Reprendre les meilleures chansons de Led Zeppelin, l’un des groupes les plus emblématiques du rock, n’est pas chose facile. Tout d’abord, parce qu’il y a eu de centaines, peut-être de milliers des reprises de leur morceaux, donc le risque de passer inaperçu est trop grand. Et ensuite, qu’on se rapproche trop de l’original ou qu’on fait sa propre version totalement différente, il y a toujours le risque de s’attirer la foudre de fans et de la critique criant Sacrilège !
Il fallait donc avoir du cran pour en faire tout un album de reprises Led Zeppelin et Beth Hart l’a eu. La chanteuse américaine a relevé le défi haut la main avec l’album A Tribute to Led Zeppelin qui sort le 25 février via Provogue/Mascot Label Group et sera disponible en version numérique, CD et LP (Black vinyl, Orange transparent vinyl et Splatter red gold vinyl).
Beth Hart est reconnue comme l’une des voix blues-rock les plus époustouflante de sa génération. Avec une quinzaine d’albums à son actif, elle a fait salle comble lors de nombreuses tournées dans le monde entier, y compris des représentations dans des lieux historiques tels que le Ryman Auditorium de Nashville, le Royal Albert Hall de Londres et le Ziggo Dome d’Amsterdam. Nommée au Grammys Award, elle a été six fois en tête des charts Billboard Blues, elle est devenue double platine et a eu une série d’albums dans le Top 10 à travers l’Europe.
L’idée de ce cet album hommage a commencé à grandir pendant la session d’enregistrement de son album précèdent ‘War in My Mind’ lorsque la chanteuse californienne a improvisé une version de ‘Whole Lotta Love’. C’est alors le producteur Rob Cavallo qui a eu l’idée de faire un album de reprises. Mais elle n’était pas prête : “ Je ne peux pas faire un tel album. Pour chanter de tels morceaux, il faut avoir envie d’en débattre et ça fait des années que je travaille justement pour canaliser la rage qui est en moi”.
C’est la pandémie qui a changé les choses. La frustration et la colère de la situation lui ont permis de se mettre dans le bon état esprit et laisser exploser cette fureur nécessaire pour enregistrer ces neufs classiques de Led Zeppelin.
Alors Beth Hart ensemble avec le producteur Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance) et l’ingénieur Doug McKean (Goo Goo Dolls, Adam Lambert, Gerard Way) se sont mis au travail. Avec le support de son groupe d’accompagnement incluant Cavallo à la guitare avec Tim Pierce (Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner), à la basse Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Jane’s Addiction, Slash), aux claviers Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Rolling Stones), à la batterie Dorian Crozier (Céline Dion, Miley Cyrus, Joe Cocker) et Matt Laug (Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper) et David Campbell (Muse, Aerosmith, Beyoncé) pour les arrangements orchestraux.
Beth Hart a saisi l’esprit de chaque chanson, elle se l’est appropriée et en a fait sa propre version. C’est une expérience formidable de l’écouter chanter ces hymnes rock.
Réaliser cet hommage c’était aussi l’occasion d’exprimer sa profonde admiration quelle nourri pour Led Zeppelin depuis son plus jeune âge, quand son frère lui fait découvrir le heavy rock avec Led Zeppelin et Black Sabbath.
Parlant de la musique de Zeppelin qu’elle considère comme « les Beethoven des temps modernes » et de leur héritage elle déclare : « C’est si bien fait, c’est intemporel. Cela durera éternellement. Parfois, les gens viennent, et ils viennent d’une autre planète, et ils créent ces œuvres d’art qui resterons pour toujours, comme la Joconde. »
Le groupe légendaire l’a toujours accompagnée dans sa remarquable carrière de chanteuse, compositrice et instrumentiste. Ses débuts avec d’Immortal en 1996 se font sur un label majeur, Atlantic, le même label a introduit Led Zeppelin dans le monde en 1969.
Son interprétation incendiaire de Whole Lotta Love en 2004 sur la scène du Paradiso à Amsterdam a fait que la chanson est devenue une habituelle dans sa setlist au fil des ans, y compris une performance mémorable avec Slash.
Pas étonnant donc que Whole Lotta Love soit la chanson d’ouverture de l’album, un de morceau le plus reconnu et vénère de tous les temps avec ce riff inoubliable de JIMMY PAGE.
Ce qui nous interpelle toute de suite c’est cette voix puissante et rocailleuse qui frappe fort et s’approprie tous l’enregistrement. Beth met sa propre empreinte sur la chanson tout en rendent hommage à ROBERT PLANT.
Musicalement, Beth et son groupe restent très fidèles à l’original de 1969, en mettent quand même leur patte avec cette section psychédélique de la chanson qui intervient plus tôt dans la chanson.
Ce voyage passionnant continue à travers Kashmir avec un arrangement orchestral magnifique qui confère un coté dramatique et intense.
Sa gamme vocale extraordinaire et sa prestation délicate sur Stairway to Heaven rend cette chanson mythique inoubliable. Aidé par une rythmique très énergique, son interprétation de The Crunge très funky et théâtrale à la James Brown.
Les 2 superbes medleys, Dancing Days/When The Levee Breaks’ et No Quarter/Babe I’m going to Leave You’ fonctionnent très bien. Les passages d’un morceau à l’autre réinventent la façon de les écouter et de les chérir.
Sur Black Dog Beth Hart chante avec son cœur et fait sa propre version. Sa superbe voix bluesy se posse merveilleusement sur un arrangement orchestral impressionnant.
Good Times Bad Times est interprété dans la veine de Led Zeppelin. Sans essayer de copier Robert Plant, elle chante avec ses tripes et insuffle une nouvelle vie à la chanson avec sa voix roque et soul. Ma préfére!
Elle s’amuse même à la rendre au féminin en changent les paroles
“In the days of my youth, I was told what it means to be a woman”
The Rain Song est une belle chanson pour terminer l’album. Sa voix délicate et majestueuse et les cordes rendent cette balade grandiose et très raffiné.
Les neuf chansons qu’elle a choisi pour cet hommage mettent en évidence l’incroyable spectre dans lequel Led Zeppelin opérait, du rock puissant au psychédélisme, en passant par le folk, le jazz, la prog, le blues, le funk, la soul et au-delà.
Beth Hart fait un excellent travail pour rester fidèle aux racines blues rock de Led Zeppelin. En ayant un contrôle total sur sa voix, la chanteuse rend hommage sans copier ou imiter. Elle rajoute son propre timbre authentique, son âme, sa personnalité.

A Tribute to Led Zeppelin est un album génial qui fera le délice pour les fans de Beth Hart ainsi que pour les amateurs de Led Zeppelin.
C’est l’album qui rend hommage à Led Zeppelin mais c’est surtout l’album de l’interprétation extraordinaire de Beth Hart, de son identité vocale et de toute l’émotion qu’elle a mis dans ces reprises.

Covering the best songs of Led Zeppelin, one of the most iconic rock bands of all the time is not easy task. First of all, because there have been hundreds, maybe thousands of covers of their songs, so the risk of going unnoticed is too big. And either that we get too close to the original or that we make our own totally different version, there is always the risk of disapproval of fans or critics shouting Sacrilege!
So, you had to have guts to make a whole album of Led Zeppelin covers and Beth Hart got it. The American singer took up the challenge with the album A Tribute to Led Zeppelin which will be released on February 25 via Provogue/Mascot Label Group and will be available in digital, CD and LP versions (Black vinyl, Orange transparent vinyl and Splatter red gold vinyl).
Beth Hart is recognized as one of the most breath-taking blues-rock voices of her generation. With fifteen albums to her credit, she has sold out on numerous tours around the world, including performances at historic venues such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, London’s Royal Albert Hall and Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome.
The idea for this tribute album started to grow during the recording session of her album previous album ‘War in My Mind’ when the Californian singer idid an impromptu version of “Whole Lotta Love” in the control room during the session. It was then the producer Rob Cavallo who had the idea to make an album of covers. But she wasn’t ready: “I’m not doing this whole album. To do Zeppelin, you’ve got to be pissed off to hit that right. I can’t go there; I’ve worked years to put my rage away.”
It is the pandemic that has changed things. The frustration and anger of the situation allowed her to put her in the right state of mind and let explode necessary rage to record these nine classics of Led Zeppelin.
So, Beth Hart together with producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance) and engineer Doug McKean (Goo Goo Dolls, Adam Lambert, Gerard Way) got to work. With support from of an amazing band including Cavallo on guitar with Tim Pierce (Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner), bass Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Jane’s Addiction, Slash), keyboards Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Rolling Stones), drums Dorian Crozier (Celine Dion, Miley Cyrus, Joe Cocker) and Matt Laug (Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper) and David Campbell (Muse, Aerosmith, Beyoncé) for orchestral arrangements.
Making this tribute was also an opportunity to express his deep admiration for Led Zeppelin that entered in her life from a young age when his brother introduced him to heavy rock with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
Beth Hart captured the spirit of each song, appropriated it and made her own version of it. It’s a fantastic experience to listen to her singing these rock anthems.
Speaking about Zeppelin’s music, which she considers “the Beethoven of modern times” and their legacy, she says: “it’s so beautifully done, it’s timeless. It will go on forever. Sometimes people come along, and they’re from another planet, and they make these pieces of art which will forever be, like the Mona Lisa.”
The legendary band has always accompanied her in her remarkable career as a singer, composer and instrumentalist. Her debut with Immortal in 1996 was on a major label, Atlantic, the same label introduced Led Zeppelin to the world in 1969.
Her incendiary performance of “Whole Lotta Love” in 2004 on the Paradiso stage in Amsterdam made the song a semi-regular fixture in her setlist over the years, including a memorable performance with Slash.
No wonder Whole Lotta Love is the opening song of the album, one of the most recognized and revered tracks of all time with this unforgettable riff by JIMMY PAGE.
What immediately challenges us is this powerful and raspy voice that hits hard and appropriates all the recording. Beth puts her own stamp on the song while paying homage to ROBERT PLANT. Musically, Beth and her band remain very faithful to the 1969 original, still put their paw with this psychedelic section of the song that intervenes earlier in the song.
This exciting journey continues through Kashmir with a magnificent orchestral arrangement that imparts a dramatic and intense side. Her extraordinary vocal range and delicate performance on Stairway to Heaven makes this mythical song unforgettable.
Helped by a very energetic drums, her interpretation of The Crunge is supe funky and theatrical, very James Brownesque.
The 2 superb medleys, Dancing Days/When The Levee Breaks’ and No Quarter/Babe I’m going to Leave You’ work very well. The passages from one song to another reinvent the way we listen to and cherish these amazing tracks.
On Black Dog Beth Hart sings with her heart and makes her own version. Her superb bluesy voice leans wonderfully on an impressive orchestral arrangement.
Good Times Bad Times is performed in the vein of Led Zeppelin. Without trying to copy Robert Plant, she sings with her guts and breathes new life into the song with her rocky and soul voice. My favourite !
She even has fun making it feminine by changing the lyrics

The Rain Song is a beautiful song to end the album. Her delicate and majestic voice and the strings make this ride grandiose and very refined.
The nine-song album highlights the incredible spectrum that Led Zeppelin operated in, from powerhouse rock to psychedelia, folk, jazz, prog, blues, funk, soul and beyond.
Beth Hart does a great job of staying true to Led Zeppelin’s blues rock roots. By having full control over her voice, the singer pays tribute without copying or imitating. She adds her own authentic timbre, her soul, her personality. Beth Hart captured the spirit of each song, appropriated it and made her own version of it. It’s a fantastic experience to listen to her singing these rock anthems.
A Tribute to Led Zeppelin is an awesome album that will delight Beth Hart fans as well as Led Zeppelin fans. This is the album that pays tribute to Led Zeppelin but it is above all the album of the extraordinary interpretation of Beth Hart, her vocal identity and all the emotion that she put into singing these covers.
