A l’occasion de la sortie du 5 ème album éponyme de Pop Evil, 16 fevrier 2018, (review ici), j’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer la batteuse anglaise, Hayley Cramer et discuter nouvel album, tambours, mode, cuisine, diner avec sa rock star préférée et plein d’autres choses.
Rencontre avec une fille passionnée, ambitieuse, une vraie geek de la batterie qui sait ce qu’elle veut.
C’est la première fois quand tu enregistres avec les gars, comment ça s’est passé ?
Hayley : C’était génial. On a fait la tournée ensemble pendant un an et demi, donc on a réussi à se connaître assez bien, mais on n’avait pas encore écrit une seule chanson ensemble.
Étant le membre plus récent du groupe, travailler dans le studio, m’a permis de voir l’autre côté, leur côté écriture. J’ai aussi découvert l’autre côté de moi. Car mon côté écriture est différent de moi sur scène.
Les albums précédents ont été écrits alors qu’ils étaient en tournée, mais cette fois, on a fait la tournée et on a pris un peu de temps pour nous, avant d’entrer dans le studio.
Une fois dans le studio, nous étions ensemble, tous, tout le temps. Et cela se voit réellement sur l’album. Chaque beat, chaque riff de guitare, chaque mélodie, chaque parole… on a eu tous une influence et notre mot à dire, ce qui a fait un album meilleur, plus honnête et plus vrai.
Pourquoi un self-title album cette fois ?
Hayley : C’est parce que sur cet album les garçons ont créé le son qu’ils ont toujours voulu créer. Et ils lui ont consacré aussi le temps et le dévouement, ils ont toujours voulu.
C’est le son Pop Evil le plus vrai que tu puisses avoir.
Il n’ya pas eu de pression, ils sont plus âgés et plus sages, ils savent ce qu’ils veulent, ils se connaissent mieux. Le self -title, c’est la naissance et le prochain chapitre.
Pour toi, quelle est donc, l’évolution principale par rapport à « Up » ? Cette fois le son est plus heavy, le message plus politique…
Hayley : Sur « UP » tu trouves les morceaux de Pop Evil qui ont connus le plus grand succès dans les charts. Mais ces chansons avaient plutôt un coté très pop.
Et il ya eu un nombre considérable de fans qui on réagit en demandant où est le heavy sound.
Donc, il était important de ne pas se tromper cette fois. Il y a toujours les 2 côtés de Pop Evil : le côté heavy et le côté poppy accrocheur.
Onyx était heavy et UP plus pop. Maintenant, nous avons mélangé ces 2 et nous avons trouvé le bon équilibre.
En tant que drummer, quel est le morceau le plus important pour toi ?
Hayley : Je pense que « Ex Machina » a été une chanson massive pour moi dans le studio. Elle met vraiment en évidence l’ensemble de kits que j’ai eu : 3 différents kits prêts à enregistrer 24 sur 24, 7 sur 7.
J’ai eu le kit rock, standard, avec le son gras et bien lourd que tout le monde connait. J’ai eu ce que j’appelle « mon monde bizarre » avec des trucs suspendus partout, un kit dans lequel je tape et je crée des harmoniques vraiment bizarres, aigues et étranges. Et le troisième, un kit électronique.
Sur « Ex Machina » tu entends distinctement les passages d’un kit à l’autre. Le morceau commence avec le son lourd et puissant, ensuite les sons bizarres et puis en dessous on entend celui électronique.
C’est une chanson je suis vraiment impatiente de jouer en live.
Dans le studio, j’ai eu 3 kits et pour la scène je construis presque un vaisseau spatial où je vais condenser les 3 en un seul kit, légèrement plus grand que celui d’avant.
Je mélange beaucoup d’électronique, il y aura un clavier car je joue du piano sur l’album également. C’est une aventure de travailler là-dessous.
«God’s Damn » est aussi une chanson qui restera avec moi pour toujours. Je pense que c’est la chanson qui capture mon vrai style de jouer de la batterie.
Oublie les cloches, les sifflets et les trucs électroniques, juste la façon de jouer de la batterie, c’est mon truc.
Certains diront que ça sonne un peu TOTO sur « Rosanna ». Et je vais dire oui, c’est mon jam, j’adore ça.
J’aime beaucoup de groupes mais TOTO, reste le plus important. Quand j’ai appris à jouer de la batterie, je volais obtenir ces ghost notes, ce groove et ce feeilng.
Comment as-tu choisi la batterie ?
Hayley : Je viens d’une famille musicale. Mon père est bassiste, mon frère aîné est batteur et ma sœur aînée est chanteuse. Quand j’étais petite, j’ai commencé avec le piano puis j’ai chanté, j’ai essayé la flûte, le trombone, la guitare.
J’aimais tout mais quand je me suis assis derrière le kit de mon frère, j’ai su tout de suite ce que je dois faire. Je ne pouvais plus penser à autre chose. Je me souviens de ce que je portais ce jour-là, de tout ce que j’ai ressenti assise derrière ce kit pour la 1ère fois.
C’était tout pour moi et c’est resté comme cela.
Je me réveille chaque jour et je pense à la batterie.Je suis plus heureuse que jamais quand je suis assise derrière mon kit. Je me sens bénie.
Je pense qu’il n’y a pas une bonne ou une mauvaise façon de vivre sa vie, mais je sens vraiment que je suis le genre de personne qui n’a pas de Plan B. J’ai juste un Plan A et je vais le faire marcher.
Ton batteur préféré ?
Hayley : Oh gosh, c’est une question difficile, il y a tellement – Jeff Porcaro (TOTO) pour le groove. Pour l’énergie Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) et Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) – ils ont changé ma vision dans mon adolescence.
Mark Richardson (Skunk Anansie) a été une grosse influence aussi. Un batteur joue fort, mais il faut toujours avoir les soft touches. C’est la clé. Pour moi, tout est au tour de ces ghost notes.
Steward Copeland (Police), Simon Philips…J’écoutais très jeune, quand j’étais dans la voiture de ma mère…Queen, Phil Collins.
Je suis un total geek de la batterie. Je n’ai pas pris des cours. Je suis plutôt autodidacte, style regarder des vidéos et apprendre par moi-même les techniques.

Que trouvons-nous dans le dressing d’une drummer queen ?
Hayley : J’aime les jeans, les T-shirts, les blousons en cuir. Je veux être féminine, mais j’ai aussi un travail très actif.
Je porte beaucoup la marque All Saints. Je trouve, que leurs vêtements ont le parfait look androgyne. Leurs T-shirts loose fit me permettent de bouger dedans. Beaucoup de ma garde-robe est adaptée et contient de pièces dans lesquels, je suis en mesure de bouger facilement.
Je pense aussi que les femmes ne doivent pas se dévoiler totalement. Je veux devenir connue pour ma passion pour la musique et pour ce que j’ai fait musicalement.
Tu as un vêtement, bijou qui t’accompagne toujours en tournée ?
Hayley : Je peux parler make- up ? Le fond de teint MAC. Il m’a fallu beaucoup de temps pour trouver le bon fond de teint qui résiste à la sueur sur scène. Et le fond de teint long wear de MAC est un must.
Si tu as un dîner imprévu et tu dois être prête en 5 minutes tu mettrais quoi ?
Hayley : Un top sympa avec une texture fluide ou un T-shirt épaules dénudés (pour montrer mes muscles, haha), un jean et une jolie veste en velours.
Je porte très rarement des robes. En robe, je me sens si loin de ce que je suis et ce que je fais.
Et si tu vas à ce dîner avec ton rock star préférée, ça sera qui ?
Hayley : Freddie Mercury. Quand je me réveille le matin à la maison, la première chose que je regarde, c’est un poster de lui. Je l’admire pour la passion, l’honnêteté en lui et qui m’ont toujours inspiré. Et juste pour l’entendre parler, sa voix est lisse comme le chocolat mais des fois pourrait être tellement coupante.
Je pense que c’est l’une des plus grandes rock stars, chanteur, auteur-compositeur. La définition absolue de génie. Seulement 2 minutes avec Freddie Mercury, ça serait formidable.
L’Art Work de la pochette, pourquoi ce lion avec tous ces symboles, cranes, aliens sur sa tête…
Hayley : L’album parle des toutes ces choses que nous avons actuellement dans nos têtes et que devront les affronter. Le Lion est le symbole du courage pour accepter ces choses, de les parcourir et de les comprendre. C’est le reflet de notre société, des médias sociaux, de nos luttes et de toutes les informations qui viennent à nous.
Quand on regarde la pochette tu observes une chose et puis, si on la regarde le lendemain et on voit une autre chose. J’aime ça.
Ton réseau social préféré ?
Hayley : Instagram. Je ne suis pas une personne à Twitter.
J’ai un compte Twitter parce que c’est lié à Facebook et Instagram, mais je ne vais pas vraiment sur Twitter pour écrire mon état d’esprit. Ce n’est pas mon style.
Ce n’est pas parce que je n’ai pas des choses à dire… Je sens que si j’ai des choses à dire je les dirais effectivement. Je ne vais pas les taper.
Instagram, c’est plus où je suis : capturer d’images, vidéos, un clin d’œil à ce que je fais.
La tournée commence bientôt. Avez-vous prévu de venir en France ?
Hayley : Nous commençons en février et nous espérons vraiment venir en France car il y a grande demande ici. Paris est toujours en tête de liste.
Ce qui est le plus difficile pour toi en tournée ?
Hayley : Le manque de sommeil et garder l’énergie. Et aussi, chercher constamment à faire mieux. Je suis assez dure avec moi-même et être sur la route met en évidence pour moi tous mes défauts.
Ce que tu aimes faire en dehors de la musique ?
Hayley : J’aime cuisiner, quand je suis à la maison, j’essaie plein de choses. Ces derniers mois, je suis en mode curry. Je cuisine des currys tous les jours.
Hier, nous sommes allés dîner ici à Paris et j’ai mangé un tajine. J’ai été tellement inspirée, je crois que je vais m’y mettre.
J’aime aussi me promener avec mon chien et quand je rentre chez moi, juste aller au pub pour socialiser, pas nécessairement pour se saouler, mais juste pour l’ambiance.
Comme chaque anglais qui se respecte…
Hayley : Ah, oui, en Amérique, il y a beaucoup des bars sportifs qui sont cool mais les old fashion pubs me manquent.
Quel chien as-tu ?
Hayley : J’ai une mini pinscher croisé avec un terrier, petit et costaux avec de longues jambes. Elle aime beaucoup courir dans les bois après les écureuils… parfois elle disparait pendant dix minutes. Elle est comme moi, une aventurière – elle s’écarte du chemin mais elle revient toujours. Elle est fidèle et moi aussi. Nous sommes parfaites l’une pour l’autre.

On the occasion of the release of the self – title 5th album of Pop Evil on 16th of Febryary 2018 (review here), I had the great pleasure to meet the English drummer Hayley Cramer and discuss new album, favourite drummers, fashion, cooking or having dinner with her favourite rock star.
Meet a passionate, ambitious girl, who knows exactly what she wants. A real drum nerd.
This is the first time when you are recording with the guys, how was it?
Hayley: The way we did this album it was awesome. We toured for a year and a half, so we got to know each other pretty well, but we hadn’t written a song together yet.
Being the newest member of the band and working in the studio, allowed me to see the other side, their writing side and I also discovered the other side of me. As the writing me is different of me on stage.
The previous albums have been written while they were on tour but this time, we came back from the road, we took some time off and then we went to studio.
We were together all the time, and this really shows on the album. For every single drum sound, guitar sound, every vocal, melody, lyrics, every band member was there all the time.
We all have an influence at every point which make a better album, a more honest and true album.
Why a self -title album this time?
Hayley: The guys felt they created on this album the sound they always wanted to create and give it the time and dedication, they always wanted to.
This is the truest Pop Evil sound that you can get.
They haven’t been rushed, they are older, wiser, they know what they want, they know themselves better. The self-title is the birth and the next chapter.
For you, what is the evolution from “Up”? This time the sound is heavier, more political involved.
Hayley: On “UP” you can find some of the most successful songs that Pop Evil ever had, but it has predominantly this pop side. There was a massive number of fans who said, hey, what are you doing? where is your heavy sound?
So, it was important to make this album in a correct way. There are 2 sides of Pop Evil: the heavy one and the popular catchy side.
Onyx (3rd album) was heavy and Up (4th album) was more pop.
Now, we did the correct balance and we are conscious of that. That’s the difference – blending those 2 and finding the exact sound they always wanted to have.
As a drummer what is the more important song for you on the album?
Hayley: I think the song “Ex Machina” was a massive song for me in the studio as it really highlights the set up I had in the studio: the 3 different drums kits, set up ready to record 24/7.
I had a big rock kit, a standard one, with heavy fat sound that everyone knows. I had what I call “my weird world”, a drum kit that chills very high, I tape over it and create really weird harmonic sounds, it had strange snare drums, strange symbols, things hanging everywhere… And I had an electronic one.
On “Ex Machina” you really hear the scenes changes. It starts with the big fat kit and it reverse to those weird sounds and then the electronic one that I played underneath it.
It’s a song I am really excited to play live.
In the studio, I had a 3-drum kit and for the stage I am building a pretty much a spaceship drum kit where I am gonna condense that into one kit, slightly bigger then the last kit. I blend a lot of electronics, some side snares. There is a keyboard also, as I play piano on the album also.
Mixing all of that together is an adventure and so “Ex Machina” is a kind of demonstrate that.
Also “God’s Damn” is a song which will stay with me forever.I feel that song really capture my style of playing drums.
Forget all that kind of bells and whistles and electronic stuff, just the way I play drums is that song, that’s my jam. Some people will say that it feels like little bit TOTO on “Rosanna”.
And I will say yes, that’s my jam, I love that.
I love lots of different bands but TOTO is the big one. When I was learning to play, I wanted to have those ghost notes, that groove and feel.
What inspired you to become a drummer?
Hayley: I am from a musical family. My father is a bass player, my older brother is a drummer and my older sister is a singer.
When I was little I started with the piano then I did some singing. I tried the flute, trombone, guitar.
I liked them all but when I sat behind my brother’s kit, I suddenly knew what I need to do. I couldn’t think of anything else.
I remember what I was wearing that day, everything about sitting behind that drum kit for the 1st time that day. It was everything to me and it remained that way ever since.
I wake up every day thinking about drums and I am the happiest ever when I am just sitting behind my drum kit. I feel blessed.
I am pretty tunnel vision. I do not have a Plan B.
I think it is not right or a wrong way to live your life but I definitely feel I am the type of person who does not have a plan B.
I just have a plan A and I am gonna make it work.
How about your favourite drummer?
Hayley: Oh gosh, that’s such a hard question, there are so many – Jeff Porcaro (TOTO) as far as the groove goes. As far as live energy goes Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) – they changed me in my teens and my early 20s.
Mark Richardson (Skunk Anansie) was a big one as well. A drummer is playing big but you still have to have the soft touches. That’s the key. For me, it’s all about that ghost notes.
Steward Copeland (Police), Simon Philips… I was listening to when I was very young when I was in my mom’s car, Queen, Phil Collins…
I am total drum nerd. I did not have drum lesson every week. I am more like self-taught because when I got drums, I sat and watch drums videos and I thought myself technics. It’s a big spectrum.

What can we find in the wardrobe of a drummer queen?
Hayley: I want to be feminine but I also do a very active job, so I love jeans, T-shirts leather jackets. I wear a lot of All Saints. I feel they have the perfect kind of androgynous look to their clothes.
Their T-shirts loose fit looks perfect and I feel like I can move inside.A lot of my wardrobe is tailored around, so being able to function.
Obviously, I want to look good but I need to be on the move.
I am very pro women not totally revealing themselves when you are doing an active job. I do not want anything to detract from my music. I want to become known for my passion for music and being good of what I do musically.
Do you have something that you always have with you while you are on tour?
Hayley: MAC Foundation. It took me a long time to figure out the right foundation to stay on stage thought sweat and my long wear MAC foundation it’s an absolute must for me.
In case you have an unexpected dinner and you have to be ready in 5 minutes what would you wear?
Hayley: A nice top with a fluid texture or a bare – shoulder shirt (to show up my muscles, hahaha), a jean and good velvety jacket.
I very rarely wear a dress. I just feel so far from what I am and what I do.
And If you would go to this dinner with your favourite rock star, who will it be?
Hayley: Freddie Mercury. When I wake up in the morning at home, the first thing I looked at it’s a poster of him. Because the passion, the true honesty in him that inspires me how I want to live my life.
And just to hear him talk, his voice is smooth as chocolate but then could be so cutting.
I think it is one of the most amazing rock star, singer, songwriter. The absolute definition of genius.
Only 2 minutes with Freddie Mercury would be great.
The Art work of the album, that lion with all that stuff on his head, signs, symbols…what does it mean?
Hayley: The massive message on this album is all these things we have in mind that need to be dealt with. The Lion is the symbol of courage to embrace those things, go through and figure it out. It is also a reflection of our society and social media, the struggles and all of the information that come to us.
I love the fact that you look at it and you take one thing and another day you look again and you take another thing.
Do you have a favourite social media?
Hayley: Instagram. I am not a Twitter person, I have the Twitter because it is linked to Facebook and Instagram but I do not actually go on Twitter and write a status.It is not because I don’t have stuff to say but if I feel I have stuff to say I would actually say it and not type it.
Instagram is more where I am: capturing pictures, videos, a snap shot of where I am at.
You are starting the tour? Will you come in France?
Hayley: Yes, we start the tour in February and we really hope to come in France as there is big demand here. Paris is always coming into our discussion.
What is the most difficult for you on tour?
Hayley: Lack of sleep and just keeping the things fresh. We play same songs every night and finding what songs means for our fans, that keep you fresh as a player.
And also, constantly trying to do better, I am quite hard on myself and being on the road highlights to me all my flaws.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Hayley: At the moment, I absolutely love food. I like cooking, when I am home I like switch things. These last months I am on curry thing. I’m cooking curries every day.
Yesterday, we went out to dinner here in Paris and I had a tajine, I was so inspired by it.
I also like walking my dog and when I go home just going to pub to socialize, not necessarily to get drunk but just for the atmosphere.
As every English, right?
Hayley: Yeah, in America there are very much sports bars which are cool but I miss the old fashion pubs.
What dog do you have?
Hayley: She is a mini pinscher crossed with a terrier- small and steady with big chest and long legs. She loves woodland, she runs after the squirrels, … sometimes I cannot see her for ten minutes. She is like me an adventurous – she goes off the path but she is always coming back. She is loyal, that’s me also. We are perfect for each other.
