey inside the 30 years of their career.

The same sound : raw and rough, the same stressful voice and same high screams of Francis often doubled by Paz, I’d rather say that the Pixies has not changed so much.

Certainly, the musicians are a bit static, the stage is simple, sober and with clean lights, but the sound is energetic, the songs are short and effective. And the set list is long – very long – 37 tracks- totally amazing for a concert… and if I just quote a few: “Monkey gone to Heaven”, “Nimrod’s son”, “Debaser”, “Wave of Mutilation”, “Hey”, “Caribou”, “Here comes your man” or the new ones “Tenement song”, “La La Love you”, “Head Carrier” or “Classic Masher” … it is clear that almost everything was there.

 

A special mention to Paz, little black dress, red rose pending on her bass, who is doing very well in duo with Frank on “Bel espirit” or singing alone on “All I think about now”.

Definitely, the girls on bass have a long and successful tradition for the Pixies. After Kim Deal and Kim Shattuck, Paz put her own mark and brings an air of freshness.

In front of an enthusiastic audience, all generations included, it looks like the Pixies restarted everything and  in the same way. 

They get back to their good habits and for sure, there is no doubt that they will continue to be a source of inspiration for many more artists in the future.

Fin septembre 2016, le groupe légendaire Pixies était de retour avec un sixième album «Head carrier». En suivant de près « Indie Cindy » sorti en 2014, l’album qui avait marqué la réunification du quatuor du Boston, “Head Carrier” est un des meilleurs sons de leur carrière. Heureusement que cette fois, ils n’ont pas attendu 23 ans pour nous régaler de la bonne musique …( comme a été le cas entre “Trompe le monde” et” Indie Cindy” )

Le groupe emblématique, précurseur du grunge et de l’indie rock a influencé tant d’artistes notamment  Nirvana avec le fameux « Smells Like teen spirit »  ou des groupes comme  Radiohead ou Placebo.

Fan depuis très longtemps, je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de le voir live, donc j’attendais avec impatience et grande émotion de me retrouver nez à nez avec la bande à Black Francis (ou Frank Black) au Zenith de Paris le 23/11/2016 . Et je n’ai pas été déçue….

Démarré en trombe avec l’incontournable « Where is my Mind » et fini en apothéose dans un grand nuage de fumée avec « Into the White » : Frank Black(guitare et chant), Joey Santiago(guitare), David Lovering (batterie) et la nouvelle basisste et chanteuse, Paz Lenchantin, nous ont offert un voyage fantastique à travers leur 30 ans de carrière musicale.

Le même son brut et rugueux, même voix stressante et mêmes cris perchés de Francis, doublé souvent par Paz, les Pixies n’ont pas beaucoup changé. 

Certes, les musiciens sont un peu statiques, le décor est simple, les lumières sobres et épurées, mais le son est énergique, les chansons sont courtes et efficaces. Et la liste est longue – 37 morceaux… incroyable pour un concert…juste citer quelque unes: Monkey gone to Heaven, Nimrod’s son, Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Hey, Caribou, Here comes your man accompagnées évidement par des nouveautés comme Tenement song, La La Love you, Head Carrier ou Classic Masher.

Mention spéciale pour Paz, petite robe noire, et rose rouge accroché à sa basse qui se débrouille très bien en duo avec Frank sur « Bel esprit » ou toute seule sur « All I think about now ». Décidément les filles à la basse ont une longue et belle tradition chez les Pixies. Après Kim Deal et Kim Shattuck, Paz pose son empreinte avec succès et apporte un petit air de fraicheur.

Devant une audience enthousiaste, toute génération confondue, on dirait que les Pixies ont tout recommencé et dans la même manière. Maintenant, qu’ils ont repris leurs bonnes habitudes, ils continueront sans doute d’être une source d’inspiration pour bien plus d’artistes.
