Les hard rockers de Michigan, POP EVIL, dévoilent leur très attendu sixième album, VERSATILE, via Entertainment One (eOne), le 21 mai 2021.
Les premiers singles Let The Chaos Reign et Work et ensuite Breathe Again lancés l’année dernière avaient cumulés des dizaines de millions de streams et nous avaient mis l’eau à la bouche.
Et voilà que Leigh Kakaty(Chant) entouré par Nick Fuelling (Guitare), Dave Grahs (Guitare), Matt DiRito (bass) et Hayley Cramer (batterie) nous plongent de nouveau avec VERSATILE dans leur sonorités rock avant-gardistes et intemporels.
Si on connait déjà l’excellente l’habilité du POP EVIL de mélanger les styles – pop, rock, métal- pour créer des véritables hymnes head banger et des ballades magnifiques, cette fois les américains vont encore plus loin dans la recherche ambitieuse de nouvelles sonorités.
VERSATILE sonne exactement comme son nom l’indique. Aux rythmiques percutantes et aux riffs colossaux se rajoutent des mélodies groovy agrémentées de touches EDM qui poussent leur musique vers des territoires inconnus.
Les sessions d’écriture de VERSATILE ont débutés à l’été 2019, la majeure partie de l’album ayant été écrite et enregistrée en hiver, début 2020. Le groupe a conçu le matériel aux côtés de nouvelles équipes de producteurs et de collaborateurs.
« Nous avons travaillé avec plusieurs producteurs qui correspondent à la dynamique de chaque chanson », explique Leigh Kakaty.
Fait qui a visiblement renforcé l’identité de chaque morceau, car les changements de tempo et la composition d’une piste à l’autre montre leur énorme etandu créative. L’équilibre entre la lumière et l’obscurité est l’un des points forts de l’album.
Les cinq membres ont une remarquable cohésion électrique : la puissance vocale de Kakaty, l’impressionnante prestance de la batteuse badass Cramer et du bassite DiRitto dans la section rythmique sont complété avec maestria par les guitares de Fuelling et Grach.
En ouverture Let The Chaos Reign frappe fort et direct avec des rythmiques infernales, des riffs énormes et la force vocale de Leigh Kakaty qui alterne le chant mélodique/rappé/ hurlé. « Let me out of the cage » et c’est vraiment le sentiment qu’on a – qu’il veut s’y échapper !
Set Me Free continue avec la même énergie débridée et introduit un magnifique refrain mélodique. Les riffs efficaces sont couplés à une performance formidable du chanteur. Le morceau parle des moments difficiles auxquels le monde a été confronté depuis plus d’un an maintenant.
Breathe Again mêle les sonorités électro au heavy puissant et plus loin avec Work et son refrain agressif et obsédant, Pop Evil s’exerce avec succès au hip hop. Inferno est une balade pop qui bénéficie d’une mélodie grandiose et d’un superbe solo.
Avec Stronger (The Time Is Now) le groupe s’aventure de nouveau sur les territoires pop rock tandis que Raise Your Flag est l’hymne de stades passionné et émouvant qui demande des bras dans l’air et un chant à l’unisson !
Human Nature et la très groovy Survivor délivrent aussi des mélodies accrocheuses qui reflètent l’évolution du groupe vers ces nouveaux horizons, plus main stream et accessibles.
Fire Inside est la chanson de l’espoir et de la survie, avec de parties très heavy et des distorsions rajoutées à la voix très mélodique de Kakaty.
Sans aucun doute, VERSATILE est un album de rock métal résolument contemporain. POP EVIL semble vouloir démontrer que le rock n’est pas mort. Il a juste fait peau neuve et devenu indéniablement moderne !
Visiblement construit pour être joué sur les plus grands scènes, c’est sûr que POP EVIL delivrera en live la même énergie explosive qu’on retrouve sur cet excellent sixième opus !

The Michigan hard rockers POP EVIL releases their highly anticipated sixth album VERSATILE via Entertainment One (eOne) on May 21, 2021. The first singles Let The Chaos Reign and Work then Breathe Again released last year had accumulated tens of millions of streams and make us very impatients.
Leigh Kakaty (Vocals), Nick Fuelling (Guitare), Dave Grahs (Guitare), Matt DiRito (bass) and Hayley Cramer (drums) invite us with VERSATILE into their avant-garde and timeless rock sounds.
If we already know the great ability of POP EVIL to mix styles – pop, rock, metal – to create real head banger anthems and beautiful ballads, this time the Americans go even further in their ambitious to explore new sounds.
VERSATILE sounds exactly as the name suggests. Alongside the hard-hitting rhythms and colossal riffs, we find groovy melodies embellished with EDM sounds that push their music towards unknown territories.
The writing sessions for VERSATILE begin in the summer of 2019, with the bulk of the album written and recorded in the winter, going into early 2020. The band crafted the material alongside new creative teams of producers and collaborators. “We worked with multiple producers that fit each song’s dynamic,” Kakaty explains.
This fact has visibly reinforced the identity of each track because the tempo and the composition that change from one track to another shows their huge creative potential. The balance between light and darkness is one of the album’s strengths.
The five members have a remarkable electric cohesion: Kakaty’s vocal power, the impressive performance of the badass drummer Cramer and of DiRitto in the rhythm section are complemented with mastery by Fuelling and Grach’s guitars.
The opener Let The Chaos Reign hits hard and staright with infernal rhythms, huge riffs and the vocal strength of Leigh Kakaty that alternates melodic/rapped/screaming vocals. “Let me out of the cage” he says in the song and that’s really the feeling you have! Set Me Free continues with the same incredible energy and introduces a magnificent melodic chorus. The effective riffs are coupled with a fantastic vocal performance. The song talks about the difficult times the world has been facing for more than a year now.
Breathe Again mixes electro sounds with powerful heavy and further with Work and its aggressive and explosive chorus Pop Evil is successfully practiced in hip hop. Inferno is an excellent pop ballad with a great melody and a superb solo. With Stronger (The Time Is Now), the band ventures into the territories pop rock and Raise Your Flag is the passionate and emotional big arenas anthem that suggests the arms in the air and a big singalong!
Human Nature and the very groovy Survivor also deliver catchy melodies that reflect the group’s evolution towards these new horizons, more main stream and accessible. Fire Inside is the song of hope and survival, with very heavy parts and distortions added to Kakaty’s very melodic voice.
VERSATILE is definitely a contemporary metal rock album. POP EVIL seems to want to show that rock is not dead, it has just been transformed and become undeniably modern!
Obviously written to be performed on the biggest arenas in the world and it’s sure that POP EVIL will deliver live the same explosive energy that we find on this excellent sixth record!
