Vous avez peut-être remarqué que le 22 mai 2021, à l’Eurovision, le rock a triomphé. Pas seulement grâce aux grands gagnants, le groupe italien Maneskin, mais aussi grâce à l’excellente 6 ème place obtenue par le groupe Finlandais, BLIND CHANNEL et leur chanson Dark Side.
Ce n’est pas la première fois que la Finlande est représentée par un groupe rock. Souvenez-vous, 2006, les monstres de Lordi créaient la surprise en remportant le Grand Prix de l’Eurovision avec leur hymne “Hard Rock Hallelujah”.
BLIND CHANNEL a donc porté avec fierté les couleurs de son pays et du rock lors de la 65ème édition du fameux concours qui s’est déroulé à Rotterdam au Pays Bas.
Le jeune groupe formé par Joel Hokka (chant & guitare), Niko Vilhelm (chant), Joonas Porko (guitare), Olli Matela (basse), Tommi Lalli (batterie), Aleksi Kaunisvesi (claviers) a déjà 3 albums à son active “Revolutions” (2016), “Blood Brothers” (2018), “Violent Pop” (2020). Suite à son passage à l’Eurovision le titre Dark Side enregistre de chiffres impressionnants : 29 millions streams sur Spotify et 4,5 millions vues sur You Tube.
Leur nombre d’auditeurs mensuel sur Spotify est passé de 550 000 à presque 2 millions aujourd’hui et le nombre de followers sur Instagram est passé de 32 000 à 158 000 abonnés. Et ça continue à grimper.
J’ai eu le grand plaisir de discuter via Skype avec le chanteur et guitariste Joel Hokka. On a parlé évidement de Dark Side et de l’Eurovision mais aussi de l’héritage musical finlandais, de leurs futurs projets, de leur influences, de la reprise d’Anastasia, de fashion style et de plein d’autre choses.
Comment ça va Joel ?
Joel : ça va bien, merci. Je viens de faire un nouveau tatouage. Ça va être prêt dans une semaine.
Où es-tu situé en Finlande ?
Joel : Je suis à Helsinki. Une partie du groupe est à Oulu dans le nord de la Finlande. C’est là où se trouvent nos racines. Mais on est quasiment tout le temps à Helsinki. On est assez occupés en ce moment car on a 14 festivals en Finlande cette été, donc on doit répéter dans le studio. Et aussi, on est en train d’écrire et d’enregistrer l’album numéro 4. On est débordé, mais c’est sûr que j’ai le temps de parler avec des gens formidables.
Commençons par une courte présentation de Blind Channel. Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrés ?
Joel : On était tous au lycée en 2013. On était de adolescents et on avait une idée : former un groupe qui fera une percée internationale, un peu comme au début des années 2000 quand Il y a eu énormément de groupes qui ont vraiment décollés d’une manière importante en Finlande. Des groupes comme The Rasmus et Nightwish. On voulait donc faire la même chose. On ne voulait pas réussir seulement en Finlande, mais partout dans le monde. C’est ainsi que nous avons eu l’idée de Blind Channel. On avait aussi une vision sur notre propre style de musique qu’on voulait jouer et écrire.
L’année dernière, vous avez sorti votre 3e album, Violent Pop. Vous n’avez pas encore eu l’occasion de tourner pour cet album.
Joel : Non, on ne l’a pas fait. C’était frustrant parce que nous avions de grands projets pour la tournée… mais maintenant tout est plutôt cool parce que nous avons beaucoup de nouveau public. Notre chanson Dark Side a carrément décollé et je pense que grâce à ça l’album numéro 4 sera connu dans le monde entier.
Effectivement, Félicitations pour la 6ème place obtenue à l’Eurovision avec Dark Side. Comment te sens-tu ? Tu es content du résultat ?
Joel : Notre mission était d’entrer dans le Top 10 parce que si on avait gagné cette compétition, on aurait été LE groupe de l’Eurovision pour toujours. Ça nous aurait colle à la peau. Et cette 6ème place est assez bien si on pense qu’il y avait 40 pays. Je dirais que pour nous, l’Eurovision a été comme un rêve devenu réalité. On ne voulait vraiment pas gagner mais on ne voulait pas être parmi les derniers non plus. Donc, ça s’est plutôt bien passé.
On a beaucoup de nouveaux fans, on a eu une grande expérience et on a signé un contrat international avec Century Media Records / Sony music.
Comment vous avez eu l’idée de participer à l’Eurovision ? Avez-vous écrit Dark Side spécialement pour l’Eurovision ou vous aviez déjà cette chanson ?
Joel : On avait écrit cette chanson en mars 2020, lorsque le confinement a commencé. On était tellement frustrés et on avait besoin de trouver un moyen pour nous en sortir. On ne voulait pas simplement rester dans notre studio et essayer de comprendre ce qu’on va faire. Je dirais qu’on a écrit Dark Side accidentellement. On a canalisé toute la frustration qu’on avait à ce moment-là dans cette chanson.
Ensuite, on a entendu que la société de radiodiffusion finlandaise cherchait un groupe de rock plus heavy pour participer à l’UMK, qui est la finale nationale en Finlande pour l’Eurovision.
Alors, on s’est dit, ok maintenant on a 2 options. L’option numéro 1 est d’attendre que la pandémie passe, ce qui prendra probablement une année de plus et ce n’était pas une bonne idée. Ou on prend l’opportunité numéro 2 et on y participe, car on nous a demandé en quelque sorte de faire partie de l’UMK Eurovision. Et on a été tous d’accord pour se lancer.
J’ai 27 ans maintenant, les gars sont un peu plus jeunes, on est encore assez jeunes et on a le meilleur groupe du monde, on a une chanson assez forte qui n’a pas été écrite pour l’Eurovision mais qui était plutôt bien si vous pensez au concept de l’Eurovision… c’était comme une sorte de rébellion contre tout avec cette main avec le majeur, le club des 27, les cris et les guitares puissantes.
On a senti que nous allons être les outsiders et mais aussi les rebelles de toute la compétition. Et tout s’est plutôt bien passé… on avait l’image sombre, des vêtements assez cool, tout s’allait bien. Cela nous a donné l’occasion de faire une plus grande percée dans le mainstream et aussi dans la scène musicale alternative.

Comment s’est déroulée la compétition à Rotterdam ?
Joel : C’était une expérience cool surement. Si on pense avec du recul, Il y a eu beaucoup de pression tout le temps. C’était assez effrayant parce qu’il y avait un risque énorme d’être un échec : si on n’allait pas en finale ou on allait en finale mais on sera classés parmi les derniers.
Mais quand on était là, on a pensé juste à notre show. On ne pouvait pas penser au résultat parce que nous serions devenus fous. Après, je dois dire grâce à Dieu que c’est fini et grâce à Dieu, nous avons des concerts devant nous et des choses cool qui se passent. Il n’y a plus le monstre effrayant de l’Eurovision.
Le show a été super et le public a été super mais la compétition a été quelque chose qu’on n’a pas apprécié. On doit être reconnaissants d’être dans le top dix. C’est en fait l’une des principales raisons pour lesquelles on est là maintenait. Pour profiter du succès qu’on a eu.
Dark Side a placé la barre très haut. Il y a des millions de streams sur Spotify ou You Tube… c’est assez impressionnant… est-ce cela vous met la pression pour le prochain album ? Pensez-vous que les attentes des fans sont plus grandes maintenant ?
Joel : C’est sûr que Dark Side sera à jamais l’une de nos plus grandes chansons. Probablement, la plus grande. Si les singles suivants atteignaient les 10 millions de streams, je serais heureux.
Je sais que Dark Side et l’Eurovision ont été le pic dans notre carrière jusqu’à présent. On doit comprendre qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup d’événements dans le monde comme l’Eurovision… si vous pensez que 200 millions de personnes dans le monde ont regardé à la télévision et que tout le monde est allé streamer les chansons ensuite. Si on essaie de répéter cela avec nos propres ailes, c’est assez difficile.
Si on arrive à s’approcher un peu de Dark Side avec les prochaines chansons, je serai assez heureux parce que c’est vraiment difficile après cela. Mais ce n’est pas grave pour moi, car maintenant, on a les followers, on a les fans. Certaines personnes nous disent qu’on sera le groupe à un seul hit merveilleux. Mais j’aimera leur dire au moins nous avons un hit, vous avez zéro.
Vous avez eu un artiste préféré dans la compétition ?
Joel : C’est sûr que nous avons eu une bonne conversation avec Maneskin d’Italie, les gagnants. On avait un peu la même mission de ramener le rock en mainstream. On partageait le même point de vue et donc on s’est soutenu les uns les autres. En ce moment, Maneskin devient si grand qu’on a l’impression qu’ils vont être les prochains One Direction.
De notre côté, on préfère rester dans la scène musicale alternative qui est un endroit plus sûr pour nous. Je veux dire si on passe au niveau pop supérieur, je pense que ça sera trop chaud pour nous. Si on reste dans la scène musicale heavy alternative est plus sûr. On n’a plus la pression de la chanson à succès.
Et pour répondre à ta question, la chanson d’Ukraine GO_A (Shum) était l’une de nos préférés parce que c’était quelque chose d’unique. Si vous pensez à la musique pop standard aujourd’hui, ce n’était pas comme ça, c’était différent, quelque chose d’assez unique.
Votre musique est un mélange de rock, de métal, de hip hop, quelles sont les influences dans le groupe ?
Joel : Tout a commencé avec Linkin Park et c’est facile à entendre si vous écoutez notre musique. Ils sont, disons, nos racines. En même temps, on aime aussi la scène metalcore : Bring Me the Horizon et Asking Alexandria et mais aussi le rock des années 2000.
Donc, le heavy metal sont nos racines. On a aussi beaucoup d’influences de la musique pop et rap et comme je disais notre mission est de faire quelque chose d’unique. On aime aussi la musique pop comme Billie Eilish ou Post Malone.
Si on pense au rock des années 2020, cela ne peut pas être le même que celui des années 2003 ou 2004. On peut avoir les influences des année 2000 mais il faut rafraîchir pour susciter l’intérêt des nouvelles générations. Nous voulons rafraîchir la scène musicale heavy. C’est notre mission !
Vous avez fait l’année dernière la reprise de Left Outside Alone d’Anastasia qui a un grand succès et que personnellement j’aime beaucoup. Comment vous avez eu l’idée de faire cette reprise ?
Joel : Eh bien, j’avais un peu bu avec Joonas, notre guitariste, et on improvisait sur des playlist Spotify avec des chansons à succès du début 2000. J’étais tellement frustré à l’époque, je pensais que tous mes rêves s’écroulent, je me demandais ce qu’on va faire… on ne peut pas partir en tournée, on a aucun projet … des trucs comme ça… Et puis il y a eu cette chanson, Left Outside Alone qui a commencé à jouer et j’ai été frappé par les paroles. Je m’y suis identifié.
Car j’avais l’impression d’être abandonné, seul avec mes rêves, que tout est si froid et rien ne fonctionne comme je voulais. J’ai donc eu l’idée de faire la reprise de cette chanson. J’ai appelé les gars le lendemain, donc après la gueule de bois et leur ai dit que j’aime toujours l’idée de cette reprise même si je n’étais plus ivre.
Mais ils étaient un peu sceptiques et ils m’ont demandé de faire une démo. Je suis donc allé au studio, j’ai enregistré les riffs de guitare et ma voix et j’ai fait la batterie. Je leur ai envoyé et ils étaient comme Waouh !!!
Et puis, on a réservé le studio et on a fait la vidéo. C’était plutôt cool d’avoir fait Left Outside Alone avant Dark Side. C’est comme notre chanson de support. Elle réunit déjà plus de 2 millions vues sur You Tube et 4-5 millions streams sur Spotify, donc on ne ressemble plus au groupe à une seule chanson.
Vous étiez tous vêtus de noir pour la performance à l’Eurovision. Comment avez-vous choisi vos tenues ?
Joel : Si on pense au titre de la chanson Dark Side, le nom lui-même nous dit qu’on ne peut rien porter d’autre que du noir. C’est sûr, à l’Eurovision, tout est plutôt coloré et brillant avec de strass et des paillettes.
En fait, on a pensé à l’héritage musical finlandais : il y a des groupes de métal et de rock et de la musique pop sombre, donc nous devons rester humbles aux racines et on doit être nous-mêmes. On doit représenter la Finlande. Si vous pensez à la Suède, c’est plus ABBA, Roxette et Avicii. C’est de la pop et de la dance music avec de beaux vêtements brillants et des trucs comme ça.
Mais qu’est-ce que la Finlande ? C’est Ville Valo et Nightwish. Tout est si sombre, il y a des loups et le ciel du nord et aussi, il y a Kimi Raikkonen qui est peut-être le gars le plus froid de la planète. C’est image qu’on a de la Finlande.
Et on devrait trouver comment on peut avoir « le look » Finlande d’une manière musicale. Donc c’est sûr qu’on avait la chanson la plus heavy et c’est sûr que les vêtements noirs, les eye-liners noirs et pour moi les cheveux blonds et la peau pâle, ça marche. Ça vous rappelle quelque chose et c’est notre héritage musical reconnaissable dans le monde entier.
Et ton style personnel au quotidien, à l’exception des tatouages, qu’aime tu porter ?
Joel : En ce moment j’aime les tank tops. Il fait tellement chaud qu’il n’y a rien d’autre que je puisse porter. J’aime aussi les jeans skinny et les chaussures blanches… les vestes en cuir, des trucs basiques.
On ne se prend pas la tête pour les looks de tous les jours mais pour les shootings ou les concerts on a nos tenues spéciales.
Tu as une fashion icon ?
Joel : Oui, ça a toujours été Oliver Sykes. J’aime beaucoup son style. Il est une icône en quelque sorte pour moi et pour la génération de groupes modernes de heavy metal. J’aime beaucoup la façon dont il s’habille et j’adore ses tatouages. Et j’aime aussi Ville Valo parce qu’il est comme une légende en Finlande et dans le monde entier. J’aime son style sombre. Et aussi Ghostemane, le rappeur américain. La main noire que j’avais à l’Eurovision a été inspirée par Ghostemane et sa chanson Venom.
Ton premier souvenir musical ?
Joel : Je dois dire que j’en ai deux, mais je ne me souviens pas lequel était le premier. L’un est quand j’ai entendu pour la première fois Bomfunk Mc’s – Freestyler qui est je pense la première grande chanson finlandaise à succès international de tous les temps. C’était le numéro un partout.
Je pense que tout le monde connaît cette chanson, elle était tellement populaire. Je l’ai entendu à la radio et j’ai trouvé ça cool. Et en même temps, il y avait le break dance. Tout le monde avait commencé à faire du break dance début 2000. J’avais 6 ans et j’ai commencé à en faire aussi mais j’ai arrêté, je ne sais plus pourquoi.
Et le deuxième était probablement quand j’ai vu Linkin Park In the End à la télévision. J’étais en première année à l’école et je me souviens, je suis rentré de l’école et je regardais la télévision, il y avait un vidéo clip et la voix de Chester Bennington dans le refrain a attiré mon attention. C’est la voix que j’aime. J’ai demandé toute de suite à ma mère d’acheter Hybrid Theory pour moi et elle l’a fait. Cet album était numéro un en Finlande à l’époque. Linkin Park était comme le plus grand groupe du monde à ce moment-là.
Qu’aimes-tu faire à part la musique ?
Joel : En ce moment, j’essaie de garder mes idées en place allongé sur le sol ou dans mon lit… mais j’aime aussi faire du mountain bike. C’est comme ça que repose mon cerveau si je ne bois pas de la bière. Il est préférable de faire du vélo que boire de la bière, mais vous devez faire les deux pour garder la tête froide.
Avez-vous déjà prévu de venir en France et dans le reste de l’Europe ?
Joel : On a plusieurs projets pour l’année prochaine. En ce moment, on a planifié une tournée importante pour début 2022, mais c’est sûr qu’à cause du Covid, on ne peut pas être surs si cela va se réaliser ou pas. Sinon, on a un autre projet pour l’été et pour l’automne 2022. On a vraiment beaucoup de fans qui nous attendent, donc il faut visiter la France et toute l’Europe l’année prochaine.
Je vais tout faire pour que cela se produise. J’ai dit sur mes réseaux sociaux que si on n’arrive pas avoir la tournée ou les festivals, je vais venir là-bas avec les gars et les guitares acoustiques et on va jouer dans les rues. S’il est trop difficile d’organiser des concerts, on vient par nous-même. Parce que ce sont vraiment des moments que nous ne voulons pas manquer dans nos vies. Mais voyons d’abord comment cela se passe avec la tournée.
Un dernier mot pour nos lecteurs en France ?
Joel : Je ne suis jamais allé en France, mais j’ai beaucoup entendu parler de votre pays et je pense que c’est cool donc j’ai vraiment hâte de venir là-bas et de visiter toutes les belles villes, et parler aux gens sympas. Et manger ces longs pains, je ne sais pas comment vous les appelez…

Joel : Ouais, manger des baguettes et boire du vin rouge sur la Tour de l’Eifel… c’est ma vision de la France. C’est assez stéréotypé, mais je veux le faire et j’ai vraiment hâte de le faire. Et aussi, je me souviens que l’une des premières grandes Playlist Spotify internationales dans lesquels on a figuré il y a environ 5 ans venait de France. Je me souviens que l’editor de cette playlist adorait notre premier album.
Il a été le premier qui nous a trouvé, donc on doit être reconnaissants à la France pour toujours car c’est grâce à cette playlist que nous avons attiré l’attention à international.

This is not the first time that Finland has been represented by a rock band in this is famous competition. Remember, in 2006, Lordi’s monsters created a surprise by winning the Eurovision Grand Prix with their anthem “Hard Rock Hallelujah”.

I had the great pleasure to talk via Skype with the singer and guitarist Joel Hokka. We obviously talked about Dark Side and Eurovision, but also about their influences, the Finnish musical legacy, fashion style, Anastasia’s cover, their future projects and many other things.
How are you, Joel?
Joel: Good. I just got a new tattoo. It’s going to be complete in one week.
Where are you located in Finland?
Joel: I am in Helsinki. Some of the guys are in OULU but we are basically all of us in Helsinki right now, because we have the rehearsals in the studio. Actually, most of the time we are in Helsinki but our roots are in Oulu which is in the northern part of Finland.
We are pretty busy now, we have 14 summer festivals in Finland, so we need to practice for them. We are also writing and recording the album number 4. We are overbooked but for sure but I have time to talk with great people.
Let’s start by a short presentation of Blind Channel. How did you guys meet?
Joel: We were in high school in 2013. We were all teenagers and we had an idea about forming a band that will make an international breakthrough, just like early 2000 in Finland. There were huge number of bands that really took off in a big way at the time. Bands like The Rasmus and Nightwish. So wanted to make the same thing.
We did not want only to make it big only in Finland, we wanted to make it big everywhere and that’s how we came up with the idea of Blind Channel. We also had a vision about our own kind of music that we want to perform and write.
Last year you release your 3rd album, Violent Pop. You did not get to opportunity to tour yet for this album
Joel: We didn’t. That was frustrating because we had big plans for the touring… but now everything is pretty cool because we have a lot of new audience. Our song Dark Side took off so well and I think because of this, the album number 4 will be even better-known all-over world.
Congratulations for the 6th place with Dark Side at Eurovision. How do you feel? Are you happy with this result?
Joel: Our mission was to get into Top 10 because if we would have won that competition, we would have been the Eurovision band forever. And this 6th place is pretty high from 40 countries. I would say that Eurovision was like a dream come true for us. We really did not want to win but we did not want to be in the last ones neither. So, it turned up pretty well for us. We’ve got a lot of new fans; we’ve got a great experience and we’ve got an international record deal with Century Media Records /Sony music.
How did you get the idea to participate to Eurovision? Did you write Dark Side especially for Eurovision or you had this song already?
Joel: We had this song already in March 2020 when the lockdown happened. We were so frustrated that we needed it to find a way to make it out. We did not want just stay in the rehearsal place and try to figure it out what we are going to do. We kind of accidentally wrote Dark Side. It was like a channelling to all the frustration that we had at that time. We put everything into in that song.
Then we heard that the Finish broadcasting company needed a heavier rock band to take part to the UMK which is the national finals in Finland for Eurovision. So, we thought, ok now we have 2 options. Option number one is wait for the pandemic to pass over which will probably will take one more year and it felt pretty not good idea. Or we had the opportunity number 2, to participate as we were kind of asked to be part of the UMK Eurovision. And we were all ok.
I am 27 now, the guys are bit younger but we are still pretty young and we have the best band in the world. We have a pretty strong song which was not written for Eurovision but it felt pretty good if you think of the Eurovision concept… it felt like a kind of rebellion against everything, we this middle finger, with the 27 club and the shouting and the loud guitars.
We just felt that we are going to be the underdogs and also the rebellions of the whole contest. And everything worked out well. We had the new image, everything was so dark, we had pretty cool clothes, everything fit out so well, so I think that in a way, we were the alternatives of the whole competition. It actually gave us the opportunity to make a bigger breakthrough in the mainstream way and also into the alternative music scene.

How was the competition in Rotterdam?
Joel: It was a cool experience for sure. If you think about afterwards, it was a lot of pressure all the time. It was pretty scary because there was a huge risk that it would have been like a failure like we wouldn’t go to the finals or we would get the last position in the final, so for sure it was a big risk.
But when we were there, we were just thinking about the performance and we couldn’t think about the result because we would have gone mad. Afterwards, I would have to say that that’s thanks God it’s over and thanks God we have shows ahead and things cool going on and there is not the scary Eurovision monster anymore.
So, I would say, the shows were great and the live audience was great but the competition thing that was something we did not enjoy. We have to be thankful that we got into the top ten. It is actually one of the main things why we are right now here enjoying the success we had.
Dark Side set the bar very high. There are millions of streams on Spotify or You Tube. it’s quite impressive … is it a pressure for you for now, for the future album? Do you think that the expectations from the fans are bigger now?
Joel : For sure, we know that Dark Side will be forever one of the biggest songs from us. Probably the biggest one. For sure, we know that if the follow up single would have like 10 million streams, I would be happy. I know that Dark Side and the Eurovision was at some point a pick in our career so far. We need to understand that there are not many events in the world like that. If you think that 200 millions people in the world were watching on TV and everyone will stream the songs.
If you try to repeat that with your own wings is pretty hard. But if we get even close to the Dark Side with the follow ups, I will be pretty happy because it’s really hard after that. But now got the followers, we got the fans, it does not matter to me… some people say that we are gonna be like one hit wonder. But at least we have 1 hit, you have 0.
Did you have a favourite performance in the competition?
Joel: For sure we had a good chat with Maneskin from Italy, the winners. We had same mission to bring rock music back to the mainstream. We had the same view and we are like supporting each other. Right now, Maneskin is getting so big that we feel like they are going be like the next One Direction.
We are going to stay into the alternative music scene which is safer place for us. I mean if we had gone to the top pop game it would have been too hot for us, but when we stay into the alternative heavier music scene is safer. We do not have the hit song pressure anymore.
If I am answering to your question Ukraine GO_A (Shum) was one of our favourites because it was a kind of unique as well. If you think to the regular pop music today, it wasn’t like that, it was something pretty unique. They had their own song. I understand why they succeed so well.
Your music is blending rock, metal, hip hop, what are the influences in the band?
Joel: For sure, It all started with Linkin Park which is easy to hear if you listen to our music. It’s a kind of root music for us. Wee the vibes. In the same time, we also like the metalcore scene like Bring me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria and also big rock band from the 2000.
So basically, the heavy music is our root but we also like pop music anything like Billie Eilish or Post Malone. We have a lot of influences from pop and rap music as well and our mission is to make something unique. If you think about the rock music in 2020s, it can’t be that same as it was in 2003 or in 2004. It can have the influences but you need to refresh to be interesting for the new generations. It really stands out from the pop music and the rock music scene. That’s our mission, we want to refresh the whole heavy music scene.
You did the last year the cover of Anastasia, Left Outside Alone that has a great success and I personally love it very much. How did you get the idea to cover this song?
Joel: Well, I got drunk together with Joonas, our guitarist and we were jamming those early 2000 hits on Spotify playlist. I was so frustrated at the time…I was thinking like all my dreams fall out, what I am going do, we cannot play any shows, we do not have anything ahead and stuff like that… And then there was this song, Left Outside Alone which started to play and I kind of felt the lyrics.
I was feeling like I am left outside alone, alone with my dreams; everything is so cold and nothing works out. So, I got this idea to do the cover of this song. I called the guys the next day, so after the hangover and told them I still love the idea about the cover even though I was not drunk anymore. But they said, well you have to do a demo because we can’t say yes. Then, I made it to the studio, I started recorded the guitar riffs and my vocals and I made the drums and I send it to the guys and they were like Holly Shit!!! And then we arranged the whole thing, we booked the studio and made the video.
Yeah, it was pretty cool that we have Left Outside Alone before Dark Side. Because it’s like the back catalogue. It’s already like 2 million in You tube and 4-5 million on Spotify, so we do not look like a one song band. We have that one big cover song also and it’s pretty cool.
You were all wearing black for Eurovision performance. How did you choose your outfits?
Joel: If you think about the song Dark Side, the name itself tells you that you cannot wear anything else then black. For sure, I think in the Eurovision way everything is coloured and happy. Everything is so bright and warm. We thought about the Finnish musical heritage, there is like metal and rock bands and some dark pop music, so we need to stay humbles to the roots and we need to be ourselves and we really need to represent Finland. What is Finland? If you think about Sweden is more like ABBA and Roxette and Avicii; it is like dance pop with some nice shiny clothes and stuff like that.
But what is Finland? It is Ville Valo and Nightwish. Everything is so dark. There are wolves and north sky and also Kimi Raikkonen who is like the coldest guy in the world, that the imagine you got from Finland. And we need to find out the way how we can look so Finland in a musical way. So, for sure we had the heavy music song. Then the black clothes and the dark eyeliners and for me blond hair and pale skin, it works out. It reminds you of something and that something is that Finnish musical heritage. Everybody knows around the world.
How about your personal style in everyday life? Except the great tattoos, what do you wear?
Joel: Well, mostly nowadays because is so hot I have these tank tops. I mostly wear skinny jeans, white shoes and leather jackets. Basic stuff.
We do not want to have too much pressure with the everyday looks but when we go to shootings or to play shows, we have the special clothes for that.
Do you have a fashion icon?
Joel: Yes, it has always been Oliver Sykes. I really like his style. He is an icon in some way for me and to the modern generation of metal musicians. I really like the way he dresses and I love his tattoos. And I also have to say Ville Valo because he is a legend in Finland and around the world. He is so dark; I like the way he is.
And I also the Ghostemane, the American rapper. The black hand that I had at Eurovision was inspired by Ghostemane and his song Venom.
What is you first musical memory?
Joel: I have to say that I have two but I do not remember which one was the first one. One is when I first heard Bomfunk Mc’s – Freestyler which was I think the first big international hit song from Finland ever. It was number one everywhere. I think everyone knows that song, it was so popular. I heard that on the radio and I found it so cool. And in the same time there were this break dance, everyone started to do break dans in early 2000. I was like 6 years old and I started to do it as well as a hobby but I quit it, I do not know why…
And the second one was probably when I saw Linkin Park – In the end on TV. I was in the first grade at school and I remember, I came home from the school and I was watching TV and I was ok, just look some music video and the Chester Bennington vocals were coming in in the chorus and I was like, ok this is something that I really feel. This is the voice that I love. I had to ask my mom to buy Hybrid Theory for me and she did it. It was number one in Finland at that time. Lynkin Park was like the biggest band in the world at that moment.
What do you like to do except Music?
Joel: Right now, lay on the floor or in my bed and try to keep my head together… I also ride with my mountain bike that’s how I clear up my brain if I am not drinking beer. It’s better to ride the bike then drink beer. You have to do both to keep your head together.
Do you have already plans to come in France, tour Europe?
Joel: We have multiple plans for next year. Right now, we have pretty strong plan for the early 22 but because of the Covid we cannot be sure if is going to happen or not. If not then we have another plan for the summer and for the fall. We really have a lot of fans there waiting for us, so we need to visit France and the whole Europe next year.
I am going to make everything to make it happen. I’ve been saying on my social media that if we do not get the tour or the festivals, I will come there with the guys with the acoustic guitars and play in the streets. If it is too hard to get organised shows, then we come be ourselves. Because this is like the moment we do not want to miss in our lives. But first let’s see how it turns out with the shows and festivals.
A final word for our readers in France?
Joel: I’ve never been in France but I heard a lot about your country that it’s pretty cool and I need to visit. I am really looking forward to come there and see all the nice cities and nice people and eat those long breads, I do not know how you call them…

Joel: Yeah, I need to eat those and drink red wine on the Eifel Tower…that’s my vision about France. it’s pretty stereotypical but I want to do that and I am really looking forward to do that.
And also, I remember that one of the first big international Spotify playlist we got like 5 years ago was from France. I remember that this one Spotify Editor, he really loved our music on the first album and he was like the first one he found us. so, we have to be thankful to France forever that we got some attention in the international way.
