Lundi 13 juin, Justin Benlolo, le chanteur guitariste du groupe de rock alternatif de Toronto, BRKN LOVE (prononcez Broken Love), était de passage à Paris, au Dr Feelgood Rocket, pour une journée promo, suivie d’un showcase acoustique.
Souvenez-vous, le 14 février 2020, en pleine pandémie, BRKN Love sortait un excellent 1er album éponyme (on vous a parlé ici). Évidemment, cet album n’a pas pu bénéficier de la promotion qu’il méritait et surtout de la tournée qui aurait dû suivre sa sortie. Mais cela n’a pas découragé les jeunes canadiens.
Le 19 novembre 2020, l’album ressortait en version Deluxe, flanqué de 4 titres supplémentaires dont River, une reprise du hit de Bishop Briggs, morceau qui a été utilisé dans plus de 52 000 vidéos d’utilisateurs sur Tik Tok avec plus de 1 milliard de vues (sans précédent pour un nouveau groupe de rock).
Depuis, le groupe a amassé des dizaines de millions de streams, parcouru des milliers de kilomètres sur la route aux côtés de Badflower, Highly Suspect et Dinosaur Pile-Up et il a reçu les éloges de la presse de spécialité.
En cours de route, les canadiens ont enregistré Black Box vol. 1 avec le producteur Anton DeLost [Cleopatrick, Seaway, State Champs]. Ce 1er EP sorti le 3 juin sera suivi par l’EP numéro 2, le 9 Septembre et en fin, le Full album qui regroupera les 2 EP plus 3 titres supplémentaires est attendu pour le 7 octobre 2022.
Guitares musclés, voix puissante, gros refrains et rythmique hyper énergétique, la musique de BRKN Love peut être qualifié comme du rock brut abrasive agrémenté de blues avec des influences disco et funky 70’s. Bref, Groovy Rock N’Roll qui fait danser les foules !
Mais revenons sur cette soirée parisienne qui marquait donc le premier live en France et en Europe du jeune canadien. Accompagné de sa guitare, le fronman a interprété 2 morceaux extrais de Black Box vol. 1 : Like A Drug et Little Black Box (chanté live pour la première fois) et aussi 4 morceaux de son premier album: Seventeen, la rugissante Shot Down, la groovy Flies in the Honey et I cant lie ainsi que la reprise de Best Of You (Foo Fighters) .
Une excellente occasion de faire connaissance avec son répertoire et apprécier ses qualités vocales impressionnante. Le musicien a exprimé sa joie d’être là et a remercié plusieurs fois l’audience qui l’a chaudement applaudi et à tous ceux qui ont rendu cette performance possible.
En attendent le nouvel album et un vrai show BRKN Love, découvrez le flamboyant Dead Weight, le 3e single consécutif du groupe classé dans le Top 10 au Canada et l’accrocheur Like A Drug avec ses riffs décalés, ses voix grinçantes et son swing diaboliquement dansant. Enfin, à noter que depuis quelques années, Justin est aussi l’un des chanteurs / musiciens que Desmond Child a sélectionnés pour participer à son show “Desmond Child Live” qui retrace sa fameuse carrière de d’auteur / compositeur / producteur : You Give Love A Bad Name de Bon Jovi, Dude Looks Like A Lady de Aerosmith ou I Was Made For Lovin’ You de Kiss sont juste quelques exemples de hits inscrits dans son palmarès. On Monday, June 13, Justin Benlolo, the singer-guitarist of Toronto’s alternative rock band, BRKN LOVE (pronounced Broken Love), was in Paris at Dr. Feelgood Rocket for a promo day, followed by an acoustic showcase.
You remember, on February 14, 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, BRKN Love released an excellent debut self-titled album (we talked about here). Obviously, this album could not benefit from the promotion it deserved and especially, of the tour that should have followed its release.
But that has not discouraged the young Canadians. On November 19, 2020 the album was released in Deluxe version, flanked by 4 additional tracks including River, a cover of The Bishop Briggs hit, a song that has been used in more than 52k user videos on Tik Tok with over 1 billion views (unprecedented for a new rock act).
Since then, the band has amassed tens of millions of streams, travelled thousands of miles on the road alongside Badflower, Highly Suspect and Dinosaur Pile-Up and has received praise from the specialty press.
Along the way, the Canadians recorded Black Box vol. 1 with producer Anton DeLost (Cleopatrick, Seaway, State Champs). This 1st EP released on June 3 will be followed by the Vol 2, on September 9 and at finally, the full-length album which will bring together the 2 EPs plus 3 additional tracks is due for October 7, 2022.
Muscular guitars, powerful vocals, big choruses and hyper energetic rhythmic, the music of BRKN Love can be described as abrasive raw rock infused with blues and 70’s disco – funky influences. Groovy Rock N’ Roll that makes the crowds dance!
But let’s go back to this Parisian evening which marked the young Canadian’s first live shwo in France and Europe. Accompanied by his guitar, the frontman performed 2 tracks from Black Box vol. 1: Like A Drug and Little Black Box (performed live for the first time) – and also 4 songs from the first album: Seventeen, the roaring Shot Down, the groovy Flies in the Honey and I can’t lie as well as the cover of Best Of You (Foo Fighters).
A great opportunity to get to know BRKN Love music and appreciate Justin’s impressive vocal qualities. The frontman expressed his joy at being there and thanked several times the audience who warmly applauded him and also to all those who made his venue possible.
While waiting for the new album and before seeing a real BRKN Love show: discover Dead Weight, the band’s 3rd straight Top 10 single in Canada, and the catchy Like A Drug with its stomping off-kilter riffing, snarling vocals and its devilishly danceable swing.
