On fête la Saint Patrick le 17 Mars mais cette année, de mon côté, je l’ai fêté bien en avance : le 11 février 2023 au Zenith de Paris, en compagnie du mythique groupe de punk celtique americain, DROPKICK MURPHYS.
Je connaissais leur popularité grandissante en France et leur réputation de mettre le feu à chaque fois qu’ils montent sur scène, mais je n’avais pas eu encore l’occasion de les voir en live et j’avais hâte !
Cette année, le groupe de Boston s’est embarqué dans une grande tournée européenne avec 3 dates en France, dont deux au Zenith de Paris, les 10 et 11 février 2023 et une à Nantes, le 12 février. Et sur toutes ces dates, ils ne sont pas venus seuls mais ils ont ramené avec eux pas moins de 3 invitées : PENNYWISE, THE RUMJACKS et JESSE AHERN.
A l’arrivée au Zenith, les concerts n’ont pas encore commencé mais c’est déjà la fête. On a l’impression que la salle parisienne s’est transformé dans un immense pub Irlandais : la couleur verte est omniprésente, les gens discutent bruyamment et les litres de bière coulent à flot.
C’est JESSE AHERN qui ouvre la soirée vers 18h45. Le musicien originaire de Boston également, est seul sur scène avec sa guitare, son harmonica et un ordinateur. Avec sa voix rauque se lance dans des chansons rock – folk – country qui racontent de histoires.
Très proche du public, il communique en permanence, il nous explique chaque morceau et réussit à créer ainsi une jolie ambiance intimiste et chaleureuse.
La salle n’est pas encore pleine mais le public apprécie et répond avec enthousiasme à ses encouragements de chanter avec lui ou taper dans les mains.
C’est le tour de THE RUMJACKS, un groupe Australien de punk-rock, folk celtique de mette de l’ambiance. Accordéons, flutes, guitares, mandolines, les 6 musiciens sont très dynamiques et se donne à fond pour chauffer la salle. L’esprit irlandais est au programme et le public se lance déjà dans des chants et des danses endiablés. Morceaux festives et énergiques, leur musique est assez similaire à celle de DROPKICK MURPHYS.
Le chanteur Mike Rivkees arpente la scène en long et en large quand il ne se sert pas de sa tin whistle (flûte emblématique du folk Irlandais). Belle éclairage et bonne sonorisation, un set efficace et en bonne humeur.
Nouveau changement rapide de décor sur scène et changement radical de style musical avec les californiens de PENNYWISE. Ici on a plutôt le droit au punk rock aux accents hardcore avec des voix hurlés et riffs incendiaires.
Pennywise est un groupe très réputé des 90s et visiblement, il ya beaucoup de fans dans la salle qui pogotent avec grande enthousiasme et commence à former fosses circulaires ou de walls of death à la demande du groupe. L’ambiance est de plus un plus chaude. Les slameurs se succèdent et donnent du fil à retordre aux vigiles. Les morceaux sont super rapides, dommage que le son est assez brouillon. On n’arrive pas à bien distinguer la voix du chanteur et l’éclairage de la scène est plutôt inexistât.
Le set est souvent entrecoupé de longs discours de chanteur Jim Lindberg. Ils interpréteront deux covers Do What You Want (Bad Religion cover) et Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones cover) pas avant de citer et remercier les groupes qui les ont influencés, nous laissant donc le choix pour les covers.
Le très énervé Fuck Authority et l’efficace Bro Hymne concluent le show et Pennywise quitte la scène sous des tonnerres d’applaudissements.
Quand c’est en fin la place à DROPKICK MURPHYS, la salle est archipleine.Dans la fosse les gens sont entassés comme des sardines et il fait très chaud. Sur scène résonne l’obsédant Foggy Dew de Sinead O’Connor et The Chieftains quand les 6 musiciens : Ken Casey (chant), James Lynch (guitare, Matt Kelly(batterie), Tim Brennan (guitare et accordéon), Jeff DaRosa (Mandoline, guitare acoustique et banjo), Kevin Rheault (basse) et Campbell Webster(cornemuse) arrivent sur scène sous des immenses cris et des applaudissements d’un public déjà chaud bouillant.
Démarrage électrique avec The Lonesome Boatmann, tirs de canons à confetti à l’appui. Le public est déchaîné, chante et saute avec grande effervescence. Cornemuse, lumières aveuglantes et The Boys Are Back explose. C’est une véritable marée humaine qui se met à chanter le refrain et danser.
Le son est excellent, et l’éclairage aussi. Un écran géant en fond de scène affiche le logo du groupe en utilisent des couleurs et des effet visuels différentes ou des vidéos. La scène est décorée avec de nombreuses bougies. Il y a une table dressée comme un autel avec croix, roses, cranes et statues de la Vierge Marie, comme un rappel à leur racines irlandaises catholiques.
Ce qui va suivre c’est un déluge des morceaux qui font le délice d’un public heureux et totalement en communion avec le groupe. Je dois vous avouer et je n’ai pas vu souvent un groupe tellement en harmonie avec son public.
Les hymnes classiques énergiques et fédérateurs s’enchainent à un rythme effréné et ne laissent aucun répit au public déchainé : Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya, Middle Finger, The State of Massachusetts ou Workers Song (le groupe invitera Jesse Ahern pour chanter ce morceau avec eux).
Ils interpréteront également des morceaux du dernier album THIS MACHINE STILL KILLS FASCISTS qui est sorti en septembre 2022 : Cadillac, Cadillac, Talking Jukebox et Two 6’s Upside Down qui seront toutes aussi bien accueillies par les fans.
Ken Casey est super sympathique, il monte constamment sur le petite plate – forme devant la scène ou sur les crash barrières, pour serrer des mains, faire de checks et toucher des poings. Sinon, il est constamment en mouvement, il se déplace tout au long de la scène, sautille et chauffe la foule en permanence.
Tim Brennan et Jeff DaRosa s’offrent aussi des bains de foule souvent pour le plus grade bonheur des premiers rangs.
Cornemuse, accordéons, mandoline, banjos et flutes se rajoutent aux guitares, basse et batterie, les musiciens changent d’instruments en permanence et créent une ambiance joyeuse. C’est vraiment la grosse fête dans un énorme pub irlandais à la Saint Patrick.
La foule ne semble pas du tout fatigué malgré le rythme infernal de concert. Même dans les gradins la plupart de gens sont debout et chantent fort.
Ken Casey nous informe que le concert est filmé et que des images serons utilisé pour une vidéo mais comme il reste le lendemain le concert de Nantes, les meilleures images entre ces 2 concerts seront utilisées. Ça donne plus de motivation au public de sauter et chanter encore plus fort. Les “Let’s Go Murphys” retentissent quasiment après chaque morceau.
Pour terminer le set, coup de grâce avec Rose Tatoo et Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced accueilli avec beaucoup d’ardeur par les fans qui chantent en se tenant par les épaules et bougent dans le rythme.
Le groupe reviendra sous des acclamations et des applaudissements enthousiastes pour un rappel très intense avec Dirty Old Town (Ewan MacColl cover), I’m Shipping up to Boston ( la chanson qui fait partie de la BO du Film Les Infiltrés de Martin Scorsese) et en tirant sa révérence avec Boys on the Docks interprété avec Mike Rivkees. Tout le Zenith est debout, chante et bouge dans le rythme. Les applaudissements et des forts rougissements vont mette fin à ce concert impressionnant.
Les lumières se sont allumées mais Ken Cassey est revenu pour distribuer des goodies.
Avec 27 ans de carrière à leur actif, DROPKICK MURPHYS continue à émerveiller leur public, qu’il soit connaisseur ou novice. Des multi-instrumentistes très talentueux, avecleurs mélodies contagieuses, leur rythmiques joyeuses, leur bonne humeur et leur générosité, DROPKICK MURPHYS crée de liens indéfectibles avec la foule et transmet une énergie ultra puissante.
Ils ont le talent de créer une superbe ambiance. On sent l’effort et la passion sans limites du groupe pour tous donner. Et on sent l’amour et le dévouement sincère de la part de leurs fans à chaque moment.
Personne n’est resté impassible. Dans la fosse ou dans les gradins, toute la salle a vibré à l’unisson. Tout le monde a participé activement à cette énorme fête en chantant fortement et en bougent dans le rythme. Il était impossible de rester immobile. Une grande et généreuse célébration de la musique.
C’est clair que la foule est rentrée épuisée, avec des courbatures, des maux de gorge, des voix enrouées mais avec des énormes sourires aux lèvres et de souvenirs inoubliables.
C’était la première fois que je voyais DROPKICK MURPHYS en live et j’ai été impressionné par leur performance, leur énergie et leur volonté de se connecter avec leurs fans. Je le reverrais surement.
Si jamais vous avez la chance d’aller le voir n’hésitez pas ! C’est un must.
Ils sont actuellement en tournée et beaucoup de dates en France ont été annonces pour cet été.
Un nouvel album, Okemah Rising, sortira le 12 Mai 2023.

We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 but this year, on my side, I celebrated it well in advance: on February 11, 2023 at the Zenith in Paris, with the mythical American Celtic punk band, DROPKICK MURPHYS.
I knew their growing popularity in France and the reputation of set the stage on fire every live show, but I hadn’t had the opportunity to see them live yet. Here we are!
This year, the band from Boston embarked on a major European tour with 3 dates in France, including two at the Zenith in Paris, on February 10 and 11, 2023 and one in Nantes, on February 12. And on all these dates, they brought with them no less than 3 guests: PENNYWISE, THE RUMJACKS and JESSE AHERN.
When arriving at Zenith, the concerts have not started yet but it is already the party. We have the impression that the Parisian venue has been transformed into a huge Irish pub: the green colour is everywhere, people chat noisily and litters of beer flow.
It is at JESSE AHERN who opens the evening at 18:45. The Boston-born musician is alone on stage with his guitar, harmonica and a computer. With his raspy voice he performs rock – folk – country songs that tell stories. Very close to the audience, he communicates constantly, he explains each song and create a nice intimate and warm atmosphere. The room is not full yet but the audience appreciates and responds enthusiastically to his encouragement to sing along or clap hands.
It’s the turn of THE RUMJACKS, an Australian punk-rock, Celtic folk band to set the mood. Accordions, flutes, guitars, mandolins, the 6 musicians are very dynamic and give their all to warm up the room. The Irish spirit is on the program and the audience is already singing and dancing heavily. Festive and energetic songs, their music is quite similar to that of DROPKICK MURPHYS.
The Singer Mike Rivkees roams the stage when he’s not using his tin whistle (iconic flute of Irish folk). Beautiful lighting and sound, a great energetic and good mood set.
Another quick change of stage and radical change of music style with the Californians of PENNYWISE. Here we have rather punk rock hardcore style with screamed voices and incendiary guitar riffs. Pennywise is a very famous band of the 90s and obviously, there are many fans in the room who pogos with great enthusiasm and start forming circular pits or walls of death at the request of the band.
The slammers follow one another and give the guards a hard time. The songs are super-fast, too bad that the sound is quite messy. We cannot distinguish the voice of the singer and the lighting of the stage is rather non-existent.
The set is often interrupted by long speeches of singer Jim Lindberg, appreciated by the fans. They will perform two covers Do What You Want (Bad Religion cover) and Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones cover) not before quoting and thanking the bands that influenced them, leaving us the choice for the covers.
The very angry Fuck Authority, and the effective Bro Hymn end the show and Pennywise leaves the stage to thunderous applause.
When It’s finally the time for DROPKICK MURPHYS, the room is fully packed.
On stage resonates the haunting Foggy Dew by Sinead O’Connor and The Chieftains when the 6 musicians: Ken Casey (vocals), James Lynch (guitar, Matt Kelly (drums), Tim Brennan (guitar and accordion), Jeff DaRosa (Mandolin, acoustic guitar and banjo), Kevin Rheault (bass) and Campbell Webster (bagpipes) arrive on stage under huge shouts and applauses from an already hot audience. Electric start with The Lonesome Boatmann with confetti cannon as support. The audience is unleashed, singing and jumping with great effervescence. Bagpipes, blinding lights and The Boys Are Back explodes. It is a real human tide that begins to sing the chorus and dance.
The sound is excellent, and so is the lighting. A giant screen in the background displays the logo of the group using different colours and visual effects or videos. The stage is decorated with many candles. There is an altar-like table with crosses, skulls and statues of the Virgin Mary, a reminder of their Irish Catholic roots.
What will follow is an avalanche of songs that delight a happy audience totally in communion with the band. I must admit that I have not yet seen very often a band so in harmony with its audience.
The energetic and unifying classical anthems follow one another at a frantic pace and leave no respite to the wild audience: Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya, Middle Finger, The State of Massachusetts or Workers Song (the band invite Jesse Ahern to sing this song with them).
They will also perform tracks from the latest album THIS MACHINE STILL KILLS FASCISTS which was released in September 2022: Cadillac, Cadillac, Talking Jukebox and Two 6’s Upside Down which will all be equally well received by fans.
Ken Casey is super friendly, he constantly climbs on the small platform in front of the stage or on the crash barriers, to shake hands, do checks and touch fists. Otherwise, he is moving constantly, it moves throughout the stage, hopping and heating up the crowd all the time.
Tim Brennan and Jeff DaRosa also offer themselves crowd baths often for the happiest grade of the front rows. Bagpipes, accordions, mandolin, banjos and flutes are added to the guitars, bass and drums, the musicians constantly change instruments and create a joyful atmosphere. It’s really the big party in a huge Irish pub!
The crowd does not seem tired at all despite the infernal rhythm of concert. Even in the stands most people are standing and singing loudly.
Ken Casey informs us that the concert is filmed and that images will be used for a video but as there is still the next day the concert in Nantes, the best images between these 2 concerts will be used.
This gives the audience more motivation to jump and sing even louder. The “Let’s Go Murphys” are shout almost after each track.
To end the set, coup de grace with Rose Tatoo and Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced greeted with great ardour by the fans who sing while holding each other by the shoulders and moving in the rhythm.
The band will come back under to cheers and enthusiastic applause for a very intense encore with Dirty Old Town (Ewan MacColl cover), I’m Shipping up to Boston (the song that is part of the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s film The Departed) and bowing out with Boys on the Docks performed together with Mike Rivkees.
The whole Zenith is standing, singing and moving in rhythm. Applause and loud blushing will put an end to this impressive explosive concert. The lights came on, but Ken Cassey came back to hand out goodies.
After 27 years of career under their belt, DROPKICK MURPHYS continues to amaze their audience, whether connoisseur or novice. Very talented multi-instrumentalists, with their contagious melodies, their joyful rhythms, their good humour and their generosity, DROPKICK MURPHYS creates unbreakable bonds with the crowd and transmits an ultra-powerful energy. They have the talent to create a great atmosphere. We feel the boundless effort and passion of the band to give it all. And you can feel the love and sincere dedication from their fans at every moment.
In the pit or in the stands, the whole room vibrated in unison. Everyone actively participated in this huge party by singing loudly and moving in rhythm. It was impossible to stand still. A great and generous music celebration.
It’s clear that the crowd went home exhausted, with aches and pains, sore throats, hoarse voices but with huge smiles on their lips and unforgettable memories.
It was my first Dropkick Murphys concert and was totally impressed by their performance, energy and willingness to connect with their fans. I would for sure go to see them again.
If you ever have the chance to go see him do not hesitate! This is a must. They are currently on tour and many dates in France have been announced for this summer. New album Okemah Rising, will be out on 12th of May 2023.
