Le 17 février au Petit Bain à Paris, les hollandais de DEWOLFF nous ont fait vivre un véritable saut dans le temps, un plongeon dans le rock blues psychédélique des années 70s. Un concert qui a renforcé mes convictions que les styles musicaux reviennent toujours sans jamais vraiment disparaitre (comme la mode). Surtout, quand ils sont joués par de groupes d’une excellente qualité. Comme DEWOLFF.
Ce lundi 17 février, c’était le premier concert de leur tournée pour défendre l’album Tascam Tapes, dont nous avons parlé ici il y a quelques semaines. Un album totalement écrit et enregistré sur la route, à l’arrière de leur van ou en coulisses pendant la tournée précédente. Vous suivez toujours ?
Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin ou Deep Purple, un brin de nostalgie planait dans salle située dans la petite péniche en bords de Seine. Et si de mon côté, je n’avais pas mis mes pantalons patte d’éph et mes santiags, des nombreux fans avait reconstitué le bon look de l’époque.
La soirée commence avec Dawn Brothers : Levi Vis (chanteur/ bassiste), Bas van Holt (chanteur/guitariste), Rafael Schwiddessen (batteur) et Rowan de Vos (clavier) sont néerlandais aussi. Des jolies harmonies vocales, un clavier très présent, des mélodies rythmées, du classique roots rock U.S, mixé avec un peu de country et de la soul, leur son retro n’est pas très éloigné de celui de DEWOLFF et surtout, il est être très très bon. Souriants et communicatives, ils s’étonnent que le public français soit sage, écoute avec attention et ne parle pas (« comme au Pays Bas ») pendent les solos prolongés. Une belle surprise.
C’est le tour de DEWOLFF de faire leur apparition. Habillés dans leur costumes nudie (ils nous avaient parlé dans l’interview de la difficulté de les trouver) blancs, avec de broderies – des fleurs, un mariachi sur le revers de la veste ou le mot « El Papi » écrit sur le dos du chanteur, pantalons patte d’éph, bottes en croco et cheveux longs. L’effet vintage n’est pas mal du tout.
Les Néerlandais débutent leur set par Made it to 27 extrait du nouvel album, très dansant et dynamique et ça décoiffe tout de suite. Blood Meridian, mon morceau préféré de l’album, suit de près, super funky & groovy. On a tous envie de bouger.
Pendant presque 2 heures de concert euphorique, les frères Pablo (chanteur/guitariste) & Luka Van de Poel (batterie) et Robin Piso (l’orgue), nous transporterons dans une autre époque, celle des guitares classiques de Hendrix et de Led Zeppelin et des claviers magiques de The Doors.
Le set list donnera la priorité aux chansons du dernier album : Blood Meridian One and Two, Awesomeness of Love, Nothing’s changing ou Love is such a waste parsemé avec des anciens morceaux comme Sugar Moon et ses des riffs savoureux ou Medicine et son blues authentique.
Un mélange réjouissant de blues, jazz, rock et des sonorités soul/funk très efficaces que le public accueil avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme.
Pablo cheveux dans les yeux, maitre de sa voix et de sa guitare, a vraiment l’allure rock star old school. Il exécute ses solos avec dextérité à genoux , debout et même les 2 pieds sur l’orgue. Il s’exerce aussi au français et c’est adorable. Robin fabrique des sons époustouflants avec son l’orgue Hammond qui imprime vraiment ce côté vintage psychédélique au sonorités blues rock. Je pense que c’est la première fois quand j’étais aussi impressionné par cet instrument.
Luka ultra énergique derrière se futs, jongle avec ses baguettes et l’alterne la voix avec son frère ainé.
De longs passages s’enchainent, chaque morceau est rallongé avec de solos, chaque musicien montre la maitrise de son instrument.
Le son un peu rugueux et brouillon qu’on retrouve sur Tascam Tapes est bien reproduit en live.
Pablo et Robin se lancent souvent dans de duo guitare – orgue fantastiques, des vrais bataille musicales et on a du mal à designer un gagnant.
Un rappel très rallongé mettra fin au concert tout en beauté. Un vrai régal.
DeWolff ont réussi à nous offrir un vrai revival seventies, ingénieux et différent de ce que nous pouvons écouter et voir en ce moment. L’ambiance n’est pas retombée une seule seconde pendant le show. Le trio nous a offert une démonstration d’énergie et de pêche fabuleuse.
Bravo aux deux groupes ! Une excellente soirée 100% rock hollandais !

On February 17 at Le Petit Bain, Paris, the Dutch band, DEWOLFF, made us live a real back in time moment, a plunge into the psychedelic blues rock of the 70s. A concert that reinforced my belief that musical styles are always coming back (like fashion styles) without ever really disappearing. Especially, when they are performed by bands of excellent quality. Like the trio DEWOLFF, the headliner of this evening.
And tonight, in Paris, it was the first concert of their tour to defend their beautiful album Tascam Tapes that we introduce here some weeks ago, an album that was entirely written and recorded on the road, in the back of a van or backstage during the previous tour. Are you still following?
Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, a touch of nostalgia haunting the small venue located on the banks of the Seine. I did not wear my flare pants and my vintage boots, but in the room a lot of fans were having some great 70s outfits.
The evening starts with Dawn Brothers: Levi Vis (singer/bass player), Bas van Holt (singer/guitarist), Rafael Schwiddessen (drummer) et Rowan de Vos (keyboards) are coming from Nederland also. Pretty vocal harmonies, a very present keyboard, rhythmic melodies, classic roots rock U.S. mixed with some country, soul vibes, their retro sound is not very far from that of DEWOLFF and it’s great.
Smiles and goods communication, they are surprised that the French audience is wise, listens to attentively and does not speak (“as the Dutch”) during the extended solos. A nice surprise.
It’s DEWOLFF‘s turn to make their entrance. Wearing their nudie costumes (they had told us in the interview about the difficulty of having them) white, with embroideries, big flowers, “El Papi” written on Pablo’s back, flare pants, croc boots and long hair. The retro effect is not bad at all.
The Dutch start their set with Made it to 27 out of the new album, a very dancing and dynamic track and the show is immediately dazzling. Blood Meridian, my favourite track from the album is funky and groovy. We all want to dance.
And for almost 2 hours of euphoric concert, the brothers Pablo (vocalist/guitarist) – Luka Van de Poel (drums) and Robin Piso (organ), will transport us to another era, the one of the classical guitars of Hendrix and or Led Zeppelin and magic keyboards of The Doors.
The set list will give priority to the songs from the last album: Blood Meridian One and Two, Awesomeness of Love, Nothing’s changing or Love is such a waste dotted with old songs like Sugar Moon and its tasty riffs or Medicine and its authentic blues. A joyful mix of blues, jazz, rock and very effective soul/funk sounds that the audience welcomes with great enthusiasm.
Pablo, hair in the eyes, is master of his voice and guitar and he really looks like old school rock star. He performs his riffs with dexterity even on his knees or standing on the organ. He also practices French and he is adorable. Robin create amazing sounds with his Hammond organ that really amplify that psychedelic vintage side to their blues rock sounds. I think this is the first time when I was so impressed by this instrument. Luka ultra-energetic behind his drum kit, juggles with his drum sticks and alternates his voice with his older brother.
Long passages follow, each track is lengthened with solos, each musician shows his skill on his instrument. The sound is a bit rough, the same that we find on Tascam Tapes. Pablo and Robin often embark on fantastic guitar-organ duets, real musical battles and it’s hard to design a winner.
The final will be also marked with 2 extraordinary long songs. Perfect performance.
DeWolff has managed to offer us a true seventies revival, ingenious and different from what we can listen to and see on the musical scene right now. The great ambience didn’t go down for a second during all show and the trio gave us a fabulous demonstration of energy and motivation.
Well done to both bands! 100% rock made in Nederland.
