Leurs idoles s’appellent The Beatles, David Bowie, The Who, The Clash, Oasis, The Stone Roses ou Sex Pistols et leurs chansons sont un pur concentré d’énergie et d’honnêteté, THE LUKA STATE sont les dignes héritiers du BritRock qu’on aime passionnément.
Sans aucun doute ces jeunes prodiges : le charismatique Conrad Ellis (chant et guitare), Sam Bell (basse), Jake Barnabas (batterie) Lewis Pusey (guitare) incarnent le futur du Rock N’Roll.
Originaire de Winsford (Cheshire) situé non loin de Manchester et Liverpool, ce quatuor ambitieux et déterminé a sorti son premier album fin janvier 2021. Intitulé Fall In Fall Out, les 12 chansons de l’album provoquent une véritable montée d’adrénaline et enflammerons bientôt les salles de concert (passage à Paris prévu le 18 septembre 2021 au Club 1999).
Guitares vrombissantes, voix rocailleuse, rythmiques explosives et sonorités vertigineuse, le groupe excelle dans des compositions rock brut accrocheuses (Feel it, Bury Me, Kick In The Teeth, [ Insert Girl’s Name Here] ) mais révèle aussi son grand talent dans l’interprétation des mélodies planantes dotées d’un grande sensibilité (Girls, Bold, Fall In Fall Out).
Il y a quelque temps, j’ai eu le grand plaisir de discuter via Skype avec Conrad et Lewis qui nous ont dévoilé beaucoup de choses sur cet album que vous allez surement adorer. Découvrez l’Interview!
Le nom The Luka State vient un état d’esprit …
Conrad : Oui, tu es la première à deviner !!! The Luka State signifie une attitude mentale positive. Cela veut dire rester positif, toujours regarder vers l’avant, ne jamais regarder en arrière. La vision est la positivité. Atteindre vos objectifs et ne jamais abandonner. C’est un message positif et un état d’esprit positif.
Luka est une vraie personne ?
Conrad : Oui, c’est une vraie personne. Sam et moi, on a vécu une période à Toronto au Canada et on a rencontré un gars là-bas qui s’appelait Luka. Il venait souvent là où on habitait et son état d’esprit et sa vision de la vie étaient très contagieux et positifs, alors nous avons décidé que notre prochain projet musical portera son nom.
Conrad, tu as commencé le groupe avec Sam, tu pourras nous en dire un peu plus sur la formation de The Luka State ?
Conrad : J’ai commencé à jouer de la musique avec Sam quand nous avions environ 11 ans, donc j’ai l’impression que nous jouons ensemble depuis toujours. Lewis et moi on allait au lycée ensemble. Je savais que Lewis joue de la guitare, donc quand on a voulu créer le groupe, c’était logique de lui demander de nous rejoindre. Et puis Jake, notre batteur, venait à nos concerts quand Sam et moi étions dans un autre groupe. Et un jour, on l’a vu jouer en live et on a dit : c’était notre batteur ! On va le voler parce qu’il est si bon. Alors voilà The Luka State ! C’est notre cinquième année avec cette line up.
Fall In Fall Out est votre premier album. Qu’est-ce que cet album signifie pour vous ? Comment vous vous sentez ?
Conrad : On est très excités. Ça fait longtemps qu’on l’attendait. On a l’impression que c’est le travail cumulé d’une vie entière. Tout ce qu’on a fait dernièrement, c’était pour ce disque. Le monde était un peu en standby, mais il fallait passer par là et s’adapter aux changements.
On avait environ 75 chansons. Certains n’étaient pas finis, pour certains il y avait que des idées, mais tu sais 75 ça fait beaucoup de chansons. On a dû réduire à la 12 que vous pouvez l’entendre maintenant sur l’album. De toute évidence, il y avait beaucoup de désaccords et de disputes concernant ce qui était bien et qui n’était pas bien, mais cela fait partie du processus.
On voulait accorder beaucoup d’attention à ce premier album parce qu’un premier album est très important. Tu n’as qu’une seule chance pour le début. On voulait qu’il ait le plus d’impact possible.
Quand et où l’avez-vous enregistré ?
Conrad : Heureusement, on a enregistré avant la pandémie dans Miloco Studios, The Pool, à Londres.
La signature avec BMG a-t-elle eu un impact pour le sortir maintenant ?
Lewis : Oui, certainement. Une fois BMG est venu à bord, ils nous ont donné l’occasion et les moyens de le partager de la meilleure manière que notre travail méritait.
J’aimerais que vous me parliez de quelques chansons. Feel It ?
Conrad : C’est une des premières chansons écrites pour l’album. Et ça a donné un peu la direction que qu’on voulait prendre pour cet album. La chanson elle-même parle d’une réflexion sur soi-même et du fait de faire des erreurs dans la vie. Car on est des humains et on fait tous des erreurs.
On apprend de ces erreurs, on s’adapte et on change afin de devenir meilleurs. On a pensé que ce serait un bon single de début pour le disque parce que ce morceau est tellement plein de vie.
Quand on l’écoute on a envie de danser, de faire la fête et de sauter dans tous le sens. C’est assez contagieux. C’est une bonne chanson pour nous présenter « Salut, nous sommes The Luka State, écoutez notre chanson Feel It !

Bury Me dégage une énorme énergie, vous la jouez toujours à la fin de vos concerts.
Conrad : Oui, parce que ça pourrait causer quelques crises cardiaques si on la joue au début. On a failli de ne pas la mettre sur l’album. On l’avait mise de côté et notre producteur nous a dit qu’il faut absolument l’inclure. Qu’on est fous de ne pas le faire. Il a vu vraiment l’étincelle. Et quand on est allés au studio, on l’a joué différemment et je suis content qu’on l’a écouté. Cette chanson parle de la séduction et le pouvoir qu’une femme peut avoir sur un homme.
Bold est une très belle balade et j’ai entendu dire qu’elle a quelque chose à voir avec Coldplay …
Conrad : Oui, tu as raison. En fait, j’ai fait une peu de jamming avec un gars qui a travaillé avec Coldplay sur leur premier et le deuxième album. Et il m’a montré un tuning bizarre de Chris Martin. En fait Chris Martin et Coldplay ne jouent jamais dans une clé musicale standard, ils jouent dans un open tuning. Ils ont leur propre tuning et je me suis dit qu’est qu’il va se passer si je fais un guitare tuning à la Conrad Ellis et voir ce qui se passe.
J’ai juste été inspiré par le fait que Chris Marin a son propre tuning et il crée essentiellement ses propres genres de tunings.
C’est ce qu’on a fait de cette chanson. Il ne s’agissait que d’expérimenter différents réglages à la guitare. J’écris cette chanson dans mon propre open tuning. Et c’est une chanson qui parle d’une confrontation que j’ai eu dans un pub local, ici en Angleterre.
J’aime écrire des histoires avec des personnages, pas nécessairement toujours sur moi, mais parfois c’est plus facile d’écrire sur moi.
C’est certainement une de mes chansons préférées sur l’album.
Et toi Lewis, tu as une chanson favorite ?
Lewis : C’est difficile de choisir une chanson favorite. D’une certaine façon, c’est comme si vous aviez un enfant préféré. En fait cela dépend de l’humeur que je suis dans la journée. Si je suis d’humeur agressive, ce sera Insert the Girl name here. J’aime aussi Fall in Fall out
Fall In Fall Out, la chanson-titre est une ballade et votre musique est plus énergique, pourquoi choisir ce titre ?
Conrad : Tout d’abord, je pense que ça sonne très bien ensemble, au niveau de la langue Fall In Fall Out et The Luka State. C’est vrai, à la première vue, ce groupe semble juste être un groupe de Rock N’Roll, mais plus vous apprendrez à nous connaître, plus vous comprenez la substance de notre musique et les histoires derrière nos chansons, vous verrez qu’on est en fait un groupe très profond avec une musique profonde. On partage ensemble un lien spirituel très profond en tant qu’amis. On est des gens très profonds, je pense.
Et on n’a pas peur de le dire que dans l’a vie c’est comme ça. On tomber amoureux et puis on ne l’est plus. On se passionne pour des choses et puis on ne les aime plus.
Tout dans la vie est sujet de changement donc ce titre nous a paru très juste.
Vous avez fait quelques concerts des concerts virtuels, comme c’était ? Vous allez en faire d’autres ?
Conrad : C’était très fun de les faire et on voulait le faire pour tendre la main aux gens parce qu’en ce moment tout le monde manque ce contact humain. Une chose qui manque le plus que jamais aux gens, c’est la musique live et la connexion qu’on a les uns avec les autres, comme être dans un groupe d’amis, regarder un concert ensemble, prendre un verre avec des amis et les étreindre car vous ne les avez vu depuis longtemps.
Toutes ces petites choses sont si importantes dans la vie quotidienne et nous rendent humains. On aime rester engagés auprès de nos fans, faire des choses et leur monter qu’on est toujours là. C’est bien de tendre la main au plus grand nombre.
Quant aux concerts, ce n’est rien de plus qu’on aimerait faire maintient que de prendre la route pour ce disque dès que possible. On a des dates de tournée pour septembre, ici en Angleterre. On va venir à Paris et jouer en Septembre … cela dépend simplement de la situation du monde à ce moment-là. Croisons les doigts.
Avez-vous une icône mode ?
Conrad : Personnellement je suis plutôt intéressé par les années 60, comme par exemple la façon de s’habiller des Beatles. Je dirais que Paul Weller est pour moi une sorte d’icône du style et aussi David Bowie.
Lewis : J’aime plutôt le DIY. J’aime le punk des débuts, des groupes comme The Clash qui portait des vestes personnalisées. Comme icône mode, j’ai grandi en regardant des gens comme Steve Mc Queen.
En ce moment vous avez un vêtement préféré dans votre placard ?
Lewis : Cette chemise noire que je porte est ma chemise préférée.
Conrad : Je suis enfermé dans ce pull – over que je porte, si elle était noire et rouge, ce serait tout à fait Kurt Cobain style.
La mode pour nous dans ce groupe est très importante. On essaye d’avoir une certaine identité. Parce que même si votre musique est bonne si votre look est absolument terrible, ça ne fonctionne pas. C’est un paquet complet. C’est important que la mode et la musique vont de pair.
Quel genre de musique écoutez-vous ?
Conrad : Tout et n’importe quoi. J’ai toujours été dans The Beatles, David Bowie, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Jam … les grands groupe britanniques. Oasis, The Stone Roses, les Smiths, les Sex Pistols, nos héros…
Lewis : Même chose pour moi ! The Clash et The Queen of the Stone Age
Avez-vous une scène ou un festival où vous aimeriez jouer un jour ?
Lewis : Fuji Rocks au Japon. C’est un festival énorme.
Conrad : On n’a toujours pas joué à Glastonbury et tu sais quoi, un bon festival sera Rock en Seine. Là, je veux jouer.
On vous attend à Rock En Seine ! Et pour finir, quels seraient vos souhaits, vos rêves pour cet album ?
Conrad : on espère qu’il sera bien reçu et vous les gars vous l’aimez et vous en profitez. On a aimé le faire et une fois qu’il est sorti c’est maintenant celui des fans pour profiter comme ça leur plaise. On espère juste que vous apprécierez tous. Le deuxième sera bientôt là. On espère que qu’on verra tout le monde en France en Septembre.
Lewis : Avec beaucoup d’arrogance, je voudrais que l’album atteigne le numéro un dans tous les pays du monde… mais si la vie d’une personne change en écoutant notre album, ce serait suffisant pour moi !

Certainly, these young prodigies: the charismatic Conrad Ellis (vocals and guitar), Sam Bell (bass), Jake Barnabas (drums) and Lewis Pusey (guitar) embody the future of Rock N’ Roll.
Natives from Winsford (Cheshire) situated not far from Manchester and Liverpool, this ambitious and determined quartet released their debut album end of January 2021. Entitled Fall In Fall Out, the 12 tracks of the album cause a huge adrenaline rush and will set the stages on fire (show in Paris is scheduled for September 18, 2021 at Club 1999).
Roaring guitars, raspy powerful vocals, explosive rhythms and dizzying sounds, the band excels in catchy raw rock compositions (Feel It, Bury Me, Kick In The Teeth, [Insert Girl’s Name Here]) but also reveals a great talent performing soaring melodies with great sensitivity (Girls, Bold, Fall In Fall Out).
Some time ago, I had the great pleasure of chatting via Skype with Conrad and Lewis who tell us more about this album that you will surely adore.
It looks that the name of the band, The Luka State, comes from a state of mind…
Conrad: Yeah, you are the first one to get it!!! The Luka State means positive mental attitude. It means staying positive, always looking forward, never looking back. Total vision is positivity, reaching your goals and never giving up. All that’s kind of stuff. It’s a positive message and a positive state of mind as well.
And Luka is a real person?
Conrad: Yes, he is a real person. Me and Sam spent some time living in Toronto in Canada and we met a guy there called Luka. He was dropping in in where we were staying quite frequently and his mind set and outlook of life is very infectious and positive. So we decided the name our next musical project back to him and it’s stoked.
Conrad, you started the band with Sam, can you tell us more?
Conrad: I started playing music with Sam when we were around the age of 11, so we can play music together since I can’t remember. Me and Lewis knew together as we went to high school together.
I know Lewis play the guitar, so when we wanted to start a band, it makes sense to ask him to join the band. And then Jake, our drummer used to come to our shows when me and Sam were in other band. And we just see him playing live one day and we said that’s our drummer! We are going to steal him because he is so good. So here it is The Luka State! This is our fifth year together with this line up.
Fall In Fall Out is your debut album. What does it mean for you? How do you feel about it?
Conrad: We’re excited, I am emotional actually. It’s been a long time coming. It feels like an accumulation of life work that it has been put together. And everything we have done lately it has been for this record to come out. The world is on hold but you have to go through it and adopt the changes.
Basically, we had around 75 songs that were written. Some were not finished, for some there just kind of seeds, ideas but you know 75 is a large number of songs. We had to whittle down to the 12 that you can hear it now on the album. Obviously, there were a lot of disagreeing and arguing for what goes well or not, but that’s part of process.
We wanted to pay much attention to this first debut album because a debut record is very important. You only have one shot at the debut. We want it to make it as important and have maximum impact as possible.
When and where did you record it?
Conrad: Fortunately, we recorded before the pandemic in Miloco Studios, The Pool, in London.
Did the signature with BMG was an impact to release it now?
Lewis: Yes, definitely once BMG came on board that’s gave us the opportunity to share it in a way that our body of work deserved.
Can we talk about some songs? Feel it?
Conrad: It was one of the first song written for the record actually. It was kind of the direction that we know we’ll take for the record.
The song itself is about a self-reflection and making mistakes in life. We are humans and we make mistakes. We are all guilty of doing that and that’s how we learn from those mistakes and we adapt and change to better ourselves.
We thought that would be a good lead single for the record, because it’s just so full of life and it is actually, it’s that track on what you want to danse, to turn up. You want to party and jumps up and down. It’s quite infectious. It was a very good welcoming track for us. Hi, we are The Luka State, just listen to this.

Bury me, it’s a huge energetic one. It looks that you play it at the end of the show usually
Conrad: Yes, because it might be some heart attacks if we play it at the beginning.
This song was very close not make the record. It was nearly left off and our producer said you have to include this song. You have to do it. You are crazy not to do it. He really sees the spark at that moment. When we went to the studio, we played a different monster and I am glad we listen to him. This song is just about the seduction and the power that a woman holds over a man.
Bold is a very nice ballad and I heard that it has something to do with Coldplay…
Conrad: Yes, you are right. Basically, I was just jamming with the guy who was co-writer on first and second Coldplay record. And he showed me some Chris Martin weird tuning. Chris Martin and Coldplay never plays in a standard key, they play in an open tuning. They have a kind of his own tunning and I said to myself what happen if I can make a Conrad Ellis tunning. And tune some stuff around and I did it.
I was just inspired by the fact that Chris Marin has his own tuning and basically makes his own kind of sounds. That’s what we did with that song. It was only just about experimentation of different tuning on the guitar. I write that a song in an open key. That’s song is just about a confrontation in the local pub I had in England.
I enjoy to write stories with characters, not necessarily always about me, but sometimes might be about me because it is easy to write around. It’s definitely one of my favourite song on the album.
Lewis, do you have a favourite one in the album?
Lewis: It’s hard to pick a favourite. In a way it’s like you have a favourite child. It depends of what mood I am in the day. If I am in an aggressive mood, it will be [ Insert Girl’s Name Here] but also Fall in Fall out back to the album track.
Fall in Fall Out, the title track is a ballad while your music is more energetic, why choosing this title?
Conrad: First, I think it sound very nicely Fall In Fall Out and The Luka State. I think, it goes well together. Upon first glance this band just seems like a Rock N’ Roll band but more you get to know us to know the substance behind our music and the stories behind our songs, you will see a very deep band with a deep music. We have a deep connection; we share a deep spiritually together as friends.
We are very deep people, I think. We are not scared of hiding that fall in fall out is the meaning of falling in and falling out of anything we do in life, we are fall in fall out in love, fall in fall out of passion for things, fall in fall out of anger of things, you know everything is subject to change in life. This is about this song is about and it just felt fit in and we thought we will go with it and we are glad did.
You did some virtual gigs. How was it, are you going to do more?
Conrad: It’s been very fun and what we wanted to do was to reach out the people because at the moment that world stands as everybody is missing that human connection.
One thing that people is missing more than ever is live music and the connection with each other, you know being in a group together, watching a band together, having drinks together with friends and hugging them while you are not seeing them for a while.
All of these little things are so important in everyday life and make us human. We would like to stay engaged with our fans, to release something and show them that we are still here and we are not going anywhere and we will still be here after the pandemic. It’s good to reach out as many people as possible and yeah we might do a few more things in the next coming months, releasing things and see where we are up.
When it comes to gigs, it’s nothing more than we would like to do than hitting the road for this record as soon as possible. We are having touring dates for September, here in England. We are coming in Paris and play in September…it just depends how world will be at that time. We keep our fingers crossed and we will see where we go but we need to release some more stuff before.
Let’s talk about fashion. Do you guys have a fashion icon in rock?
Conrad: I am more watching myself personally in the 60s kind of look. I really look a lot in the way that the Beatles used to dress. Paul Weller is for me a style icon and David Bowie also.
Lewis: For me, it’s a lot like DIY. I like early punk, bands like The Clash wearing jackets customised by their own. As a fashion icon, I looked up growing to people like Steve Mc Queen.
In this moment do you have some favourite items in your closet?
Lewis: This black shirt I am wearing is my favourite one.
Conrad: I am locked in this jumper, if it was black and red it would be a quite Kurt Cobain one.
Fashion for us in this band is very important. We are trying to have some identity. Because although your music is great if you look rubbish and you look absolutely dreadful, it does not work. It’s a full package. You got a look apart and you have a sound apart. That’s important that fashion and music go hand in hand.
What kind of music do you listen?
Conrad: Everything and anything. I’ve always been into The Beatles, David Bowie, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Clash…Great British band. Oasis, The Stone Roses, the Smiths, the Sex Pistols, our heroes.
Lewis: Same I’d listen to anything and everything. The Clash and The Queen of the Stone Age.
Do you have a stage or festival where you would like to play one day?
Lewis: Fuji Rocks in Japan. It’s a big one.
Conrad: We still did not play Glastonbury and you know what, a good festival will be Rock En Seine. There I want to play.

And to finish, what would be your wishes, dreams for this album?
Conrad: We hope that it is received well and you guys like it and enjoy it. Once the record is out, it’s yours guys. We enjoyed making it and once it goes out into the wild world, it’s now your record and fans record to enjoy as you please. We just hope you enjoy it and the second one will be coming soon. And hopefully we will see everybody in France in September.
Lewis: With pretty some standard arrogance, I would like the album to reach the number one in all the countries of the world… If one person life is change by listening our album, this would be enough for me!
