Magnetic INTERPOL in Paris – Salle Pleyel -29.11.2018 – Gig Review

Après 4 années d’attente, les maitres de post punk revival, Interpol, sortaient leur sixième album, Marauder, le 24 aout 2018, suivi par une tournée mondiale qui est passée en Europe par des salles prestigieuses comme l’Olympia à Dublin ou le Royal Albert Hall à Londres.

Il y a un 1 an, on avait célébré avec eux au Trianon à Paris, les 15 ans de leur premier album Turn on the Bright Lights. Les voilà donc cette fois investir la Salle Pleyel, le 29 novembre 2018, pour clôturer ce premier run de la tournée devant des fans très impatients de découvrir en live les nouveaux morceaux.

Quant à moi, j’avais ma petite idée de ce qu’ils nous avaient préparé ce soir, car j’ai eu le grand plaisir de voir le premier concert de la tournée à Londres, dans la mythique salle de Royal Albert Hall où j’en avais pris plein les yeux et les oreilles. Mais voilà donc le résumé du concert parisien qui affichant complet depuis bien longtemps.

En ouverture, la jeune londonienne Nilufer Yanya et sa belle voix Soul R’N’B. Accompagnée par sa guitare et par un groupe de musiciens à la saxophone, batterie, basse et clavier, son show plutôt jazzy est calme et bien exécuté, mais qui n’engage vraiment pas le public. D’ailleurs la foule se trouvait plutôt dans le superbe hall Art Deco de la Salle Pleyel, en train de patienter tranquillement au bar ou au stand merchandising.

Peu après 21h, les lumières s’éteignent, ambiance bleu mystérieuse, les premières notes d’Interlude 2 et Interpol arrivent sur scène comme des ombres enveloppées d’un brouillard épais. Habillés en costumes noirs impeccables, les New Yorkais ont toujours eu cette manière discrète et classe de faire leur entrée.

Paul Banks (chant, guitare), Sam Fogarino (batterie), Daniel Kessler (guitare) saluent le public et voilà que la magie commence avec Pioneer to The Falls chanté dans la nuit bleu étoilée, car les projections sur la boule à facette accrochée au plafond créent des petits points lumineux et balaient la scène et la salle des spots lumineux. Sublimes guitares douces, voix tendre et chaude quasi à capella, déjà le son nous percute « straight into our heart ».

Changement de tempo et des lumières avec C’mere et d’ailleurs cette balance – sombre- mélancolique/ brute – rythmé sera suivie tout au long du concert avec une maitrise hors pair.

If You Really Love Nothing, le premier extrait de Marauder arrive en troisième place suivi d’un fantastique Public Pervert, que je n’avais pas entendue depuis bien longtemps (ses dernières années à chaque concert, j’espérai secrètement qu‘ils vont la chanter… mon vœu est exaucé).

On supposait évidement que le fraîchement sorti Marauder, occupera une place importante dans le show mais finalement la set list de ce soir s’appuie fortement sur leurs deux premiers albums Turn on The Bright Lights et Antics sans oublier donc Our Love to Admire (Pioneer to The Falls, Rest My Chemistry), l’album Eponyme (Lights) et El Pintor (All the Rage back home) et avec les nouveaux morceaux éparpillés tout au long du set.

Le mix est tout simplement accablant. Passage excellent entre le punchy Rolland et ses lumières aveuglantes et Complications, une de mes préférés du Marauder, avec sa cadence entêtante et la voix lascive de Banks.

100 % high energy avec Say Hello to the Angels et un Sam implacable à la batterie suivi par NYC d’une beauté à perdre la tête. Un exceptionnel va et vient des lumières et des reflets sur la boule disco accompagne la fusion parfaite des guitares Kessler – Banks. Époustouflant.

Ils enchainent avec une nouvelle dose d’énergie pour The Rover, la chanson phare de Marauder et la sensuelle Rest My Chemistry.

Rythmes tenaces et voix sexy pour NYSMAW – (« Give me the oversight inside the Other, Give me the oversight inside the fantasy » qui n’arrête de tourner dans ma tête depuis) et les plus beaux riffs du monde pour The New et son intensité déchirante.

Sans surprise les fans sont là pour sauter et danser sur Slow Hand, PDA et Evil, les titres qui ont toujours été accueillis avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme. Flight of Fancy, subtil et délicat et Obstacle 1, quoi de mieux pour clôturer le show.

Pour les fidèles d’Interpol il n’y a pas de grand changement niveaux jeu de scène. Tout est juste parfait, minuté, comme d’habitude.

Le guitariste Daniel Kessler en constant mouvement hypnotique de pieds, il semble ne pas toucher la terre avec des mouvements doux mais précis, tout en caressant sa guitare. De temps en temps, Kessler lève un doigt à la foule accompagné à chaque fois par une réponse éclatante en retour.

Paul Banks garde sa présence statique et sculpturale, quasiment sans bouger au milieu de la scène et cette passion et tendresse qu’on peut lire sur son visage, yeux fermés ou regard perdu loin à l’horizon. Sourires et joie dans ses yeux pétillants en présentant ses acolytes et les morceaux.

Sam Fogarino est concentré et sérieux derrière son kit, on a l’impression que le lead est entre ses mains.

Les excellents musiciens de tournée, Brad Truax solide et confiant à la basse et Brandon Curtis aux claviers et chœurs sont devenus partie intégrante d’Interpol.C’est une alchimie musicale qui fonctionne à merveille.

A l’apogée de leur carrière, Interpol garde toujours cette charmante obscurité intense dans leurs interprétations faites dans les règles de l’art et avec la précision de l’horloge, en alternant les ambiance romantiques et exaltées. Un régal pour les fans.

Un groupe qui a su rester fidèle à son image tout en se renouvelant et touchant de plus en plus la perfection à chacun de ses albums.

Ce soir, on a assisté à un concert envoutant et puissant de bout en bout, avec une des meilleurs set list de leur carrière, les nouvelles chansons de Maurader recevant presque aussi bon accueil que les anciennes.

Émotion et nostalgie, glamour sombre et frissons, la magie d’Interpol reste intacte.

After 4 years of waiting, the masters of post punk revival, Interpol, released their sixth album, Marauder, on August 24, 2018, followed by a world tour that went by Europe in some of the most prestigious venues as the Olympia in Dublin or the Royal Albert Hall in London.

One year ago, we celebrated with them at Trianon in Paris, the 15th anniversary of their first album Turn on the Bright Lights and now here they are, on November 29, 2018, at Salle Pleyel, to close this first run of the tour with a sold-out gig, in front of many fans excited to hear the new songs in live.

As for me, I had my little idea of what they we are going to see tonight in Paris, because I had the great pleasure to see the first gig of the tour, in London, in the iconic Royal Albert Hall and it was majestic.

In opening, the young Londoner, Nilufer Yanya and her beautiful Soul R’N’B voice. Accompanied by her guitar and a group of musicians on saxophone, drums, bass and keyboards, she delivers a jazzy show, well executed, but that does not really move the audience. Actually, the crowd was rather in the superb Art Deco Hall of Salle Pleyel, waiting at the bar or shopping at the merchandising stand.

Shortly after 9 p.m., the lights go out, mysterious blue atmosphere, the first notes of Interlude 2 and Interpol arrive on stage as shadows wrapped in a thick fog. Dressed in elegant black suits, the New Yorkers have always had this classy and discreet way to do their entry.

Paul Banks (vocals, guitar), Sam Fogarino (drums), Daniel Kessler (guitar) greet the crowd and let the magic begins with Pioneer to The Falls, sang under a starry blue night, as projections on the disco ball hanging from the ceiling create lots of bright dots and sweeps the stage and the audience of spotlights. Sublime soft guitars, tender voice almost a capella, the sound already hit us “straight into our heart”.

Tempo and lights change with C’ mere. Anyway, this balance – dark melancholic / raw – energy will be followed throughout the concert with mastery. Follows If You Really Love Nothing, first song from Marauder, then the fantastic Public Pervert that I had not heard for a long time (these latest years at every concert I was secretly hoping they’ll sing it… and here it is- my wish is granted).

We assumed of course that the freshly released Marauder, will take an important place into the show but eventually the set list tonight relies more on their first two albums Turn on The Bright Lights and Antics, without forgetting Our Love to Admire (Pioneer to The Falls, Rest My Chemistry), the album eponymous (Lights) and El Pintor (All the Rage back home) and the new tracks insert here and there.

The mix is simply overwhelming. Excellent balance between the punchy Rolland and his strobing lights and Complications, one of my favourites of the Marauder, and its heady pace and seductive Banks vocals.

100% high energy with Say Hello to the Angels and a relentless Sam’s rhythmic behind the drums followed by an incredibly beautiful NYC. An exceptional come and go of lights and reflections on the disco ball accompanies the huge complementary fuzz of guitars Kessler – Banks. Blown away.

New dose of energy for The Rover, the first single out of Marauder followed by the sensual Rest My Chemistry. Persistent rhythms and sexy voice for NYSMAW – (“Give me the oversight inside the Other, Give me the oversight inside the fantasy” that I still cannot get out of my head) and the best riffs ever of The New and its wrenching intensity.

No surprise that the fans are there jumping and dancing on Slow Hands, PDA and Evil, tracks always welcome with great enthusiasm. Flight of Fancy, slow and delicate and Obstacle 1, what better way to close the show.

Loyal Interpol fans will see no big change on stage. All is just perfect, well timed, as usual. The guitarist Daniel Kessler in constant hypnotic feet movement, sometimes he seems not touching the Earth with his gentle but precise movements, while stroking his guitar. From time to time, Kessler lifts a finger to the crowd accompanied every time by a glowing response back.

Paul Banks keeps his presence static and sculptural, almost motionless in the middle of the stage with that passion and tenderness that can be read on his face, eyes closed or gaze lost away to the horizon. Smiles and joy in his sparkling eyes while he introduce his bandmates.

Sam Fogarino focused and serious behind his kit, we have the impression that the lead is in his hands. The excellent tour musicians, Brad Truax, solid and confident on bass and Brandon Curtis on keyboards and chorus have become an integral part of Interpol family. It’s a musical chemistry that works brilliantly.

At the height of their career, Interpol still keep this lovely intense darkness in their performance made in the rules of the great art and with the precision of the clock, alternating the melancholic and ecstatic atmosphere. A bless for their fans.

A band that managed to remain true to their sound and image over the years, while renewing and touching more and more the perfection with each of their albums. This evening, we attented a captivating and powerful gig from start to finish, offering one the best set list of their career, the new songs of Marauder receiving almost the same warm welcome as the old ones.

Emotion and nostalgia, dark glamour and thrills, the magic of Interpol remains intact.
