Pour un jeune groupe rock, cette période chaotique n’est vraiment pas ideale pour lancer son premier album. Mais les 5 rockers ambitieux de Mason Hill n’ont pas voulu attendre plus longtemps et ils ont pris le risque de dévoiler le 5 mars 2021, leur premier opus intitulé Against the Wall.
Le groupe originaire de Glasgow a été formé par 2 adolescents en 2013 : le chanteur Scott Taylor et le guitariste James Bird qui ont été rapidement rejoints par Marc Montgomery (guitare), Matthew Ward (basse) & Craig Mc Fetridge (batterie).
Après la sortie d’un EP en 2015, le groupe a ensuite travaillé 5 ans d’arrache pied pour construire cet album et après de nombreux retards, quand le moment est enfin venu, la frustration est grande car pas possible d’accompagner cette sortie tant attendu par les habituels concerts live, les release parties ou les rencontres avec les fans en personne, etc. Mais leur enthousiasme n’a pas faibli et pendant ces derniers mois, ils se sont donnés à fond pour nous offrir un excellent aperçu de cet album avec la sortie de 4 singles infaillibles Against The Wall, Find My Way, D.N.A et Broken Son et des vidéos qui nous plongent dans leur univers rock puissant, énergique et efficace, capable d’attirer et de faire danser les foules.
Mason Hill joue « un rock moderne, mélodique, axé sur la guitare qui devrait plaire à tous ceux qui aiment entendre des mélodies accrocheuses et de gros riffs de guitare ». C’est la description de leur musique faite par le bassiste Matthew Ward avec qui j’ai eu le plaisir de discuter via Skype, début février 2021. Et je suis tout à fait d’accord avec lui.

Salut Matt comment vas-tu ?
Matt : Ça va très bien. Nous sommes confinés depuis janvier mais il neige actuellement en Écosse et de tout façon je ne sortirai pas de la maison parce qu’il fait trop froid.
Mason Hill a été formé par James et Scott et tu les as rejoints après. Tu pourras me dire comment tu as rencontré le groupe?
Matt : Mason Hill existait depuis quelques années quand j’ai rejoint le groupe. Je les ai rencontrés lors d’un concert à Glasgow alors que je jouais dans un autre groupe, Attica Rage, et ils ont ouvert la soirée pour nous …. Ils ont mis le feu cette nuit-là et donc j’ai continué à les suivre. Ensuite, quand ils semblaient être à la rechercher un bassiste et j’ai dû envoyer un texto à l’un de gars quand j’etais ivre car je ne me souviens pas de l’avoir fait. Je n’ai pas eu de retour tout de suite. Trois semaines plus tard, j’ai reçu un appel qui me demandait d’aller en répétition avec le groupe. C’est comme ça que je me suis retrouvé dans le groupe. Donc, je suppose que c’était un bon texto.
Et le nom du groupe, comment il a été choisi ?
Matt : Le nom a été décidé par James et Scott et pendant quelques années, je ne savais même pas d’où il venait. J’ai compris à travers les interviews que c’était un choix aléatoire. James et Scott étaient dans un célèbre bar rock à Glasgow le Solid Rock Café et il y avait une page de journal ouverte devant d’eux. Et l’article était parlait d’une colline (Hill) et l’interview parlait d’un certain docteur Mason. Et ces 2 mots cote à cote semblait à un nom de groupe, c’est pourquoi ils choisissent Mason Hill. Et nous y voilà, même de nombreuses années plus tard ça sonne toujours bien.
Votre premier album sort début mars, comment avez-vous écrit ces chansons ?
Matt : Cet album a été en precessus de création pendant 5 ans et peut-être il y a 2 ou 3 versions différentes de cet album car on a changé les chansons plusieurs fois. L’écriture de la majorité des chansons a commencé avec James et Scott, avec les riffs et les mélodies de base ou peut-être avec quelques accords au piano que Scott a écrit, puis le reste du groupe intervient, chacun apporte ses idées pour reconstruire et restructurer jusqu’à la version finale que vous pouvez écouter sur l’album.
Nous sommes très méticuleux quand il s’agit de l’écriture de chansons. Certains groupes vont écrire une chanson et la sortir en l’espace de quelques semaines. Mason Hill fera différentes versions de la chanson et la sortir 3 mois plus tard. Nous essayons toujours de la perfectionner.
Comment travaillez-vous habituellement ensemble ?
Matt : Pour cet album on a travaillé ensemble dans une pièce. À l’heure actuelle, on est en train d’écrire du nouveau matériel, et comme on n’a pas le droit d’être dans la même pièce, on travaille en ligne. C’est une nouvelle façon de travailler pour nous, mais c’est aussi intéressant car certainement, cette façon de communiquer apporte de nouvelles idées. Ce n’est peut-être pas l’idéal, mais cela nous donne une chance d’essayer des choses que nous n’aurions peut-être pas essayées si nous étions tous assis dans une pièce ensemble. C’est fun d’une certaine façon, mais vraiment ma façon préférée de faire est juste d’être dans une pièce avec les gars, jouer avec des guitares et ainsi de suite. Quoi qu’il en soit, nous pouvons dire que, heureusement, la technologie nous a sauvé dernièrement.
L’album s’appelle Against the Wall qui est aussi le titre d’une de vos chansons
Matt : Against the Wall a été le titre le plus approprié pour décrire l’expérience que nous avons eue pour la création et la sortie de cet album. Ça a pris beaucoup de temps et il y a eu beaucoup de moments difficiles et des retards. Lors de la création de cet album, parfois, on s’est retrouvé vraiment au pied du mur. Certaines décisions ont été contraires à ce qu’on avait choisi, des choses comme ça. Une fois que cette chanson a été faite et on lui a donné ce titre, on n’a pas beaucoup discuté, c’était clair que Against the Wall est le titre parfait. La chanson elle-même exprime le fait de surmonter l’adversité d’une manière positive. C’est le thème de l’album, surmonter l’adversité et terminer d’une façon positive qui est dans notre cas la sortie de l’album et, espérons-le, de la musique édifiante pour les gens pendant cette période terrible.
Vous avez créé cet emoji qui apparait sur la pochette, sur votre merchandising et également dans la vidéo. Qu’est-ce qu’il représente pour vous ?
Matt : L’idée était de créer un emoji qui racontent l’histoire pour nous. Le visage sur la pochette de l’album, il nous représente car nous avons beaucoup des chose à dire, mais on n’est pas autorisés de les dire. C’est pourquoi nous avons une croix sur la bouche. Nous pensons vraiment que c’est une image puissante pour aller de pair avec l’histoire de l’album. Cette image peut être appliqué à tant de choses différentes dans la vie et à des nombreuses expériences que chacun des membres du groupe a traversé. Et je suis sûr que d’autres personnes se retrouveront aussi dans cette image.
Une chanson préférée sur l’album ?
Matt : C’est vraiment difficile à dire. Chaque membre du groupe pourrait avoir une réponse différente à cette question, j’imagine. D’un point de vue live, ma chanson préférée sur l’album à jouer est No Regret car elle est très fortement axée sur la basse. Et avec cette ligne de basse sur le couplet permet au bassiste de se retrouver au centre de l’attention pendant quelques secondes, ce qui est très bien. En ce qui concerne l’écoute de l’album, je pense que Where I belong est potentiellement le titre le plus puissant pour nous et pour les fans aussi.
Out of Reach est une belle balade. Quelle est l’histoire de cette chanson ?
Matt : C’est l’une des premières chansons que Scott et James ont écrit. Je ne peux pas te dire la signification de paroles et pour être honnête Scott garde un peu le secret sur cette chanson. D’habitude quand on nous interroge en interview sur le sens des chansons, on laisse souvent à l’auditeur l’interprétation. Il est très intéressant d’entendre ce que quelqu’un d’autre pense de la chanson et ce qu’il en a retiré. Pour Scott, je pense que certaines chansons peuvent être très personnelles, il écrit la plupart des paroles et des fois il nous partage quelques informations.
Out of Reach est l’une de leurs premières chansons qu’ils ont écrites quand étaient adolescents. On l’a récemment reconstruite et restructuré, de sorte que la version de l’album est très différente de celle d’avant qui existe sur certains enregistrements live. Je crois qu’il y a une version très ancienne sur You Tube. La chanson a des section plus heavy maintenant et les versets plus mélodiques et donc j’espère que les gens ont apprécié ce changement autant que nous avont aime de le faire.
Vous avez dévoilé une nouvelle vidéo récemment, DNA et il semble qu’il était assez difficile de la filmer
Matt : C’était très amusant mais aussi c’était très difficile à filmer. La réalisation d’un vidéo clip prend habituellement au moins 10-12 heures de tournage pour 3-4 minutes de video clip. Et pendant environ 7 heures on a du porter des lentilles de contact très épaisses, pour pouvoir recevoir sur nos visage ces canons d’UV’s géants. Aucun d’entre nous ne porte de lentilles de contact, et aucun d’entre nous n’a pas essayé dès les mettre avant, alors c’était difficile. Il y a quelques images drôles que nous avons publiées et vous pouvez nous voir tous pleurer comme des bébés en essayant de mettre nos lentilles de contact pour la première fois, puis se plaindre pour le reste du tournage. Mais c’est une vidéo incroyable et nous en sommes vraiment fiers même si nos yeux font encore mal encore quand on y pense.
Vous allez faire d’autres vidéos ?
Matt : Il y aura quelques versions numériques et nous discutons d’ajouter quelques images. Notre prochaine chanson sera Broken Sun avant la sortie de l’album et je pense que les gens vont adorer. On aimerait certainement faire un autre clip vidéo mais pour l’instant c’est en planification. C’est excitant mais on aurait aimé pouvoir jouer live, mais pour le moment on fait ce qu’on peut pour offrir aux fans quelque chose de nouveau.
Vous avez planifié des live streams ?
Matt : Oui, c’est quelque chose qu’on prévoit en ce moment, mais comme on ne peut pas se retrouver dans le même pièce, on verra … S’il n’y avait pas cette pandémie, on aurait pu faire une tournée complète, avec des release parties, toutes les choses habituelles que vous pourriez voir pour un lancement d’album.
On a planifié quelques vidéos et on essaie de faire un événement en direct pour la sortie de l’album. On est super impatients et on essayera quelque chose de différent pour le garder frais et offrir quelque chose de nouveau au public. On n’a pas joué live depuis mars dernier.
Quelles sont les influences musicales du groupe ?
Matt : Les influences musicales du groupe sont très différentes. On aime tous clairement la musique des guitares, certains d’entre nous aiment la musique plus heavy comme moi et notre batteur Craig, on est très heavy métal avec des groupes comme Gojira ou Metallica.
James et Scott, ils nous ont beaucoup amenés vers Alter Bridge ou Black Stone Cherry. Je pense que nous essayons de mélanger tout ce que nous aimons tous et d’apporter dans le groupe. Il y a évidemment des morceaux plus lourds et le plus important est d’apporter les mélodies fortes des groupes que nous écoutons. Il y a aussi beaucoup de plaisirs coupables et douteux dans le groupe.
Comment as-tu commencé à jouer la basse ? Un bassiste préféré ?
Matt : La raison pour laquelle j’ai commencé à jouer de la basse vient d’un style complètement différent, du Hip Hop. Mes frères aînés ont toujours écouté des disques de hip hop qui sont tous très axés sur la basse. C’est comme cela que j’ai découvert l’instrument. Et une fois que j’ai découvert Red Hot Chilly Peppers et Flea, il ya eu que le rock pour moi. Donc certainement, Flea m’a influencé en tant que bassiste. Je pense qu’il est phénoménal, totalement fou sur scène. J’ai beaucoup appris à l’écouter et à le regarder
Et ton premier souvenir musical ?
Matt : Mon père écoutait beaucoup les Beatles et je pense que c’était probablement quand ils ont sorti la compilation de tous leurs albums numéro un. C’est la première fois que j’ai entendu de la musique et cela m’a affecté d’une certaine façon. Je me suis senti connecté à cette musique. Avant, c’était juste des chansons à la radio, mais quand j’ai entendu les Beatles et plus tard Pink Floyd, c’était la musique qui m’a vraiment donné envie de m’asseoir et écouter.
D’après ce que j’ai compris, tu as étudié la microbiologie et la virologie à l’Université
Matt : c’est exact … tu as bien fait tes recherches … je suis toujours surpris quand quelqu’un me parle de ça. J’ai étudié la microbiologie et la virologie à l’Université de Glasgow pendant quelques années mais j’ai décidé de ne pas poursuivre dans cette voie et de suivre la musique. Compte tenu de la situation actuelle dans le monde, je ne sais pas si c’était une bonne ou une mauvaise idée parce que j’aurais pu sauver la planète ou le contraire, j’aurais pu faire quelque chose de pire. Personnellement, je pense qu’il est préférable que je ne sois pas dans un laboratoire pour faire des recherches.
J’ai remarqué que vous êtes toujours habillé en noir, vous portez aussi des costumes dans des vidéos, avez-vous déjà pensé à porter quelque chose comme des uniformes dans l’avenir ?
Matt : Avec le rock et les uniformes, vous devez toujours trouver le bon l’équilibre pour ne pas être ringard. Actuellement, pour les concerts on porte que des vêtements Rock n’ Roll avec des jeans déchirés, t-shirts noirs. Mais certainement, sur les tournées de l’album, on va essayer d’introduire un peu l’artwork de l’album. C’est toujours intéressant quand on voit un groupe intégrer l’artwork dans leur image sur scène. Je pense que Twenty-One Pilots le fait brillamment. Ils le font très subtilement et il est toujours intéressant de voir ce qu’ils vont faire ensuite. C’est généralement quelque chose que les fans peuvent reproduire. Donc, j’adore cette idée.
Sinon quel est ton style, qu’est-ce qu’on peut trouver dans ta garde-robe ?
Matt : La majorité de mes vêtements sont des vêtements de skate. Adolescent, j’ai grandi dans les skateparks d’Écosse qui ne sont pas si nombreux. Donc, j’aime porter toutes les marques de vêtements de skate (Il me montre le sweater noir Vans qu’il porte), les chaussures de skate, tops, T-shirts, etc et parfois un beau costume, pour certaines occasions.
Et pour finir comment tu décris votre musique à une personne qui n’a jamais entendu parler de Mason Hill ?
Matt : Je décrirais la musique de Mason Hill comme un rock moderne, mélodique et axé sur la guitare qui devrait plaire à tous ceux qui aiment entendre des mélodies accrocheuses et de gros riffs de guitare.

As a young rock band, this chaotic period is definitely not the right time to launch their first album. But the five ambitious rockers of Mason Hill did not want to wait any longer and they assume the risk of releasing on March 5, 2021, their debut album entitled Against the Wall.
The Glasgow-born band was formed by two teenagers in 2013: the singer Scott Taylor and the guitarist James Bird, who were joined later by Marc Montgomery (guitar), Matthew Ward (bass) and Craig Mc Fetridge (drums).
They relase an EP in 2015, then the band worked hard during 5 years to build this album. After many delays and setbacks when the time has finally come, the frustration is huge because it is not possible to accompany this long-awaited release by the usual live concerts, release parties or meetings with fans in person, etc.
But the enthusiasm of this band is immense and during the last months, they offer us an excellent overview of this album with the release of fantastic singles Against The Wall, Find My Way, D.N.A and Broken Son and several videos that dive us into their powerful, energetic and effective rock universe, capable of attracting and making crowds dance.
Mason Hill plays “modern, melodic, guitar driven rock that should appeal to anyone who like to hear catchy melodies and big guitar riffs” this is how descibe their music the bass player Matthew Ward with whom I had the pleasure of chatting via Skype in early February 2021. And I completely agree with him.

Hello Matt, How are you?
Matt: I am great. We are in lockdown here but It’s currently snowing in Scotland and I wouldn’t go out of the house cause it’s freezing.
Mason Hill was formed by James and Scott, you join them afterwards, can you tell me how you met the band?
Matt: Mason Hill existed for probably a couple of years before, I joined the band. I met the band though a gig In Glasgow while I was playing in another band, Attica Rage, and they opened the show for us…. they kind of blew off the stage that night. I followed them afterwards and when they seem that they were looking for someone to fill the role of the bass player I must have sent a drunk text message to one of the guys, I did not remember doing this…I had nothing back from them but 3 weeks later I got a call that ask me to go in rehearsal with the band. That’s how, I end up in the band. So, I guess it was a good drunk text from that point.
How about the name of the band, can you tell me how it was decided?
Matt: The name was decided by James and Scott and for a couple of years I did not even know where the name came from. But what I understand from interviews is that it was a random choice of the name. Basically, James and Scott sat in a famous rock bar in Glasgow, the Solid Rock Café, and they had a newspaper page open in front of them. And the article was about a Hill and the Interview was over a Doctor Mason. And these 2 words next to each other sounds like a band name, that’s why they choose Mason Hill. And here we are, even many years later sounds good.
You are going to release your debut album beginning of March, how did you put together these songs?
Matt: That album has been in creation for 5 years and maybe there are 2 or 3 different versions of this album as we just keep changing the songs. The majority of the songs starts with Jim and Scott, they put together the riffs and the basic melodies, then we the rest of the band came up and we kind of reconstruct everything and rebuild it until become the version that you can see on the album.The songs always start on the guitar or maybe with a couple of chords on piano that Scott wrote and then everything rolls from there. Everyone bring ideas in all the process, till we basically end up with the finish product. We are very meticulous when it comes to song writing. Some bands will write a song and release it in a space of a few weeks. Mason Hill will do different versions and then release it 3 month later. We always try to perfect it.
How do you usually work together?
Matt: Usually, we worked together in a room and that how this album came up. Right now, we are still writing some new material, so as we are not allowed to be in the same room, everything has been done on line. It’s a new way of working for us, but it’s interesting as certainly, this way of communicating is bringing new ideas. It’s maybe not the ideal, but it’s certainly giving us a chance to try things that maybe we would not have had if we all be sitting in a room together. It’s fun in a way but really my favourite way to do is just to be in a room together with the guys, playing with guitars and so on. Anyway, we can say that luckily technology come to save the day for the last couple of years and help us to communicate right now.
You called the album Against the Wall which is also the title of one of your songs
Matt: Against the Wall just made sense for describing the experience that we’ve had for creating and releasing this album. It has been a long time in the making and it was multiples hard times and delays. During the creation of this album, we have felt up against the wall at some points. Some decisions would be against of what we have chosen, things like that. Once that song was made and once the name was put to that song, it wasn’t much discussion on what the title track would be as Against the Wall just make the perfect sense. The song itself express the overcoming adversity and coming over in a positive manner. That’s what this album is, about overcoming adversity and come to an end which is the release of the album and hopefully some uplifting music for people during this awful time.
You create this emoji that it is on the album cover and also appear in the video with the masked faceless suits. What is the story behind?
Matt: The idea was to create an emoji that tell the story for us. The face on the album cover, it represents us having a lot to say but no being allowed to say it, that’s why we got a cross mouth. We really think that is a powerful image to go along with the story of the album and it can be applied to so many different things in life, of many experiences of that each of the band member went through. And I am sure that other people could apply that experience to their own life as well.
Do you have a favourite song on the album?
Matt: It’s really hard to say. Every member of the band could have a different answer to that question, I would imagine. From a live perspective my favourite song on the album to play is “No Regret” as it is very heavily bass driven. With this bass line on the verse is good for a bass player to get a spot light for a few seconds. In terms of listening to the album, I think Where I belong is potentially the most powerful one for me and for the fans as well. I think is resonate a lot for people, that song always is very powerful and emotional song to listen to for all of us.
Out of Reach is a beautiful ballad. What is the story of this song?
Matt: It’s one of the first song that Scott and James put together. I can’t tell you the lyrical content and to be honest Scott likes to play that quite close to his chest. Usually in interview when he is asked about the meaning of the songs, we often leave up to the listener the interpretation. we like to do it because for one it is very interesting to hear what someone else thinks about the song and what they have taken from it. For Scott, I think some of the songs can be quite personal, he writes the most of the lyrics he drops some information sometimes to us . With regards to this song as existed, since they were teenagers, this is one of their first ever songs and we’ve recently rebuilt it and we restructured it, so the album version is very different of what we had previously on some live recordings. I believe that there is a very old version of that on You Tube and if people what to get detective they can find it. It moved along as a much heavier song now, with more melodic verses and with much heavier sections now, so I hope that people enjoyed that change as much as we enjoyed adding it.
You recently release the DNA video. It looks it was quite difficult to film it. What can you tell me about the video?
Matt: It was very fun to film but also it was very hard to film. Music video always take usually minimum 10-12 hours to shoot for 3-4 minutes of footage. For about 7 hours of that, we had very thick contact lens, so we can get this giant UV cans waving up our faces. None of us wear contact lens, and none of us had to put them before, so there us some funny footage of all of us crying like babies, trying to get our contact lens for the first time and then complying for the rest of the shoot that we can’t see anything. It turned into an amazing video and we are really proud of it. We really love to do it but I think our eyes still stain when we are watching back.
Do you plan more videos?
Matt: There will be a couple of digital releases and we are discussing to adding some footage to one of those. Our next release will be Broken Sun and I think people will love and we are discussing if we add some footage to that. We certainly would like to do one more music video as the album run and I suspect we will, but for the moment that’s in the planning stages. It’s exciting, we wished we could play it live but for the moment we are doing what we can to give to the fans something new.
You plan some live streams?
Matt: Yes, this is something that we are planning is this moment but as I said in Scotland, we cannot even be in the same room…So if it wouldn’t be not pandemic, we could have been doing a full tour, with releasing parties, all the usual stuff that you could see for an album launch but at the end, we are trying to do a live event but it is difficult. We are planning something musical and videos stuff to go along with the album release week, that it will only be showing in that week through video stuff and live streams. We are exciting, we are trying something different to keep it fresh and keep the audience engaged as we’ve not managed to play any sort of live music since last March.
What are the musical influences in the band?
Matt: The musical influences in the band are very different. We clearly all love the guitar driven music, some of us like heavier music as myself and our drummer Craig, we are in the heavy metal with bands like Gojira or Metallica things like that. James and Scott, they brought us very much in Alter Bridge or Black Stone Cherry. I think we try to mix everything that we all love and bring into the band. There is obviously some heavier tracks, the most important is to bring in the strong melodies from bands that we listen. There are a lot of questionable guilty pleasures in the band as well.
How did you start playing bass? A favourite bass player?
Matt: The reason I started playing bass was actually from a completely different gender, from Hip Hop. My older brothers always played hip hop records which are all very bass driven, that how I discovered the instrument. And once I discovered Red Hot Chilly Peppers and Flea it was all rock for me. So definitely, Flea influenced me as a bass player. I think he is phenomenal, totally crazy person on stage. I’ve definitely taken a lot from growing watching and listening to them.
How about your first musical memory?
Matt: My father was always playing The Beatles and I think that it was probably when they release the compilation of all their number one albums. That’s the first time I heard music and affected me in a way and I felt connected with it. Before it was just songs on the radio but when I heard the Beatles and later Pink Floyd that was the first music that really make me sit down and listen.
As far as I understand you studied microbiology and virology at University?
Matt: that’s correct…You’ve done your researches … it always surprised me when someone come with this…I was the Glasgow University for a few years studying microbiology and virology and I decided not to continue in that path and follow music. Given the current situation in the world, I do not know if it was a good or a bad idea because I could have saved the planet or I could have done something worse. I personally think that it is best that I am not in a lab doing that researches.
I notice you are always wearing black, you also wearing suits in videos, did you consider to wear something like uniforms for the future?
Matt: With rock and uniforms you always have to find the straight balance and making it not cheesy. Currently in terms of our live shows, we wear just Rock n’ Roll clothes with ripped jeans, black T- shirt. But certainly, on the album tours, I think you will see a little bit of the album imagery and artwork snicking that way. It is always interesting when you see a band integrate their artwork into the image they bring on stage. I think of a band that it doing brilliantly is Twenty-One Pilots. They do it very subtly and it is always interesting to see what they will do next and it is usually something that the fans can replicate. So, I love that idea and I would definitely bring into the band as we move on.
What is your style, when we can find in your wardrobe?
Matt: The majority of my wardrobe skate wear. As a teenager, I grew up in the skate parks in Scotland which are not so many. So, I like to wear all the skater brands (He show me the Vans black sweater that he is wearing), the skater shoes, Tops, T- shirts, etc and occasionally a nice smart suit.
How will you describe your music to a person that never heard about Mason Hill?
Matt: I would describe Mason Hill as modern, melodic, guitar driven rock that should appeal to anyone who like to hear catchy melodies and big guitar riffs.
