Tout d’abord, Happy New Rocking Year 2024 !

Commençons l’année avec un hommage à David Bowie.  Le musicien, l’auteur-compositeur de génie, l’acteur et le peintre néo-expressionniste aurait eu 77 ans aujourd’hui.

À cette occasion, comme d’habitude, depuis qu’il nous a quitté, plusieurs événements pour le célébrer et plusieurs fabuleux chansons à réécouter.

Dancing in the street – L’inauguration d’une rue à Paris

Aujourd’hui a lieu l’inauguration officielle de la rue David Bowie, dans le 13e arrondissement de Paris (au niveau du 61, avenue Pierre Mendès France) suivi d’une soirée exceptionnelle en hommage à David Bowie qui se déroulera dès 19h dans la salle des fêtes de la Mairie du 13e. Animée par Jérôme Soligny, ami et biographe de l’artiste, avec de nombreux invités et un concert de Clifford Slapper.

Dans la même Mairie du 13, à la Galerie Athéna, une exposition dédiée à l’artiste sera visible jusqu’au 13 Janvier. L’exposition conçue et imaginée par Geoff MacCormack, photographe, et George Underwood, artiste peintre, amis de jeunesse de l’artiste est visible aux horaires d’ouverture de la Mairie : du lundi au vendredi de 8h30 à 17h et le samedi matin de 8h30 à 12h.

La sortie d’un Vinyle

Parlophone Records annonce la sortie, le 20 avril 2024 pour le Record Store Day, d’un vinyle très spécial intitulé Waiting in the Sky (Before the Starman Came to Earth)

L’album de 11 titres est tiré des bandes stéréo 1/4″ des Trident Studios datées du 15 décembre 1971, qui ont été créées pour la tracklist provisoire de ce qui allait devenir l’album THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. 

Le tracklisting de WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) est différent de celui de l’album ZIGGY STARDUST et comprend quatre chansons qui n’ont pas fait partie de l’album final.

Sur la face 1, à la place de STARMAN, l’un des trois derniers morceaux enregistrés pour l’album en février 1972, est ROUND AND ROUND, une reprise de Chuck Berry. Le morceau est finalement sorti en single en face B de DRIVE-IN SATURDAY, le 6 avril 1973.

Initialement, sur la face 1 de l’album, il y avait la version de Bowie de AMSTERDAM de Jacques Brel, qui apparaîtra plus tard en tant que face B de SORROW, le 12 octobre 1973.

La face 2 de la tracklist du 15 décembre 1971 comprend deux favoris de longue date des fans qui ne figurait pas sur le LP, HOLY HOLY et VELVET GOLDMINE. Le premier est un réenregistrement du single de 1971 de The Spiders of David. Encore une fois, cette version du morceau a dû attendre plusieurs années avant de faire surface en tant que face B de DIAMOND DOGS, le 14 juin 1974.

VELVET GOLDMINE est considéré par beaucoup comme un classique perdu de l’ère Ziggy, que Bowie appelle souvent « He’s A Goldmine » ou « She’s A Goldmine » dans ses carnets et ses interviews.

Le morceau a été enregistré pendant les sessions de Ziggy mais n’est sorti que le 26 septembre 1975, aux côtés de CHANGES en soutien à la version rééditée de l’album SPACE ODDITY, qui a culminé à la première place du classement des singles au Royaume-Uni en novembre 1975.

La couverture de WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) présente une photo de David Bowie prise lors d’une des premières sessions de la période Ziggy Stardust par Brian Ward.

Le titre de l’album vient des paroles de STARMAN, qui, avec ROCK ‘N’ROLL SUICIDE et SUFFRAGETTE CITY, n’avaient pas encore été enregistrées lorsque cette variation de l’album a été compilée.

Retour Sur une Magnifique Exposition

A Londres, en mai dernier, j’ai eu l’occasion de visiter la magnifique exposition consacrée à la création par Brian Duffy, de l’emblématique pochette de l’album Aladdin Sane sorti il ya 50 ans : l’extraordinaire portrait de David Bowie et son célèbre d’éclair.

En mettant l’accent sur la séance photo qui nous a donné le portrait « éclair » de Bowie, cette exposition explore le remodelage continu de l’image de Bowie, et son rôle, avec celui de Duffy, dans une réinvention de l’identité sexuelle et de genre.

La professeur Camille Paglia a défini le portrait comme « l’une des images d’art les plus emblématiques et les plus influentes du dernier demi-siècle, reproduite et parodiée dans la publicité, les médias et le divertissement dans le monde entier ». 

À propos du travail de son père, Chris Duffy a déclaré : « L’image de Bowie de mon père est souvent appelée la Joconde de la pop. Il est important de se rappeler qu’il s’agissait du résultat d’un court tournage en studio à l’aide d’une pellicule, qui devait ensuite être envoyée pour un traitement commercial.  « À l’époque, il n’y avait pas d’images numériques instantanées ni de Photoshop. C’est extraordinaire de voir comment cela a duré et a été retravaillé à l’infini. Où que j’aille dans le monde, c’est toujours quelque part sur un T-shirt ».

Et pour la fin, qui mieux que Placebo pour souhaiter Happy Birthday in the Sky, la chanson dédiée à leur idole et grande inspiration, DAVID BOWIE qui nous a quitté le 10 Janvier 2016.

Let’s start the year with a tribute to David Bowie. The genius musician, songwriter, actor and painter would have been 77 years old today.  On this occasion, as usual, since he left us, several events to celebrate him and also, several tracks to listen to again.

Dancing in the street – The inauguration of a street in Paris

Today takes place the official inauguration of the street (rue) David Bowie, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris (at 61, avenue Pierre Mendès France) followed by an exceptional evening in tribute to David Bowie which will take place from 7pm in the village hall of the Town Hall of the 13th. Hosted by Jérôme Soligny, friend and biographer of the artist, with many guests and a concert by Clifford Slapper.

In the same Town Hall of the 13th, at the Athena Gallery, an exhibition dedicated to the artist will be on display until January 13th. The exhibition, conceived and imagined by Geoff MacCormack, photographer, and George Underwood, painter, childhood friends of the artist, can be seen during the opening hours of the Town Hall: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The release of a Vinyl

Parlophone Records announces the release of a very special vinyl on April 20, 2024 for Record Store Day titled Waiting in the Sky (Before the Starman Came to Earth)

The 11-track album is taken from the Trident Studios 1/4” stereo tapes dated 15th December, 1971, which were created for the then provisional tracklisting for what would become THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS album.

The tracklisting for WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) runs differently from the ZIGGY STARDUST album and features four songs that didn’t make the final album.

On Side 1, in the place of ‘STARMAN’, one of the last three tracks recorded for the album in February 1972, is ‘ROUND AND ROUND’, a Chuck Berry cover. The track was finally released on a single as the B-side to ‘DRIVE-IN SATURDAY’ on 6th April, 1973. Initially, closing Side 1 of the album was Bowie’s version of Jacques Brel’s ‘AMSTERDAM’, which would later appear as the B-side of ‘SORROW’ on 12th October, 1973.

Side 2 of the 15th December, 1971 tracklisting features two long-time non-LP fan favourites, ‘HOLY HOLY’ and ‘VELVET GOLDMINE’. The former is a re-recording with The Spiders of David’s 1971 single. Again, this version of the track had to wait several years before surfacing as the B-side of ‘DIAMOND DOGS’ on 14th June, 1974.

‘VELVET GOLDMINE’ is considered by many to be a lost Ziggy era classic, one Bowie often referred to as ‘He’s A Goldmine’ or ‘She’s A Goldmine’ in his notebooks and interviews. The track was recorded during the Ziggy sessions but was not released until 26th September, 1975, alongside ‘CHANGES’ backing the re-released album version of ‘SPACE ODDITY’, which peaked at no. 1 in the U.K. singles chart in November 1975.

The cover of WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) features a photo of David taken at an early Ziggy Stardust period session by Brian Ward, and the two sides of the inner bags are the fronts of the two Trident Studios tape boxes. The album’s title comes from the lyrics of ‘STARMAN’, which, along with ‘ROCK ’N’ ROLL SUICIDE’ and ‘SUFFRAGETTE CITY’, had not yet been recorded when this variation of the album was compiled.

WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer. The half-speed vinyl cut was by engineer John Webber at AIR Studios, London.

Back on a fabulous exhibition

In London, last May, I had the opportunity to visit the magnificent exhibition dedicated to the creation by Brian Duffy of the emblematic cover of the album Aladin Sane released 50 years ago: the extraordinary portrait of David Bowie and his famous lightning bolt.

With a focus on the photo session that gave us Bowie’s ‘lightning bolt’ portrait, this exhibition explores the continuous reshaping of Bowie’s image, and his part, along with Duffy’s, in a reimagining of sexual and gender identity.

Professor Camille Paglia defined the portrait as “one of the most emblematic and influential art images of the past half century, reproduced and parodied in advertising, media and entertainment worldwide”

Of his father’s work, Chris Duffy said, ‘My father’s image of Bowie is often called the Mona Lisa of Pop. It’s important to remember it was the result of a short studio shoot using film, which then had to be sent out for commercial processing.

“There were no instant digital images then or Photoshop. It’s extraordinary how it’s lasted and been endlessly reworked. Wherever I go in the world, it’s always somewhere on a T-shirt”
