En novembre dernier, le groupe français de métal moderne, DUST IN MIND a sorti leur 4eme album intitulé CTRL. Des mélodies riches et électrisantes, des riffs énergiques, une rythmique vibrante et entêtante, CTRL estun album passionnant qui dévoile une ambiance sombre et agressive et évoque les problèmes de la société d’aujourd’hui, les hauts et les bas de notre vie, les torrents d’émotions qui nous submergent.
Au fil des albums, le groupe originaire de Strasbourg, formé en 2014 et représenté par Damien DAUSCH (guitares/voix), Jennifer GERVAIS (voix), Xavier GUIOT (basse), Thomas MARASI (batterie) et Philippe MIRALLES (guitares) acherché à grandir, à se réinventer, à expérimenter des nouvelles sonorités.
La preuve : CTRL : Le son est encore plus abouti et plus mature, une véritable confirmation que l’expansion de DUST IN MIND est redoutable.
Une particularité qu’il faut absolument retenir quand on parle du DUST IN MIND : leur morceaux catchy sont accompagnés à chaque fois par des vidéos à couper le souffle, le groupe français étant le seul et unique groupe de Métal à avoir tourné en haut de la Tour Eiffel ! Bravo !
J’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer à Paris, l’adorable chanteuse du groupe Jennifer GERVAIS qui est non seulement une incroyable chanteuse mais aussi une talentueuse créatrice talentueuse de vêtements. On a parlé du groupe, de l’album, du tournage sur la Tour Eiffel, de son retour sur scène et bien sûr de la mode. Découvrez l’interview.
Comment vous vous êtes rencontré ?
Jennifer : C’était en 2013. Damien, le guitariste, le chanteur et le compositeur du groupe avait une idée de monter un projet avec une chanteuse. Il voulait faire du métal un peu industriel avec de samples électroniques. Nous étions amis de longue date et il m’a demandé si ça me dirait de chanter, faire un petit essai. Et j’ai dit avec grand plaisir. Je n’avais jamais eu de groupe avant. Je n’ai jamais chanté auparavant. Je n’ai jamais pris de cours de chant de ma vie, mais j’aimerais bien le faire un jour.
Damien savait que je chantais, mais comme on dit … je chantais sous la douche, pas du tout en public. Chanter a toujours été un rêve mais qui était trop loin pour moi. En même temps je ne savais pas trop dans quoi je m’aventurais. J’étais extrêmement timide.
Heureusement, Damien est une personne qui pousse vraiment les gens et je suis très contente qu’il m’ait poussé à sortir de ma zone de confort. Et au fur et à mesure j’y suis arrivée.
Et puis on a enregistré notre premier EP. Et quand on a vu le résultat, on s’est dit que ça mériterait de ne pas être qu’un projet studio. Ça mériterait d’être un vrai groupe, un groupe live. Et à ce moment-là on a commencé à recruter, regarder dans notre entourage des musiciens pour pouvoir monter le groupe.
Il y a eu un peu de changement de line up au début, mais là, on a une équipe super stable, très unie.
Damien s’occupe de tout ce qui est composition musicale, du chant, de la guitare et moi de d’écriture des textes et du chant.
D’où vient le nom de Dust In Mind ?
Jennifer : Si on traduit, bien sûr cela veut dire « poussière dans la tête » et en fait, ça rassemble tout ce qu’on garde en nous. Tous ce qui a été brulé mais qu’on a extériorisé et « Dust in Mind » c’est vraiment ce qu’on garde, ce qui reste toujours là quelque part, dans un coin de notre tête et qui nous tiens à cœur.
En fait, c’est un gros meli mélo de pensées qui se mélangent au final. C’est assez basique mais ça rassemble vraiment tous ce qu’on a en bruit constant dans nos têtes.
CRTL c’est votre 4eme album. Comment ça s’est passé l’écriture de cet album ?
Jennifer : Notre dernier album (From Ashes to Flame 2018) était à peine sorti que Damien avait déjà commencé à composer des morceaux pour CTRL. Donc ça a commencé il y a longtemps mais c’est vrai que pendant la pandémie ça s’est un peu essoufflé et notamment à cause de moi.
C’est-à-dire que Damien avait composé plusieurs morceaux et moi, j’ai eu ce qu’on appelle le syndrome de la page blanche. J’ai eu un petit blocage pendant le confinement. J’avais un million des choses à dire mais ça ne sortait pas.
Ça a pris pas mal de retard mais en même temps si je n’arrivais pas à extérioriser, c’était que peut-être il fallait que ça se passe comme ça. Le processus de composition s’est vraiment fait au fur et à mesure. Ça a pris plus de 2 ans, mais ça m’a permis de faire mûrir mes idées, mes textes et ça a aussi permis à Damien de vraiment travailler le son, rajouter des petits détails à gauche et à droite, de vraiment construire et d’élaborer les morceaux en détails. Donc, au final ça a pris un peu plus de temps mais c’est très bien comme ça.

Tu parles beaucoup d’enfermement dans les chansons…
Jennifer : Oui, complément. D’habitude, je n’ai pas du mal à parler, mais là je pense que j’étais bloquée, enfermée. J’avais plein des choses à dire mais je n’arrivais pas à les écrire. Et du jour au lendemain c’est revenu. Mais juste parce que j’ai parlé d’un autre thème et au final, ça a tout débloqué.
La période covid en termes de création de texte, ce n’était pas la meilleure de période, mais dans un sens ça nous a permis de travailler plus d’autre choses et surtout de faire de clips vidéo, par exemple. Plutôt que de subir le covid, on s’est dit il ne faut pas qu’on reste là les bras croisés à attendre que ça se passe, il faut qu’on tourne ça en « opportunité » et qu’on prenne le temps de faire les clips et tous ce qu’on n’a pas vraiment eu le temps de l’aboutir à 100%.
On a vraiment optimisé tout le temps qu’on avait pour pouvoir faire d’autres choses.
En parlent de vidéos clips, ils sont vraiment magnifiques. On voyage avec vous en bord de mer, dans le désert, dans un entrepôt abandonné et vous avez même filmé SYNAPSES sur la Tour Eiffel. Comment ça s’est passé ce tournage ?
Jennifer : C’était dingue ! En fait, on a vu le clip des rappeurs PNL sur la Tour Eiffel et quand on a vu ça, on s’est dit c’est donc possible… Si eux, ils l’ont fait, nous on va pouvoir le faire aussi.
On va prendre des risques, on va se bouger pour que ça marche. J’ai envoyé un email et j’ai écrit encore une fois avec mes tripes ce que j’en pensais et ce qu’on voulait. On voulait montrer qu’on est français à l’international, à donner cette image.
Et ils m’ont rappelé quelques heures plus tard. Ils m’ont demandé si on a du budget et j’ai dit non, on est pauvres. Je m’attendais qu’on me demande une somme mirobolante. Je leur ai expliqué qu’on est une association et on n’a pas des fonds. Et ils ont dit Ok, c’est bon vous payez juste quelques frais de tournages minimes. C’était comme si on tournait dans le restaurant à côté.
Et ils m’ont dit c’est la semaine prochaine, tel ou tel jour avant l’ouverture de la Tour Eiffel et vous avez 1 heure. Mais 1 heure au pied de la Tour Eiffel. Donc, il fallait qu’on monte dans l’ascenseur tout le matériel, il fallait qu’on construise la batterie, il fallait qu’on monte le matériel vidéo, les lumières, tout et il fallait ensuite qu’on démonte tout et qu’on redescend tout. On avait 1 heure pour tout ça.
Donc, au final, on a tourné en haut sur la Tour Eiffel peut être 15 minutes. Ce que vous voyez dans le clip c’est l’image brute, tout ce qu’on a fait là-bas.
Ça s’est fait tellement vite et on n’a presque pas compris ce qui s’est passé. C’était dingue ! on n’a pas vraiment réalisé nous-même ce qui s’est passé. On s’est dit c’est une opportunité, on ne peut pas la louper, on travaille dur.
Ok, il y a une belle vue mais là on ne va pas regarder la vue, on va juste travailler. On est arrivé en bas et on nous a dit, 1 heure s’est écoulé, il faut que vous partiez, donc, il fallait qu’on sorte notre van de la zone.
On est parti, on a fait 100 mètres et on s’est arrêté et on a tous explosé de rire. On s’est dit les gars on vient d’être sur la Tour Eiffel. On est le premier groupe rock métal à tourner sur la Tour Eiffel.
Et on est sorti tous du van, et on était tous transpirants, dégoulinants, et on s’est pris dans les bras… Rien que d’en parler …. C’était dingue … car on n’a pas réalisé ce qui nous tombait dessous et encore après c’est quand on a revu les images, là encore on s’est dit mais c’était pour du vrai. On n’a pas rêvé, on l’a fait !
C’était une chance, une opportunité incroyable et je pense l’accomplissement du groupe Dust in Mind, la plus grande chose qu’on a faite.
C’est vraiment très réussi. Les images d’intérieur sont très belles aussi. Où est-ce que vous avez filmé ?
Jennifer : A l’hôtel de ville de Strasbourg. C’est vrai que ça fait un peu établissement parisien aussi, Château de Versailles. C’est vraiment ce qu’on voulait donner, la French touch à 100%. On était aussi contents de pouvoir tourner des images de notre ville, à Strasbourg.
Est-ce que tu as une chanson que tu préfères sur l’album ?
Jennifer : Lost Control. Pour moi, elle est précieuse, parce qu’elle résume vraiment tout ce côté émotionnel que je ressens très fort. Elle est très importante. Mais il y a une chanson qui sortira avec l’album et avec le clip qui s’appelle Empty. C’est une chanson où c’est Damien qui chante le refrain et pour moi, elle est super puissante.
Et je trouve d’un autre côté que ça change. Le fait que ça soit lui qui chante le refrain et pas toujours moi. Je trouve qu’il a fait un super bon boulot. Je sens l’émotion qu’il voulait dire et je pense que c’est ma chanson préférée de l’album.
Vous avez collaboré avec Sylvain Hélaine alias Freaky Hoody, l’homme le plus tatoué de France, pour les clips et aussi pour la pochette de l’album. Comment vous l’avez rencontré ?
Jennifer : On a vu passer sur Facebook tous ses vidéos où il parlait de son histoire, du fait, qu’il professeur et qu’il y a eu un parent d’élève qui s’est plaint de son apparence.
Ça nous a beaucoup touché parce que on est un groupe qui défend beaucoup toute identité, tout style de différences, que ça soit l’origine, la couleur de peau, la religion, l’orientation sexuelle, tatouage ou pas tatouage. Son histoire est intéressante et en plus lui, physiquement, il est impressionnant. Il marque les esprits.
Il peut faire peur parfois mais au moins, ça a le mérite de dégager quelque chose. On lui a envoyé un email pour lui demander s’il est intéressé et il nous a répondu oui toute de suite, je viens pour tourner le clip.
C’est lui qui est venu chez nous, le clip a été tourné à côté de chez nous. Ça s’est super bien passé. Il est super gentil. Et comme le courant est bien passé bien et on avait une idée pour la pochette, on lui a demandé si ça lui dirait de faire la photo ?
Ce n’était pas prévu mais il a dit oui avec grand plaisir, c’est super, je suis content et voilà comme il s’est retrouvé sur la pochette de l’album. Ça s’est très bien passé, il a très bien joué dans le clip, il a donné plein d’idées. Il a contribué à énormément des choses. C’est très intéressant.
Le nom de l’album, CTRL, qu’est-ce que cela signifie ?
Jennifer : A la base, la chanson Lost Control est très importante car elle donne une ligne directrice à l’album qui rejoint la thématique globale de l’album – le lâcher prise. Du laisser-aller, du qu’est que qu’on va montrer comme émotion. Cette tendance. Moi par exemple, j’aime ressentir les choses vrais et fortes et passionnelles, dans ma vie en général.
C’est vrai que je n’aime pas les conversations très ah, il fait beau, etc… j’aime aller dans les choses très profondes et en fait, toute ma vie est liée à ça. Je suis quelqu’un très entier et parfois, c’est un défaut aussi parce que je ressens tellement les choses que ça me handicape ou je vais en souffrir.
En fait, il y a ce sentiment parfois qu’on peut se sentir comme emprisonné parce qu’on ressent trop fort les choses et on ne peut pas forcement le montrer dans une société.
Et du coup, le côté control avec la touche du clavier CTRL on montre, comme sur l’internet, ce qu’on veut. On choisit l’image qu’on veut avoir ou pas. Est-ce qu’on lève le voile ? Est-ce qu’on se ferme ?
Tout ça est à porter des doigts et dans notre vie de tous les jours c’est pareil. C’est vraiment ce rapport entre montrer les émotions ou ne pas les montrer. Garder le control ou pas. Des fois oui, des fois non. Il n’y a pas de morale dans le sens où il faudra absolument montrer nos émotions ou il ne faut pas. C’est juste un cheminement qui se construit au fur et à mesure.
Tu crées des vêtements. Tu t’implique beaucoup dans les créations de votre merchandising « hand made by Jen ». Et tu as l’intention de créer ta propre ligne des vêtements. Est-ce que tu peux nous en dire plus ?
Jennifer : En fait, les tenues que je porte dans les clips, par exemple ma combinaison lacérée, c’est moi qui l’ai faite. Je crée des tenus de scènes pour d’autre artistes.
Effectivement, c’est quelque chose que j’aimerai développer plus donc j’ai pour objectif, que je retarde à chaque fois mais ça reste toujours un objectif, de lancer ma ligne de vêtements.
Pas forcément que de vêtements de scène mais aussi des T-shirts de seconde main à qui on pourra leur donner une deuxième vie. Pour moi, c’est important effectivement de toujours donner ce côté rock, une touche rock à un vêtement. En plus si je peux le faire avec des objets, des vêtements de seconde main c’est encore mieux.
Quels sont les 3 vêtements préférés dans ta garde-robe ?
Jennifer : Je suis un grand fan de bodies, je n’aime pas avoir les reins à l’air. Ma tenue de scène c’est comme un pyjama pour moi. C’est peut-être parce que c’est moi qui l’ai créé mais je m’y sens tellement bien. Et puis, mon perfecto que je porte aujourd’hui. Je le mets dans les clips mais aussi tous les jours. C’est vrai que je l’adore, je le trouve bien taillé.
Dans le clip de Synapses tu fais un petit clin d’œil à Edith Piaff ? Elle est une de tes inspirations ?
Jennifer : Oui, absolument. Edith Piaf je pourrais la regarder, l’entendre parler, chanter à l’infini… elle incarne quelque chose tellement authentique et je comprends pourquoi elle est tellement inspirante. Elle a cette personnalité, elle dégage quelque chose d’unique.
Et c’est vrai que si on voulait montrer qu’on est français dans ce morceau autant le faire à fond. On voulait faire un petit clin d’œil avec Padam Padam d’une façon un peu moderne.
Ça s’est fait naturellement. Et à l’international vue qu’elle est connue partout, je pense que si quelqu’un entend Padam Padam va savoir toute de suite que c’est la France et c’est Edith Piaf.
Un groupe que tu écoutes en ce moment ?
Jennifer : J’écoute le groupe SOEN, je suis grand fan. Et je pars avec eux en tournée en tant que merchandiseur. En fait, à côté de la musique, je pars avec des groupes en tournée et je vends leur merchandising. Et donc pour le côté fashion, je propose aux groupes de customiser leur T-shirts. Et ça en général les groupes aiment bien car ça leur donne un truc en plus.
Sinon j’écoute aussi un groupe de métal progressif norvégien qui s’appelle Leprous.

Vous avez fait quelques concerts récemment, comment ça s’est passée le retour sur scène ?
Jennifer : Oui, c’était en Suisse fin octobre. Je n’ai pas réalisé jusqu’à 5 minutes avant de monter sur scène, donc j’ai fini de me préparer et d’un coup je commence à me sentir paniquée un peu. Je me dis waouh, il s’est passé tellement des temps depuis le dernier concert.
Et ces gens-là, il y a tellement qui n’ont pas vu des concerts depuis longtemps et nous, on va être les premiers. En fait, je me mettais la pression. Et j’étais tellement émotionnelle par rapport à ça que j’ai eu un petit moment de panique.
Je suis monté sur scène et ma main tremblait. Je chantais et j’avais ma main qui tremblais au point que à la fin du morceau, on a arrêté et j’ai dit au public, vous voyez, je ne peux rien faire, ma main elle tremble toute seule.
Tout le monde souriez, tout le monde était bienveillant. Ils voyaient que je n’avais pas peur, j’étais juste tellement submergée d’émotion de pouvoir être là, d’avoir la chance de pouvoir rejouer sur scène devant tellement de monde que c’était beaucoup pour moi.
Il m’a fallu deux morceaux pour me dire, ok c’est réel, il faut que je sois confiante. Ça va bien se passer. De toute façon, je n’avais aucun doute sur le fait que ça va bien se passer mais j’étais tellement heureuse que s’était presque trop. Mais après ça allait un tout petit mieux.
C’était le bonheur de voir tous les gens comme ça. Les gens était debout, un retour à la normale. Ça fait un bien fou. Et puis voir les gens qui chantent, qui ont appris les paroles pendant la pandémie parce qu’effectivement, on n’avait pas joué depuis presque 2 ans et entre temps les gens ont écouté l’album.
Il y a des gens qui nous ont découvert pendant la pandémie sur You Tube et ils venaient nous voir pour la première fois et ils chantaient les paroles. Oh lalala ça fait une bien fou. Et puis pendant qu’on joue on se regarde parfois avec les autres et pour moi, c’est tellement plaisant quand je regarde les autres et que je les vois heureux sur scène. Il y a un truc qui se passe, l’échange avec le public et avec le groupe ça a fait un bien fou. C’était vraiment génial. J’ai juste hâte au prochain.
Il y a des dates prévues déjà pour 2022 mais est-ce que tu as un endroit où tu aimeras jouer cette pour cette tournée ?
Jennifer : Forcement, je rêve jouer un jour au Hellfest et au Wachen mais honnêtement, je voulais jouer dans le plus de pays possible. Je suis tellement curieuse de toutes les cultures, tous les types de public. En Mars, on va avoir notre première tournée en tête d’affiche.
D’habitude, on faisait du support pour d’autres groupes et là on va avoir notre première tournée européenne en headliner qui va durer 3 semaines. Il y aura donc France, l’Italie, l’Espagne, la Belgique, l’Allemagne mais oui j’aimerai faire toute l’Europe, tout le monde.
Mon plus grand souhait sera d’être sur la route 200 jours par an, là je serais la plus heureuse du monde.
Un dernier mot
Jennifer : On dit toujours que nul n’est prophète dans son pays et c’est vrai que nous avec la France, au tout début on n’a pas communiqué beaucoup avec les français.
Vu que notre label est allemand (ndlr DARKTUNES Music Group), on a plus communiqué avec Allemagne. Et c’est peut-être une erreur qu’on avait faite, je ne sais pas, du coup maintenant ce que j’aimerais c’est que le public français nous connaît plus et qu’on échange plus avec eux, qu’on tourne un peu plus en France.
Et j’espère que le public français est encore là après la pandémie. Qu’il sera là quand il y aura des concerts que ça soit pour nous ou tout autre groupe.
J’espère que la culture et l’industrie musicale va battre son plein encore plus qu’avant et j’espère vous trouver tous aux concerts.

Last November, the French modern metal band DUST IN MIND released their 4th album entitled CTRL. I had the great pleasure to meet in Paris, the adorable Jennifer GERVAIS who is not only an incredible singer but also a talented clothes designer. We talked about the band, the album, shooting on the Eiffel Tower, their comeback to the stage and of course about fashion. Check out the interview!
How did you meet and formed Dust in Mind?
Jennifer: That was in 2013. Damien the guitarist, the singer and the songwriter of the band had an idea to set up an industrial metal with electronic samples project with a female singer.
We were long-time friends and he asked me if I would like to sing, give it a try. And I said with great pleasure. I had never had a band before. I’ve never sung before. I have never taken singing lessons in my life but I would like to do it one day.
Damien knew I was singing but you know as we say… in the shower, not at all in public. I was extremely shy. It was always a dream but it was too far for me. At the same time, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into.
Luckily Damien is a person who really pushes people and I’m very happy that he pushed me out of my comfort zone.
And gradually, I got there. And then we recorded our first EP and when we saw the result we thought, in fact, that it would deserve not to be just a studio project. It would deserve to be a real band and make it a live band.
So, we started looking for musicians to be able to set up a band. There was a bit of a line-up change at the beginning but now, we have a super stable team, very united. Damian takes care of everything that is musical composition, singing, guitar and me, I write the lyrics and I sing.
Where does the name Dust In Mind come from?
Jennifer: In fact, the expression Dust In Mind brings together everything we keep in us. Everything that has been burned but that we have externalized and Dust in Mind is really what we keep, what always remains there somewhere in a corner of our head and that is close to our hearts.
It’s pretty basic but it really looks like everything we have in constant noise in our heads.

CRTL is your 4th album. How was the writing of this album?
Jennifer: We released the last album (From Ashes to Flame in 2018) and it was barely out that Damien had already started composing songs for CTRL. So, the writing started a long time ago, but it’s true that during the pandemic, it slowed down and especially because of me.
Damien had composed several tracks and I had what is called the syndrome of the blank page. I had a small blockage during the Covid lockdown.
I had a million things to say but it wasn’t coming out. So, it took a lot of delay but at the same time, if I could not externalize, it was that maybe that it had to happen like that.
In the end, it took longer but the composition process was really done as it went along. It didn’t happen all at once, it took more than 2 years but it allowed me to mature my ideas, my lyrics and it also allowed Damien to really work on the sound, add small details left and right, to really build and elaborate the songs in detail. So, in the end, it took a little longer but it’s very good like that.
Lyrics are talking a lot about the isolation, confinement.
Jennifer: Yes, absolutely. Usually, I don’t have trouble talking but here I think I was stuck, locked up. I had a lot of things to say but I couldn’t write them.
And overnight, it came back but just because I talked about another theme and in the end, it unlocked everything. The covid period in terms of lyrics writing, it was not the best period.
But it allowed us to work more on other things and specially to make video clips for example. Rather than suffering the covid, we said to ourselves we must not sit there with folded arms waiting for it to happen, we must turn it into an “opportunity” and we take the time to make the video clips and all that we did not really have time to achieve 100%. We really optimized all the time we had to be able to do other things.
Talking about video clips, they are really beautiful. It’s impressive you never do the same thing – it’s always in a different place – by the sea, in the desert, an abandoned warehouse and you even filmed on the Eiffel Tower. How was this shooting?
Jennifer: It was crazy! In fact, we saw the video of the rappers PNL on the Eiffel Tower and when we saw it, we thought it’s possible … If they did, we will be able to do it too. We’re going to take some risks; we’re going to move to make it work.
I sent an email and wrote down again with my guts what I thought and what we wanted. We wanted to show to the world that we are French, to promote this image.
And they called me back a few hours later. They asked me if we have a budget and I said no, we are poor. I expected that I would be asked for a huge amount of money. I told them that we are an association, we do not have funds.
And they said Ok, it’s okay you just pay a few minimal filming fees. It was the same as we were shooting in the restaurant next to us.
And they told me it’s next week, this or that day before the opening of the Eiffel Tower and you have 1 hour. So actually, we had to go up in the elevator all the equipment, we had to build the battery, we had to mount the video equipment, the lights, everything and then we had to disassemble everything and go down. All this in 1 hour.
So, finally we shot at the top on the Eiffel Tower maybe 15 minutes, what you see in the video it’s the raw image, everything we did there. It happened so fast as we almost didn’t understand what happened. It was crazy! we didn’t really realize for ourselves what happened. We said to ourselves this is an opportunity, we can’t miss it, we work hard.
Ok, there is a beautiful view but there we are not going to look at the view, we will just work. And in fact, we arrived downstairs and we were told, 1 hour has passed, you have to leave so we had to get our van out of the area.
So, we left, we did 100 meters and we stopped and we all exploded of joy, laughing and we said guys we just been on the Eiffel Tower, we are the first metal rock band to shoot on the Eiffel Tower.
And we all got out of the van, and we were all sweating, dripping, and we hugged each other… Just talking about it…. It was crazy… because we did not realize what fell under us and again after it is when we watched the images that again we said to ourselves ok that’s real. We didn’t dream, we did it! It was an opportunity, an incredible opportunity and I think the accomplishment of the band Dust in Mind, THE greatest thing we’ve ever done.
It’s really a great video and the inside images are beautiful also. Where did you film?
Jennifer: We filmed at Strasbourg City Hall. It’s true that it’s a bit of a Parisian building too, a bit like Chateau de Versailles. That’s really what we wanted to give, the French touch 100% and we were also happy to be able to shoot images of our city, Strasbourg.
Do you have a favourite song on the album?
Jennifer: I love Lost Control. For me this song is precious, because it really sums up all this emotional side that I feel very strongly. It is very important. But there is a song that released I the same time with the album and with the video called Empty. It is a song where it is Damien who sings the chorus and for me, it is super powerful. I find that it changes. The fact that it’s him who sings the chorus, not always me and I think he did a great job. I feel the emotion he meant and I think it’s my favourite song…
You collaborated with Sylvain Hélaine alias Freaky Hoody, the most tattooed man in France, for a video clips and also for the cover of the album. How did you meet him?
Jennifer: We watched on Facebook all his videos where he was talking about his situation, you heard maybe his story. He is a teacher and that there was a parent of a student who complained about his appearance.
His story really touched us a lot because we are a band that defends a lot of any identity, any type of differences, whether it is origin, skin colour, religion, sexual orientation, tattoo or no tattoo.
His story is interesting and in addition he, physically, he is impressive. It marks the spirits.
It can be scary sometimes but at least it has the merit of releasing something.
Actually, we sent him an email about a collaboration and he answered yes, I come to shoot the clip. Everything went really well. He is super nice. So finally, we have an idea for the cover, so we asked him if we can do the photo.
It was not planned but he said yes with great pleasure. So, he found himself on the cover of the album. He performed very well in the video; he brought a lot of ideas. It is very interesting.
The album name, CTRL, what does it mean?
Jennifer: Basically, the song Lost Control is very important because it gives a guideline to the album. The overall theme of the album is letting go. Letting go and what we are showing to the others as emotion.
For example, I like to feel the true, strong and passionate things in my life in general. I don’t like conversations like wow, the weather is nice, etc… I like to go into very deep things and in fact, my whole life is related to that. I am a very whole person and sometimes, it is a defect also because I feel things so much that it handicaps me or I will suffer from it.
You know, there is this feeling that we have sometimes, like feeling imprisoned because we feel things too strongly and we cannot necessarily show it in our society.
And actually, we have the control with the CTRL keyboard key. We can show what we want. We choose the image we want to have or not. Are we lifting the veil? Or do we close it?
All this is to be worn with fingers and in our everyday life it is the same. It’s really this relationship between showing emotions or not showing them. Keep control or not. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Basically, that’s it. There is no morality in the sense that we absolutely have to show our emotions or we do not have to. It’s just a journey that is built up as you go along.
You create clothes. You are very involved in the creations of band merchandising with logo “handmade by Jen”. And you are planning to create your own clothing line. Can you tell us more?
Jennifer: Actually, the outfits I wear in the video clips, for example, the lacerated jumpsuit that I wear in videos, I made it by myself.
I create also stage outfits for other artists. Indeed, it is something that I would like to develop more so I have the goal, that I delay each time but it is always a goal to launch my clothing line. Not necessarily only stage clothes but also second-hand T-Shirts to which we can give a second life. For me, it is important to always give this a rock touch. And, if I can do it with objects, second-hand clothes, it’s even better.
What are the 3 favourite clothes in your wardrobe right now?
Jennifer: I’m a big fan of bodies, I don’t like to have cold at kidneys. My stage outfit is like pyjamas for me, maybe it’s because I created it and I feel so good and my leather perfecto that I wear today. I wear it in the videos but I also wear it every day. I love it, it’s very well shaped.
In the clip of Synapses, you make a little nod to Edith Piaf? Is she one of your inspirations?
Jennifer: Yes, absolutely. Edith Piaf, I can watch her, hear her speak and sing endlessly … she embodies something so authentic and I understand why she is so inspiring. She has this personality; she exudes something unique. And it’s true that if we wanted to show that we are French in this song, we might as well do it thoroughly. So, we sang this padam padam in a modern way. It just happened naturally.
Edith Piaf is known internationally and if anyone hears padam padam, they will know right away that it is France and it is Edith Piaf.

A band you’re listening to right now?
Jennifer: I listen to the SOEN, I’m a big fan. And I go on tour with them as a merchandiser. In fact, in parallel with music I go with bands on tour and sell their merchandising. And for the fashion side, I propose to bands to customize their T-shirts. And in general, they like it, because it gives them something extra.
You’ve done a few shows recently, how was it back on stage?
Jennifer: Yes, it was in Switzerland at the end of October and I felt a bit of panic.
I didn’t realize until 5 minutes before going on stage when I finish preparing and suddenly, I start to feel panicked a little. So much time has passed since we played last time on stage.
And these people, there are so many who have not seen concerts for a long time and we will be the first they see. In fact, I put some pressure on myself. And I was so emotional about it that I had a little moment of panic. I went on stage and my hand was shaking. I was singing and I had my hand shaking to the point that at the end of the song, we stopped and I said to the audience, you see, I can’t do anything, my hand is shaking on its own.
Everyone smiled, everyone was benevolent. They saw that I wasn’t afraid, I was just so overwhelmed with emotion to be able to be there, to have the chance to play on stage again in front of so many people that it was a lot for me.
It took me two songs to tell myself, ok it’s real, I have to be confident. It’s going to be fine. Anyway, I had no doubt that it will go well but I was so happy that it was almost too much.
It was the joy of seeing all the people like that. People were standing, singing. A comeback to normal life is crazy good. People learned the lyrics during the pandemic because actually we had not played for almost 2 years and in the meantime, people listened to the album.
There are people who discovered us during the pandemic on You Tube and they were coming to see us for the first time and they were singing the lyrics. it’s incredibly good.
And then while we play, we sometimes look at each other on stage and it’s so pleasant when I look at the guys and I see them happy on stage. There’s something going on, the exchange with the audience and with the band it did a lot of good. It was really great. I’m just looking forward to the next one.
There are dates already planned for 2022. Do you have a place where you will like to play this for this tour?
Jennifer: For sure, I’m dreaming of one day to play at Hellfest and Wachen but honestly, I would like to play in as many countries as possible. I’m so curious about all cultures, all types of audiences.
In March, we’re going to have our first headline tour, headliner. Usually, we did support for other bands and there we will have our first European tour in headliner which will last 3 weeks and we will play in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany but I would like to play in all Europe.
My biggest wish would be to be on the road 200 days a year, there I would be the happiest in the world.
A last word
Jennifer: We always say no one is a prophet in his country and it is true for us with France. At the very beginning, we did not communicate much with the French fans. Since our label is German (DARKTUNES Music Group), we communicated more with Germany.
And maybe it’s a mistake we made, I don’t know, so now what I would like is that the French audience knows us more and that we exchange more with them, that we tour a little more in France.
I hope that the French audience is still there after the pandemic, it will be there when there are concerts whether it is for us or any other band. I hope that the culture and the music industry will be in full swing even more than before and I hope to find you all at the concerts.
