Ugly Kid Joe celebrates 25th anniversary of America’s Least Wanted – Bataclan – 05.05.2018

Début 90, « les sales gosses » californians d’Ugly Kid Joe avaient connu un succès fulgurant avec l’EP – As Ugly as They Wanna Be et surtout, avec leur premier album America’s Least Wanted, sorti en 1992 et porté par 2 morceaux /vidéos qui tournaient en boucle sur MTV – Everything About You et Cats in the Cradle.

25 ans après, voilà que les américains fêtent cet album mythique avec une méga tournée qui s’achevait au Bataclan à Paris, le 5 mai 2018.

Whitfield Crane – chant, Klaus Eichstadt – guitare, chœurs, Cordell Crockett – guitare, basse, chœurs Dave Fortman – guitare, chœurs et le dernier arrivée de la bande, Zac Morris , à la batterie depuis 2012, ont organisé une sacrée soirée d’anniversaire, devant une parterre de nostalgiques et pas seulement.

L’ouverture des festivités est confiée aux jeunes anglais de Stone Broken et leur punchy hard rock d’inspiration américaine. Dignes héritiers de Def Leppard ou WhiteSnake, le quatuor est venu présenter leur deuxième album Ain’t always easy dont je vous ai déjà parlé ici.

Un très bon show avec des musiciens talentueux Rich (voix, guitare), Keiron (Bass), Chris (Guitare) et la pétillante et très souriante Robyn à la batterie qui nous offre un petit solo bien juteux derrière son kit. Un set list énergique et efficace que le public a bien apprécié. Ils reviendront au Download festival en juin.

Quand les Ugly Kids Joe arrivent sur scène, les fans sont déjà bien chauds et en délire, les bras et les bières en air, l’accueil est fantastique. Ça saute, ça danse et ça chante et cela va durer jusqu’à la fin du show.

Reprenant la quasi-totalité du l’album mythique, les morceaux s’enchainent, le son est très bon et les musiciens sont excellents – voix puissante – bass- guitare – batterie – tout est en place et super bien rodé.

Certes, les « ugly kids » ont un peu vieilli, les longues chevelures ne sont plus là, mais ils ont gardé la pêche, les shorts, les chaussettes. Sauf Zac qui porte avec fierté le slip français (en rouge) et tient à nous le montrer plusieurs fois.

Grungy hard and heavy, les chansons n’ont rien perdu de leur énergie. Whit éprouve un grand plaisir de communiquer avec le public et le demander en permanence « Are you Happy ? ». Et le public le lui rend bien. Des fans vraiment au top qui s’attirent de compliments de la part du chanteur avec un « Vous déchirez » apris par quelque dans la foule.

Beaucoup d’animation, les gens n’arrentent pas de monter sur scène, faire des checks, bumps ou des accoladés avec Whit, avant de se jeter dans la foule. Finalement, cela commence à devenir un peu lourd. Le gars de la sécurité intervient de plus un plus souvent. Les musiciens sont un peu embêtés. Ils commencent même à crier « get off the stage » accompagné par le public.

Sans surprise, Cat’s in the Cradle est repris en chœur par le public. Pour Mr Recordmen, Whit invite Klaus de prendre le micro, pas avant de le présenter comme le gars timide de la bande, et demander à l’audience de scander son nom pour l’encourager.

Quelques morceaux de l’EP – Stairway To Hell sorti en 2012 et qui avait marqué leur retour– No one Survives, Devrils ’ Paradise , I’m All Right et 2 excellentes reprises Sweet Leaf de Black Sabatth et Ace of Spades de Motorhead qui met la foule en plein délire, complètent la soirée.

Whit raconte comment c’était inespéré de se réunir après 17 ans d’absence et repartir sur la route.

Le chanteur fait monter 3 gamins sur scène, venus avec leur maman et s’étonne de comment c’est cool en France le fait que les parents ramènent leurs gamins aux concerts rock.

Deux personnes présentes en gradins (apparemment les médecines de la soirée) attirent son attention et il plaisantera plusieurs fois dans la soirée en leur dédiant même des chansons.

Le show est clôturé avec le mega hit Everything About You, chanté en majorité par les fans.

Un concert de dingue, une joie immense, un groupe qui tienne ses promesses, un album qui brille encore 25 ans après sa sortie et une audience au top. Excellent !

Early 90s, the Californians Ugly Kid Joe had a massive success with the Ep –As Ugly as They Wanna Be and especially, with their first album America’s Least Wanted, released in 1992 and carried by 2 hits/videos with a huge rotation on MTV – Everything About You and Cats in the Cradle.

25 years later, the Americans celebrated this legendary album with a mega tour that ended at the Bataclan in Paris, on May 5th, 2018.

Whitfield Crane – vocals, Klaus Eichstadt – guitar, backing vocals, Cordell Crockett – bass guitar, backing vocals, Dave Fortman – guitar, backing vocals and the newest one of the band, Zac Morris on drums since 2012, offered a big birthday party in front of a great nostalgic audience and not only.

The opening of the festivities is done by the young British band, Stone Broken and their punchy hard rock of American inspiration. Worthy heirs of Def Leppard and White Snake, the quartet came to present their second album Ain’t Always Easy, about what I have already spoken here.

A great show with talented musicians Rich (voice, guitar), Keiron (Bass), Chris (guitar) and the sparkling and very smiling Robyn on drums who offers us a little juicy solo behind her kit.

An energetic and effective set-list that the audience absolutely enjoyed. They will return to the Download Festival Paris in June.

When the Ugly Kid Joe arrives on stage, the fans are already warm and cheering, arms and beers in the air. The welcome is fantastic. Everyone jumps, dance and sing and it will will be like this all along the evening.

They will perform almost all tracks of the iconic album. The sound is very good and the musicians are excellent – powerful voice – bass -guitar-drums – everything is in place and great run-in.

Certainly, the “ugly kids” are a little bit older now, the long hairs are gone, but they kept the energy, the shorts and socks. Except Zac who wear with pride “le slip Français” (French underwear) -in red version.

Grungy, hard and heavy, the songs have lost none of their energetic vibes. Whit proove a great pleasure to communicate with the audience and ask constantly “Are you Happy? Fans are really on top and receive the frontman’s admiration expressed with a “You Rock” – “Vous dechirez” said in French and learned from someone in the crowd.

People keep climbing on stage, bumps or hugs with Whit, before diving into the crowd. Finally, it starts to become a little bit heavy. The security guy comes more and more often.

The musicians are a little annoyed. They are even starting to scream “get off the stage” accompanied by the audience.

Not surprisingly, huge singalong for Cat’s in the Cradle. For Mr Recordmen, Whit invites Klaus to take the microphone, not before introducing him as the “shy guy” of the band and ask the audience to give him big applauses and chanting his name to encourage him.

A few songs of the EP – Stairway To Hell released in 2012 that had marked their return – No one Survives, Devril’s Paradise, I’m All Right and 2 excellent covers Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath and Ace of Spades by Motorhead complete the evening.

Whit tells how it was unexpected to get together after 17 years of absence and go back on the road, Super cool atmosphere. The singer will even ask 3 kids came with their mother to climb on stage and wonders how it’s cool in France that parents bring their kids to rock concerts.

The show end up with an explosive Everything About You sung mostly by the fans.

A crazy craziness gig, a great joy, a band that kept their promise, an album that still shine 25 years after and an audience on top. Awesome!
