Good Vibes with Black Stone Cherry and Monster Truck at Elysée Montmartre, Paris – 03.12.2018

A l’approche de la fin d’année, les concerts sur Paris se sont multipliés, difficile de garder le rythme sans frôler le surdosage de bon gros son Rock’n’Roll. Tiens prenons donc par exemple le lundi, 3 décembre 2018 : Que choisir entre Idles au Bataclan, Kreator et Dimmu Borgir à l’Olympia et Monster Truck et Black Stone Cherry à l’Elysée Montmartre ? Difficile, non ?

Comme le titre de cet article l’indique, j’ai opté pour le hard blues rock de Black Stone Cherry venus de Kentucky pour présenter leur 6ème album, Family Tree.

Et ce sont les Canadiens de Monster Truck qui ouvrent la soirée, devant une salle pas tout à fait remplie, mais très impatiente. Un groupe que je viens de découvrir à travers leur très bon 3ème album True Rockers, sorti en septembre 2018 et qui sera bien représenté dans le set avec 4 morceaux (Denim Danger, Devil Don’t Care, Evolution, True Rocker).

Le quatuor met le feu rapidement avec leur spontanéité et motivation et un son très varié, entre le hard rock puissant et des interludes blues bien travaillés qui plaisent énormément au public. Les très énergiques Jon Harvey (Chant, Basse) et surtout Jeremy Widerman (Guitare), frénésie et headbanging à fond, complétés par Brandon Bliss (claviers) et Steve Kiely (batterie) transpirent un état d’esprit bien Rock‘N’Roll. Un show électrique et un super échauffement pour ce qui va suivre.

Et voilà que sous les acclamations du public surgissent sur la scène couverte de tapis : John Fred Young (batterie) Ben Wells (guitare), Chris Robertson (voix, guitare), lunettes de soleil et chapeau et Jon Lawhorn (basse), joli chapeau également (si vous avez lu l’interview vous avez déjà appris que ces 2 derniers ne se séparent jamais de leur chapeaux).

Rapidement, ils se lancent dans un jeu de scène exalté, courant et sautant sans relâche, Jon et Ben s’échangeant les places en continu : Burnin’ suivi de Me and Mary Jane et Rain Wizard lancent une énergie époustouflante. Attention au tournis ! Black Stone Cherry sont visiblement très en forme.

Malgré un souci de guitare pour Chris qui semble un peu gêné, les autres le couvre bien et le show continue avec la même envergure. Ben nous informe que ce soir, c’est la dernière date d’une merveilleuse tournée sur le continent et que la veille, le groupe a même profité de faire une tour à Paris, une ville qu’ils apprécient énormément.

Bad Habit, Like I Roll, Stay excellent en acoustique, le très funky James Brown, tour à tour au micro Chris, Ben, et Jon entrainent et sollicitent le public à participer activement au show, en espérant que tout le monde a apporté ses dancing shoes.

Ben Wells, hyperactif, on le dira connecté à une prise électrique, donne de coups de tête et des pieds avec un enthousiasme sans limites.

Très joli balade In my blood, suivi de Blind man, et évidement un solo féroce de John Fred Young déchainé derrière ses fûts. Encore du blues avec I’m your hoochie coochie man la reprise de Willie Dixon avant un final tout en énergie avec Lonely train, Blame it on the boom boom, White trash millionnaire suivi par Family tree, et l’émouvant Peace is free où Chris demande à tout le monde de prendre la main de son voisin.

Ce soir, Black Stone Cherry a offert à ses fans un show bourré d’hymnes imprégnés du parfum de rock sudiste authentique mixé avec de la modernité. Voix remplie de sensibilité, jolis solos et surtout duos de guitares Ben et Chris et leur magnifique complicité toujours terminé par un check et grands sourires, à quoi il faudra rajouter la remarquable efficacité de Jon, à la basse et John Fred, excellent à la batterie.

Tout au long de la soirée, les rockers sur scène n’ont simplement pas arrêté de bouger et la foule les a bien accompagné. Bon esprit et positive vibes! A refaire tous les lundis !

The end of the year is near and the good concerts in Paris are multiplied. Difficult to keep up without sweeping the overdose of big fat Rock ‘N’ Roll sound. Let’s take the example of Monday, December 3, 2018, – How to choose between Idles at the Bataclan, Kreator and Dimmu Borgir at the Olympia and Monster Truck and Black Stone Cherry at the Elysee Montmartre? Difficult, right?

As the title of this article suggests, I opted for the good hard blues-rock of Black Stone Cherry, coming up from Kentucky to introduce their 6th album Family Tree.

The Canadians of Monster Truck opens the evening, in front of an impatient audience, even if the venue is not yet full. A band that I have just discovered through their very good 3rd album True Rockers, released in September 2018 that will be well represented in the set list with 4 songs (Denim Danger, Devil Don’t Care, Evolution, True Rocker).

The Quartet sets the stage on fire quickly with their spontaneity and motivation and a varied sound between hard powerful rock and well-crafted blues interludes that appeal very much to the crowd. The very energetic Jon Harvey (vocals, bass) and especially Jeremy Widerman (guitar), headbanging franticly, accompanied by Brandon Bliss (keyboards) and Steve Kiely (drums) offers a good True Rock’ n’ Roll spirit. An electrical show and a great warm up for what will follow.

Under the crowd big applauses arrive on the stage: John Fred Young (drums), Ben Wells (guitar), Chris Robertson (vocal, guitar), sunglasses and hat and Jon Lawhorn (bass), wearing a nice hat also (if you have read the interview you have already learned that these 2 guys are never separating from their hats).

Quickly, they embark on a exciting stage game, running and jumping tirelessly, Jon and Ben keeping changing their places: Burnin’ followed by Me and Mary Jane and Rain Wizard that launch a breath-taking energy. Watch out the vertigo! Black Stone Cherry are obviously in great shape.

Despite a problem with Chris guitar, who seems a little confused, the others cover him well, and the show continues with the same span. Ben informs us that tonight is the last date of a wonderful tour on the continent and that the day before, the band visited Paris, a city that they particularly love.

Bad Habit, Like I Roll or Stay excellent in acoustic, the funky James Brown, Chris, Ben, and Jon request the crowd to actively participate in the show, hoping that everyone has brought his dancing shoes.

Remarkable, Ben Wells, hyperactive, gives feet kicks and head bangs with boundless enthusiasm.

More blues vibes with I’m your hoochie coochie man the cover of Willie Dixon, before an energetic final with Lonely train, Blame it on the boom boom, White trash millionaire followed by Family tree, and the emotional Peace is free where Chris asks everyone to hold the hand of his neighbour.

Tonight, Black Stone Cherry offered to their fans a show full of anthems, imbued with the scent of authentic southern rock mixed with modernity. Vocals filled with sensibility, guitars solos and especially duets of Ben and Chris and their great complicity always finished with a fist bump and big smiles, what you have to add the remarkable effectiveness of Jon on bass and John Fred excellent on drums.

Throughout these 2 shows, the guys just kept moving on stage and the crowd accompanied them well. Good spirit and positive vibes! I want shows like this every Monday!
