En lisant le communiqué de presse qui annonçait le nouvel album de Rammstein, j’ai cherché le nom de l’album, mais je n’ai rien trouvé. Car, en fait, il n’y a pas de titre. Il semble que la stratégie du groupe allemand pour leur retour après 10 ans d’absence, est de cultiver le mystère et laisser la place aux interprétations. Pas d’explications, pas d’interviews, en gros, on ne sait pas à quoi s’attendre et tant mieux car j’aime les surprises.
La pochette épurée représente une allumette sur un fond blanc qui demande presque à être allumé. C’est une invitation, une promesse du groupe allemand de mettre le feu, comme d’habitude ?
Est-ce qu’ on peut qualifier cet 7ème album, d’album éponyme justement pour couronner les 25 ans d’existence flamboyante qui garantit l’essence même du groupe ? Ou c’est tout simplement un album sans titre, qui pourra cacher un nouveau départ?
Je suis parti à la recherche des indices et plus précisément au Club Silencio à Paris, le très intimiste club fondée et conçu par David Lynch, où nous avons été convie pour une première écoute de l’album, dans une ambiance qui s’est avéré très propice pour un tel événement.
Et autant vous dire dès le début, la première impression est que cet opus est tout ce qu’on aime et on attend du sextet allemand : 11 titres attaquant les registres classiques Rammstein, qui integrent des éléments assez surprenants – comme un coté plus mélodique, des synthés plus appuyés et mise en avant, du piano et du violon. Tout en faisant attention de rester fidèles à leur métal industriel qui les a rendus célèbres.
L’album débute avec deux des meilleurs morceaux « Deutschland » et « Radio », énergiques et grandioses, déjà sortis en single et accompagnés par des excellents videoclips.
Le premier « Deutschland » mélange des synthés forts et hypnotisants, de guitares rugissantes, une voix sobre et envoutante créant un sort d’hymne poignant dédié à l’Allemagne, « meine liebe ». Et justement ce morceau est mis en images à l’aide un vrai court métrage qui livre une incursion controversée dans l’histoire mouvementé de L’Allemagne, sombre ou triomphante.
« Radio » adopte une cadence quasi militaire, rythme électro infernal, synthé d’inspirations 80’s à volonté et des guitares fortes, accompagné par un vidéo noir et blanc qui semble raconter aussi un morceau d’histoire : l’apparition de la radio qui a rendu accro mais aussi la liberté à une population opprimé.
« Zeig Dich» – pesant et sombre est introduit par de chants grégoriens tandis que l’enthousiaste « Ausländer » propose une électro dance façon boite de nuit avec une refrain catchy et entrainant et un melting pot de mots en anglais, français, italien « c’est la vie, mon chéri, ciao ragazza, mi amor », même si on ne comprend pas exactement le message.
« Sex » est un croisement de guitares- batterie – synthés qui me fait penser à Depeche Mode (d’ailleurs, il y a quelques jours ils ont sorti la video de leur cover de Stripped) mais aussi à Muse.
On baisse le tempo à la moitié de l’album avec « Puppe » : une narration sur fond de guitares acoustiques et piano. Le groupe dévoile une façade plus mélodique et plus douce qu’on ne connait pas vraiment. « Puppe » est une ballade triste et poétique qui semble cacher quelque chose d’horrible qu’on s’attend surgir à n’importe quel moment. D’ailleurs bien illustré par le chant de Lindermann. Dommage que je ne comprenne pas l’allemand.
Guitares saccadées sur « Was Ich Liebe », suivi par « Diamant » un morceau court et tendre qui continue les moments slow de l’album, une balade façon berceuse avec guitares douces et synthés. Avec « Weit Weg » et « Tatoo » on revient au classique Rammstein, des riffs monstrueux et accrocheurs, claviers lourds et prestation vocale sombre.
Pour clôturer « Halloman », qui invite dans une ambiance diabolique avec une ligne de basse forte, solos rallongés, synthés abrasifs, batterie puissante et une voix glaçante qui semble raconter une histoire dramatique, très cinématographique.
Conclusion, après 10 ans, Rammstein se tient à leur véritable force et maitrise l’art dans lequelle ils excellent : livrer de la puissance musicale théâtrale avec du grotesque, du fun et du flou. On ne change pas une équipe qui gagne. Et tant mieux car moi j’adore.

By reading the press release of Rammstein’s new album, I was looking for the name of the album, but I have not found it. Because in fact there is no title. It seems that the strategy of the German band for their return after 10 years of absence was to cultivate the mystery and leave room for interpretations. No explanations, no interviews, basically it is unclear what we have to expect and much better because it’s fun.
The minimalist cover artwork is representing a match on white background almost asking to be turned on. It’s an invitation, a promise of the German group to set us on fire?
Shall we qualify this 7th album, as a self-titled album, highlighting the top of their 25 years of flamboyant existence which guarantees the essence of the band? Or is it simply an album without a title – “Untitled”- that can bring something totally new?
Well, I went to look out for some clues and more precisely to the Club Silencio in Paris, the very intimate club founded and designed by David Lynch, where we were invited for a first listen of the album, in an atmosphere that turned out to be very adapted to such an event.
And to tell you from the beginning, the first impression is that this album is all the best we love and we expect from the German sextet. 11 oustanding tracks attacking classic Rammstein while incorporating enough surprising elements – as a more melodic side, more up to front synths with piano and violin on it. And all this, being careful to stay faithful to their industrial metal that made them so famous.
The album starts with the two of the best songs on the album, “Deutschland” and “Radio”, energetic and grandiose, already released as singles and accompanied by excellent videos.
The first “Deutschland” mixing strong and hypnotic synths, roaring guitars, dark sober mesmerizing vocals creating a sort of poignant anthem dedicated to Germany, “meine liebe”. And precisely this song is put in images with a short film that delivers a controversial incursion in the moved Germany’s history – triumphant or dark.
“Radio” adopts a quasi-military pace, hellish electro beats, 80’s synths inspirations at will and strong guitars, accompanied by a black & white video which seems to narrate also a piece of history: the apparition of the radio that got hooked and in the same time liberate an oppressed population.
“Zeig Dich” – heavy and dark is introduced by of Gregorian chants while the enthusiastic “Ausländer” offers an electro dance nightclub style with catchy chorus and a melting pot of words in English, French, Italian « c’est la vie, mon chéri, ciao ragazza, mi amor », even if the message is quite blurry.
“Sex” is a crossover of guitars-drums -synths that makes me think of Depeche Mode (besides a few days ago they released the video of their “Stripped” cover from 98) or of Muse.
We lower the tempo at the half of the album with “Puppe” that brings narrative vocals on background of acoustic guitars and piano. The band unveils more melodic and sweeter side that we did not really heard before. ““Puppe” is a sad and poetic ballad that seems to hide something terrible that is expected to come up at any time. Fact well illustrated by Lindermann’s vocal performance. Too bad that I don’t understand German.
Jerky guitars on “Was Ich Liebe”, followed by “Diamond”, which continues the slow part of the album, a ballad style lullaby with soft guitars, synths, a short and tender song. With “Weit Weg” and “Tatoo” we go back to classic Rammstein, monstrous and catchy riffs, heavy keyboards.
To close the album “Halloman”, that invites us in a diabolical atmosphere with strong bass lines, long solos, abrasive synths, powerful drums and a chilling voice that seems telling a dramatic story. Very cinematic.
In the end, after 10 years, Rammstein keeps their real strength and mastery of their art in which they exceed: deliver the theatrical musical power with the grotesque, the fun and the blurry side (because of German). Never change a winning team. And so much better as I love it.
