La fin de l’année s’approche à grands pas mais avant de vous présenter la traditionnelle liste des « best of 2023 », voilà deux albums géniaux à écouter de toute urgence. Deux styles et deux thématiques différents, deux groupes fabuleux qui méritent toute votre attention ! WITHIN TEMPTATION – Bleed Out et THE STRUTS – Pretty Vicious. Enjoy!

Le 20 octobre 2023, WITHIN TEMPTATION a sorti Bleed Out, son 8ème album studio, sur Force Music Recordings, le propre label du groupe, distribué par Bertus. Comme il sera (attention spoiler !!!) dans ma liste de Best of 2023, je tenais vous en parler plus en détail.

Le processus de création de cet album a été en quelques sorte adapté au monde actuel, car le groupe a choisi de présenter la moitié de morceaux espacés, un par un, à partir de 2020, quand le monde était en pleine la pandémie. Chaque single a été accompagné à par une vidéo et des messages forts sur l’humanité et les droits de l’homme, la guerre et ses victimes ou les oppressés dans notre société.

Si sur l’album précédent Resist, le groupe néerlandais s’était aventurés sur de territoires plus pop et électro, Bleed Out prend un virage plus agressif, très heavy metal, tout en conservant l’empreinte métal symphonique si distinctive du sextette.

Les riffs djent sont plus lourds et percutants, les mélodies planantes sont plus fortes et magnétiques. Les paroles sont poignantes et directement inspirés d’événements actuels tels que le meurtre de Mahsa Amini en Iran ou de la guerre en Ukraine, le groupe exprimant ouvertement sa position et célébrant à sa manière ceux qui résistent et ceux qui se dressent contre l’injustice. Bleed Out porte un message sérieux, important et profond.

Le tempo et la thématique est donné dès le début avec un titre évocateur, We Go To War. Des cloches, des énormes riffs lourds, la double grosse caisse, des éléments symphoniques et ceux électro industrielle, les chœurs ténébreux et le refrain grandiose : on est tout de suite saisi par l’urgence de ce morceau.

La chanson titre, Bleed Out, un hymne sombre et écrasant est un cri pour la liberté et évoque le sort de celles qui se battent pour leurs droits en Iran. Wireless est un morceau sur la guerre, plus aérien dans lequel des cordes et de l’électronique s’entremêlent et la voix époustouflante monte en flèche.

L’élément principal ou plutôt le cœur de l’album est évidement la voix absolument incroyable de Sharon Den Adel, plus forte, plus claire et plus déterminée que jamais. Que ça soit façon soprano dramatique ou touchante, douce et émotionnelle, le message qu’elle transmet est sincère et poignant.

Parmi mes autres préférés de l’album, Don’t Pray For Me qui aborde les questions complexes liées aux droits des femmes à choisir, Worth Dying For avec ses cordes et ses synthés tourbillonnantscouronnées par un solo de guitare flamboyant et les envolés stupéfiantes de Sharon den Adel ou Cyanide Love forte et effrayante avec sa guitare lourde et son chant obsédant.

Rituals a un côté une peu pop etc’est une chanson sur la séduction et l’émancipation inspirée du film de 1996 From Dusk Til Dawn (Une nuit en enfer) écrit par Quentin Tarantino et sa tournure vampirique inattendue. La vidéo impressionnante, où une femme récupère le pouvoir dans un cadre dominé par les hommes, réalisée avec l’aide d’une nouvelle technologie d’intelligence artificielle, est une véritable prise de position et dénonce “le comportement des prédateurs sexuels masculins sur le lieu de travail, dans la rue, sur les terrains de sport”.

Bleed Out est peut-être mon album préféré de Within Temption à ce jour : massif et cinématographique, accrocheur et énergique, débordant de mélodies magistrales et de gros riffs bien costaux. A quoi on rajoute une rythmique implacable, des éléments électroniques et orchestrale incrustés avec beaucoup de maestria et une thématique qui donne à réfléchir.

Bleed Out est une collection d’hymnes exceptionnelles à la fois musicalement et émotionnellement. Un véritable reflet de notre époque. Un album incontournable !

On ne vous présente plus THE STRUTS ici. On vous a parlé de chaque album, de chaque concert. Donc, évidement la sortie d’un nouvel album est un grand évènement et je n’allais pas manquer l’occasion de vous en parler plus en détails.

Pretty Vicious, leur quatrième album est sorti le 3 novembre 2023 via Big Machine/John Varvatos, album produit par THE STRUTS aux côtés de Julian Raymond (Freddie Mercury, CHEAP TRICK).

Eh bien, il est donc comment ce nouveau cru ?  Autant enlever le suspense dès le début. Il est délicieusement bon. Un sans-faute. 100% Rock N’Roll vibes ! Et voilà pourquoi.

Le quatuor britannique charismatique, digne héritier de The Rolling Stones et de Queen, formé par le frontman Luke Spiller, le guitariste Adam Slack, le bassiste Jed Elliott et le batteur Gethin Davies a fait sensation dès leur premier single Could’ve Been Me sorti en 2013 et surtout, dès leurs premières apparitions sur scène, livrant des performances ultra énergiques et flamboyantes.

Depuis, le groupe de Derby n’a pas arrêté de se façonner une réputation live implacable. Et c’est justement ce qu’ils ont voulu faire pour ce nouvel album : capter cette énergie rock glam débridé et débordante qu’ils délivrent sur scène dans des chansons extraordinaires.

Il nous reste donc qu’enfiler les tenues glam rock à paillettes, les plateformes et les boas et danser toute la nuit sur Pretty Vicious.

L’album démarre très fort avec Too Good At Raising Hell, brut, énergique et dansant, une dose d’adrénaline de rock classique, parfait pour faire la fête. Le refrain va nous rester dans la tête pour longtemps. La vidéo qui l’accompagne dit beaucoup sur le sujet de cette chanson : la fête excessive et les conséquences d’un style de vie rock n’roll insouciant et extravagant.

La chanson Pretty Vicious est plus lente, sombre et sophistiqué. La mélodie addictive, la voix sexy et puissante de Spiller et le solo exécuté à merveille par Slack sont à tomber.

I Won’t Run est un tube catchy, parfaitement calibré pour devenir un hit radio qui va nous hanter pour longtemps et offre de nouveaux un merveilleux solo. Hands On Me est une chanson d’amour séduisante avec une belle orchestrations sur la difficulté d’abandonner les relations, émotionnellement et physiquement.

Do What You Want nous plonge dans le rock légendaire de 70s façon Rolling Stones. Rockstar est incroyablement dynamique, avec un chant massif, des rythmiques fracassantes et de guitares brulantes.

Remember The Name, la chanson qui a donné le nom a leur tournée continue dans la même veine, un solo sublime à l’appui.

Bad Decisions est une ballade vulnérable fantastique, une sorte de mea culpa, un moment d’émotion et des remords sincères sur style de vie rock’n’roll « How many times are vices gonna read my mind? How many dreams can I burn ’til I’m out of time? /Feel like I’m barely holding on/Lack of sleep from what I’ve done/Hotel bathrooms filled with smoke/I wrote this down to help me cope “ chante Spiller.

Gimmie Some Blood est glamour, terriblement accrocheur, le parfait hymne rock de stades, avec le refrain repris en chœur et les bras en l’air. Le morceau démarre doucement avant de devenir plus fort, explosant au fur et à mesure que le refrain dévastateur arrive. J’adooore !

L’album se termine par une superbe ballade mélancolique piano – voix, Somebody Someday, qui montre les qualités vocales impressionnante de Luke Spiller. Le type de morceau qu’on visualise bien aussi dans les concerts : lumières éteintes et torches de téléphones allumés.

Après une décennie de sorties musicales et de tournées à un rythme effréné, The Struts démontre avec style et envergure leurs prouesses musicales à travers onze morceaux glorieux et addictifs aux refrains entraînants, guitares grimpantes et rythmiques percutantes.

Un album vibrant, parfait pour s’évader de ce monde terne et morose pour atterrir dans l’univers Rock N’Roll glamour et flamboyant des Struts. Ça donne envie de bouger et de faire la fête.

The Struts nous livre la magie du Rock N’Roll triomphant et éternel qui nous fait tourner la tête. Une bonne nouvelle pour le Rock et pour The Struts qui sont dans la bonne voie pour accomplir des grandes choses.

Pretty Vicious est un énorme disque à écouter en boucle.  Un coup de maitre !

Pour l’instant, The Struts sont en tournée aux USA mais on les attend avec grande impatience de nouveaux en France !

The end of the year is approaching. Before presenting you the traditional list of best of 2023, I wanted to introduce you to two new 2 albums. Two new fabulous albums, two completely different styles and themes, two amazing bands that deserve your full attention! WITHIN TEMPTATION – Bleed Out and THE STRUTS – Pretty Vicious. Enjoy!

On October 20, 2023, WITHIN TEMPTATION released Bleed Out, their 8th studio album, on Force Music Recordings, the band’s own label, distributed by Bertus. As it will be (spoiler alert!!) in my Best Of 2023 list, I wanted to tell you about it in more detail.

The creating process of this album was somehow adapted to today’s world, as the band chose to feature half of the tracks spaced out, one by one, starting in 2020, when the world was in the middle of the pandemic. Each single was accompanied by a video and strong message about humanity and human rights, war and its victims or the oppressed ones in our society.

If on the previous album Resist, the Dutch band had ventured into more pop and electro territories, Bleed Out takes a more aggressive turn, very heavy metal, while keeping the symphonic metal imprint so distinctive of the sextet.

The djent riffs are heavier and more percussive, the soaring melodies are stronger and magnetic. The lyrics are poignant and directly inspired by current events such as the murder of Mahsa Amini in Iran or the war in Ukraine, with the band openly expressing their position and celebrating in their own way those who resist and those who stand up against injustice.

Bleed Out carries a serious, important and profound message. The tempo and the theme are set from the beginning with an evocative title, We Go To War. Bells, huge heavy riffs, double drums, symphonic and electro industrial elements, dark choirs and the grandiose chorus: we are immediately seized by the urgency of this song.

The title track, Bleed Out, a dark and crushing anthem, is a cry for freedom and evokes the plight of those fighting for their rights in Iran. Wireless is an airier track about war in which strings and electronics intertwine and the breathtaking vocals soar.

The main element or better the heart of the album is obviously the absolutely incredible voice of Sharon Den Adel, stronger, clearer and more determined than ever. Whether it’s a dramatic soprano or a touching, gentle and emotional style, the message she conveys is sincere and poignant.

Among my other favourites from the album, Don’t Pray For Me which tackles the complex issues related to women’s rights to choose, Worth Dying For with its swirling strings and synths crowned by a flamboyant guitar solo and the stunning voice of Sharon den Adel or Cyanide Love loud and scary with its heavy guitar and haunting vocals.

Rituals has a bit of a pop feel to it and it’s a song about seduction and emancipation inspired by the 1996 film From Dusk Til Dawn written by Quentin Tarantino and its unexpected vampiric twist. The impressive video, where a woman reclaims power in a male-dominated setting, made with the help of new artificial intelligence technology, is a real statement and denounces “the behaviour of male sexual predators in the workplace, on the street, on sports fields”.

Bleed Out is probably my favorite Within Temption’s album of all times : massive and cinematic, catchy and energetic, brimming with masterful melodies and big, beefy riffs. To which we add a relentless rhythmic, electronic and orchestral elements embedded with a lot of mastery and a theme that makes us  think.

Bleed Out is a collection of outstanding anthems both musically and emotionally. A true reflection of our times. A must-have album!

We don’t need to introduce THE STRUTS here anymore. We’ve told you about every album, every concert. So, obviously, the release of a new record is a big event and I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to tell you more about it.

Pretty Vicious, their fourth album was released on November 3, 2023 via Big Machine/John Varvatos, an album produced by THE STRUTS alongside Julian Raymond (Freddie Mercury, CHEAP TRICK). Well, so how is?  You might as well take away the suspense from the beginning. It’s deliciously good. A flawless performance. 100% Rock N’ Roll vibes! And here’s why.

The charismatic British quartet, worthy heir to The Rolling Stones and Queen, formed by frontman Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott and drummer Gethin Davies caused a sensation from their first single Could’ve Been Me released in 2013 and above all, from their first appearances on stage, delivering ultra-energetic and flamboyant performances.

Since then, the Derby band has continued to build a relentless live reputation. And that’s exactly what they wanted to do for this new album: to capture this unbridled and overflowing glam rock energy that they deliver on stage, into extraordinary songs. 

So, all we have to do is put on the sequined glam rock outfits, platforms and boas and dance the night away on Pretty Vicious.

The album starts off very strong with Too Good At Raising Hell, raw, energetic and danceable, a dose of classic rock adrenaline, perfect for partying. The chorus will stay in our heads for a long time. The accompanying video says a lot about what this song is about: excessive partying and the consequences of a carefree and extravagant rock n’ roll lifestyle. 

The song Pretty Vicious is slower, darker, and more sophisticated. The addictive melody, Spiller’s sexy and powerful vocals, and Slack’s wonderfully executed solo are to die for.

I Won’t Run is a catchy hit, perfectly calibrated to become a radio hit that will haunt us for a long time. Hands On Me is a seductive love song with beautiful orchestrations about how difficult it is to let go of relationships, emotionally and physically.

Do What You Want immerses us in the legendary rock of the 70s, Rolling Stones style. Rockstar is incredibly dynamic, with massive vocals, smashing rhythms and scorching guitars. Remember The Name, the song that gave the name to their tour, continues in the same vein, with a sublime solo to back it up.

Bad Decisions is a fantastical vulnerable ballad, a kind of mea culpa, a moment of emotion and genuine remorse about the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle “How many times are vices gonna read my mind? Gimmie Some Blood is glamorous, terribly catchy, the perfect stadium rock anthem, with the chorus taken up in chorus and arms in the air. The track starts off soft before getting louder, exploding as the devastating chorus arrives. I loooove it! 

The album ends with a superb melancholic piano-vocal ballad, Somebody Someday, which shows off Luke Spiller’s impressive vocal qualities. The type of song that you can also visualize well in concerts: lights off and phone torches on.

After a decade of releasing music and touring at a frantic pace, The Struts demonstrate their musical prowess with style and scope through eleven glorious and addictive tracks with catchy choruses, climbing guitars and hard-hitting rhythms.

A vibrant album, perfect to escape from this dull and gloomy world to land in the glamorous and flamboyant Rock N’ Roll universe. It makes you want to move and party.  The Struts deliver the magic of triumphant and eternal Rock N’ Roll that makes our heads spin. Good news for Rock and The Struts who are on the right track to accomplish great things.

Pretty Vicious is a huge record to listen to over and over again. A masterpice!

For now, The Struts are on tour in the USA but we are looking forward to them again in France!
