BADFLOWER – High Energy and Emotion at La Maroquinerie, Paris 05/04/2019 – concert review

“Hey, wanna see what happens when I mix Xanax, blow and a MacBook Pro?” – Badflower -“xANAx”

Et oui, nous avons bien vu (avec nos propres yeux) et entendu (avec nos propres oreilles), l’effet explosif de ce mélange, le 5 Avril 2019 à la Maroquinerie, Paris. Et on a adoré.

Il y a quelques semaines, je vous présentais ici, Ok, I’m Sick, le premier album du groupe américain Badflower, un album qui m’avait vraiment interpelé dès la première écoute.

Eh bien, les californiens ne se sont pas fait attendre en Europe. Le voilà donc à Paris pour une journée promo, et leur premier concert ever. L’interview arrivera bientôt mais pour l’instant, quelques mots et beaucoup de photos sur ce superbe live.

Arrivée juste avant le début de leur concert, je trouve une salle assez calme et clairsemée. Mais une fois le concert démarré, avec justement, xANAx, la foule se métamorphose comme par miracle et commence à crier, à chanter et à sauter dans tous les sens.

Le ton grunge chaotique est donné tout de suite. Les quatre musiciens : Josh Katz (chant, guitare), Alex Espiritu (bass), Anthony Sonetti (batterie), Danny Hechter (guitare – qui remplace temporairement Joey Morrow), des véritables boules de feu, enchainent avec des morceaux rapides et tous aussi torrides.

Ce jour on célébrait le triste anniversaire de 25 ans depuis la mort de Kurt Cobain, et en voyant Josh se déchainer frénétiquement, je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de penser au regretté chanteur de Nirvana.

Le morceaux l’hyper énergétique, Die et ses nombreuses « Fuck » adressés à un certain président américain, ne fait que renforcer mes convictions. Pour The Jester, le public est réceptif et chante en cœur « Is there anyone out there looking out for me ? »

D’ailleurs, les fans semblent connaitre les paroles par cœur pour presque toutes les chansons, une vraie surprise pour le chanteur.

Heroin rencontre donc le même sort. Même accueil enthousiaste pour Ghost, ce récit brut et obsédant de la tentation du suicide, le single streamé à plus de 12 millions de fois sur. Josh est très ému car cette chanson lui tient vraiment à cœur.

Le guitariste Danny maitrise ses riffs abrasives et rapides, le bassiste Alex ne tiens pas en place, tout sourire et cheveux volants se déchaine sans répit et batteur Anthony injecte son tempo magistralement.

Le frontman charismatique déploie sa voix forte, remplie de colère ou de douce émotion, chasse ses démons et déballe ses sentiments. On peut lire une multitude émotions sur son visage.

45 minutes plus tard, le groupe disparait dans les coulisses pour revenir rapidement sous des fortes acclamations du public. D’abord seulement Josh et sa guitare pour interpréter la magnifique Move me, rejoint ensuite par ses acolytes. Solo batterie, le très beau et émouvant Promise me, et le très bluesy rock Girlfriend seront chantés live que pour la 3^ème dans leur carrière et elles sont magnifiées par l’enthousiasme du public.

Le groupe de Los Angeles apporte un mélange polyvalent et alternative avec du rock brut, grunge rageux et du groovy blues.

De bout en bout même si certaines chansons seront plus calmes, le high voltage se maintien toute au long de la soirée. Pareil pour un public qui réagit avec la même ardeur pour les nouvelles ou les anciennes chansons de l’EP Temper.

On assite à une session de thérapie profonde qui nous secoue fortement. Un rouleau -compresseur émotionnel : amour, haine, addiction, dépression, anxiété, relations toxiques et confuses, des messages livrés sur un fond musical puissant et intense.

Si l’album est génial, le show l’a été encore plus ce soir. Ces jeunes gens ont brillé de mille feux sur la petite scène de La Maroquinere. Leur avenir est prometteur. Bravo.

And Yes, we have seen (with our own eyes) and heard (with our own ears), the explosive effect of this mix, on April 5, 2019 at la Maroquinerie, Paris. And we loved it.

A few weeks ago, I presented here, OK, I’m Sick, the debut album of the American band Badflower, an album that had really impressed me at the first listen.

Well, the Californians were in Paris for a promo day, and their first ever concert. The interview will be posted soon but for now, a few words and many pictures of their awesome gig.

Arriving at the venue just before the start of their concert, I find a room quiet and bit more than half filled. But once the concert starts, with xANAx, the crowd transforms miraculously and starts to cry, sing and jump all over the place.

The four musicians: Josh Katz (vocals, guitar), Alex Espiritu (bass), Anthony Sonetti (drums), Danny Hechter (guitar – which temporarily replaces Joey Morrow), real fire balls on stage input a chaotic tone immediately and keep coming with fast and hot tracks.

This day we celebrated the sad anniversary of 25 years since the death of Kurt Cobain, and seeing Josh to unleash frantically, I couldn’t help but think of the regretted Nirvana singer. The hyper energetic Die, and the numerous fuck addressed to a certain American president, do reinforce my convictions.

For The Jester, the audience is receptive and singalong “Is there anyone out there looking out for me?”. Fans seem to know the lyrics by heart for almost all the songs, a real surprise for the singer.

Heroin receive the same warm welcome and once more, we could see the multitude of emotions on Josh’s face.

Same enthusiasm for Ghost, this story of a haunting tentative of suicide, the single streamed more than 12 million times on Spotify. Josh is very happy as this song is really important to him.

All along the gig, Danny manage perfectly his fast and abrasive riffs. Alex keeps smiling and with his windy hair keeps moving all over the place and Anthony injects his tempo masterfully behind the drums. The charismatic frontman deploys his powerful voice, filled with anger or sweet and full emotion, hunting his demons and unveil his feelings.

45 minutes later, the band disappears behind the scenes to quickly come back under strong cheers of the audience. First only Josh with his guitar to perform the magnificent Move me, then joined by his acolytes. Solo drums, the very beautiful and emotional Promise Me, and the very bluesy rock Girlfriend will be performed live for the 3rd in their career and they are magnified by the enthusiasm of the fans.

The LA band brings a versatile and alternative mix of rock, raging grunge and groovy blues. From start to finish even if some songs are slower, the high voltage is keeping up. Same goes for an audience that reacts with the same enthusiasm for the new or the older songs out of Temper EP.

We assisted to a deep therapy session that shakes us strongly. An emotional steamroller: love, hate, addiction, depression, anxiety or toxic relationships and confusing messages delivered on a powerful and intense musical background. If the album is great, the show was even more tonight. These young people killed it brightly on the small stage of the Maroquinere. Their future is promising. Bravo.
