Juste avant la sortie de leur premier album « Anthem of The Peaceful Army » prévue le 19 octobre 2018, découvrez Greta Van Fleet à travers l’interview de Sam Kiszka, le très sympathique bassiste du groupe, que j’ai eu l’occasion de rencontrer lors de leur passage remarqué au Download Festival Paris, le 18 Juin 2018.
Succès fulgurant, inspiration musicale, premier album, The Beatles et Led Zeppelin, shopping mode, peinture, voilà notre discussion.
Le show vient de se terminer, comment ça s’est passé ?
Sam : C’était absolument fantastique. Maintenant nous sommes sur le point de rentrer à la maison, donc c’est assez cool. Nous avons fini les concerts en Europe, mais nous allons être bientôt de retour, dans quelques mois. J’aime l’Europe plutôt en été qu’au printemps. Je pense que le printemps il fait très froid et j’ai peur du froid. Je sais, nous sommes gâtés…
Tout le monde parle de Greta Van Fleet. Qu’est-ce que tu penses de ce grand succès partout dans le monde ?
Sam : Je suis juste heureux que les gens aiment notre musique autant que nous. C’était notre intention de faire partie de la vie des gens. C’est une des choses les plus incroyable quand votre art touche les gens de cette manière. C’est une sensation énorme. Je suis heureux que les gens peuvent se rapportent à notre musique et qu’ils peuvent en profiter autant que nous le faisons. C’est tout simplement fantastique.
Comment est-ce que vous avez décidé de former un groupe, entre frères ?
Sam : Ce qui est drôle est qu’aucune décision n’a été vraiment prise, c’est juste venu comme ça. Jake était toujours en train de jouer de la guitare, Josh a commencé à chanter et puis Jake a commencé inviter des amis de l’école pour jouer de la batterie. Et moi, j’ai commencé à jouer de la basse parce que c’était le seul instrument manquant dans le groupe.
Puis Daniel est arrivé et Greta Van Fleet est né. Nous n’avons jamais vraiment pris une décision consciente, mais je pense que nous avons juste profité du moment et fait ce que nous voulions et nous aimons faire. Les choses se sont mis ensemble tout seules et ça continue. Vraiment, nous ne voulions pas forcer les choses. Vous ne pouvez pas forcer que l’art se produise.
Comment vous écrivez ensemble ?
Sam : Dès le départ, nous avons eu l’ambition d’écrire notre propre musique, donc nous avons essayé et nous avons écrit la chanson Highway Tune, il y a 5 ou 6 ans maintenant. Daniel et moi avions 13 ans et Jake et Josh, 16 ans. Et puis tout s’est enchaîné.
Ça commence en général avec Jake qui trouve un riff de guitare cool et nous allons le travailler, moi et Daniel, on travaille la section rythmique, Josh met une mélodie et des paroles là dessous.
Mais, ce n’est pas toujours comme ça, des fois Josh arrive dans le studio avec des paroles différentes de celles que vous entendez dans l’enregistrement final. Les vraies paroles seront décidées seulement 10 minutes avant que nous enregistrions la dernière prise vocale.
Une chanson peut provenir de 3 non-mélodies autour desquelles nous avons créé une progression des accords et tout avance à partir de là. Il s’agit vraiment de travailler ensemble, mettre nous esprits à unisson.
Est-ce qu’il y a une compétition entre vous, comme par exemple qui vient avec la meilleure idée ?
Sam : Ah oui, absolument. C’est valable pour chacun d’entre nous et c’est une chose très saine. Tu sais comme Les Beatles- comme John et Paul… « hey, je peux faire ça mais moi je peux faire encore mieux que cela » Et c’est une chose très importante qui apporte de la qualité, plein d’idées différentes et nous aide à construire une très belle chanson.
Ta première inspiration musicale ?
Sam : Je dirais The Beatles. Ils ont été ma première inspiration musicale. Je pense ils ont juste fait la plus belle musique et ces gens ensemble, ça a marché. C’est quelque chose d’absolument indéniable.
Ils ont le sens de la mélodie, des chansons complexes et le sens d’exploration et d’expérimentation. Je pense que ces 2 dernières choses sont très importantes dans la musique, plus précisément dans Rock N’Roll.
Je pense qu’il faut toujours essayer de faire quelque chose de nouveau, quelque chose de différent et la mélodie doit être très bonne… c’est pourquoi j’adore les Beatles.
Puis j’ai commencé à écouter aussi The Doors et Crosby, Still, Nash et c’était vraiment important pour moi aussi. C’est la raison pour laquelle j’ai commencé à jouer de la guitare il y a quelques années.
Un fait peu connu est que Daniel est un excellent guitariste comme Jake l’est aussi et j’ai donc pensé que je pourrai jouer de la guitare aussi.
Il y a beaucoup de choses différentes qui se passent au le sein de Greta Van Fleet, on a tous un grand nombre de différentes influences.
Et que pense-tu de cette comparaison continue avec Led Zeppelin….
Sam : Nous considérons ça comme un compliment. Led Zeppelin est probablement le plus grand groupe de Rock’ N Roll de tous les temps, et Robert Plant est un du plus grand chanteur de Rock’ N Roll de tous les temps. J’ai récemment revisité leur catalogue musical et c’est absolument incroyable. Ils ont eu ce sens de la mélodie dont je parlais et l’expérimentation. Je suis heureux que les gens pensent que nous sommes aussi bons. Wouah !
Vous préparez votre premier album, tu pourras me dire un peu plus ?
Sam : Nous sommes effectivement en train de le mixer et c’est un peu difficile de parler avec nos producteurs étant donné que nous sommes tout le temps sur la route. C’est une chose difficile, mais nous n’avons pas encore fait un album lorsque nous n’étions pas sur la route, donc nous ne savons pas la différence. Je suis vraiment excité. Nous avons travaillé beaucoup et très dur là-dessus et le tout s’est mis en place très joliment. C’était la plus belle expérience à faire. Nous en sommes vraiment très fiers. Il y a beaucoup de bonne énergie dedans, des bonnes chansons, et nous avons exploré un grand nombre de nouveaux territoires que nous n’avons pas traité avant.
Vous êtes toujours très stylé sur la scène. Comment choisissez-vous vos vêtements ?
Sam : Ahh, merci. En fait, tu sais parfois tu es dans un magasin de vêtements… ça pourrait être un magasin vintage ou H & M, n’importe et il y’a un vêtement qui attire ton attention, style tu ne peux pas décoller tes yeux. Et puis tu le garde dans ta tête, et tu reviens, tu l’essai et tu trouves que c’est génial !
Ce que je veux dire c’est que au début tu n’étais pas sûr que ce vêtement va t’aller mais finalement il est devenu ton nouveau préféré.
Pour cela, je pense qu’il est important de faire les boutiques ensemble, tous les quatre. Nous le faisons souvent et cela marche bien.
Josh est vraiment bon à dénicher la bonne pièce… il nous dit toujours « hey regarde ça, qui veut l’essayer, c’est cool »
Je ne pense pas que nous n’avons jamais vraiment parlé de ça mais nous venons du même endroit musicalement et nous avons également de la même idée sur la mode, le style et sur ce qui est cool et flamboyant.
Les tenues de scène sont importantes, car elles vous transforment d’une personne normale en un musicien sur scène, donc c’est une attitude, une forme d’expression. Ça faire partie du show tout comme la musique, le son, le visuel.
Quelle est ta chanson favorite à jouer en live ?
Sam : Il y en a beaucoup. J’attends toujours avec impatience de jouer live, et surtout les chansons qui figurerons sur le nouvel album. Et parmi les anciennes que j’aime jouer, je dirais Black Smoke Rising. Un morceau dont on ne s’en lasse pas. C’est une chanson très importante pour nous, elle est fun à jouer et la plupart du temps c’est la chanson favorite des fans.
Mais je pense que tout le show est une expérience fun, non seulement pour nous mais pour le public aussi, tout le monde est impliqué. Nous avons un public génial avec qui nous avons une bonne synergie.
Tu écoutes quoi en ce moment ?
Sam : C’est une bonne question. Je dirais que c’est un peu bizarre pour moi ces derniers temps, j’écoute de vieux trucs de Kenny Rogers, alors qu’il était dans sa phase psychédélique avec The First Edition de la fin 60 trucs et j’écoute aussi Cloves qui est une artiste australienne qui va faire la première partie pour nos concerts aux Etats-Unis en juillet.
Quel est ton passe-temps favori ?
Sam : J’aime peindre, j’ai mon kit et tous les trucs nécessaires. C’est bien avoir un hobby parce que parfois dans toute forme d’art tu arrives à un point quand tu ne te sens plus créative et tu n’as plus envie de continuer avec ce que tu fais.
Et là, il est important de faire une pause et avoir une autre forme d’expression. J’ai choisi la peinture car j’aimais bien à l’école. Nous lisons aussi souvent parce que c’est un bon passe-temps et il y a beaucoup de temps de passer dans le bus.
Un message à passer aux Fans Français ?
Sam : Gardez un œil sur l’album. Il va être génial. Je sais que vous les gars en France vous aimez les LP, les vinyles. Je m’assurerai que vous allez en avoir.

How are you Sam, the show just finished, how was it?
Sam: it was absolutely fantastic. It finished so quickly but now we are about to go home so it’s pretty cool. We finished the gigs in Europe but we are going to be back soon here, in a couple of months. It’s been great in Europe. I love over here more in summer time then spring. I think spring is very cold and I am afraid of cold. I know, we are spoiled….
Everybody is talking about Greta Van Fleet. How do you feel about this big success around the world?
Sam: I am just happy that people enjoyed the music as much as we do. That was our intent to be part of other people lives. It is one of the most incredible things ever when your art affects people like that. It’s an enormous feeling. I am glad that people can relate to this music, I am glad that people rock out and enjoy it as much as we do. These all together, It’s just fantastic.
How did you guys start? How three brothers decide to make a band?
Sam: What is funny about all that is that no decision was actually ever made, it just happened. Jake was always playing guitar, Josh stared singing and then Jake started bringing home friends from school to play drums. I started playing bass because, it was the only instrument missing in the group. Then Daniel arrived in the band and Greta Van Fleet was born.
We never really made a conscious decision but I think we just enjoy this and this is what we want and we love to do. The things just come together and they are still coming together. We do not really want to force them. You can’t really force art to happen.
How do you write together?
Sam: Early on, we had ambition to write our own music, so we tried our hand and we wrote the song Highway Tune, 5 or 6 years ago now, when me and Daniel were 13 and Jake and Josh were 16. And then songs just started to coming up.
Jake finds a cool guitar riff, and we’ll work from there – me and Daniel put some rhythm section on it and Josh put a melody and lyrics on it. This is one of the things it just happens eventually.
But it arrives a lot of time in the studio that Josh does not arrive with the actual lyrics that you hear in the recording and the real ones will be decided only 10 minutes before we record the final vocal track.
Everything it is really about working together and a song could come from 3 non-melodies and we would write a chord progression around it and the whole thing advance from there, with all our minds together.
Is it a competition between you, like who is coming with the best idea?
Sam: Yeah absolutely everything single one of us has that. That’s a very healthy thing to have. You know like The Beatles-like John and Paul… like “I can do this, oh but me, I can do better than that”. And it is such an important thing that brings the quality and make people build a beautiful track from different ideas.
What would be your first musical inspiration?
Sam: I would say The Beatles. They were my first musical inspiration as far as music goes. I think they just made the most beautiful music and I think those people together, it just works. It is something absolutely undeniable. They had the sense of melody, of complex songs and the sense of exploration and experimentation. I think those 2 things are so important in music specifically in Rock N’ Roll.
I think that people always should try new things as this interested people… something new, something different and the melody need to be good… that’s why, I love Beatles.
Then I got into The Doors and Crosby, Stills, Nash and it was really a big one for me too that’s the reason why I start playing guitar a few years ago.
Just a little not well-known fact is that Daniel is an amazing guitarist and Jake plays obviously a very good guitar and I thought I can do that also. As I can play keyboards, I can play guitar also.
There are a lot of different things going on into Greta Van Fleet, we have a lot of different influences.
How about this continuous comparison with Led Zeppelin, what do you think about this?
Sam: We just take it as a compliment. Led Zeppelin is probably the greatest Rock N’ Roll band of all the times and I think Robert Plant is one of the greatest Rock N’ Roll vocalist of all the times. I just recently revisited their stuff and it is an absolutely amazing catalogue. They had that sense of melody that I was telling about, the experimentation. I am glad that people think that we are as good. Wouah!
You are preparing a new album, what can you tell me about it?
Sam: we are actually in the process of mixing it and it’s a kind of tough being on the road and talk with our producer. It’s a difficult thing but on the other hand, we did not make an album when we were not on the road before, so we do not know the difference.
I am really excited about it. It’s something that we are really proud of, we work very long and very hard on it, and the whole thing came together just very beautifully. It was the greatest experience to make it. There is a lot of good energy in it, a lot of good song writing, a lot of new territories that we did not treat before.
You guys are always looking great on stage- very stylish… How do you choose your clothes?
Sam: Wow, Thank you. You know sometimes you are in a clothing store… could be a vintage store or H&M and you see a piece and it’s really something about that thing you can’t really take your eyes off of it. You keep looking over it and even you are at the cash register you still keep looking over it and lot of the time, you go back and try it on and you said Yesss, it’s great!
It’s something that you don’t immediately think that is gonna work but it absolutely does and it became your new favourite thing. I think that’ s why it’s important to group shop. That’s why we do this lot of the time, we go shopping together. Josh is really good at it, he says…” hey look at this, who wants to try it, somebody should try so “. It’s kind of group effort.
I do not think that we ever really talked about it but we come from the same spots musically, so we also have the same idea about what is fashion, what’s style, what is it to look good, to be flamboyant …it’s a whole attitude.
The stage outfits are important because it transforms you from a normal person into a musician up on stage, so it is an attitude, a form of expression, just like playing music.
It’s all part of the show, it’s part of light show, part of the sound, of the visual. So, it’s a very important thing.
What is your favourite song to play live?
Sam: There are a lot of them. For every show, I cannot wait to start to play live the songs from the new record that we are about to release. Also, one song that we play right now and never gets old is Black Smoke Rising.Just one of those songs that we won’t get bored. It’s a very important song to us, it’ s very entertaining song to play and most of the time it’s the fans favourite.
But I think that the whole live show is a fun experience, not only for us but for the audience too, everybody is involved. We have a great audience, we had a good energy. It’s a great thing to be a part of this.
What is playing in your headphones now?
Sam: That’s a good question. I would say it’s a little bit weird for me lately. I got into some old Kenny Rogers stuff when he was into his psychedelic phase with The First Edition, some late 60s stuff.
Also, I’ve been listening a lot of Cloves, who is an Australian artist and she is gonna opening for us in USA in July.
What do you like to do instead of music?
Sam: I like to paint, I have my kit and stuff. It’s an important thing to have because sometimes with any form of art you come to a point when you say that you do not feel creative anymore and you do not feel like I wanna continue with what I do. You need to take a break and to do anything else, a different form of expression.
It is important. I got into painting because I liked to do it in school. We all read often because it is good pass time. And there is a lot of time to pass in the bus.
To end this interview, do you have something that you would like to say to the French Fans?
Sam: Keep an eye on the Album. It’s gonna be awesome. I know that you guys in France like things like LP, vinyls. I will make sure that you get this.
