Chaleur, sueur, feu et flammes, du gros son, des guitares incendiaires et des grognements, une marée humaine à perte de vue, vous avez deviné, aujourd’hui je vais vous parler de la 13 ème édition de HELLFEST.
Encore une fois, cette année un soleil brulant pour les 3 jours d’un de plus grands et grandioses festivals de métal d’Europe qui s’est déroulé du 22 au 24 Juin 2018 sur les terres de Clisson, en Loire-Atlantique. Des énormes tête affiche, des révélations, des découvertes, l’excellente programmation rock, hard, heavy, death, black etc… métal a compté 160 artistes. Et comme depuis plusieurs années, cette édition affichait Sold Out depuis bien longtemps, bien avant que la line-up soit dévoilée.
6 scènes. 2 Main Stage flanquées de 3 écrans énormes permettant de suivre les concerts de très loin et 4 autre scènes – Altar, Temple, Valley, War Zone arrangées à peu près en cercle autour de bars, de restos, des fameux containers arty en fer rouillé ou d’autres ouvres artistiques. La grande roue et les boutiques de merchandising avec les files d’attente gigantesque toujours en place.
Des nouvelles structures ont fait surface également : 2 fontaines cadres noirs diffusant des murs d’eau ont fait le délice des festivalières. Passer en dessous c’était leur plus grand plaisir, tandis qu’à la nuit tombée, on pouvait admirer des projections lumineuses sur les jets d’eau.
Un nouveau bar surplombé d’une boule gigantesque comme un planète en éruption, crachant du feu et flammes a également resurgi de terre. Le soir, cette structure rejoins le superbe spectacle pyrotechnique du site avec ses containers empilés illuminés. Brillant.
Joie et bonne humeur au programme ce Week End avec de métalleux venus de quatre coins du monde pour s’amuser et profiter de la bonne musique. Costumes originales, personnages hauts en couleur rejoignent la majorité de festivaliers habillés plutôt en tenues très sombres.
En espace VIP, on a retrouvé l’élégant bar gothique aux allures de cabinet de curiosités où on pouvait suivre aussi les matchs de foot (Coupe du Monde oblige), la jolie fontaine bien surveillée par les 4 gardians du temple du métal, cette fois suspendus au-dessous d’une eau rouge sang, et le bassin qui sert de piscine pour certains courageux.
Quant à mon périple musical, j’ai oscillé entre les deux grandes scènes sans oublier les passages obligés dans les tentes dédiés aux musiques extrêmes et aux shows les plus inattendues et bizarres. Toujours pas de concert en Warzone car un peu trop éloigné, mais juste un passage pour voire l’ambiance. J’ai suivi un peu mon instinct et surtout mes pieds qui ont bien voulu me porter dans la chaleur et la poussière. voilà le résultat.
Vendredi, 22 juin commence avec une petite déception car les circonstances et les indications des officiels pas toujours très utiles et concordantes nous obligent à tourner en rond environ 2 heures pour trouver une place où se garer et puis marcher 25 minutes avant d’atteindre les portes de l’enfer.
J’arrive enfin vers 17h30 mais Joan Jett c’est raté, un concert que voulais absolument voir. Bon ça sera une autre fois, je vais donc voir le concert d’Europe même s’ils n’étaient pas sur ma running order. Le groupe de rock suédois des années 80 ont décidément su garder leur forme et retrouver un nouveau souffle. Un show hyper énergique et vitaminé avec un Joey Tempest, le chanteur, très en forme, souriant et de bonne humeur. Même s’ils mettent en avance les nouvelles chansons de l’album Walk the Earth sorti en 2017, ça fait très plaisir d’écouter les hits les plus connu comme Rock the Night, Superstition et bien évidement The Final Countdown, l’hymne de toute une génération qui clôture le show. Eclate total du public.
Sur la scène à coté, très bonne humeur pour Steven Wilson aussi. Le rocker anglais, communicatif, marrant et un peu sarcastique s’excuse presque d’être là et il se déclare le groupe le moins heavy du festival, en se comparant même à ABBA par rapport aux autres artistes programmés.
Véritable référence en matière de rock progressive, il nous régale d’un set plein de vibes. Son dernier album « To The Bone » qui a connu un très grand succès en France n’est pas beaucoup représenté. Il joue plutôt des morceaux de son ancien groupe Porcupine Tree comme Sleep Together, The Creator has a Mastertape et des titres de ses plusieurs albums solos en choisissant les plus heavy comme il nous a promis. Emotion et riffs impeccablement exécutes sans oublier de nous présenter avec fierté sa guitare Stratocaster 1963.
Hollywood Vampire, la grande surprise de Festival, le super groupe formé par Alice Cooper, Joe Perry et Johnny Depp, un concert qui a probablement marquées les esprits, et franchement une bonne surprise. Un set des reprises (The Jack – d’AC DC ou Ace of Spades de Motorhead) que je n’ai pas vu en totalité, conférence de presse Judas Priest oblige, mais suffisamment pour me rendre compte que Johnny Depp assure pas mal à la guitare. Et Alice Cooper est parfait en maitre de cérémonie. Ils ont le plaisir de jouer ensemble et j’avoue que ça fait quelque chose de les voir sur scène réunis.
Salle archi pleine pour la conférence de presse Judas Priest. Ian Hill (basse), Les Binks (batterie) et Richie Faulkner (guitare) réponds aux questions concernent le nouvel album, Firepower, fraichement sorti dans les bacs. Ils affirment que l’album n’est pas un retour conscient à leurs racines ni le désir de revisiter leur anicien son mais juste une volonté de faire un vrais album Judas Priest, classique et heavy métal. Et le résultat est là. C’est le 19 -ème album et la suite sera le 20eme si tout va bien, promet Ian Hill. Pour l’instant, ils vont se concentrer sur la tournée car jouer sur scène – ça c’est Rock N’ Roll.
Peu de temps après, c’est leur tour sur la Main Stage et ils démarrent avec Firepower, extrais du ce dernier excellent album.
Menés par le charismatique Rob Halford, qui change de tenues quasiment après chaque chanson : véritable défilé de vestes en cuir cloutés, manteaux en jean ou ornés de pailletés dorées et scintillantes, une garde-robe digne du roi de heavy métal, ils enchantent les hits les uns après les autres sous les ovations d’une foule en délire. Painkiller, Breaking the Law, You’ve got another thing coming, Living after midnight, tous leur classiques sont là.
L’arrivée sur la Harley Davidson, sur Hell Bent for Leather, des projections magnifiques sur les écrans géants, une performance extraordinaire et une incroyable voix de Halford – à l’apogée de sa puissance sur Sinner avec des cris aigues hallucinants. Excellent Richie Faulkner à la guitare.
Impressionnant concert mastodonte d’une heure et demi, sans temps mort. Un de plus grand groupe de heavy métal de tous les temps. Bravo !
A Perfect Circle pour la fin de la soirée. Et voilà une très bonne occasion de voir enfin, un groupe fameux que j’ai découvert récemment, bah oui, vu qu’ils n’ont rien sorti depuis 14 ans. Métal frissonnant, progressif, émotif et addictif avec la voix claire du Maynard James Keenan, en pénombre au fond de la scène sur un podium surélevé et un Billy Howerdel excellent à la guitare et voix. Ils ont interprété donc la plupart de chansons de « Eat the Elephant » leur album sorti donc cette année, un sound rempli de noirceur, mélancolie et mystére. Un concert épuré, vibrant, élégant et une reprise de AC /DC en hommage au regretté Malcom Young.
Samedi, je décide de me plonger une peu plus dans l’inconnu et m’aventurer sous les tentes réputées pour les sons death, black et autres métaux extrêmes.
Je commence avec Memoriam sur Altar. Les vétérans britanniques de death metal old school pur et dur, un classique du genre qui plait aux fans.
J’enchaine sur la Main Stage avec Bullet For My Valentine et les gallois mettent le feu avec un show énergique, riffs plombées, vocaux puissantes, batterie incendiaire, hurlements et fureur émotionnelle. Au programme quelques chansons du tout nouvel album : Gravity avec Don’t Need You et Over it mais aussi les classiques Tears Don’t Fall et Walking the Demon. Excellent solo de Jason Bowld à la batterie. Le public adore.
ENSLAVED – les norvégiens mettent le feu sur la scène du Temple. Show très intense, guitares puissantes. Une excellente surprise, un groupe très communicatif, des morceaux remarquablement exécutés, ils sont sympas et le public apprécie. On a même eu le droit à la Marseillaise.
WATAIN pour la fin de ma soirée encore sur Temple. J’atterris droit dans l’enfer avec encore de vikings, cette fois venus de Suède. Un véritable décor d’enfer avec de tridents en flamme, lumières rouges, croix renversées, du black métal ténébreux. Performance scénique apocalyptique, regards fous, visages peintes, hurlements diaboliques, clous et cuirs, là on est vraiment dans le Hell. On a presque peur. Show surpuissant et spectaculaire.
Dimanche, 24 Juin je commence avec le rock puissant et psychédélique de NEBULA. Les américains seront de retour en 2018 avec un nouvel album après 9 ans d’absence. Riffs muscles, du stoner et du blues réunis, du rock expansif, un show énergique made in LA.
Ensuite, conférence de presse sympathique avec le 4 membres de Megadeth. Dave Mustaine, le frontman légendaire aux cheveux roux se prête avec joie aux questions et on apprend qu’ils ont commencé à travailler sur le nouvel album qui sortira probablement l’année prochaine, qu’il n’est pas facile de faire un set list quand on a 200 chansons à l’active et qu’ils ne se considèrent pas vraiment à l’origine du trash métal, même si son ego s’en réjoui. Il se rappelle avec plaisir et nostalgie les tournées et les souvenirs très fun avec Vinnie Paul, le fameux batteur de Pantera, décédé le weekend même.
Une grande foule pour ZEAL and ARDOR sur la Valley. J’avais hâte de voir Manuel Gagneux et ses acolytes sur scène. 4 garçons et une fille (à la basse) des guitares envoutantes, blues, gospel et black métal, des chants d’esclaves et des hurlements, un show simple, original et terriblement puissant qui plait largement au public. Lumières et beaucoup de fumée, une présence scénique forte et des chansons superbement interprétés – Don’t you dare, Gravedigger Chant, Devril is fine, Servants notamment les morceaux de Stranger Fruit, leur deuxième album qui vient de sortir.
J’enchaine ma journée avec à la messe de polonais de Batushka. On se croirait dans une église orthodoxe : le prêtre, le cœur, les robes monacales, des litanies chantés (en vieux slave), de bougies, des encens, un pupitre et des icones et de cranes un peu partout sur scène. On ne sait pas trop qui en croire. Portant des masques en tissue, ce groupe énigmatique nous glace le sang : les guitares sont magnifiques et la voix est venue d’un autre monde. Une grande mise en scène pour une messe noire. Impressionnant et Flippant.
C’est le tour de Megadeth cette fois sur scène. Le quatuor californien commence en trombe mais sur un problème technique car on n’entend rien : pas de guitare, pas de voix et on a l’impression que personne ne se rend compte. Le deuxième morceaux Hangar 18 est déjà mieux mais tout va revenir à la normale au bout de quelques morceaux.
Chevelures dans le vent, superbes solos, voix cassée, les rois de trash métal, ne démentent pas leur réputation : Symphony of Destruction avec Michael Amott de Arch Enemy en Guest, Dystopia extrais de leur dernier album, Holly Wars et My Last Words dédiée au regretté Vinnie Paul.
Et voilà qu’enfin Iron Maiden débarquent sur la Main Stage avec Aces High, un véritable avion de guerre suspendu au milieu de la scène et un Bruce Dickinson évidement habillé en pilote, casque et lunettes de rigueur.
Le show qui fait partie de la tournée Legacy of the Beast est inspiré du jeu pour mobile et de la bande dessine du même nom, donc le design de la scène représente plusieurs mondes, des décors gigantesques, effets spéciaux et des mises en scènes variés.
Une collection d’hymnes Iron Maiden pour deux heures d’affilée sans le moindre relâche. Un frontman en forme olympique, qui n’a pas cessé de courir en long et en large, une voix parfaite, performance théâtrale, costumes, Iron Maiden incontestablement au sommet de leur carrière.
Des effets de scènes théâtraux accompagnent Where Eagles Dare, 2 Minutes to Midnight, The Clansman… une bataille s’engage entre Bruce Dickinson et Eddy sur The Trooper.
Revelations, Flight of Icarus et Fear of the Dark, The Number of the Beast, Iron Maiden…le tempo ne descend pas et les nombreux fans porteurs de T-shits Iron Maiden ou pas sont plus que ravis.
The Evil That Men Do, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run to the Hills en rappel laissent le public eblui.
Lanceur des flammes, joli discours en français de Dickinson -Liberté Egalité Fraternité- avant le The Clansman, show spectaculaire Iron Maiden est un groupe mythique et généreux qui adore jouer ensemble et adore son public.
Et voilà pour moi, Hellfest 2018 se termine sur cette prestation remarquable.
En quittant la main stage 1, sur les grands écrans commencent à défiler les premiers noms qui seront présents l’année prochaine – Slayer, DropKick Murphys, Carcass, Mass Hysteria et une grande surprise quand sur la scène à coté Joey DeMaio himself débarque pour nous annoncer personnellement que MANOWAR seront là en 2019.
Une édition 2019 d’un festival incontournable qui s’annonce explosive. See you next year Headbangers!

Heat, sweat, fire and flames, huge crowd, bursting sound, raging guitars and growling – you know already – today, I’ll talk about the HELLFEST’s 13th round.
This year, we had again a burning sun for the 3 days of the biggest metal festival in Europe which took place from 22 to 24 June 2018 on the lands of Clisson, France. The huge headliners, revelations, discoveries, the excellent line-up counted more than 160 artists rock, hard, heavy, death, black etc… metal.
6 stages: 2 Main Stages flanked by 3 huge screens to follow the gigs easily of far and 4 other stages – Altar, Temple, Valley, War Zone arranged roughly in a circle around bars, restaurants, famous arty rusty steel containers or iron sculptures. The Big Wheel and official merchandising shops with huge waiting line still in place.
The new structures also appeared on the site: 2 black frames fountains spreading water walls made the delight of the headbangers. Crossing underneath, it was their greatest pleasure and a great way to refresh, while at night, you could admire bright projections on water jets.
A new bar with a gigantic ball as a planet erupting, spewing flames and fire has also emerged. Great atmosphere at night with the colourful stacked containers.
In VIP area, we still can find the huge gothic elegant bar and this time we could also watch the football (yeah, it was World Cup), the pretty fountain well-supervised by the 4 guardians of the temple of metal, this time suspended below a blood red water and the skull fountain -pool that serves for some bold ones to search some freshness.
Joy and good mood to the program this Week End with metalheads came from all over the world to have fun and enjoy the good music. Original costumes, colorful characters joined the majority of festivalgoers wearing dark clothes.
As about my musical journey, I oscillated between two Main Stages without forgetting the tents dedicated to extreme music and to the most unexpected and weird shows.
Still no concert in Warzone because a little too far, but just a passage to see the ambience. I try to follow my instinct a little bit and especially my feet who agreed to carry me in the heat and dust along the weekend. This is the result.
Friday, June 22 starts with a little disappointment because the circumstances and indications of officials were not always very useful and it took us 2 hours to find a place where to park the car and then walk 25 minutes before to reach the gates of Hell.
Just in time to miss Joan Jett concert, who was on the top of my list. Instead, I went to see Europe’s gig who was not on running order. But finally, I am happy with this as the Swedish rock 80s band are definitely in very good shape. A super energetic and wonderful show with a smiling Joey Tempest, the singer, in a very good mood and voice. Even if they play a lot of new songs from the album Walk the Earth out in 2017, it’s been very fun to listen to their best-known hits like Rock the Night, Superstition and of course The Final Countdown, the anthem of a generation which end the show. The audience totally enjoys.
On the stage nearby, very good mood for Steven Wilson also. The English rocker is very communicative, funny and somewhat sarcastic as he almost apologizes for being there and he claims to be the less heavy band of the festival, a sort of ABBA compared to other artists in the line-up.
His latest album, “To The Bone”, a great success in France is not much represented. He plays rather tracks of his former band Porcupine Tree like Sleep Together, The Creator has a Mastertape and also titles of his several solo albums by choosing the heavier as he promised us. Emotion, positive vibes and guitar riffs impeccably executed without forgetting to present us with pride his guitar -Stratocaster 1963.

And the result is there. This is the 19th album and the next step will be the 20th if everything goes well, according to Ian Hill. For now, they’re going to focus on the tour because playing on stage – it is Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Later in the evening it’s their turn on the Main Stage and they start with Firepower. The Halford’s arrival on the Harley Davidson on Hell Bent for Leather, projection on giant screens, an extraordinary performance and an incredible high and powerful voice of the frontman on Sinner with some mind-blowing acute cries. Excellent Richie Faulkner on guitar. Impressive mastodon concert of one hour and a half, without any dead time. One of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. Bravo!
Follow a good dose of A Perfect Circle for the end of the evening. And that’s a famous band that I discovered recently, well Yes, because they have not released anything for 14 years. Addictive, shuddering, emotional progressive metal with a lovely singer Maynard James Keenan, placed in the shadow on a raised podium and a Billy Howerdel excellent guitar and voice.
They played most of “Eat the Elephant” songs, their album released this year, a sound full of darkness, melancholy and mystery. A sleek, vibrant, elegant concert and an AC DC cover as a tribute to Malcom Young.
Saturday, I decided to dive a bit more into the unknown and venture myself under the tents of extreme metal.
I start with Memoriam on Altar stage. The British veterans of old school hardcore death metal, a classic who pleases the fans.
Bullet For My Valentine follows on Main Stage and the Welsh set the fire with an energetic show, furious vocals and incendiary drums. Screams and emotion, they introduce some new songs from the new album: Gravity. Including Don’t Need You and Over it, but also classics Tears Don’ t Fall and Walking the Demon. Jason Bowld excellent drums solo. The audience loves.
ENSLAVED -on Temple the Norwegians offer a very intense remarkable show, with powerful guitars and vocals. A great surprise, a very communicative band, the guys are nice and the audience appreciates. We even had the right to the Marseillaise.
WATAIN for the end of my evening I go back on Temple and I land straight into hell with Vikings, this time from Sweden. Tridents in flame, red lights, inverted cross, black dark metal ambience. Apocalyptic stage performance, crazy gazes, painted faces, devilish howls, nails and leather, we’re really in the Hell. We are scared. Overkill and spectacular show.
Sunday, I start with the powerful psychedelic rock of NEBULA. The Americans will be back in 2018 with a new album after 9 years of absence. Sharp riffs, stoner rock and blues of expansive rock, a show energetic made in LA.
Then, nice press conference with the 4 members of Megadeth. Next welcome to Batushka’s mass on Temple. The stage strangely looks like an Orthodox Church: the priest, the monastic robes, litanies Sung (in old Slavic), candles, incense, a desk, icons and skulls everywhere on stage. Wearing masks in tissue, this enigmatic Polish band freeze our blood. The guitars are beautiful and the voice came from another world. A great setting for a black mass. Impressive and scary.
It’s the turn of Megadeth this time on stage. The Californian Quartet starts with technical problem because we can’t hear anything: no guitar, no voice and one has the impression that no one is aware. The second track Hangar 18 is already better, but everything is back to normal only after 3-4 songs.
Hair in the wind, amazing swirling riffs, broken voice, the Kings of thrash metal, not belie their reputation: Symphony of Destruction with Michael Amott of Arch Enemy in Guest, Dystopia extract from their latest album, Holly Wars and My Last Words dedicated to Vinnie Paul.
Finally, Iron Maiden landed on the Main Stage with Aces High, a real war plane suspended in the middle of the stage and a Bruce Dickinson obviously dressed in pilot: appropriate helmet and sunglasses.
The show, which is part of the Legacy of the Beast tour is inspired by the mobile phone game and an eponym comic book so the design of the stage is representing several worlds with huge sets and special effects.
