Le 22 janvier 2021, le groupe de néo-folk nordique, WARDRUNA a sorti son très attendu album, Kvitravn. Comme tous les artistes, ils ont été malheureusement contraints de repousser leur tournée à 2022, ce qui signifie que leurs nombreux fans devraient attendre encore pour vivre la magie de leur concerts époustouflants dans une vrai salle de spectacle.
Dans ces conditions, le collectif Norvégien nous a invité vendredi dernier à les rejoindre pour la présentation officielle de ce nouvel opus depuis chez nous, avec un spectacle virtuel intitule “First Flight of the White Raven” (Le premier Vol du Corbeau Blanc).
La formation de Bergen est très connue et admiré pour ses performances scéniques authentiques et formidables, on était donc évidemment curieux d’expérimenter ce live Stream.
La magnifique chanson titre de l’album Kvitravn démarre le show. Sur l’écran géant on observe les images du corbeau blanc, ce volatile rare et sacré qui a inspiré ce morceau. Les cris du corbeau, les effets sonores de pluie et de vent, les tambours rythmiques lents, la mélodie mélancolique et les voix envoutantes nous portent rapidement dans les contrées lointaines, au milieu de la nature, dans les forêts et les paysages enneigés de la Norvège.
La mise en scène est sobre et minimaliste. On découvre les 7 musiciens tous de noir vêtu. Einar Selvik (Vocals, Taglharpa, Kravik-lyre, Bukkehorn), l’âme créatrice de Wardruna, est entouré des deux chanteuses Lindy-Fay Hella et Katrine Stenbekk, ainsi que des musiciens Arne Sandvoll (percussions, backing vocals), Eilif Gundersen (Bukkehorn, Lur, Flute, Backing vocals), HC Dalgaard (percussions,Backing vocals) et John Stenersen (mora-harpa).
Dans son riche univers musical, WARDRUNA utilise une large sélection d’instruments traditionnels et historiques tels que le Kravik-lyre, le Trossingen-lyre, le Taglharpa, le Sotharpa, le Langeleik, le Crwth, le Goat- horn, le Lur, le Bronze-lur, la flûte, le Mora harpa, qu’on aura l’occasion de découvrir tout au long du concert ainsi que des sources sonores telles que les arbres, les pierres, les os, l’eau ou le feu en fonction du thème de la chanson.
“First Flight of the White Raven” nous a permis de s’envoler pour un peu plus d’une heure vers les paysages de la Norvège et ses terres peuplées de créatures magnifiques.
Le chant solennel et saccadé de tous les membres du groupe sur Skugge accompagnés par la flute, la guimbarde, est tout simplement magique. Sur Bjarkan le chant est monacal, la voix superbe de Lindy-Fay Hella qui porte une impressionnante cape noire en plume de corbeau est d’une extrême beauté.
Les sonorités puissantes et l’ambiance sombre nous plonge dans une transe ensorcelante. Les chansons de WARDRUNA parlent des traditions, de la nature, des animaux sacrés, de la spiritualité, de la philosophie, de la mythologies ou d’autres sujets ésotériques…
L’ambiance sombre nous permet de se concentrer sur la beauté du folk traditionnel norvégien interprété d’une manière moderne. Les voix des musiciens, les mélodies et les harmonies sont sublimes. Même si on ne comprend pas la langue, on ressent le pouvoir des mots, l’émotion, la poésie qui touche nos âmes. Chaque chanson sera accompagnée par une explication en anglais sur la signification de la chanson ou d’un instrument.
Einar Selvik interprètera seul sur scène accompagné de la kravik lyre la version scaldique de Voluspá. Sur Grá le groupe semble reciter une sorte de rituel. Le son est profond et immersif, le chant à capela et l’intervention des voix féminines sont remarquables.
Vindavlarljod est une autre chanson puissante, la mélodie est douce et raffinée, les flutes enchantent et la lyre est obsédante. Le concert prendra fin avec Helvegen chanté à la lumière de torches et un chant à cappella.
Certes on a regardé ce concert sur un écran de tablette ou d’ordinateur mais la musique de norvégiens, son caractère authentique et apaisant, nous a donné la liberté de l’esprit et nous a porté sur des territoires soniques magnifiques.
Un show qui nous a permis de s’envoler pour un peu plus d’une heure vers les paysages de la Norvège et ses terres peuplées de créatures magnifiques. Une évasion bien nécessaire de la réalité étrange avec laquelle la plupart d’entre nous sont confrontés en ce moment.
C’était bien sûr une bonne occasion de découvrir en live les quatre nouveaux titres de Kvitravn mais aussi de réécouter des morceaux plus anciens dans un interprétation exceptionnelle.
Einar Selvik est un maitre-conteur. Il a une véritable capacité d’écrire des chansons aux rythmes accrocheurs qui racontent une histoire et donnent la vie à de traditions ancestrales tout en les transformant en quelque chose du nouveau et moderne.
Avec tous ces sons, les instruments, les magnifiques voix et d’harmonies, le sens de détail, les incroyables musiciens de WARDRUNA construisent un voyage épic sonore et visuel qui prend la dimension d’une grande épopée.

On January 22, 2021, the Nordic Folk band WARDRUNA released their highly anticipated album, Kvitravn. As all artists, they were unfortunately forced to postpone their tour until 2022, which means that their many fans would still have to wait to experience the magic of their breath-taking concerts in a real concert hall.
In these conditions, the Norwegian collective invited us, last Friday, to join them for the official presentation of this new album with a virtual live show entitled “First Flight of the White Raven”.
The band from Bergen is well known and admired for its authentic and wonderful stage performances, so we were obviously curious to experience this Live Stream.
The beautiful title track from the album Kvitravn kicks off the show. On the giant screen we observe the images of the white raven, this rare and sacred bird that inspired this song. The raven’s cry, the sound of rain and wind, the slow rhythmic drums, the melancholic melody and the captivating voices quickly bring us to the distant lands, in the middle of nature, in the forests and the snowy landscapes of Norway.
“First Flight of the White Raven” allowed us to travel to the beautiful landscapes of Norway and its lands populated by magnificent creatures.
We discover the 7 musicians all dressed in black. Einar Selvik (Vocals, Taglharpa, Kravik-lyre, Bukkehorn), the creative soul of Wardruna and is surrounded by singers Lindy-Fay Hella and Katrine Stenbekk, as well as musicians Arne Sandvoll (Percussion, Backing vocals), Eilif Gundersen (Bukkehorn, Lur, Flute, Backing vocals), HC Dalgaard (Drums, Percussion, Backing vocals) and John Stenersen (Mora-harp).
In its rich musical universe WARDRUNA uses a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Trossingen-lyre, Taglharpa, Sotharpa, Langeleik, Crwth, Goat-horn, Lur, Bronze-lur, flute, Moraharpa which will be discovered throughout the concert as well as sources of sound such as trees, stones, bones, water and fire in order to enhance the nature of the theme being ‘portrayed’ in each case.
The solemn singing of all the members of the band on Skugge accompanied by the flute, the mouth harp, is simply magical. Like a ritual. On Bjarkan the singing is monastic, the superb voice of Lindy-Fay Hella who wears an impressive black crow feather cape is of extreme beauty. The powerful sounds and dark atmosphere plunge us into a bewitching trance. WARDRUNA‘s songs speak of traditions, nature, sacred animals, spirituality, philosophy, mythologies or other esoteric subjects…
The dark ambience allow us to focus on the beauty of traditional Nordik folk performed in a modern way. The voices of the musicians, the melodies and the harmonies are sublime. Even if we don’t understand language, we feel the power of words, of the poetry that touches our souls. Each song will be accompanied by an explanation in English about the meaning of the song or instrument.
Einar Selvik will perform alone on stage accompanied by the kravik lyre the scalding version of Voluspá. On Grà the group seems to say a prayer, the sound is deeper and immersive, the à Capella singing and the intervention of the female vocals are remarkable.
Vindavlarljod is another powerful song, the melody is soft and refined, the flutes enchant and the lyre is haunting. The concert will end with Helvegen sung in the light of torches and a cappella song.
Of course, we watched this concert on a tablet or computer screen but the music of Norwegians, its authentic and soothing character, gave us freedom of mind and carried us to magnificent sonic territories.
“First Flight of the White Raven” allowed us to travel to the beautiful landscapes of Norway and its lands populated by magnificent creatures. A much-needed escape from the strange reality that most of us are facing right now.
It was of course a good opportunity to discover the four newtracks of Kvitravn live but also to listen to older songs in an exceptional interpretation. Einar Selvik is a master story-teller. He has a real ability to write songs with catchy rhythms that tell a story and give life to ancestral traditions while transforming them into something new and modern.
With all these sounds and instruments, beautiful voices and harmonies, the sense of detail and the incredible musicians, WARDRUNA offered us a fantastic journey of sound and vision with the dimension of a great epic.
