Après l’excellent Truth and Lies sorti l’année dernière, TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN frappent fort de nouveau avec PRESSURE, leur 4ème album, disponible le 16 octobre 2020.

C’était évident que pour les musiciens basés à Nashville la meilleure façon de traverser cette période turbulente était de créer de la musique. Et donc, le génie de la guitare, Tyler Bryant, et ses acolytes, le batteur Caleb Crosby, le guitariste Graham Whitford et leur très bon ami, le coproducteur et ingénieur Roger Allen Nichols se sont retranchés dans le home studio de Tyler pour enregistrer 13 morceaux Rock N’ Roll infusés de superbe blues et de groove puissant.

Avec peu de moyens, sans le bassiste Noah Denney (il a quitté le groupe en février 2020) mais avec beaucoup de talent, de créativité et d’ambition, le résultat est éblouissant. On n’attendait pas moins de leur part.

L’album débute avec Pressure extrêmement rapide et intense et se termine avec Coastin‘ une magnifique balade blues. Entre les deux, un mélange des chansons déjà existantes et de nouvelles écrits pendant le confinement. Des riffs prodigieux, des mélodies intemporels et honnêtes : Crazy Days, écrit et enregistré au début de la pandémie avec en Guest la femme de Tyler, Rebecca Lovell (la moitié du duo rock Larkin Poe qu’elle forme avec sa sœur Megan), Holdin’ My Breath avec Charlie Starr de Blackberry Smoke, l’hymne de stades –Wildside ou le sombre et plein d’émotion Like an Old Me.

Cette fois c’est via Zoom que j’ai eu le plaisir de discuter avec Tyler Bryant, assis au milieu de guitares dans son studio. Nous avons parlé bien sûr musique et guitares mais aussi de ses nouvelles occupations, de sa nouvelle garde-robe, de ses idoles…  

Évidement déçu qu’il n’a pas pu faire le déplacement Paris, il nous a promis de revenir dès que possible pour un concert encore plus fabuleux.

Comment ça va Tyler ?

Tyler : Ça va bien. Vu les circonstances, les nouvelles sont plutôt bonnes.

Comment est la vie à Nashville en ce moment ?

Tyler : C’est OK. Je passe mon temps à la maison mais rester à la maison toute l’été c’était du jamais vu pour n’importe quel musicien habitué d’être en tournée.

J’ai profité pour passer du temps avec ma femme, travailler à l’extérieur, dans le jardin, faire des choses à la maison, mais j’ai hâte de reprendre la route et jouer du Rock N’Roll.

Votre nouvel album Pressure sort le 16 octobre 2020. Est-ce que le confinement vous a boosté pour écrire cet album ?

Tyler : Oui, absolument. Comme toutes nos dates de tournée ont été annulées, on s’est demandé ce qu’allons faire. On avait besoin de quelque chose pour dépenser notre énergie et surtout quelque chose qui nous aide à rester positifs.

La musique m’a toujours aidé à élever mon esprit et nous en avions besoin plus que jamais.

On avait besoin de faire cet album plus qu’on a eu besoin de faire un album dans le passé et ce sentiment a été très inspirant sur l’ensemble du processus. Ce n’était pas seulement comme, allez on va faire un autre disque. C’était quelque chose que nous devions faire pour notre santé mentale.   

Comment vous avez écrit ces 13 chansons ?

Tyler : On écrit toujours des chansons, on essaie toujours de rester créatifs. En fait, on est entré dans le processus d’enregistrement de cet album avec 37 chansons, puis on a réduit à 13 et j’ai continué à écrire en studio. 

Hitchhiker a été écrite en studio. Crazy Days a été écrite au début de la pandémie. C’était avant qu’on sache vraiment comment tout cela va se terminer et d’ailleurs, on ne le sait toujours pas.

Il y a des chansons qui ont été fortement influencées par tout ce qui se passe. Il y a des chansons qui ont été écrites avant mais semblent vraiment s’adapter à ce qui se passe actuellement.

Holdin’ My Breath, Pressure, Backbone ont toutes été écrites avant la pandémie mais vous penseriez qu’ils ont été écrits sur cette époque que nous vivions… Automatique a été écrite la veille de confinement à Nashville.

Sur Holdin’ My Breath, tu espères des jours meilleurs (Better Days) …

Tyler : Je sais que les gens disent qu’on a eu comme une prémonition, mais la vérité est que les gens attendent des jours meilleurs depuis le début de l’humanité. On a toujours eu l’espoir. On a senti vraiment approprié de mettre cette chanson sur l’album parce qu’on attend tous les jours meilleurs surtout en ce moment.

Comment est venu l’idée d’inviter Charlie Starr de Blackberry Smoke pour cette chanson ?

Tyler : Ce n’est pas un secret pour personne que Noah, notre ancien bassiste a quitté le groupe en février. Noah faisait toujours les harmonies, alors je me suis demandé qui est l’un des meilleurs chanteurs que je connaisse et Charlie était l’une des personnes qui m’ont venu à l’esprit.

Je suis un énorme fan de Blackberry Smoke. J’ai beaucoup cuisiné à l’extérieur pendant cette pandémie et j’écoutai souvent Blackberry Smoke. Un soir, je lui envoie un texto et je lui ai demandé s’il voulait chanter sur la chanson et il m’a renvoyé les voix. La chanson est devenue tellement plus cool avec sa voix.

Tu as beaucoup travaillé le riff sur cette chanson aussi

Tyler : Oui, c’est vrai – c’est aussi le luxe d’enregistrer à la maison car je pouvais faire mon propre emploi du temps pour faire les choses comme je les voulais. J’ai joué le solo des multiples fois parce que je voulais avoir la bonne émotion là-dessous. Pour certaines chansons, il a fallu plus de temps.  Mais pour d’autres chansons comme Coasting nous l’avons joué une seule fois et elle était prête.

Pour le premier single Crazy Days, tu as invité ta femme Rebecca de poser sa voix. C’est votre premier enregistrement officiel ensemble ?

Tyler : Nous avons enregistré beaucoup de chansons ensemble. En fait, elle chante sur une chanson, sur notre album éponyme, Magnetic Field, mais vraiment sur le fond. Là c’est la première fois qu’elle est featured sur une chanson de Shakedown. Sa voix a tellement ajouté sur cet enregistrement. 

En fait, c’est la même chose pour laquelle j’ai demandé à Charlie de chanter sur le disque. Je pensais à qui est la meilleure chanteuse que je connaisse et je me suis dit oh, c’est ma femme et elle est à l’étage. Je peux aller lui demander. Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir de l’impliquer dans quelques chansons sur cet album. Elle chante aussi un peu à Hitchhiker et un peu sur Misery.

Like the Old Me est une superbe chanson, sombre et nostalgique. Comment tu as écrit cette chanson ?

Tyler : J’adore cette chanson. Elle a été inspirée par la guitare que j’ai eue juste avant la pandémie. C’est un résonateur rose. J’ai accordé la guitare sur un accord bizarre et quelques minutes plus tard la chanson est en quelque sorte tombée du ciel.

J’ai enregistré la démo et je l’ai faite écouter aux gars du groupe et je l’ai envoyé à Roger aussi. Et tout le monde a dit que c’est une chanson assez cool, nous devrions le faire.  Je pense qu’au fur et à mesure que la pandémie se déroule, plus j’écoute cette chanson, plus je la connecte à cette situation car au moment où je l’ai écrite, je ne savais pas vraiment sur quoi j’écrivais. Je ne me suis pas rendu compte d’où elle venait, elle était juste là.

Lorsque nous avons enregistré cette chanson, il a été très important pour nous d’essayer de capturer la vulnérabilité dans les paroles. C’est juste l’histoire de quelqu’un qui a perdu quelque chose qui signifiait beaucoup pour lui et qu’il veut le/la faire revenir. Que ce soit une personne ou un sentiment, c’est difficile pour moi de dire ce qui est vraiment. Je me suis mis dans cette chanson en différentes situations, en fonction de ce qui se passe autour de moi. J’espère que l’auditeur est capable de faire la même chose. 

Et Misery – quelle est son histoire ?

Tyler : J’écoutais beaucoup de musique country classique et j’aime beaucoup la façon de raconter des histoires dans les chansons de la musique country de la vieille école.

Donc, je voulais écrire une chanson sur le chagrin et l’alcool.  J’ai écrit Misery, mais au lieu de la mettre dans la musique country, je l’ai mis sur le blues parce que je pense que le blues colle bien à cette histoire.

Wildside, c’est un hymne de stades

Tyler : Oui, nous avons juste imaginé les nuits épiques que nous avons passé dans les petits clubs ou dans les stades quand les gens chantaient nos chansons.

La totalité de l’album a été enregistré dans ton home studio, comment vous êtes-vous organisé ?

Tyler : J’ai passé quelques semaines à tout préparer avant de commencer. J’ai acheté du matériel, trouver tous dont on avait besoin. Mon très bon ami Roger Allen Nichols a apporté des choses aussi. Une fois que nous avons commencé, c’était vraiment très fun et facile.

Ce n’était pas si difficile d’enregistrer à la maison. Il y a eu quelques blocages, mais on a toujours trouvé des moyens de les contourner ; on a trouvé différentes façons d’arriver au résultat que nous voulions obtenir.

Donc, certaines limitations sont devenues inspirantes parce qu’il fallait sortir des sentiers battus.

Qui joue à la basse ?

Tyler : C’est moi. J’ai joué à basse sur tout sauf sur Backbone ou c’est Graham qui joue car il a écrit cette ligne de basse. C’était vraiment fun.

Vous allez recruter un nouveau bassiste ou vous resterez un trio ?

Tyler : On a déjà recruté quelqu’un. Nous allons le présenter à tout le monde le 16 octobre 2020, le jour de la sortie de l’album, quand nous allons diffuser un concert en direct sur notre site web.

Nous avons enregistré notre premier concert live de l’année. Avec du beau son, un bel éclairage. Cela va être une occasion pour nos fans de se connecter avec nous dans le chat. On sera en mesure en mesure de parler avec eux et de se rapprocher le plus possible d’eux.

Ce sera le premier show de Shakedown sans Noah. Il faut dire que le départ de Noah s’est passé aussi bien que possible, Noah et moi on a passé beaucoup de temps ensemble.C’est bien qu’il ait pu poursuivre sa passion et nous devons continuer aussi.

Nous avons fait ce que nous avions à faire et une partie était en quelque sorte de nous réinventer un peu avec cet album.

Je vois beaucoup de guitares autour de toi, quelle a été ta première guitare ? 

Tyler : Une guitare acoustique acheté dans une brocante à 3 dollars. C’était assez pour moi pour faire comme Elvis Presley. Ma première guitare électrique que j’ai vraiment adorée était une Fender Stratocaster.

Combien de guitares tu as en ce moment ?

Tyler : Entre ma femme et moi, nous avons plus de 50. Et la majorité sont à moi. Il y a au moins 40 guitares autour de moi en ce moment. J’ai un petit problème. 

Il n’y a pas suffisamment d’espace

Tyler : Justement, c’est une des choses que j’ai faites pendant cette quarantaine. J’ai construit des étagères pour tous nos étuis à guitare.

Tu as commencé très jeune à jouer de la guitare. Quel est ton premier souvenir musical ?

Tyler : Je pense que mon premier souvenir musical est de voir une vidéo d’Elvis Presley et c’est là que j’ai pris ma décision d’avoir une guitare. Un autre souvenir vraiment important est quand j’ai rencontré Roosevelt Twitty qui est devenu mon mentor et mon meilleur ami. Je l’ai rencontré dans un magasin de musique et je n’oublierai jamais la première fois quand je l’ai entendu jouer. C’était la première fois quand j’entendais du blues et la première fois quand j’entendais de la musique qui venais directement de son âme.

Tu avais quel âge à l’époque ?

Tyler : J’avais 11 ans. J’étais un gamin. C’était quelqu’un de très spécial dans ma vie.

Un artiste que tu écoutes en boucle en ce moment.

Tyler : Guy Clark. Il a des chansons brillantes. Je n’arrête pas d’écouter une chanson qui s’appelle LA Freeway. Une très belle chanson. C’est une vieille chanson. Il est décédé, mais je pense qu’il est l’un des meilleurs songwriter de tous les temps. Une autre chanson hallucinante s’appelé est Desperados waiting for a train. J’adore son écriture. 

Tu as travaillé sur l’album de reprises acoustiques de Larking Poe qui sortira en novembre. Tu as déjà pensé de faire le même style d’album ?

Tyler : Personnellement, je n’ai jamais eu beaucoup d’envie de faire des reprises, juste parce que je passe tellement de temps à faire mes propres chansons. Mais, je pense que je pourrais le faire si je voulais vraiment.

Si je devais faire un album acoustique, je voudrais le faire plutôt avec des chansons qui parlent de l’endroit d’où je viens, des chansons sur mon enfance, sur des gens importants pour moi, certaines de leurs histoires, des histoires personnelles. J’aimerais vraiment faire un disque comme ça un jour.

Mais je veux dire que c’était un plaisir et un honneur d’enregistrer ce disque pour Megan et Rebecca. L’album de Shakedown a été le premier disque que nous avons fait dans mon home studio et enregistrer en tant ingénieur l’album de Larking Poe était vraiment fun. C’est cool d’être de l’autre côté du micro.

Ton fashion Icon?

Tyler : J’aime Patti Smith, Iggy Pop.

Et j’aime beaucoup le style de cowboys du Texas Ceux d’où je viens, ils ont toujours l’air si cool. Leurs vêtements sont naturellement décontractés parce qu’ils travaillent dur.

J’ai quelques paires de bottes de travail que j’ai eu là-bas et que j’ai rendu un peu plus cool. Je les portent quand je travaille à l’extérieur dans le jardin. Elles sont très bien, mais il est temps de monter sur scène.

Des nouveaux vêtements dans ta garde-robe ? 

Tyler : oui, en ce moment, je commande des vêtements chez Phix Clothing (ndlr : une marque britannique des vêtements pour hommes).

Beaucoup des vêtements que je porte dans les nouvelles photos de Shakedown viennent de chez eux. Ils sont vraiment cool.

J’ai acheté un nouveau jean à bootcut Levi’s. Je suis toujours un grand fan de bottes Jeffery West.

Je pense que même si je ne sors pas de chez moi, le fait de se réveiller et mettre des vêtements qui te donnent le sentiment d’être bien dans ta peau, cela inspire une meilleure journée. Nous sommes stylés dans cette maison !

Tu as découvert quelque chose de nouveau sur toi pendant le confinement ?

Tyler : J’ai toujours su que j’aime cuisiner et j’ai toujours su que j’aime faire des choses à l’extérieur, mais je n’ai jamais vraiment eu le temps à le faire parce que je suis normalement tout le temps sur la route.

Une chose que j’ai découvert vraiment, c’est que j’aime vraiment faire du barbecue. J’ai acheté un nouveau pour Rebecca et moi et on a beaucoup fait du barbecue. C’est amusant… Et faire du kayak. On aime faire du kayak et du camping – qui pouvais le savoir ?

Il y a un lac à proximité et donc on a pris le kayak pour traverser avec la tente, et on passait la nuit, on se réveillait le matin. Super fun !

J’ai appris aussi que j’ai aimé enregistrer d’autres artists autant que j’aime m’enregistrer. C’est vraiment gratifiant.

Nouveaux projets ?

Tyler : Oui, donc je travaille en ce moment avec Frankie Ballard. Il a une carrière de musicien country très réussie et son rêve a toujours été de faire un album gospel. Je l’aide à faire cet album. C’est juste une façon pour moi de continuer à muscler le fait de travailler dans mon studio.

Je suis vraiment fier de la façon dont ce disque se présente. C’est vraiment plein d’âme et d’émotion. J’ai hâte que les gens l’entendent. 

Et puis, j’écris plus de musique pour Shakedown, toujours en train de travailler sur des trucs avec Shakedown et j’essie de m’assurer que cette sortie de l’album va être quelque chose de vraiment spécial pour nos fans.

Des nouvelles pour la tournée ?

Tyler : Nous sommes à la recherche d’options, mais en Amérique il y a tellement de choses à déterminer. Nous n’avons pas encore beaucoup d’informations, mais j’ai hâte de retourner sur scène comme tu peux l’imaginer.

Un dernier mot sur l’album

Tyler : Je pense que Pressure est notre façon de profiter d’une situation, de faire quelque chose de bon, et j’espère que ce disque est en mesure d’aider les gens à s’échapper de tout ce qui se passe en ce moment. J’espère que nos fans vont aimer !

After the excellent Truth and Lies released last year, TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN strike hard again with PRESSURE, their 4th album, available on October 16, 2020.  It was obvious that for Nashville-based musicians the best way to get through this turbulent period was to create music.

So, the guitar genius, Tyler Bryant, and his bandmates, the drummer Caleb Crosby and the guitarist Graham Whitford together with their very good friend, the co-producer and engineer Roger Allen Nichols, hunkered down in the front man’s home studio to record 13 Rock N’ Roll tracks infused with beautiful blues and amazing groove. With small budget, without the bassist Noah Denney (he left the band in February 2020) but with a lot of talent, creativity and ambition, the result is dazzling. No less was expected of them.

The album starts with Pressure extremely fast and intense and ends with Coastin’ a blues ride. In between, a mixture of existing songs and new writings during lockdown. Prodigious riffs, timeless and honest melodies: Crazy Days, written and recorded at the beginning of the pandemic with Tyler‘s wife Rebecca Lovell (half of the rock duo Larkin Poe she forms with her sister Megan), Holdin’ My Breath featuring Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smoke, Wildside, astadium anthem or the dark and emotional Like an Old Me.

This time it was via Zoom that we had the pleasure of chatting with Tyler Bryant, sitting in the middle of his guitars in his studio. We talked of course about music and guitars but also about his new occupations, his new wardrobe, his idols …  Obviously disappointed that he could not make the trip to Paris, he promised to return as soon as possible for an even more fabulous concert.

How are you Tyler? Everything ok?

Tyler: I am doing wonderful. Everything Ok, giving the circumstances we are pretty good.

How is Nashville life in this moment?

Tyler: Nashville is good. I ‘ve just been trying to do the most of being home. Staying home for a summer is quite of unheard for any touring musicians.

I’ve been enjoying spending time with my wife, working outside in the yard, doing home things but I definitely I look forward to get on the road playing Rock N’ Roll.

Your new album Pressure is released on 16.10.2020. Will you say that lockdown boosted you to write music

Tyler: Yes, absolutely. Whenever all our tour dates were cancelled, we were asking what we’re going we do. We needed to put our energy into in something that keep us positive. You know music is   that thing that always helped me to uplift myself and we need it more than ever. We needed to make this record more then we even needed to make an album before and that was what was so inspiring about the whole process. We weren’t just making another record; it was something that we had to do for our sanity.  I love the record. We had a blast making it too

What is the story of these 13 songs?

Tyler: Well, if you know us for a second, we are always writing songs, we are always trying to stay creative. Basically, we entered into this process with 37 songs and then we narrow down to 13 and I kept writing in the studio.

A song like Hitchhiker was written in the studio. Crazy Days was written at the start of the pandemic, that was before we really knew how it is going to unravel and actually, we aren’t really figure it how is it going to unravelled.

There were certain songs that were strongly influenced by everything what’s going on and certain songs written before and seems like they kind of fit to what going on.

Holdin’ My Breath, Pressure, Backbone all were written before pandemic… Automatic was written the day before the Nashville lockdown. There were certain songs that were definitely written before and some of them like Pressure or Holdin’ my breath you would think that they were written for or about these times that we were living, it but they were written prior to.

The verse on Holdin’ my breath is keep saying “Better Days”

Tyler: I know that people say that we had like a premonition or something but the truth is that people have been waiting for better days since the beginning of humanity. It is always something that we got to be hopeful for and it felt really appropriate to put that song on the album. We all highly appreciate some better days right now.

How did you get the idea to do the vocal with Charlie Starr?

Tyler: It’s no secret that Noah left the band in February. Noah was always doing the high harmonies, so I ask myself who is one of the best singers I know and Charlie was one of the people that came in my mind. I am a huge Blackberry Smoke fan.

I’ve been doing a lot of cooking outside during this pandemic and cooking outside always turn on Blackberry Smoke, I listen to them. One night, I text him and ask him would you sing on this song and he send me back the vocal. He made the song so much cooler to me.

It looks that you work a lot the guitar riff on this song?

Tyler: Yes, that’s right – this is also the luxury of recording at home, is that I was fixing my own schedule as far as getting things the way I wanted them. I played the guitar solo a tone of times because I just wanted to have the right emotion behind it. Certain songs it took more time.  But you know on other songs like Coasting we play it once and it was done.

For Crazy Days you invited Rebecca, your wife to sing on it. Is it first time when you record officially with her?

Tyler: We have recorded a lot of songs together. She sings on a song, on our self-titled album, the song is Magnetic Field, but it is very thin on the background. This is the first time she is been featured on a Shakedown song. Her voice has added so much on that recording.

Actually, it is part the same thing why I have asked Charlie to sing on the record. I am thinking who is the best singer I know oh, it’s my wife and she is upstairs. I just can go ask her. We had so much fun have her being involved in a couple of songs on this album. She also sings a little bit to Hitchhiker and a little bit on Misery as well.

A song that I love is Like the old me is very dark and nostalgic. How did you write it?

Tyler: I love that song as well. That song was inspired by this guitar that I got right before the pandemic. It’s a pink resonator. I tuned the guitar to a weird tunning and few minutes later that song was like kind of falling out from the sky. I recorded the demo and make see it to the guys from the band and I send it to Roger also. Everyone said that’s a pretty cool song we should do it.

I think that as the pandemic has going on, the more I listen to that song the more I related to cause at the time I wrote it I did not really know what I was writing about. I couldn’t think where it was coming from, it was just there.

When we recorded that song, it was definitely very important for us to try to capture the vulnerability in the lyrics. That’s just the story of someone who lost something that meant a lot to them and they wanted back. Whether that be something that was inside them or a person or a feeling that they had. it’s hard for me to say what’s is really about when I was into it. I put myself into it in different places depending on what’s going on around me. I hope that the listener is able to do the same thing.

And Misery?

Tyler: I was listening to a lot of classic country music and I love love love how in old school country the songs are just the story telling songs. So, I wanted to write a heartbreak drinking song. I wrote Misery but instead of putting in country music I put it over blues because I think that the blues music sort of set the scene for that story.

Wildside, it’s a stadium anthem.

Tyler: That’s a huge sounding anthem, isn’t it? When we were recorded that one, we were just imagining that epic nights we had in a small club or in a stadium, when people were singing your songs back to you. I could just imagine being to a Shakedown show and everybody singing along. I’d love it

You recorded everything is your home studio, how did you organise yourself?

Tyler: I spent a couple of weeks preparing everything before we did it, buying gears, basically just trying to get all the things that we are going to need. My really good friend Roger Allen Nichols brought over some stuff too. Once we got started it was really fun and easy. It wasn’t a huge deal to be recorded at home. There were just a couple of road blocks but we always found ways around them; we found different ways to get to the destination we were get say we are getting through. So, some of the limitations actually became inspiring because you had to think outside the box.

Who play the bass parts?

Tyler:  It’s me. I played the bass on everything except on Backbone and Graham played bass on Backbone as he wrote that bass line. It was really fun to get to do.

Are you going to recruit someone to play bass you will remain a 3 pieces band?

Tyler: We already get someone at the bass. We will let everybody meet on the release day, on 16^th October. We were broadcasting a live performance our web site. We have recorded our first live show of the year. We recorded it beautifully, we had lighted beautifully and it is going to be a like Shakedown show that you can turn up to 10.

It will be an opportunity for our viewer to tune in and we are going to hanging up in the chat, so we will be able to talk to fans and get as close as we can to our fans during this time.

It will be the first time that the Shakedown is seen without Noah. The thing is that Noah’s departure went as good as it could had gone, Noah and I hang around during this time and it is all good. He had to chase a different passion and we have to keep going as well.

So, we have done what we had to do and I think that part of what we had to do was sort of reinvent ourselves with this album a little bit. Now, we are starting to think about playing live.

I see a lot of guitars around you, what was your first guitar?

Tyler: My first guitar was an acoustic guitar that came from a garage sell and it costs 3 dollars. It was enough for me to carrying around like Elvis Presley. My first electric guitar that I really love was a Fender Stratocaster.

How many guitars do you have in this moment?

Tyler: Between my wife and I we have over 50. And majority those are mine. There are at least 40 guitars within about 20 feet of me right now. I have a bit of a problem.

You do not have enough space…

Tyler: That’s one of the things I did during this quarantine. I built shelves for all our guitar cases.

You started very young to play guitar. What is your first musical memory?

Tyler: I think that my first musical memory is seeing a video of Elvis Presley and when I saw that video of Elvis, I made up my mind that I want to have a guitar. The second really important memory   is when I met Roosevelt Twitty who become my mentor and my best friend. I met him in a music shop and I’ll never forget hearing him playing for the first time. I was the first time, I was hearing blues, hearing music straight from someone soul like that.

How old you were at the time?

Tyler: I was 11 years old. I was a little kid. He was a very special person in my life.

Do you have an artist or an album that you are listening now to over and over again?

Tyler: I’ve been listening to a tone of Guy Clark. He has some brilliant songs. A song called LA Freeway – and I can’t stop listening to it I keep listening to it. Such a beautiful written song. It’s an old song. He passed away but I just think that this is one of the best song writers of all time. Another song is Desperados waiting for a train which is mind blowing. Lyrically, I just love his down writing.

You contributed to the Larking Poe acoustic album which will be out next month. Have to thought of doing same style of album with The Shakedown?

Tyler: Personally, I’ve never had much of a desire to do covers, just because I spend so much of my time making my own songs. I’ve just never done a tone of covers; I mean I think I could if I really wanted.

I think that that if I was going to make an acoustic album, I would want to be with songs about where I came from, songs about my childhood, about the people that were really important to me growing in up, some of their stories. I’d really like to make a record like that one day. It’s goldmine mind actually.

I would say that it was a really pleasure and an honour to get to record that record for Megan and Rebecca because the Shakedown record was the first record that we made in my home studio than getting to record in engineer that Larking Poe record was really fun. It’s cool to be on the other side of the microphone.

Do you have a fashion icon?

Tyler: I love Patti Smith. I love Iggy Pop.

I really love a lot of the Texas cowboy style too. The farmers where I am from, they always look so cool. Their clothes are naturally distress because they are working hard men. I’ve picked up a few pairs of work boots that I got them cooler and I wear them out them working outside in the yard. They are looking great but it’s time to play shows again.

Some new arrivals in your wardrobe?

Tyler: I order some clothes from this company named Phix Clothing. The lot of the stuff that I am wearing in the new Shakedown photos are from them. They are really cool. I am still a  huge fan of Jeffery West boots. I bought some new Levi’s bootcut jeans, a nice pair of pin straight pants.

I do think that even if I am not gonna leave my house, waking up and putting on clothes that make you feel good about yourself, inspire to have a better day. We keep it stylish in this house!

Did you discover something new about yourself during the lockdown?

Tyler: I’ve always known that I love to cook and I’ve always known that I love to do things outside but I have just never really got to do that at home because you know I am normally all the time on the road.

The one thing I really uncover is that I really love to barbecue. I bought a new smoker for Rebecca and I have been barbecuing a lot. That’s fun… And kayaking. We like to kayaking and camp – who knows about it?

There is a lake nearby and we took the kayak to cross with the tent and set up the tent and spent the night and we woke up the next day. That’s was really fun!

One of the things, I learned is that I enjoyed recording other people as much as I enjoy recording myself. That’s been really rewarding as well.

New projects then…

Tyler: Yes, I am working with right now with Frankie Ballard, he has a very successful country music career and he always has been his dream to make a gospel album. I am helping him making this album. It is just a way for me to flex the muscles that I’ve been working on in the studio and I am really proud how this record is turning out. It is really soulful. I cant’s wait that people hear it.

I am writing more Shakedown music, always working on stuff with Shakedown and trying to make sure that this album release is going to be something really special for our fans.

How about the tour did you already planned something for next year?

Tyler: We definitely looking at options but in America there is so much to be determined. We do not have a lot of information yet, but I can’t wait to get out and play, as you can imagine.

A final word about the album!

Tyler: I think that Pressure is our way of taking advantage of a situation, making something good out of it, and I hope that this record is able to help people to kind of escape of everything what’s going on for a few moments. I hope that our fans enjoy it.
