AVATAR – Fascinating Theatrical Metal Show in Paris – Olympia 10.03.2023

Le 10 mars 2023, AVATAR posait enfin ses valises à l’Olympia, Paris, pour le premier de ses 3 concerts français joués à guichets fermés. Reporté d’une année, ce concert devrait initialement faire partie de la tournée consacrée à l’album Hunter Gathered sorti en 2020, mais comme le quintette a sorti un nouvel opus, le 9^ème, le 17 février 2023, la tournée à pris finalement le nom de Devil Dance Dance Tour.

Cinq ans (si on ne compte pas HELLFEST 2022) que le fabuleux Metal Circus des suédois n’avait pas diverti les fans français, donc évidement, quelques heures avant le concert l‘excitation était à son maximum dans la file d’attente devant l’Olympia.

Grande émotion aussi en backstage où j’ai eu la chance de m’entretenir avec une partie du groupe, tous très honorés et impatients de se produire dans la mythique salle parisienne devant un public qu’ils considèrent comme un de leur meilleurs au monde.

A la fois dans l’approche esthétique que musicale, AVATAR est quelque chose d’unique, d’atypique et d’absolument original. Pas seulement leur musique est un mélange intelligent de plusieurs styles de rock métal mais aussi leur présence scénique est impressionnante. Un peu cirque, un peu de théâtre, un peu de fantasy, un concert AVATAR ressemble à un cabaret heavy métal fantasque avec de costumes flamboyants et des chorégraphies soignées et surprenantes.

Voilà donc le récit de cette soirée qu’on attendait forcement … endiablée !

Après la discussion très sympathique avec John Alfredsson et Henrik Sandelin en backstage (que vous allez découvrir bientôt), je me dépêche donc d’entrer dans la salle pour ne pas rater les shows de 2 premiers groupes de la soirée KASSOGTHA et VEIL OF MAYA

Pour une fois, je n’ai pas fait mes devoirs et donc, je n’ai aucune idée de ce que les deux groupes proposent comme style de métal. Surprise, surprise !!

Le style de KASSOGTHA se trouve quelque part entre metalcore et death métal prog. Le groupe est très dynamique sur scène avec une frontwoman visiblement très heureuse de jouer à l’Olympia. Débordante d’énergie, elle arpente la scène sans arrêt et le reste du groupe (deux guitaristes, un bassiste, un batteur) se donne à fond pour chauffer la salle : des headbanging, des solos, des nombreux changements de places sur scène.

Les riffs et les rythmiques sont brutales, les chants de Stephany Hugnin alternent entre le growl puissant et le chant mélodique. Le groupe suisse (la chanteuse s’adresse au public en français) délivre une prestation énergique mais qui ne m’enchante pas. La salle n’est pas encore pleine. Le public est réceptif, mais ne bouge pas trop et applaudi gentiment entre les chansons.

Le groupe suivant, VEIL OF MAYA, est originaire de Barrington, Illinois et évolue dans le deathcore, le metalcore et le djent avec de passages groovy.

Là encore une fois, une cavalcade de rhythmiques lourdes et menaçants. Des riffs techniques et rapides cognent fortement nos oreilles, alors que le chanteur Lucas Magyar alternent les grognements / hurlements et les chants clairs.

Je trouve que ça manque de musicalité et l’ensemble instruments voix est assez incohérent. En plus, super galère pour prendre des photos, car la scène est complétement dans la pénombre, au moins lors de 3 premiers chansons.

Are you still alive? Le chanteur essaie encourager la foule mais ça ne marche pas trop. Le public applaudi mais reste plutôt calme et se contente de bouger la tête. Il y a beaucoup plus enthousiasme à la question Are you ready for Avatar ? La réponse est évidemment une énorme acclamation. C’est clair que tout le monde économise ses forces pour les Maitres de la soirée.

Quand c’est enfin l’heure pour d’AVATAR d’entrer en scène, on sent que la salle est plus que prête. Les lumières s’éteignent sous les fortes acclamations de la foule. Des sons de cloches retentissent, la fumée envahi la scène et le batteur John Alfredsson apparaît à la batterie. Eclairé par plusieurs spots, il joue les premiers rythmes de Dance Devil Dance, d’une manière très robotique et mécanique, tel un automate de la fête foraine.

Dans le brouillard, le reste du groupe émerge de ce qui ressemble à des cabines de photomaton perchés sur la plate-forme d’éclairage et se tiennent comme des marionnettes en attendant que le maître de cérémonie, Johannes Eckerström, alias The Clown, fasse sa grande entrée.

Sous des acclamations torrides, DANCE DEVIL DANCE explose et le chanteur arrive et marche vers le micro, fait de pauses, dirige avec sa canne surmontée d’un crâne argenté, jette des regards effrayants et tire la langue vers la foule.

« Step inside the circle, jump and turn around » est tout le monde répond à cette invitation d‘entrer dans le cercle avec des rugissements et des bras en l’air. Visiblement, ce nouveau morceau est destiné à devenir le nouveau favori du public. Une excellente façon de commencer le set.

Des colonnes d’étincelles font leur apparition et les tourbillons de headbaging coordonnés entrent en scène. Le son est massif, les lumières magnifiques et les costumes fantastiques.

Les 5 musiciens portent tous des tuniques en cuir et satin rouge et noir, des gilets en satin rouge noir ou jaune noir et de pantalons noirs. Johannes Eckerström arbore la tunique la plus impressionnante, un chapeau noir en feutre et des superbes jambières laces. Son maquillage clownesque est sinistre et drôle à la fois, alors que les autres membres du groupe ont des smokey eyes.

L’hymne rebondissant The Eagle has landed est accueilli avec un énorme enthousiasme. Les guitares jumelles de Jonas ‘Kungen’ Jarlsby et de Tim Öhrstrom s’unissent dans des riffs brûlants, le rythme est puissant, la voix est parfaite et diabolique. Le frontman patrouille sur scène, s’appuie sur sa canne et observe la foule avec attention. Sourire espiègle, il semble content de voir que le refrain est repris en chœur par la foule en délire. Les bras bougent dans l’air dans le rythme et les slams commencent à se succéder. L’ambiance est hyper chaude et y restera jusqu’à la fin du concert.

Les grondements de VALLEY OF DISEASE extrait du nouvel album claquent, Johannes apparait habillé d’un long manteau. La lumière rouge envahi la scène. C’est une chanson sombre, plus destructrice. Les riffs sont très rapides, la basse grogne et la batterie est percutante. Voix démonique, regard maniaque, poses monumentales, chanteur semble venir d’un autre monde. Impressionnant. Les rugissements de la foule continuent.

Je dois apporter mon appareil photo au vestiaire, je rate donc les deux prochains morceaux dont Chimp my Mosh l’une de mes favoris du dernier album.

Je gagne ma place au balcon pile pour ne pas rater l’intro – le duo des guitares obsédantes du chef d’œuvre, BLOODY ANGEL, toujours un grand favori de la foule qui éclate de bonheur dès les premiers accords. Tout le monde se joint au groupe pour chanter le refrain avec grand enthousiasme. Johannes défile sur scène, ravi de nous montrer sa magnifique gamme vocale diversifié et tout le monde se donne avec joie aux headbanging façon moulin à vent.

Suit le sauvage FOR THE SWARM suivi de PUPPET SHOW avec ses rythmes décalés façon fête foraine troublante, alors que Johannes défile sur scène en fredonnant « puppet man ». Il quitte la scène et il surgit soudainement dans l’obscurité au balcon droit qui surplombe la salle.

Éclairé par un projecteur, il agite un ballon orange avec lequel il procède à la fabrication d’un chien ballon sous les cris de la foule. Il l’offre à quelqu’un et il s’empare ensuite d’un trombone et commence à jouer un petit passage avant de retourner sur scène pour terminer le morceau sous des énormes ovations.

When the snow lies red nous transporte dans le monde du cirque car le chanteur apparaitrait comme par miracle d’une petite boîte laissée sur la contremarche de la batterie par un technicien.

AVATAR nous offre un spectacle absolument fascinant ce soir. Un coup de maitre réalisé par un groupe investit à 100% à chaque instant dans un show parfait musicalement et visuellement.

Lorsque le couvercle est soulevé, il flotte miraculeusement à l’aide de quatre ballons, sourire machiavélique sur son visage. Le morceau est magnifique et accompagné par la foule qui scande en rythme Hey ! hey ! les bras en l’air.

Fatigués ? Pas du tout ni sur scène ni dans la salle.

Une suite de Do You feel ?… Do you feel entertained, Paris? Do you feel sexy, Paris? Avant de démarrer le féroce DO YOU FEEL IN CONTROL, un nouvel extrait du nouvel album, suivi d’une nouvelle magnifique bataille de guitares Öhrström et Jarlsby pour Black Waltz.

Un piano est apporté sur scène et Johannes interprétera magnifiquement TOWER, un superbe moment de douceur qui mettra brillamment en valeur sa superbe voix. Si jusqu’à ce stade, il y a eu encore de réticents, là le frontman a mis tout le monde à ses pieds.

L’extraordinaire COLOSSUS nous ramène de nouveau dans de territoires death metal avec le chant agressif, des guitares distordues et le rythme implacable mise en valeur par la basse tonitruante de Henrik Sandelin, lors que John Alfredsson a rejoint ses acolytes devant la scène derrière un petit kit installé rapidement par les techniciens. Tous les cinq sont maintenant parfaitement alignés et coordonnées pour exécuter les headbanging tourbillonnantes.

Le spectacle continue avec Let It Burn dans la même formation. A la fin, le batteur restera seul sur scène pour s’amuser avec un canon à confettis. Il danse et il tire plusieurs fois dans la foule, tout en faisant de pitreries.

Moment théâtral avec Jonas « Kungen » Jarlsby qui arrive sur scène habillé de sa tenue royale, cape et couronne, avant de marteler le riff d’ouverture de la chanson A Statue Of The King accueilli par des grandes acclamations et des applaudissements.

Le groupe reviendra avec l’excellent et dansant THE DIRT IM BURIED IN un autre extrait du nouvel album suivis par Smells Like a Freakshow qui est introduit par Johannes nous expliquant que la nuit a été chaude, il renifle donc son aisselle et simule la nausée. Évidement la foule s’amuse et crie en cœur le titre de la chanson.

Pour conclure avec l’épique et l’adorée HAIL THE APOCALYPSE, le frontman nous demandera de mettre les cornes dans l’air pour une dernière fois, avant de plonger dans les sonorités apocalyptiques de ce morceau. Tout la salle est en délire, chante et saute. Le groupe salue la foule une dernière fois et disparait sous d’énormes ovations.

AVATAR nous offre un spectacle absolument fascinant ce soir. Un coup de maitre réalisé par un groupe investit à 100% à chaque instant dans un show parfait musicalement et visuellement.

Johannes Eckerström excentrique et charismatique, a été évidemment le personnage le plus important ce soir, c’est lui qui mène la danse et dirige l’orchestre.

C’est le show man par excellence, avec de son grand sourire Joker-esque, ses mimiques théâtrales, ses poses et ses chorégraphies et surtout avec sa voix phénoménale agressive ou tendre, qui monte en flèche ou fait une décente en enfer.

Tout au long du concert le chanteur s’adressera à la foule de nombreuse fois avec de mots sincères, de plaisanteries toujours appréciés et surtout pour remercier la foule des maintes fois pour faire de ce 10 concert AVATAR à Paris une soirée époustouflante que restera toujours dans leur mémoire.

Les duo des guitaristes de choc, Tim Öhrström et Jonas Jarlsby sont toujours très complices dans leur batailles des cordes, fournissent un tourbillon de complexité et d’énergie et sont habilement accompagnés par l’excellent bassiste et chanteur, Henrik Sandelin à qui se rajoute la frénésie et l’implacable talent de batteur John Alfredsson.

Du premier morceau, Dance Devil Dance au dernier Hail The Apocalypse, les citoyens d’Avatar country ou les visiteurs curieux ont reçu une salve de 18 morceaux expédiés avec aplomb et grande énergie. Des sonorités extrêmes ou des mélodies contagieuses, chaque spectateur a vécu un voyage musical électrique, émotionnel et hypnotisant. Des slameurs ont défilés, les circles pits et de petits wall of death improvisés se sont enchaînés, les bras en l’air et les chants à tue-tête se sont succédées.

En fosse ou au balcon, tout le monde a vécu un moment d’exception. Une énorme tranche de plaisir !

Après avoir vu AVATAR en concert plusieurs fois maintenant, je peux affirmer que c’est le meilleur concert jusqu’à présent ! Inévitablement, on va les retrouver dans des salles plus grandes, mais j’avoue que je préférerais continuer à les voir dans salles plus intimes, comme l’Olympia ou le Trianon.

Evidemment, je me suis employé plus ou moins bien à vous relater en détail ce concert mais sincèrement, je pense qu’il faut mieux aller voir AVATAR de vos propres yeux pour comprendre. Ils ont promis de revenir bientôt. Donc n’hésitez pas !

Et jusqu’à là, comme Johannes Eckerström nous l’a demandé en fin de show, prenons soin de nous-mêmes et soyons bons les uns avec les autres, parce que ce monde extérieur est moche mais ce soir il n’a vu que de la beauté devant ses yeux !

On March 10, 2023, AVATAR finally landed at Olympia, Paris, for the first of its 3 sold-out concerts in France. Postponed for one year, this concert was initially expected to be part of the tour dedicated to the album Hunter Gathered released in 2020, but as the quintet released a new opus, the 9th, on February 17, 2023, the tour finally took the name Devil Dance Dance tour.

Five years (if we do not count HELLFEST 2022) that the fabulous Metal Circus of the Swedes had not entertained the French fans, so obviously, a few hours before the concert the excitement was at its maximum in the queue in front of the Olympia.

Great emotion also backstage where I had the chance to talk with part of the band, all very honoured and eager to perform in the mythical Parisian venue in front of an audience they consider one of their best in the world.

Both in the aesthetic and in their musical approach, AVATAR is something unique, atypical and absolutely original. Not only is their music a clever mix of several styles of rock metal but also their stage presence is impressive. A little bit of circus, a little of theatre, a little bit of fantasy, an AVATAR concert looks like a whimsical heavy metal cabaret with flamboyant costumes and neat and surprising choreographies.

So, here is the story of this… devilish evening!

After the very nice chat with John Alfredsson et Henrik Sandelin (you will discover interview soon), I hurry up to arrive in the room in time for the 2 first bands of the evening of the KASSOGTHA and VEIL OF MAYA.

This time, I admit, I did not do my homework and I have no idea what the two bands offer as a style of metal. Surprise, surprise!!

KASSOGTHA‘s style is somewhere between metalcore and prog death metal. The band is very dynamic on stage with a frontwoman obviously very happy to play at the Olympia. Overflowing with energy, she walks the stage non-stop and the rest of the band (two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer) gives their all to warm up the room: headbanging, solos, many changes of places on stage.

The riffs and rhythms are brutal, the Stephany Hugnin singing alternate between the powerful growl and the melodic singing. The Swiss group (the singer addresses the audience in French) delivers an energetic performance but that does not enchant me. The room is not full yet. The audience is receptive, but does not move too much and applauds nicely between songs.

The next band, VEIL OF MAYA, hails from Barrington, Illinois and plays in deathcore, metalcore and djent with groovy passages. Once again, a cavalcade of heavy and menacing rhythmics. Technical riffs and fast guitars bang our ears hard, while singer Lucas Magyar alternates grunts / howls and clear vocals. I find that it lacks musicality and the ensemble of voice – instruments is quite incoherent. In addition, great trouble to take pictures, because the stage is completely in the dark, at least during the first 3 songs.

Are you still alive? The singer tries to encourage the crowd but it doesn’t work too well. The audience applauds but remains rather calm and just moves their head. There is much more enthusiasm to the question Are you ready for Avatar? The answer is obviously a huge acclaim. It is clear that everyone saves their strength for the Masters of the evening.

When it’s finally time for AVATAR to enter the stage, we feel that the audience is more than ready. The lights go out to the loud cheers of the crowd. Bells sound, smoke invades the stage and drummer John Alfredsson appears on drums. Illuminated by several spots, he plays the first rhythms of Dance Devil Dance, in a very robotic and mechanical way, like an automaton of the funfair.

In the fog, the rest of the group emerges from what look like photo booths perched on the lighting platform and stand like puppets waiting for the master of ceremonies, Johannes Eckerström, aka The Clown, to make his grand entrance. Under torrid cheers, DANCE DEVIL DANCE explodes and the frontman arrives and walks towards the microphone, pauses, directs with his cane topped with a silver skull, throws frightening glances and sticks his tongue out at the crowd.

“Step inside the circle, jump and turn around” and everyone responds to this invitation to enter the circle with roaring and arms in the air. Obviously, this new track is destined to become the new fans favourite! A great way to start the set.

Columns of sparks appear and coordinated headbaging vortices starts. The sound is massive, the lights beautiful and the costumes fantastic. The 5 musicians all wear red and black leather and satin tunics, and black pants. Johannes Eckerström wears the most impressive tunic, a black felt hat and beautiful laced leggings. Her clownish makeup is sinister and funny at the same time, while the other members of the band wear smokey eyes.

The bouncing anthem The Eagle has landed is greeted with enormous enthusiasm. The twin guitars of Jonas ‘Kungen’ Jarlsby and Tim Öhrstrom unite in scorching riffs, the rhythm is powerful, the voice is perfect and evil. The frontman patrols the stage, leans on his cane and observes the crowd attentively. Mischievous smile, he seems happy to see that the chorus become a huge crowd singalong. The arms move in the air in the rhythm and the slams begin to follow one another. The atmosphere is super-hot and will remain there until the end of the concert.

For the rumblings of VALLEY OF DISEASE out of the new album slam, Johannes appears dressed in a long coat. The red light invades the scene. It’s a dark, destructive song. The riffs are very fast, the bass growls and the drums are punchy. Demonic voice, manic look, monumental poses, singer seems to come from another world. Impressive. The roars of the crowd continue.

I have to bring my camera to the locker room, so I miss the next two tracks including Chimp my Mosh one of my favourites out of the new album.

AVATAR performed an absolutely fascinating show tonight. A masterstroke offered by a band invested 100% at every moment of the show both musically and visually.

I earn my place on the balcony so I don’t miss the intro – the haunting guitar duet of the masterpiece, BLOODY ANGEL, always a big crowd favourite who burst with happiness from the first chords.

Everyone joins the band to sing the chorus with great enthusiasm. Johannes parades on stage, delighted to show us his magnificent diverse vocal range and everyone happily gives execute furious windmill headbanging.

The wild FOR THE SWARM is followed by PUPPET SHOW with its offbeat rhythms like a disturbing funfair, while Johannes parades on stage humming “puppet man”. He leaves the stage and suddenly appears in the darkness on the right balcony overlooking the room.

Illuminated by a spotlight, he waves an orange balloon with which he proceeds to make a balloon dog. He offers it to someone and then he grabs a trombone and starts playing a small passage before returning to the stage to finish the song to huge ovations.

When the snow lies red transports us to the world of the circus because the singer would appear as if by miracle of a small box left on the riser of the drums by a technician. When the lid is lifted, he miraculously floats with the help of four balloons, a Machiavellian smile on his face. The song is beautiful and accompanied by the crowd chanting in rhythm Hey! Hey! arms in the air.

A sequel of several Do You feel?… Do you feel entertained, Paris? Do you feel sexy, Paris? Introduce the fierce DO YOU FEEL IN CONTROL, followed by another magnificent battle of Öhrström and Jarlsby guitars for Black Waltz.

A piano is brought on stage and Johannes will perform beautifully TOWER, a superb moment of sweetness that will brilliantly highlight his superb voice. If until this stage, there was still reluctance, with this song the frontman put everyone at his feet.

The extraordinary COLOSSUS brings us back into death metal territory with aggressive vocals, distorted guitars and the relentless rhythm highlighted by Henrik Sandelin’s thunderous bass, as John Alfredsson joined his acolytes in front of the stage behind a small kit quickly installed by the technicians.

All five are now perfectly aligned and coordinated to execute the swirling headbangs. The show continues with Let It Burn in the same line-up. At the end, the drummer will remain alone on stage to have fun with a confetti cannon. He dances and shoots several times into the crowd.

Theatrical moment with Jonas “Gungen” Jarlsby who arrives on stage dressed in his royal outfit, cape and crown, before hammering the opening riff of the song A Statue Of The King greeted by big cheers and applause.

The band will return with the excellent and danceable THE DIRT IM BURIED IN another single from the new album followed by Smells Like a Freakshow which is introduced by Johannes explaining that the night was hot, so he sniffs his armpit and fakes nausea. Obviously, the crowd is having fun and shouts the title of the song.

To conclude with the epic and beloved HAIL THE APOCALYPSE, the frontman will ask us to put the horns in the air for one last time, before diving into the apocalyptic sounds of this song. The whole room is delirious, singing and jumping. The band greets the crowd one last time and disappears to huge ovations.

Johannes Eckerström eccentric and charismatic, was obviously the most important character tonight, it is he who leads the dance and conducts the orchestra. He is the showman par excellence, with his big Joker-esque smile, his theatrical mimics, his poses and choreographies and especially with his phenomenal aggressive or tender voice, who soars or makes a decent in hell.

Throughout the concert the singer will address the crowd of many times with sincere words, jokes always appreciated and specially to thank the audience many times to make this 10^th concert AVATAR in Paris a breath-taking evening that will always remain in their memory.

The duo of shock guitarists, Tim Öhrström and Jonas Jarlsby are always very complicit in their battle of the strings, provide a whirlwind of complexity and energy and are skilfully accompanied by the excellent bassist and singer, Henrik Sandelin to whom we add the frenzy and the relentless talent of drummer John Alfredsson.

From the first track, Dance Devil Dance to the latest Hail The Apocalypse, the citizens of Avatar country or the curious visitors received a salvo of 18 tracks delivered with aplomb and great energy. From extreme sounds to contagious melodies, each spectator experienced an electric, emotional and mesmerizing musical journey. Slammers paraded, circle-pits and small improvised wall of death followed, arms in the air and singalongs followed one another.

In the pit or on the balcony, everyone experienced an exceptional moment. A huge slice of fun!

After seeing AVATAR live several times now, I can say that this is the best concert so far! Inevitably, we will find them in larger venues, but I admit that I would prefer to continue to see them in more intimate rooms, such as the Olympia or the Trianon.

Obviously, I worked more or less well to tell you in detail this concert but sincerely, I think it is better to go see AVATAR with your own eyes to understand. They promised to come back soon. So don’t hesitate!

And until then, as Johannes Eckerström asked us at the end of the show, let’s take care of ourselves and be good to each other, because this world outside is ugly but tonight he saw nothing but beauty before his eyes!
