Avec plus de 12 millions d’écoutes sur Spotify, 8,5 millions de vues sur YouTube et 1ere place au classement Billboard pour leur premier single, Ghost, sorti en 2018, BADFLOWER est sans aucun doute le groupe de rock alternatif à écouter de toute urgence.
Depuis sa formation en 2013, le groupe californien, composé du charismatique Josh Katz (chant, guitare) Joey Morrow (guitare), Anthony Sonetti (batterie) et Alex Espiritu (basse), n’a cessé de tourner à travers les États-Unis et au-delà (notamment en Angleterre), mais aussi passer en boucle à la radio aux USA. Ils sont d’ailleurs nommés au iHeartRadio Music Awards dans la catégorie meilleur Nouvel Artiste Rock/Rock Alternatif.
Après un premier EP-Temper– sorti en 2016, enregistré dans le garage de leur maison de Thousand Oaks et signé par le fashion designer John Varvatos himself et son label, le quartet débarque en force avec un premier album Ok, I’m Sick sorti le 22 février 2019.
Un premier opus qu’ils viendront présenter au public français pour la première fois à la Maroquinerie, le 5 avril 2019.
A la première écoute, les paroles et la diversité d’émotions : colère, douceur, chagrin ont toute de suite attiré mon attention.
Sur un sound heavy abrasif, esprit grunge, agrémenté du rock mélodique et sombre, jolies guitares, voix intense, on retrouve des paroles qui évoquent ouvertement et sans tabous le suicide, la santé mentale, la pédophilie ou la politique. Bref des maux de la société actuelle qui touchent une génération torturée et angoissée.
Décryptage :
L’album s’ouvre avec x ANA x, une chanson énergique et puissante avec des riffs chaotiques et distorsionnés. Une chanson qui parle de l’anxiété, de la dépression et des effets de médicaments (xANAx est une stylisation du Xanax). Un morceau frénétique qui introduit bien l’album dans son ensemble.
Suit, The Jester qui calme le tempo mais qui monte en puissance au refrain et prend la forme d’une narration pleine d’émotion qui parle de l’anxiété et de l’autodérision.
Avec Ghost, BADFLOWER évoque un sujet morbide – le suicide. “I tried it once before I didn’t get too far / I felt a lot of pain, but it didn’t stop my heart / And all I really wanted was someone to give a little fuck / But I waited there forever, and nobody even looked up.”
Belle et dramatique, remplie de noirceur et de désespoir, la chanson est construite comme un appel au secours par quelqu’un qui a essayé mais a échoué et maintenant, il réfléchit. Les guitares sont magnifiques, les paroles sincères, la voix profonde et passionnée. Une émotion tendre et brute. D’ailleurs la question de suicide est abordée tout au long de l’album.
We’re In Love est plus rythmé et légère et Promise Me est une chanson d’amour, avec un refrain catchy et funky (ma favorite) aux allures d’hymnes rock heureux, même si elle parle quand même de la peur de veiller et de mourir, d’une transition douloureuse à la vie adulte.
Daddy est un beau morceau qui aborde un sujet difficile – une jeune fille abusée sexuellement par son père. Dans 24, très slow, froide et sombre, Katz se décrit lui-même en total looser.
Heroin est une chanson intime et énigmatique avec des guitares brutes et boostées. Die est absolument électrisant et enragée avec un sujet de rigueur. Un hymne grunge anti-Trump dans lequel le groupe exprime clairement son avis sur l’état actuel des Etats-Unis et sur son président. Une portion d’énergie et de colère avec guitares puissantes une voix graveleuse. Joué en Live, cela doit être un délire.
Murder Game est une critique de l’abattage industriel des animaux. La batterie est forte et le rythme calme au début qui monte en puissance dans un déluge de guitares. Comme pour dénoncer cette cruauté envers les animaux.
Girlfriend est un morceau rapide qui parle encore d’un sujet actuel – la pornographie sur internet. Wide Eyes est groovy et dark avec quelques notes de piano pour mieux basculer dans un rythme effréné et des cris enragés.
Cry est un morceau long (plus de 6 minutes) conçu comme une belle conclusion en différents tempos et styles de chant. D’abord la melodie est douce et apaisante accompagnée par des belles cordes à quoi se rajoutent au fur et à mesure des guitares énergiques et une batterie puissante qui bousculent notre ouïe.
BADFLOWER délivre donc une vaste gamme d’émotions et des prises de position dans un très bon album de rock alternatif, un son varié, sombre, personnel et envoutant qui s’inscrit parfaitement dans la scène rock actuelle. Le groupe révèle du potentiel, une grande polyvalence et surtout un grand talent de mettre des mots sur des belles mélodies. La voix est profonde, la section rythmique, dirigée par Espiritu et Sonetti, est merveilleuse et complète bien les guitares impeccables de Morrow et de Katz.

With more than 12 million streams on Spotify, 8.5 million views on YouTube and 1st place on the Billboard chart for their first single, Ghost, released in 2018, BADFLOWER is definitely the alternative rock band to listen to urgently.
Since its creation in 2013, the Californian band composed of the charismatic Josh Katz (vocals, guitar) Joey Morrow (guitar), Anthony Sonetti (drums), and Alex Espiritu (bass), did not stop touring across the United States and beyond (especially in England) and enjoyed a heavy rotation on the US radios.
They are also nominated to the iHeartRadio Music Awards in the category Best New Rock/Alternative Rock Artist!
After a first EP-Temper – released in 2016, recorded in the garage of their home in Thousand Oaks, and signed by the fashion designer John Varvatos himself and his record label, the quartet arrived in force with a first album Ok, I’m Sick out on February 22, 2019.
A debut album that they will present to the French audience for the first time at La Maroquinerie on April 5, 2019. But let me tell you more about the album.
I must admit that at the first listening, the lyrics and the diversity of emotions: anger, tenderness, sadness have drawn my attention. On a heavy abrasive sound, grunge spirit and melodic and dark rock with beautiful guitars and intense vocals, their songs speak openly and without taboos of suicide, mental health, of paedophilia or politics. Briefly about the illness of our world that affects a tortured and depressed generation.
Decryption: The album opens with xANAx, an energetic and powerful song with chaotic and noisy riffs. A song that talks about anxiety, depression and the effects of pills (xANAx is a stylization of the Xanax). A frenetic track that introduced the album very well.
The Jester calm the tempo but it’s getting stronger at the chorus and takes the form of an emotional story that speaks of anxiety and self-deprecating. With Ghost, BADFLOWER evokes a morbid topic – the suicide. “I tried it once before I didn’t get too far / I felt a lot of pain, but it didn’t stop my heart / And all I really wanted was someone to give a little fuck / But I waited there forever, and nobody even looked up.”
A very beautiful song, dramatic, full of darkness and despair, built like a cry for help of someone who tried suicide, failed, and now, he’s thinking about his act. The guitars are amazing, heartfelt lyrics, the voice deep and passionate. A tender and raw emotion. Besides the theme of suicide is mentioned several times throughout the album.
We’re In Love is more groovy and soft while Promised Me is a love song, with a catchy funky chorus (my favourite) sounding like a happy rock anthems, although it talks about fear of getting old and about death and the painful transition to adult life.
Daddy is a beautiful song that tackles a difficult subject – the story of a young girl sexually abused by her father. On 24 slow and cold, Katz describes himself in total loser struggling with his demons. The idea of suicide is mentioned again. Heroin is intimate, enigmatic and haunting song with raw guitars. Die is absolutely electrifying and enraged. A hymn grunge anti-Trump where the band clearly expresses its opinion on the current state of the United States and its president. A portion of energy and anger, powerful guitars and gritty voice. Performed in Live must be a delirium.
Murder Game is a critique of industrial slaughter of the animals. The drums are strong and the pace is initially slow but increase in power with a deluge of guitars riffs. As to denounce this cruel treatment to animals. Girlfriend is a fast song, speaking of a current topic – pornography on the internet.
Wide Eyes is groovy and dark with a few piano notes to better switch in a frantic pace and enraged screams. Cry is a bit long (more than 6 minutes) as a nice conclusion with different tempos and singing styles. First the soft and soothing melody is accompanied by beautiful strings to which they add energetic guitars and a powerful battery that shoving our hearing.
BADFLOWER therefore delivers a wide range of emotions and positions in a solid alternative rock album, dark, personal and captivating that fits perfectly in the actual rock scene. The band reveals a great potential and good polyvalence and above all, they reveal a great talent to put the words on beautiful melodies. Katz’s voice is deep, the rhythm section led by Espiritu and Sonetti, is wonderful and complements the impeccable guitars riffs of Morrow and Katz.
