A quelques jours de leur trois concerts archi complets en France (Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux), je vous propose une incursion dans le neuvième album du groupe suédois AVATAR, Dance Devil Dance, sorti le 17 février 2022 sur Black Waltz Records (le propre label du groupe), distribution Thirty Tigers.
L’univers d’AVATAR est bien connu pour abolir les frontières, briser les barrières entre groupe de métal, troupe de théâtre et génie du cinéma. Qu’est-ce que les visionnaires du heavy metal Johannes Eckerström (chant), John Alfredsson (batterie), Henrik Sandelin (basse), Jonas Jarlsby (guitare), Tim Öhrström (guitare) peuvent bien nous proposer cette fois ?
Si on regarde la pochette qui représente un Johannes Eckerström en flou artistique noir et blanc, sourire maléfique, regard diabolique, on a comme une prémonition de ce qui va nous attendre : une expérience musicale puissante offerte par l’un des groupes les plus créatifs et fantasques de métal. Voyons donc ce que les suédois ont prévu pour faire danser le démon.
Ça frappe fort dès le début avec la chanson titre, Dance Devil Dance. Les cloches en intro nous plongent rapidement dans les ténèbres : les riffs tranchants, la rythmique musclé, la mélodie catchy et cette voix exceptionelle tantôt claire, tantôt hurlée, voilà hymne parfait pour l’ouverture du bal démonique. Tous ce qu’on aime chez Avatar est là !
Chimp Mosh Pit est agressif et tenebreux mais aussi incroyablement entraînant par son côté funky-rock. Summum de la puissance Avatar. Un autre morceau remarquable qui met en vedette la voix perchée et puissante d’Eckerström et une section rythmique époustouflante.
Étonnant démarrage électro pour Valley of Disease, qui se déverse merveilleusement dans la violence du death metal. On a ici l’un des morceaux le plus agressifs de l’album. Le chant alterne de nouveau entre le growlé dévastateur et le mélodique. Le refrain contagieux est soutenu par des riffs lourds et hurlants et des rythmiques costaux.
Le périple continue dans des territoires totalement inattendus avec On the Beach, cri de mouette à l’appui (pas si surprenant vu le titre du morceau !). Des nombreux excellents changements stylistiques lui confère une coté très groovy et dansant.
Suit le matraquage infernal de Do you feel in control ? qu’on on imagine déjà en live sur scène avec des headbanging de folie et des rotations intensives de nuques.
Gotta Wanna Riot s’insère au bon moment. C’est le titre le plus fun et le plus tubesque de l’album. Papapapapapapara ! Un parfum retro, une mélodie dansante et un refrain ultra catchy qui s’imprègne carrément dans notre inconscient dès la première écoute. J’ai carrément pensé ici à leurs compatriotes de Royal Republic.
The Dirt I’m Buried In est cinématographique (d’ailleurs bien illustré dans la vidéo) avec des passages pop – disco 80’s et des magnifiques solos ensorcelantes.
Sans trop de répit, AVATAR enchaîne avec le très lourd et énervé Clouds Dipped In Chrome suivi par le tourbillonnant Hazmat Suit aux parfaites cadences frénétiques à la Motörhead.
On continue quasiment en rythme de valse, avec le morceau le plus surprenant, Train. Le chant de crooner séducteur de Eckerström se transforme soudainement en cris possédés, comme pour dévoiler une double personnalité. Dr Jekyll et Mr Hyde ?
L’album se termine avec Violence No Matter What, un hymne antifasciste et un duo époustouflant de Johannes Eckerström et Lzzy Hale de HALESTORM.
Un titre hyper puissant, une déferlante d’agressivité complétement Avataresque, et un duotout simplement majestueux.
C’est une déclaration aussi puissante par ses mots que par la musique qui les porte. Il se dégage de l’union entre ces deux voix qui se complètent parfaitement une force irrésistible qui impose le respect et la réflexion.
Eh bien, si on croyait tout connaitre sur AVATAR, on s’est bien trompé car avec Dance Devil Dance, il est clair qu’on marche de surprise en surprise.
Tout au long de l’album on est continuellement challengé ! La capacité du groupe à mélanger les différents genres musicaux avec beaucoup d’inventivité et de talent est impressionnante. Ils n’ont pas peur d’expérimenter différents styles dans le même morceau : des passages très lourds se tissent dans d’autres plus rock, des atmosphères très dark s’imbriquent dans ceux très fun, l’électro et la pop côtoyaient le death métal, le tout créant un groove fantastique.
La superbe gamme vocale de Johannes Eckerström, les riffs lourds et complexes de Jonas Jarlsby et Tim Öhrström, les lignes de basse solides d’Henrik Sandelin et le jeu extrêmement précis du batteur John Alfredsson maintient l’album à un rythme effréné de bout en bout.
C’est fort, c’est surprenant, c’est délicieusement accrocheur et totalement dingue ! Dance Devil Dance est décidément un chef-d’œuvre ! Un groupe au somment de son art !
AVATAR nous a convaincu depuis bien longtemps et avec Dance Devil Dance le groupe suédois enfonce le clou et nous met simplement KO.

A few days before their three sold-out concerts in France (Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux), let’s explore the ninth album of the Swedish band AVATAR, Dance Devil Dance, released on February 17, 2022 on Black Waltz Records (the band’s own label), distribution Thirty Tigers.
The AVATAR’s universe is well known for breaking down successfully the borders between metal band, theatre and cinema. But what the heavy metal visionaries Johannes Eckerström (vocals), John Alfredsson (drums), Henrik Sandelin (bass), Jonas Jarlsby (guitar), Tim Öhrström (guitar) could offer us this time?
If we take a look at the cover that represents a Johannes Eckerström in blurry black and white, evil smile, diabolical gaze, we have like a premonition of what will lie ahead: A powerful musical experience offered by one of metal’s most creative and whimsical bands! So, let’s see what the Swedes have planned to make the devil dance.
It hits hard from the beginning with the title track, Dance Devil Dance. The bells in the intro quickly plunge us into darkness: the heavy riffs, the powerful rhythmic, the catchy melody and this exceptional voice sometimes clean, sometimes growled this is the perfect anthem for the opening of the demonic ball. Everything we love about Avatar is there!
Chimp Mosh Pit is aggressive and raw but also incredibly catchy by its funky-rock side. The pinnacle of Avatar power. Another remarkable track that features Eckerström’s powerful perched voice and a breath-taking rhythm section.
Amazing electro start for Valley of Disease, which pours wonderfully into the violence of death metal. Here we have one of the most aggressive songs on the album. The singing alternates again between the devastating growl and the beautiful melodic one. The infectious chorus is supported by heavy, screaming riffs and brlliant rhythmics.
The journey continues in totally unexpected territories with On the Beach, seagull cry in support (not so surprising given the title of the song!). The many excellent stylistic changes give it a very groovy and danceable side. Follows the infernal bludgeoning of Do you feel in control? that we already imagine live on stage with crazy headbanging and intensive neck rotations. The musicians here all seem to be possessed by the demon.
Gotta want to Riot fits in at the right time. It is the most fun and tubesque track of the album. Papapapapapapara! A retro perfume, a dancing melody and an ultra-catchy chorus that is completely impregnated in our unconscious from the first listening. I am really thinking here of their compatriots of Royal Republic. Hahaha!
The Dirt I’m Buried In is cinematic (well-illustrated in the video) with pop – disco 80’s passages and mesmerising guitar solos.
AVATAR continues with the very heavy and edgy Clouds Dipped In Chrome followed by the whirling Hazmat Suit with some Motörhead perfect frenetic cadences.
We continue almost in waltz rhythm, with the most surprising song, Train. Eckerström’s seductive crooner’s song suddenly turns into possessed screams, as if to reveal a split personality. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?
The album ends with Violence No Matter What, an anti-fascist anthem and a stunning duet by Johannes Eckerström and Lzzy Hale of HALESTORM.
It is a statement as powerful by its words as by the music that carries them. It emerges from the union between these two voices, which perfectly complement each other, an irresistible force that commands respect and reflection.
Well, if we thought we knew everything about AVATAR, we were wrong because with Dance Devil Dance, it is clear that we walk from surprise to surprise. Throughout the album we are continually challenged! The ability of the band to mix different musical genres with great inventiveness and talent is impressive. They are not afraid to experiment with different styles in the same song: very heavy passages are woven into others more rock, heavy atmospheres interlock with those fun, electro and pop rubbed shoulders with death metal, all in all creating a fantastic groove.
The superb vocal range of Johannes Eckerström, the heavy and complex riffs of Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrström, the solid bass lines of Henrik Sandelin and the extremely precise playing of drummer John Alfredsson keeps the album in a frantic pace from start to finish.
It’s strong, it’s surprising, it’s deliciously catchy and totally crazy! Dance Devil Dance, is definitely a masterpiece! A band at the pinnacle of its art!
AVATAR has convinced us long time ago but with Dance Devil Dance the Swedish band nail it and simply knock us out.
