In Conversation with Miruna, Tea et Alexa, the backing vocals of DIRTY SHIRT

Aujourd’hui, on vous invite à faire connaissance avec les adorables choristes / backing vocals du groupe, « les Tourterelles », comme elles sont affectueusement appelées par leur collègues de groupe.

On a eu le grand plaisir de les rencontrer au festival HELLFEST 2022, 2 jours après le show inoubliable de Dirty Shirt sur la scène Temple.

Talentueuses, pétillantes et toujours souriantes, les trois choristes apportent avec leurs magnifiques voix et leurs chorégraphies joyeuses, de l’énergie et beaucoup de sensibilité aux sonorités metalcore mixés à la musique traditionnelle roumaine du groupe.

Alexa Joicaliuc et Miruna Puiu jouent avec le groupe depuis 2017, alors que Tea Visan les a rejointes en 2020, juste avant la pandémie. Elles nous ont partagé leurs impressions du festival et nous ont parlé avec beaucoup de sincérité et d’humour de leur plaisir de jouer avec Dirty Shirt, de leurs choix de costumes ou des leurs chansons préférées.

Comment vous avez trouvé le concert à HELLFEST depuis la scène ?

Alexa : Ça a été accablant mais extraordinaire. Il y avait de plus en plus de monde qui arrivait devant la scène. Il y avait de plus en plus de têtes qui se rajoutait à la foule. C’était la plus jolie mer qu’on pouvait voir.

Comment vous semblent les concerts maintenant, après la pandémie ? 

Miruna : Tout ce temps quand on n’a pas chanté et on n’a pas eu d’activité avec le groupe, on sentait qu’il y avait quelque chose qui manquait dans notre vie, sans se rendre compte forcement quoi. Et en fait, quand on a repris, on s’est rendu compte que c’est vraiment ça qu’il fallait faire pour se sentir accomplie.

Tea : Tu ne comprenais pas pourquoi tu deviens dépressive. Ce n’était pas facile pour nous. Tout le monde faisait du home office, mais pour nous ce n’était pas possible. On ne pouvait pas jouer dans la salle de bain.

Alexa : Le projet Pandemic Special avec tous les épisodes qu’on a fait sur Facebook, nous a beaucoup aidé pendant la pandémie, surtout pendant les 3 mois de confinement quand on ne savait vraiment pas quoi faire. C’était le moyen de rester connectés tous ensemble, car on avait chacun un texte à faire. Même si on avait du matériel disponible, s’il n’y avait pas Mihai et les garçons qui nous ont donné l’impulse de faire quelque chose, ça aurait était pire.

Et quand on a dû revenir au travail, j’ai l’impression qu’on est tous revenu avec beaucoup plus d’énergie, de motivation et avec un énorme désir que tout soit parfait. Tout le monde a travaillé avec beaucoup plus d’entrain.  

Tea : Et pas seulement nous, mais le public aussi était beaucoup plus expansif. Ça se voyait. Le public avait envie de profiter, de se défouler plus qu’avant. Ils dansaient, ils sautaient avec beaucoup plus d’enthousiasme. C’est clair que les concerts leur ont manqué de la même façon qu’à nous.

Alexa : Avant, tout était un peu automatique, un peu comme gagné d’avance. On allait chanter, on rencontrait des gens. Tu savais que dans quelque mois tu allais revenir dans la même ville, peut être au même endroit, peut être avec les mêmes personnes, mais maintenant c’est devenu beaucoup plus spécial.

Tea : Maintenant, on ne prend plus les choses comme acquises. Tu ne sais plus quand tu vas pouvoir voir le prochain concert. Les gens apprécient beaucoup plus maintenant et ça se voit. Nous aussi on apprécie beaucoup plus.

Vous avez fait du crowd surfing à HELLFEST, comme a été cette expérience pour vous ?

Alexa : c’était la première fois. C’était l’idée de Dan, notre chanteur de faire du crowdsurfing sur la chanson Latcho Drom. Ce morceau est super énergique et on ne chante pas dessous. En général, sur cette chanson, on danse seulement et on interagit avec le public, on l’encourage à danser avec nous. Et donc, juste avant le concert, il nous a demandé si on veut sauter dans le public.

Tea : Évidement, qu’on a dit oui et avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme, car il faut très une peu fou pour être en accord avec ce groupe.

Miruna : c’est vraiment génial car le gens qui te portent sur leurs mains sont très délicats. Ils font vraiment attention de ne pas nous toucher par inadvertance pour qu’on ne soit pas gênés et qu’on se sent en sécurité. C’était vraiment merveilleux. On aurait dit qu’on flottait au-dessus de la foule.

Tea : et ils ont fait attention qu’on ne tombe pas.  A aucun moment je n’ai pas eu peur de tomber.

Quel concert vous avez aimé à Hellfest ?

Alexa : On a vu Bury Tomorrow et on est tombé un peu amoureuses toutes les trois du chanteur qui chante clean.  

Miruna : On a vu Igorrr. On les a déjà vu à Pol’ and’ Rock, l’année dernière quand on a eu un concert aussi et c’est vraiment Whoau !

Tea : moi, j’ai beaucoup aimé Nightwish et Heilung

Alexa : Sur Bloody Beetroots, on a bien bougé et on s’est retrouvés avec des courbatures.   

Il y a beaucoup de musiciens sur scène avec DIRTY SHIRT & Transylvanian Folkcore Orchestra. l’orchestre porte des costumes traditionnels, les garçons sont plutôt habillés en noir. Et vous, comment vous choisissez vos costumes de scène ?

Alexa : L’étape choisir les costumes est très importante pour nous, car ça nous offre une homogénéité comme image, de la même façon que la partie de chorégraphie.

Avant, c’était simple – il fallait que ça soit noir, mais on s’est rendu compte après les 2 concerts qu’on a faits ensemble qu’on est sur des stylés totalement différents. Le style de chacune reflète sa personnalité et aussi, sa personnalité artistique. On a donc essayé de trouver une thématique, une inspiration avant chaque concert.

C’était le cas pour HELLFEST où on était habillées en blanc. Je suis entré dans un outlet, j’ai trouvé un top blanc et j’ai dit aux filles Soyons les Angels in Hell.

Après le choix de la thématique, on essaye de s’adapter et de trouver des vêtements qui vont avec notre silhouette et là, ça devient plus compliqué.

Tea : On essaye de faire croire que tous nos outfits sont de la Louis Vuitton, mais en fait ils viennent de la outlet et la jupe a couté 40 lei (approx 9 Euros).

Alexa : En général, tous les outfits qu’on a déjà porté en concert n’ont pas couté plus que 100 lei -si on ne considère pas les accessoires. 

Miruna : c’est important qu’ils soient de bon goût.

Alexa : Le blanc à Hellfest, c’était vraiment la première et peut être la dernière fois, parce que en général on a des outfits dans les couleurs du groupe – un mix de noir, rouge et blanc ou seulement un total look noir.

Tea : pour cette tournée, on a aussi pris des vêtements chez H&M et on a collé le nom Dirty Shirt dessous.

Alexa : on a aussi eu de costumes de bicyclistes pour être une peu sport et confortables, mais les garçons ont trouvé qu’elles sont une peu ennuyeuses. Ils aimaient mieux quand on portait de robes.

Tea : Nous aussi on s’ennuie un peu, 3 concerts avec les mêmes outfits…on aime bien changer.

Alexa : Pour le lancement de l‘album à Bucarest, on a aussi réinterprété les outfits du clip Get Your Dose Down.

Donc, vous avez la liberté de choisir vous-même ce que vous voulez porter ? Ce n’est pas imposé par le groupe.

Miruna : oui, absolument. D’ailleurs pour tout ce qu’on fait dans le groupe, notre avis et notre implication sont très importante : dans la façon de s’habiller, les photos, les videos, etc

Tea : ils avaient besoin d’un regard féminin et une énergie féminine dans cette troupe et ils nous font confiance. Comme d’ailleurs nous aussi, on leur fait confiance.

C’est difficile la vie en tournée pour vous ?

Miruna : La chose la plus difficile est que nous avons besoin de plus de temps pour être prêtes que les garçons. Et pas seulement qu’ils doivent nous attendre mais nous, on doit réduire le temps de table, de communication pour qu’on puisse être prêtes en même temps qu’eux. Mais on a toujours le meilleur confort. Ils nous offrent toujours le meilleur confort, avec la meilleure chambre, notre propre salle de bain. Ils prennent vraiment soin de nous.

Tea : Eux, ils viennent avec un petit bagage. Et nous on a toujours beaucoup de bagages, les vêtements, le maquillage. Ils nous aident à porter nos bagages, mais pour une nuit d’hôtel, un concert, on a l’impression de porter des bagages tous les temps.

Quelle est la différence entre les concerts en Roumanie et celles à l’étranger ?

Tea : En Roumanie, il ya moins de monde au concert, mais il y a des fans dévoués, très fidèles. Tout le monde connait les paroles de toutes les chansons.

Ils nous connaissent, ils savent le nom de chacun d’entre nous. Récemment on a joué et c’était mon anniversaire. Ils savaient que c’était mon anniversaire et ils ont commencé à chanter joyeuse anniversaire.

A l’étranger, il y a beaucoup plus de monde qui nous découvre. On voit qu’ils aiment et qu’ils passent un bon moment. Ça, c’est très impressionnant. Ça veut dire qu’on fait vraiment quelque chose spécial et différent.

Vous avez une chanson préférée à chanter en concert ?

Alexa: Si je devais choisir dans les concerts plus anciens, ça serait Nice Song, parce que c’est quelque chose très sentimental. Je suis assez sensible, j’ai ce côté soulful. Dans le nouvel album, c’est New Conspirancy, mais on ne l’a pas chanté à Hellfest.

Miruna : Parmi ceux qu’on a chanté à Hellfest, ma préférée est Hot For Summer. Elle est vraiment géniale et puis, l’énergie du public sur cette chanson, avec le bras en l’air synchronisés, c’était WHAOU ! On l’appelle notre morceau de l’Eurovision.

Tea : Moi, j’aime beaucoup la chorégraphie qu’on a fait sur Nem Loptam, mais on ne l’a pas chanté à Hellfest. C’est très fun, énergique. Après cette chanson, on a du mal à se remettre, mais ça vaut la peine.

Comment vous choisissez les morceaux de la set list ?

Miruna : On vote. Si on chante avec l’orchestre tout le monde doit voter. Pas seulement le groupe Dirty Shirt. Et si on doit chanter seulement 1 heure ou moins, on vote quelle chanson on doit éliminer.

Alexa: En fonction de temps qu’on a pour chanter, il y a des sets list déjà faite et des chansons qui sont obligatoires, car on sait qu’elles représentent « le statement » du groupe et que le public réagit très bien à ces morceaux.

Mais quand il s’agit de nouvelles chansons, on a besoin de temps. Cette fois, on a eu besoin d’une semaine de vote et de discussions et cela a été un chaos gigantesque dans les commentaires, car à un moment on ne pouvait pas sélectionner les buttons. Les garçons disaient qu’ils ne comprennent pas pourquoi on a besoin de démocratie.

Tea : il y a beaucoup de chansons et on s’attache à beaucoup d’entre elles. Moi, personnellement j’aime chanter des morceaux qui ne sont pas très connus, probablement parce qu’on les chante moins souvent. C’était sympas récemment à Baia Mare où on a chanté 2 h 30 et on a pratiquement chanté toutes les chansons.

Alexa :  C’était un peu difficile, car on a chanté en continu toute journée. Le même jour, on a répété 2 fois le set. Ça veut dire 5 heures de répétitions plus 2h30 heures de concert.

Un dernier mot 

Miruna: j’aimerais bien remercier les garçons de m’avoir réalisé le rêve de chanter avec eux, sans qu’ils sachent que c’était mon rêve. On était avant dans une troupe avec Alexa et quand j’ai vu Dirty Shirt la première fois et je me suis dit que j’aimerais beaucoup jouer avec eux.

Et 4 ans après, quand ils nous ont appelé pour chanter avec eux, je pense que c’était le meilleur moment de ma vie.   

Tea : C’était la même chose pour moi. J’allais à tous leurs concerts et je connaissais par cœur toutes les chansons. Je n’ai même pas eu besoin de les apprendre quand j’ai commencé à jouer avec eux car je les connaissais déjà.

Et je pensais comment ça sera de jouer avec eux mais je n’y croyais pas. Je me disais ok calme toi, cela ne va pas arriver. Et un jour, il ya le téléphone qui sonne et j’entends c’est Mihai Tivadar de Dirty Shirt, est-ce que veux chanter avec nous ? Je pensais que c’était une blague. Et j’ai dit Ok. Et puis, j’ai raccroché et j’ai hurlé « Maman devine qui m’a appelé !!! »

Le mieux c’est qu’on les a vu sur scène et on voulait jouer avec eux, mais on ne savait pas comment ils sont en tant que personnes. Et la surprise a été qu’ils sont des personnes fantastiques et on s’entends très bien. Donc, la distraction n’est pas seulement sur scène, mais de début jusqu’ à la fin de la tournée. On s’amuse, on fait la fête. J’ai fait de Vlogs et quand je montre à ma mère, elle ne comprend rien, il y n’a pas de sens à ce qu’on fait et c’est ça qui est amusant…

Alexa : Moi, je veux leur remercier pour qu’ils m’aident à grandir et qu’ils m’acceptent et me laisse être comme je suis, car je pense que pour un artiste (même si j’ai impression d’avoir le syndrome de l’imposteur) est très important d’avoir un espace dans lequel tu peux d’exprimer et tu peux être libre et te sentir encouragé. 

Miruna : Tout ce qui se passe en Dirty Shirt, c’est un Inside Joke. Si quelqu’un vient de l’extérieur, il ne va rien comprendre. C’est comme si on parlait notre propre langage à nous, une langue étrangère que personne d’autre ne comprend.

Tea : Il ya toujours quelque chose qui se passe avec Dirty Shirt, mais tu ne peux pas anticiper. C’est toujours une surprise, comme un œuf Kinder.

Today, we invite you to meet the adorable backing vocals of the band, “the Turtledoves”, as they are affectionately called by their band-mates.

We had the great pleasure of meeting them at the HELLFEST 2022, 2 days after the unforgettable Dirty Shirt show on the Temple stage. Talented, sparkling and always smiling, the three singers bring with their magnificent voices and their joyful choreographies, positive energy and a lot of sensitivity to metalcore sounds mixed with traditional Romanian music.

Alexa Joicaliuc and Miruna Puiu have been playing with the band since 2017 while Tea Visan joined them in 2020, just before the pandemic.

They shared with us their impressions about the festival and told us with a lot of sincerity and fun about their pleasure of playing with Dirty Shirt, their outfit choices, their favourite songs and many other things.

How did you find the concert at HELLFEST from the stage?  

Alexa: It’s been overwhelming but extraordinary. There were more and more people arriving in front of the stage. There were more and more heads adding to the crowd. It was the prettiest sea you could see.

How do the concerts look to you now, after the pandemic?  

Miruna: All this time when we didn’t sing and we didn’t have any activity with the band, we felt that there was something missing in our life, without necessarily realizing what. And actually, when we resumed, we realized that this is really what we had to do to feel accomplished.

Tea: You didn’t understand why you become depressed. It wasn’t easy for us. Everyone was doing home office, but for us it was not possible. We couldn’t play in the bathroom.

Alexa: The Pandemic Special project with all the episodes we did on Facebook, helped us a lot during the pandemic, especially during the 3 months of Lockdown, when we really didn’t know what to do. It was the way to stay connected together, because we each had a text to write. If it weren’t for Mihai and the boys who gave us the impulse to do something, it would have been worse.

And when we had to come back to work, I feel like we all came back with a lot more energy, motivation and a huge desire for everything to be perfect. Everyone worked much more enthusiastically.

Tea: And not just us, but the audience was also much more expansive. They wanted to enjoy, to let off steam more than before. They danced, they jumped with much more enthusiasm. It’s clear that they missed the concerts as much as we missed them.

Alexa: Before, everything was a bit automatic. We sing, we meet people. You knew that in a few months you were going to come back to the same city, maybe to the same place, maybe with the same people, but now it’s become much more special.

Tea: Now, we don’t take things for granted. You don’t know when you’ll be able to see the next concert. People appreciate a concert much more and they show it. We also appreciate much more.

You did crowd surfing at HELLFEST, how was this experience for you?

Alexa: It was the first time. It was Dan’s idea, our singer, to do crowd surfing on the song Latcho Drom. This song is super energetic and we don’t sing underneath.

In general, on this song, we only dance and interact with the audience, we encourage them to dance with us. And just before the concert, Dan asked us if we want to jump into the audience. 

Tea: Obviously, we said yes and with a lot of enthusiasm, because you have to be little a crazy to be part of this band.

Miruna: It’s really great because the people who wear you on their hands are very delicate. They are really careful not to touch us by mistake so make us feel embarrassed and also to feel safe. It was really wonderful. It looked like we were floating above the crowd. 

Tea: And they were careful not let us to fall down. I really was not afraid to fall down at any moment.

Which concert did you loved at Hellfest?

Alexa: We saw Bury Tomorrow and the three of us fell in love with the singer who sings clean. 

Miruna: We saw Igorrr. We already saw them at Pol’ and’ Rock, last year when we had a concert too and it’s really Whoau!

Tea: I really liked Nightwish and Heilung

Alexa: On Bloody Beetroots, we moved well and we ended up with aches.

There are many musicians on stage with DIRTY SHIRT & Transylvanian Folkcore Orchestra. The musician of Orchestra wears traditional costumes, the boys are rather dressed in black. And you, how do you choose your stage outfits? 

Alexa: The choosing of the outfits is very important for us, because it offers us a homogeneity as an image, in the same way as the choreography part. Before, it was simple – it had to be black, but we realized after the 2 concerts we did together that we have totally different styles. The style of each reflects her personality and also, her artistic personality.

So, we try to find a theme, an inspiration before each concert. This was the case for HELLFEST where we were dressed in white. I went into an outlet and I found a white top and told the girls Let’s be the Angels in Hell!

After choosing the theme, we try to adapt and find clothes that go with our silhouette and there, it becomes more complicated. 

Tea: We try to make believe that all our outfits are coming from Louis Vuitton, but in fact they come from the outlet and the skirt cost 40 lei (approx 9 Euros). 

Alexa: In general, all the outfits we’ve ever worn in concert didn’t cost more than 100 lei – if we don’t consider the accessorie

Miruna: It’s important that they have a good taste.

Alexa: White at Hellfest was really once in a life time, because usually we have outfits in the colors of the band – a mix of black, red and white or just a total black look.

Tea: For this tour, we also took clothes from H&M and stuck the name Dirty Shirt underneath.

Alexa: We also had bicyclist suits to look a bit sporty and comfortable but the boys found them a little boring. They liked it better when we wore dresses. 

Tea: we are also a little bored, if we wear same outfit for 3 concerts. We like to change.

Alexa: For the release party of the album in Bucharest, we also reinterpreted the outfits of the video clip Get Your Dose Down.

So, you have the freedom to choose for yourself what you want to wear? It is not imposed by the band

Miruna: Yes, absolutely. Moreover, for everything we do in the band, our opinion and our involvement are very important: in the way of dressing, photos, videos, etc.

Tea: they needed a feminine touch and a feminine energy in this band and they trust us. We also trust them.

Is life on tour difficult for you?

Miruna: The hardest thing is that we need more time to be ready than the boys. And not only that they have to wait for us but we have to reduce the time of table, communication so that we can be ready at the same time as them.

But we always have the best comfort. They always offer us the best comfort, the best room, our own bathroom. They really take care of us. 

Tea: They come with a little baggage. And we always have a lot of luggage, clothes, makeup. They help us carry our luggage, but when there is one hotel night, one concert, it feels like we are carrying our luggage all the time.

What is the difference between concerts in Romania and those abroad?

Tea: In Romania there are less people at concerts, but there are devoted and very loyal fans. Everyone knows the lyrics of all the songs. They know us, they know the name of each and every one of us. Recently, we played and it was my birthday. They knew it and they started singing happy birthday. Abroad, there are many more people who discover us. We see that they love and they have a good time. That’s very impressive. It means that we are really doing something special and different.

Do you have a favourite song to sing live?

Alexa: If I had to choose from the older concerts, it would be Nice Song, because it’s something very sentimental. I’m quite sensitive, I have this soulful side. In the new album, it’s New Conspirancy, but we didn’t sing it at Hellfest.

Miruna: Of the ones we sang at Hellfest, my favorite is Hot For Summer. It’s really great and then, the energy of the audience on this song, with the arms synchronized in the air, it was WHAOU! We call it our Eurovision song.

Tea: I really like the choreography that we did on Nem Loptam, but we didn’t sing it at Hellfest. It’s very fun, energetic. After this song, it’s hard to recover, but it’s worth it.

How do you choose songs from the set list?

Miruna: We vote. If we sing with the orchestra, everyone has to vote. Not just the band Dirty Shirt. And if we have to sing only 1 hour or less, we vote which song we should eliminate. 

Alexa: Depending on how much time we have to sing, there are sets lists already done and songs that are mandatory, because we know that they represent the statement of the band and that the public reacts very well to these songs.  But when it comes to new songs, we need time. This time, we needed a week of voting and discussions and it was a gigantic chaos in the comments, because at one point, we could not select the buttons on Facebook. The boys said they don’t understand why democracy is needed.

Tea: There are a lot of songs and we are very fond of a lot of them.   Personally, I like to sing songs that are not very well known, probably because they are sung less often. It was nice recently in Baia Mare, where we sang 2:30 and we sang almost all the songs

Alexa: It was a bit difficult, because we sang continuously all day. On the same day, we rehearsed the set 2 times. That means 5 hours of rehearsals plus 2h30 hours of concert. 

A final word

Miruna: I would like to thank the boys for fulfilling my dream of singing with them, without them knowing it was my dream. We were before in another band with Alexa and when I saw Dirty Shirt the first time and I thought I’d love to play with them. 

And 4 years later, when they called us to sing with them, I think it was the best moment of my life.

Tea: Same for me. I went to all their concerts and knew all the songs by heart. I didn’t even need to learn them when I started playing with them because, I already knew them.  And I thought what it would be like to play with them but I didn’t believe it. I was thinking ok calm down, this is not going to happen. And one day the phone rings and I heard: it’s Mihai Tivadar from Dirty Shirt, do you want to sing with us? I thought it was a joke. And I said OK. And then I hung up and yelled “Mom guess who called me!!!”

The best part is that we saw them on stage and we wanted to play with them, but we didn’t know how they are as people. And the surprise was that they are fantastic people and we get along very well. So, the fun is not just on stage, but from the beginning to the end of the tour. We have fun, we party. I did Vlogs and when I show my mom, she doesn’t understand anything, there’s no sense in what we do and that’s what’s fun…

Alexa: I would like to thank them for helping me growing up and accepting me and letting me be the way I am, because I think for an artist (even if I feel like I have imposter syndrome here), it’s very important to have a space in which you can express yourself and you can be free and feel encouraged.

Miruna: Everything that happens in a Dirty Shirt is an Inside Joke. If someone comes from outside, they will not understand anything. It’s like speaking our own language, a foreign language that no one else understands.

Tea: There’s always something going on with Dirty Shirt but you can’t anticipate. It’s always a surprise, like a kinder egg.
