Greta Van Fleet – Total Success at Elysée Montmartre, Paris 26.10.2018 – Gig Review

Après avoir rempli Les Etoiles en mars dernier, la tente Warbird au DownLoad Festival Paris, voilà que le 26 octobre 2018, Greta Van Fleet posait ces valises de nouveau à Paris, cette fois dans le mythique salle d’Elysée Montmartre. Une date qui affichait complet depuis bien longtemps, comme d’ailleurs tous leurs dates européennes de ce tour leg.

A seulement 1 semaine après la sortie leur premier album « Anthem Of The Peaceful Army », le public parisien avait donc le privilège d’assister au premier concert après la sortie de l’opus tant attendu.

S’inscrivant dans la même lignée que leur excellent EP « From The Fires » sorti un peu plus tôt cette année, l’album est une magnifique collection d’hymnes Rock N’ Roll tout droit sorti de seventies.

Il faut savoir que depuis l’apparition de Greta Van Fleet et leur ascension fulgurante, le groupe de Michigan divise le monde du rock en 2 camps – ceux qui les adorent et ceux qui les détestent. La raison vous la connaissait tous – cette inspiration « trop directe » de légendes Led Zeppelin.

Personnellement, j’adhère complément au premier camp comme vous avez pu le constater largement sur ce site, me voilà donc pour la 3ème fois cette année dans la fosse pleine à craquer.

La soirée commence en force avec le blues rock de Good Bye June, le sympathique groupe de Nashville. Énergie, guitares puissantes et voix blues, bonne humeur, le trio et leur deux musiciens parvient à chauffer la foule rapidement.

Longues chevelures, grands sourires, les garçons présentent leur nouvel EP « Secrets in the Sunset » avec la chanson Get Happy tout fraichement devoilé. Bel enchainement des balades (Darling’) et chansons hard rock bien rythmés (the Man of the Moment, Daisy ou Oh No). Le chanteur Landon Milbourn, bonnet et veste frangée, communique aisément avec un public charmé et bien chauffé. Quelqu’un dans la foule leur demande de se présenter. Un jeune groupe à suivre.

Peu avant 21 h, les trois frères Kiszka (Josh, Jake et Sam) et leur ami Danny Wagner, armés de roses blanches qu’ils jettent dans le public font une entrée triomphale sous les acclamations d’une foule impressionnante.

Plumes, headband, haut doré, pantalon fluide et sandales birchen stock pour le chanteur Josh, jolie veste ouverte sur un torse nu couvert de colliers pour Jake, son jumeau, à la guitare, gilet et grand plastron ethnique, pieds nus pour Sam à la basse et gilet coloré pour Danny à la batterie, les jeunes américains restent fidèles à leur look flamboyant hippy seventies.

Le show s’ouvre avec Brave New World extrait du nouvel album et la voix sublime de Josh nous ébloui instantanément. Highway Tune en version étirée suit et fait le délice d’un public qui est déjà en surchauffe. Edge of Darkness met de nouveau en valeur la délirante interprétation à la guitare de Jake, doublée d’une rhythmique impeccable.

C’est parti pour un enchainement Rock N’ Roll digne de années 70s. Au menu : décibels, puissance vocale, virtuosité instrumentale – ovations à fond pour une jeune groupe talentueux.

Autour de moi des fans de tous les âges, mais aussi des gens qui les découvrent pour la première fois – les visages sont ravis, l’ambiance est à point, tout le monde est conquis.

Sublime incursion dans l’époque hippie avec Flower Power – Josh admet que c’est sa chanson préférée, suivi par You’re the One, un peu dans le même style. Sam implacable, excelle dans ses 2 rôles de bassiste et claviériste.

Interlude covers remarquablement exécutés – Evil (Howlin’ Wolf) et surtout la version époustouflante de la ballade folk Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) de la chanteuse Melaine : lumières en pénombre, solo guitare ravageur et très allongé, ardeur brulante derrière la batterie et parfaites vocalises.

Watching Over et le savoureux When the Courtain Falls concluent le set en rythme effréné. Ils reviendront pour 2 autres morceaux Black Smoke Rising et Safari Song, déjà des classiques du groupe.

Certes, c’est difficile de ne pas laisser le spectre de Led Zeppelin planer sur la prestation de ces jeunes gens: Josh avec ses postures et mimiques (à noter plus d’aisance dans la communication avec le public), son frangin Jake avec ses riffs draconiennes et solos rallongés ou la parfaite section rythmique de Sam et Danny (mentionne spéciale pour son solo drums bouillonnant sur Safari Song) mais on avait besoin de ce revival 70s dans ce monde digital ou la musique se fait de plus en plus sur un ordinateur.

Et puis, ça fait tellement plaisir de voir qu’il y encore des gamins qui adorent jouer du vrai old school Rock ‘n’ Roll devant un public ravi, toute âge confondu.

Pas de scénographie sophistiquée, les nouveaux titres fonctionnent à merveille, beaux solos, voix prodigieuse, du charisme, sound précis et à l’objet, Greta van Fleet est bel et bien un phénomène à l’ascension fulgurante.

Adrénaline, jeunesse et exubérance, le quatuor gagne encore plus de crédibilité avec un show vibrant et irréprochable devant un foule enthousiaste. Succès total !

Et pour confirmer l’incroyable expansion du groupe, ils reviendront à Paris 03 mars 2019 dans une salle encore plus grande – RDV au Zenith de Paris. A quand le Stade de France?

After a sold-out gig at Les Etoiles last March, the crowded Warbird stage at the Download Festival Paris, on October 26, 2018, Greta Van Fleet settle down again in Paris, this time in the mythical Hall of Elysée Montmartre.

Another sold-out date since long-time ago as all their European dates of this tour leg. Only 1 week after the release of their debut album “Anthem Of The Peaceful Army,” the Parisian audience therefore had the privilege to attend the first concert after this so much expected event.

In the same line as the excellent EP “From The Fires” released earlier this year, the album is a wonderful collection of Rock N Roll anthems coming up straight out of the seventies.

What you need to know is that since the Greta Van Fleet phenomenon was born, followed by their meteoric rise, the band from Michigan divides the rock planet into 2 camps – those who love them and those who hate them. The reason is this resemblance and direct inspiration of legends Led Zeppelin. Personally, I support add-in the first camp as you may have seen widely on this site, so here I am in front of the stage for the 3rd GVF round this year.

The evening starts in force with the blues rock of Good Bye June, the friendly band of Nashville. Energy, powerful guitars, great vocals and good mood, the quintet manages to warm the crowd quickly.

Long hair, big smiles, the boys introduce their new EP “Secrets in the Sunset” with a brand-new song Get Happy. Nice sequence of ballads (Darling’) and southern rock n’ roll well-paced songs (the Man of the Moment, Daisy or Oh No). Singer Landon Milbourn, wearing a cap and fringed leather jacket communicates easily with a charmed crowd. Someone asks them what is the name of their band. Big applauses! A young group to follow closely.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the three brothers Kiszka (Josh, Jake and Sam) and their friend Danny Wagner, armed with white roses that they throw in the audience, make a triumphal entry to the cheers of an impressive crowd of people.

Feathers, headband, gold top, large pants and birchen stock sandals for the singer Josh, nice open jacket on the shirtless breast covered with necklaces for Jake, his twin, on the guitar, vest and large ethnic breastplate, bare feet for Sam on bass and coloured vest for Danny on drums, the young Americans stick to their flamboyant look hippy seventies.

The show opens with Brave New World, extract of the new album and the sublime Josh’s voice instantly dazzled us. Highway Tune in stretched version follows and it is the delight of an overheating audience. Edge of Darkness highlights the fantastic guitar performance of Jake, combined with an impeccable rhythmic section.

We completely dive in sequence worthy of 70s Rock N Roll session. On the menu: decibels, vocal power, instrumental virtuosity – huge ovations for a young talented group.

Around me the fans of all ages, but also the people who discover them for the first time – faces are delighted, arms are in the air, the atmosphere is awesome. Everyone is conquered.

Sublime intrusion into the hippie era with Flower Power – Josh admits it is his favourite song- followed by You’re the One, in the same style. Relentless Sam excels in his 2 roles of bassist and keyboardist.

2 covers Interlude remarkably executed – Evil (Howlin’ Wolf) and the stunning version of the folk ballad Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) of the singer Melanie: lights and darkness, ravishing long solo guitar, hot ardour behind the drums and perfect vocals.

Watching Over and the tasty When the Curtain Falls conclude the set in a frantic pace. They will come back for 2 more tracks Black Smoke Rising and Safari Song, already the band’s classics.

Certainly, it is difficult not to let the spectrum of Led Zeppelin persist on the performance of these if talented young people: Josh with his poses and facial expressions, his brother Jake with his draconian riffs and long solos and the perfect rhythm section of Sam and Danny (special mention for his bubbling drums solo on Safari Song) but this 70s rock revival is finally a back the roots that bring us so much freshness in this digital world where music is more and more done by pushing a button on the computer.

And then, it’s such a big pleasure to see that there are still kids who love play true old school rock n roll in front of a delighted bursting audience. Note that Josh looks more comfortable to communicate with the fans.

Adrenaline, beautiful solos, prodigious voice, charisma, youth and exuberance, Greta Van Fleet win more credibility with a vibrant and flawless gig in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Total success!

And to confirm their incredible expansion, they will return to Paris 03 March 2019 in a larger concert hall – RDV then at Zenith in Paris. And Stade de France is when?
