INTERPOL – “Turn On the Bright Lights” 15th Anniversary Tour

“Surprise, sometimes I’ll come around” this is the first line of Untitled, the opening song of the international acclaimed debut Interpol album “Turn on The Bright Lights”. And Interpol kept their promise, they came around to celebrate the 15^th anniversary of this brilliant album, playing it from start to finish in some cosy venues or at bigger summers festivals around Europe.

Since the attic of the producer Peter Katis’s home studio in Connecticut, where they recorded this album, exceptional many new music have been created, 4 albums, …but Turn On The Bright Lights will always be the special one, the fantastic declaration of love to New York, their beloved city. And this is so crazy good.

I am so in love with this album, it blew me away at every listening, every time is more addictive, more meaningful …(even if Antics, their second album, it will stay my favourite Interpol record always and forever).

So, I obviously was looking forward to see them playing it live, on the stage.

4 shows for me : Asolo ( AMA Festival in the magnificent beautiful Italian village ), London (Alexandra Palace the iconic venue ) and 2 Paris (Trianon so intimate and so romantic), I travelled sonically on the wave of this amazing sound, soaking deeper and deeper into their mesmerized ambience.

Well, the Italians and the British has the chance for longer shows – in addition to the Turn On The bright lights top to bottom, the great surprise was to listen to the new track Real Life (first time ever played in Italy), Slow hands, All the rage back home, Take me to the cruise, Lights, The Heinrich Maneuver – while Paris has been slightly disappointed with only 3 additional songs Not even jail, Specialist and Evil.

The seductive Paul Banks’s warm lazy voice, Daniel Kessler’s sharp jangling, existential and catchy guitar riffs, as well as his joyful dancing steps, Sam Fogarino’s powerful energetic drums, the New Yorkers were more beautiful than ever.

The shows are minimalist, classy, with a cinematographic, stunning, dramatic aesthetics. INTERPOL was always embraced of the Less is More, that suits them so well.

The spectacular lights have a crucial role for every song. Each one, has the it particular light and design spots : the melancholic, Untitled bathes in a blood red light with mysterious black shadows, moving around, Obstacle 1, deliver dynamic crazy energetics lights, the deep blue and romantic for New York Cares, or green light spots for Specialist.

The infections energy of PDA ” Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to”, the electrical Say Hello to the Angels, the elegant Hands Away or Obstacle 2 “I’m gonna hold your face and toast the snow that fell, because friends don’t waste wine when there’s words to say”, the stellar Stella was a diver and she was always downn, the crushing Rolland, the incredible beauty of The New, the brilliant Leif Erikson…perfect instrumentals, edgy sound, a disconcerting lyrical beauty,

Every track has it personality, narrative role, charm, space and dimensions…all the songs has their story to tell.

Dreamy, soulful, these gigs transposed us in that oneiric magistral universe. Vibes and Energy, we live the finest moments, hit by grace that brings out magical light from our hearts.

A blast. A privilege. An honour. This is an INTERPOL usual show.

Even if “It’s different now, that I’m poor and aging” (Obstacle 1), 15 years after “it’s up to you now turn on the bright lights” (NYC) …

And I will do it today, tomorrow and all the other days. Thank you. Miss You .

« Surprise, sometimes I’ll come around » c’est le premier vers d’ Untitled, le morceau qui ouvre le premier l’album de Interpol, « Turn On The Bright Lights ». Et Interpol a tenu promesse, ils sont venus pour célébrer le 15e anniversaire de cet album magnifique, en le jouant de bout en bout, dans plusieurs petites salles ou sur des festivals d’été à travers l’Europe.

Depuis le grenier à la maison du producteur Peter Katis dans le Connecticut, où ils ont enregistré cet album, ils ont écrit beaucoup d’autres chansons exceptionnelles, 4 albums, mais « Turn On The Bright Lights » restera pour toujours très spécial, car c’est une fantastique déclaration d’amour à New York, leur ville tant aimée. Et, c’est tellement bon.

J’adore cet album, il m’épate à chaque écoute. Il est devenu avec les années de plus en plus addictif… (même si ANTICS , leur second album, il restera mon préféré d’Interpol pour toujours).

Alors, j’ai adoré évidemment de les voir jouer en live sur 4 shows : Asolo (AMA Festival dans le magnifique petit village italien), Londres (Alexandra Palace, la mythique salle londonienne) et Paris, le 2 Trianon si intime et si romantique.

J’ai voyagé sur la vague de ce son fantastique et en plongeant de plus en plus profond dans ambiance si particulière et hypnotisante de leur concerts.

Et bien, les italiens et les britanniques ont eu la chance d’avoir des concerts plus longs– en plus de la totalité de l’album, la grande surprise a été d’écouter de la nouvelle chanson Real Life (première fois jamais joué en Italie), Slow hands, All the rage back home, Take me to the cruise, Lights, The Heinrich Maneuver – tandis que Paris a été un peu déçu avec seulement 3 chansons supplémentaires Not even Jail, Specialist et Evil.

La voix chaude et séduisante de Paul Banks, les guitares entêtantes, les riffs existentielles et accrocheurs de Daniel Kessler ainsi que ses joyeux pas de danses, les beats puissants de la batterie énergique de Sam Fogarino, les New-Yorkais sont plus beaux que jamais.

Le show est minimaliste et élégant, avec une esthétique cinématographique, étourdissante et dramatique. INTERPOL a toujours été adepte du Less is More, ce qui leur va si bien.

Les lumières spectaculaires ont un rôle crucial. Chaque chanson a sa lumière et spots particuliers: la mélancolique, Untitled baigne dans une lumière rouge sang avec des ombres noires mystérieuses, Obstacle1 explose dans une énergie aveuglante, New York Cares flotte dans un bleu profond et romantique et Specialiste dans les brillantes lumières vertes.

L’énergie contagieuses de PDA « Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to », l’électrique Say Hello to the Angels, l’ élégante Hands Away ou Obstacle 2 « I’m gonna hold your face and toast the snow that fell, because friends don’t waste wine when there’s words to say », la stellaire Stella was a diver and she was always down, l’écrasant Rolland, l’incroyable beauté de The New, l’éclat de Leif Erikson… parfait enchainement, roublante beauté lyrique, chaque morceau a sa personnalité, espace, rôle et interprétation, charme et dimension… chaqu’un a son histoire à raconter.

Rêverie, mélancolie, ces concerts nous ont transposés dans un univers onirique magistral. Vibes et l’énergie, nous avons vécu des moments les plus beaux, touché par une grâce qui fait ressortir la lumière de magique de nos cœurs.
