Avec l’album de mois de mai, je vous propose une incursion dans le monde de FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, incontestablement l’un des plus grands groupes de la scène métal actuelle.
Couronnés disques d’or et de platine plusieurs fois ses dernières années, le quintette originaire de Las Vegas vient de sortir un nouvel album « And Justice for None » (chez Eleven Seven Music) produit par Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed, Papa Roach), le 7eme depuis leur émergence en 2007.
Il faut savoir que à ce jour, le groupe American comptabilise pas moins de 2 billions de streamings, ce qui représente plus que U2, Muse ou Radiohead sur Spotify…
En écoutant ce dernier opus, il est assez facile de comprendre les deux facettes de FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, car grosso modo leur son oscille entre 2 tempos : l’up tempo furieux, bouillonnant et enragé et un autre lent et puissant avec de ballades colossales.
Urgence et frénésie, le son est donc tantôt agressif, tantôt mélancolique, des refrains catchy et des solos brulants : Zoltan Bathory et Jason Hook s’en chargent aux guitares – Chris Kael officie à la basse, et Jeremy Spencer imprime sa signature galopante à la batteries, accompagnés par le chant d’inébranlable, presque antagoniste de Ivan Moody qui alterne facilement le growl des ténèbres avec le chant émotionnel et poignant.
« And Justice for None » démarre en force et met la barre très haut avec Troubles, Fake et Top Of The World, des morceaux rapides et violents qui impriment immédiatement leur style reconnaissable. Grosse poussée d’adrénaline.
Sham Pain est le premier morceau qui change la formule et ralentie un peu le rythme. On glisse un peu vers le glam-rock, avec une touche d’électro et un chant rappé. Une chanson vraiment diversifiée nettement différent des autres.
Blue on Black, la cover de Kenny Wayne Shepherd, nous plonge vers la partie plus calme de l’album – la voix puissante de Moody rapporte une tournure décidément plus lourde au blues classique de l’original.
I refuse est porté par des belles lignes de piano et un solo acoustique magnifique, du spleen, et une superbe voix, habitée et sincère « Wake me up when this is over, I’m tired of living life like its a dream… »
Sur When The Seasons Change et Stuck In My Ways, ils s’exercent encore aux « kick-ass ballads » avec chant superbe d’introspection d’un front man qui semble exorciser et combattre se démons personnels par le biais de la musique.
Artillerie lourde et solide sur It Doesn’t Matter, Rock Bottom, Bad Seeds et pour compléter le contingent infernal et sans relâche. Bloody rajoutent ajoute un soupçon pop-rock à la marmite.
Gone Away – la cover de The Offspring – se métamorphose complétement sous une belle lenteur étonnante, très loin du rythme de l’original – totalement réussi.
Décidément 5FDP a bien survécu à des nombreux changements de line-up au cours des années, à un procès pénible avec leur anicien label et à la cure de désintoxication de Moody et reste toujours fidèles à leur signature sonore.
« And Justice for None » est un très bon équilibre entre la rage de morceaux heavy métal et la mélancolie des ballades rock, une formule qui claque fort et qui accentue les deux manières dans lesquelles le chanteur expose ses griefs contre les malheurs du monde.
Moody montre avec succès ses gammes vocales, tout en permettant à ces copains de bande de montrer leur talent et briller chacun à son poste. On dira qu’ils fonctionnent parfaitement bien, comme les cinq doigts de la main…

With the album of this month, I introduce you a smashing band, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, undoubtedly one of the biggest bands of the actual heavy metal scene.
Several times gold and platinum record these last years, the quintet of Las Vegas has just released a new album “And Justice for None” (Eleven seven Music) produced by Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed, Papa Roach), the 7th one since the band emerged in 2007. A fact that you should know, it’s that the American band counts not less 2 trillion of streamings, representing more than U2, Muse or Radiohead on Spotify…
Listening to this album, it is quite easy to understand the two facets of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, as their sound roughly oscillates between 2 tempos: the up tempo -furious, bubbling and rabid and another one – slow and powerful with huge “kick ass” ballads.
Emergency and frenzy, the sound is sometimes aggressive, sometimes melancholic, catchy choruses and burning solos: Zoltan Bathory and Jason Hook deals with guitars – Jeremy Spencer keep the galloping drums signature, Chris Kael and his bass lines accompanied by the singing of unwavering, almost antagonistic Ivan Moody, who easily is alternating the darkness growl with emotional and poignant vocals.
“And Justice for None”, starts in force and sets the bar very high with Trouble, Fake, and Top Of The World, fast and violent tracks, that immediately reveal their recognizable style. Adrenaline pumping.
Sham Pain is the first song that changes the formula and slowed the pace. A touch of glam-rock, with some electro beats and a rapping chant.
Blue on Black, Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s cover invite us to a calmer part of the album. The powerful Moody’s voice definitely brings a heavier twist to the classic original blues song.
I refuse is driven by beautiful piano lines and acoustic solo guitar- spleen and inhabited, sincere vocals: “Wake me up when this is over, I’m tired of living life like it’s a dream…”
They practice perfectly the “power ballads” on When the Seasons Change and Stuck In My Ways, great songs of introspection of a front man who exorcise and fight his personal demons through music.
Heavy artillery on It does not Matter, Rock Bottom, Bad Seeds to complete the contingent of madness. Bloody adds a hint of pop-rock.
Gone Away – The Offspring ’s cover – is utterly metamorphosed under the slow, amazing, very different pace from the original.
Definitelly, 5FDP survived of many changes of line-up over the years, to a trial with their old label and to the Moody’s rehab and remain loyal to their signature sound.
“And Justice for None” is a very good balance between the infernal heavy metal songs and melancholy of rock ballads, a smashing formula which accentuates the two ways in which the singer exposes his grievances against the misfortunes of the world. Moody successfully shows his vocal capabilities, while allowing to his band buddies to show their talent and be brilliant each of them at his job.
We could say that they get on well, as the five fingers of one hand…
