The King Welcomes the Parisians in AVATAR country – Live Report – 14.03.2018

Avatar et sa majesté, le Roi du Pays d’Avatar, ont accueilli les Parisiens dans leur royaume improvisé au Trianon, le 14 mars 2018, et les a bénis avec un show spectaculaire qui affichait complet.

C’était mon premier concert du puissant groupe de métal suédois et je dois dire, que cette visite au royaume m’a absolument impressionnée.

Un show théâtral, esthétique et original devant leur plus nombreux public pour un concert européen, en tête d’affiche.

Costumes, maquillage, mise en scène, pour ne pas mentionner le son métal mélodique fantastique, tout a été parfaitement orchestré de début à la fin.

Leur nouvel opus, Avatar Country, sorti le 12 janvier 2018, est le deuxième album concept de la formation scandinave (en total, ils ont à leur active 7 albums depuis 2006) racontant l’histoire du roi du pays d’Avatar, ce roi étant en fait, le guitariste et fondateur du groupe Jonas « Kungen (The King) » Jarlsby.

Comme sur l’album, le show débute avec « Glory To Our King » joué dans les haut-parleurs, et « The King » coiffé d’une couronne, une cape sur les épaules et sa guitare en guise de sceptre, fait son apparition sur un trône géant derrière la batterie.

Après avoir salué le public, sous un tonnerre de cris et d’applaudissements, il commence calmement gratter sa guitare sur « Legends Of The King »

Ses acolytes arrivent sur scène et ils nous embarquent dans une performance loufoque, haute en couleur, un show où chaque détail est bien soigné. Frais, original et accrocheur.

Somkey eyes, cheveux longs, les cinq garçons portent des vestes en velour noires, style médiéval gothique, (ils vont les changer avec la version en blanc vers la fin du show), pantalons noirs avec une rayure jaune sur les côtes et des bottes en cuir. Conte Dracula, où est tu ? (le guitariste Tim Öhrströ me fait vraiment penser à Gary Oldman dans le film de Francis Ford Coppola)

Johannes Eckerström, grand et mince, le frontman extrêmement charismatique, porte un chapeau noir, une blouse lavallière en dentelle et une élégante redingote de même style ( il la changera contre une rouge plus tard dans le soirée).

Fou de scène, visage peint façon Kiss, Alice Cooper croisés avec le Joker du Batman, il enchaîne les mimiques théâtrales et clownesques.

Voix puissante, il passe par plusieurs registres totalement différents : chant mélancolique clair qui s’échange en grognements venus de l’enfer et repart sur un style plus rock n’ roll.

La set- list est un grand mélange de nouvelles chansons (Glory To Our King, Legend Of The King, The King Wants You, Kings’ Harvest), mais aussi les préfères de fans comme Paint Me Red, Puppet Show, Smells Like A Freakshow, The Eagle Has Landed – avec une foule en délire, chantant et agitant les bras en l’air sur le refrain catchy, doublé par des guitares lourdes.

Headbanging frénétique, regards diaboliques, monologues effrayants, nuages de fumée, lumières glaçantes et ambiance vampirique, les citoyens des pays de l’Avatar sont profondément émergés dans un monde chaotique où toutes les chansons semblent avoir une histoire à raconter. Les festivités sont merveilleuses.

Les guitares sont phénoménales avec un duel exceptionnel de Jonas Jarlsby et Tim Öhrströ, accompagnés par l’excellent Henrik Sandelin à la basse et la batterie dantesque de John Alfredsson. Un show maitrisé à la perfection.

Johannes communique très bien, il nous rappelle que chaque concert à Paris, depuis 2006, reste encore gravé dans sa mémoire rendant le public fier et enthousiaste. Paris fait maintenant officiellement partie de la famille Avatar.

Un concert au sommet, électrisant et troublant, avec chaque membre du groupe jouant son rôle sur scène à la perfection. Un spectacle mémorable à couper le souffle devant un public ravi et unanime.

Avatar and their King welcome the Parisians to Avatar Country last Wednesday, 14^th of March 2018, at Trianon and blessed them with a spectacular Sold Out show.

This was my first time seeing the mighty Avatar from Gothenburg, Sweden live and I must say I was incredibly impressed. They literally burned out the stage with a theatrical, aesthetic, original and amazing gig in front of their largest audience ever for a headline show in Europe. And on this occasion the Parisians fans were officially welcomed into the Avatar Family.

Costumes, make up, arty staging… not to mention the fantastic melodic metal sound, everything was perfectly orchestrated.

Their new album, called Avatar Country released January 12, 2018 is the second concept album of the band (they released 7 albums in total since 2006) telling the story of the King of Avatar Country, this King being the guitarist and founder of the band Jonas “Kungen (The King)” Jarlsby.

As the album, the show opens with Glory To Our King played over the speakers, the band took to the stage with “The King” wearing cape, crown and guitar as sceptre) appeared on giant throne behind the drumkit and calmly strumming his guitar on Legend Of The King.

Smokey eyes, long hair, the five guys are wearing black gothic mediaeval jackets (they will switch to white ones by the end of the show), black pants and leather boots. Count Dracula Where are you? (The guitarist Tim Öhrströ really reminds me of Gary Oldman in the Francis Ford Coppola’s film).

Johannes Eckerström, tall and thin, the immensely charismatic frontman is wearing hat, skull walking stick, an elegant medieval frock coat and ascot lace blouse. His face is awesomely painted with a mix between Kiss, Alice Cooper and the Joker of Batman.

Madman on stage, his interpretation is utterly various, he is able to move from a clear delicate melancholic singing to the grunts from hell and back again to a Rock N ‘Roll vocal style.

Frenzy headbanging, theatrical face expressions, devil looks, creepy monologues…

He is very close to the French audience, revealing that since their first show in Paris in 2006, he is reminding every single show, making proud the enthusiastic audience.

Fresh, catchy and original. The festivities are stunning.

Phenomenal duel guitars of Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrströ , accompanied by the excellent Henrik Sandelin on bass and John Alfredsson behind his massive dantesque drum kit.

The set list is a great mix of new songs (Glory To Our King, Legend Of The King, The King wants you or King’ harvest ) as well as a bunch of fan favourites such as Paint Me Red, Puppet Show, Smells Like A Freakshow, The Eagle Has Landed – with a crowd singing like crazy and waving the arms in the air on the catchy chorus doubled by heavy guitars.

Everything fits together to transport the hot crowd into their magical kingdom.

Cloud of smoke, vampiric ambience, and frozen lights the Citizens of Avatar country are totally emerged in a melodic death metal, in a chaotic world where every song seems to have a story to tell very intricate and precise.

A gig on a high, electrifying and shivering. Every member of the band played perfectly his role on stage and the crowd reaction was immediate and unanimous.

Memorable performance, energetic vibes, a creative artistic show that literally took my breath away.

Keep an eye on these guys and next time they are in town, pay a visit to the Avatar Country. The King Wants You!
