sings Johnny Stevens of Highly Suspect on Wolf, the final song of the band’s second full length album, released in November 2016.
And listening to The Boy Who died Wolf (300 Entertainment) from the beginning to the end, we have to say that the American trio is rocking and rolling out amazingly great.
But who is Highly Suspect?
A family and friendship affair: the twin brothers Rich Meyer (Bass Guitar and vocals) and Ryan Meyer (Drums and vocals) and their best friend Johnny Stevens (Singer and Guitar) grew up together in Cape Cod and formed the band in 2009.
They started by playing covers in local bars. Several Eps and 2 albums later the band cumulated not less than three nominations to Grammy Awards:
In 2016 for Mister Asylum (Best Rock Album and the Best Rock Song “Lydia”) and earlier this year for the best rock song for “My Name is Human”, taken from the “The Boy who Died Wolf”.
What do they play?
Nervy post grunge with punk and bluesy rock influences, the whole married with insanely awesome vintage guitars riffs, very Pink Floyd-esque.
Blurry, rough and distorting guitars, haunting raspy vocal, amazing drum parts and hypnotic bass line… Soulful, honest and passionate lyrics. This could be the Highly Suspect equation.
The Boy who died wolf is an adventure into various sounds and themes territories: raw and intense (My Name is Human, Look Alive Stay Alive), slowly paced tasty guitars riffs (Send me an Angel, Wolf and Serotonia), wonderful piano lines on a failed relationship story (Chicago) or the political engagement on a punky rhythm (Viper Strike).
Currently on tour in USA, they will rock out some European summer festivals this year (the full programme is here http://www.highlysuspect.net/)
In France, we will see them at Main Square Festival in Arras, on 2nd of July 2017, so we will have the unique occasion to exhibit our T-shirts and Caps with the MICD ( My Crew is Dope), the favorite Band acronym while talking about their fans.
Few months ago, I had the huge pleasure to meet the Meyer brothers, very excited to be in Paris to kick off their tour with their first headlining sold-out show in the French capital at Les Etoiles.

How did you start this Highly Suspect adventure?
Rich: We started playing music together in the basement. We learned songs as it was fun to do. We took guitars and bongos to parties and try to impress the girls. Playing music together, it has been always my favourite thing to do but, I never thought that we will do it for living. We just always do it for fun.
And one day Johnny ‘s got a gig proposal, he was going to do it by himself but he asked us to join him.
We had a bunch of songs together, we added some more to the list. So, we did the show and we really had a kick, so we wanted to do it again the next week. So, we started booking shows in different bars and getting more and more fans.
You started in the basement in Cape Cod, then you moved in NYC, in Brooklyn. How did this influence your music?
Rich: We basically had to start over when we moved to New York City. We had all these fans, friends, we basically grew together and know them for a long time. They were very loyal, they came to our shows, so we lost them. We moved to having no fans, no family, no friends in NYC. It was a brand-new thing for us.
Ryan: I think the environment definitely presents a set of influences. Being in a small beach town where there is no real tangible danger and everything is just like smoking weed and relax…that was the music that we made.
Then we moved in NYC, where is a real sense of danger, there are gun shots in your back all the time. We were young, we were starting over, we had no money. We were working hard and we were starving in a dangerous area surrounded by cultures from everywhere. So, that put an edge on our music.
If you listen to our first EP, you will understand. It definitely sounds like a different band.
Why did you choose Highly Suspect as name of the band?
Rich: It is just the way we feel about the world. It is a very suspicious, strange and untrustable place.
“The Boy who died wolf” how did you built the album. How was the evolution from Mister Asylum?
Ryan: We definitely learned a lot from our first album.
The first album was built in small bar rooms. And then, we started touring and playing music in much bigger venues and the sound is not the same.
From a drummer point of view, there is a big difference between the small rooms and the bigger rooms, the sound travels differently. We had to adapt.
We also started traveling around US, around the world, learning, meeting people, become more cultured, grow up as people…
All these influences and experiences come together and made your music.
As a person, you’re made up of these experiences and the things that you do, the thoughts that you have…
Our producer has a great quote that I love “Your music is your experiences translated to your talents”
So, after touring constantly for the first album, we become better as musicians, we gain more experiences, so when we started to do the second album we had more of both.
Will you decrypt 3 songs for me?
My Name is Human.
Rich – My name is Human is a message to people who might feel like they are oppressed and they can’t do anything about this situation. It’s saying that you can stand up for your living as you do matter, you are a person.
It is also saying that we are living in a very strange time. We are maybe still humans technically but we are all very different from the way that humans have been for a very long time.
When you look to our history, people has changed over the time but not as much as we changed in the past few decades. Because of all this stuff like cell phones, this is really crazy …we carry all this information wherever we go. We can travel around the world in 1 day and this is crazy comparing with what life was for hundreds of years ago.
We are human but we are almost not anymore. We call ourselves humans but are we really?

The video is amazing … by the way, congratulation for the song nomination to Grammy awards. Second year in arrow, how did you feel? How was the ceremony?
Ryan: We had better seats this year and we were televised. And it was an honour to lose to David Bowie that would never happen again. This happen only once one for us and this was amazing.
Send me an Angel
Rich This was the Real Life’s song for the movie called RAD, about BMX biking that came in 80 ‘s.
This song is very nostalgic for us. We used to listen to it in our parents’ minivan on the way to school, the song was playing at the school dance or in my friend’s basement. It brings back memories listening to that song.
Ryan Actually, it was Johnny’s suggestions as that movie really brings him nostalgia. He liked that song as he was really into the BMX bikes. We loved it, too. The idea putting a twist on, it that it was a really challenge, so we gave it a shot.
We cut the tempo in a half, we put our sound on it and we transformed it. I loved the way it gets out: big, open, influenced by Pink Floyd but it wasn’t our intention.
There is a particular scene in the movie. There is a BMX boy and a BMX girl and they are courting each other in a dance with their bikes and the song is playing.
This is a very romantic 80’s movie scene. It is my favourite. It’s a great movie. Makes you feel young.
And how about the FWYT – it is a bit different of the others, a Hip hop beat…
Ryan: Yeah, it comes from the writing session in Los Angeles. Rich and I were in the studio by ourselves making beats and rhythms and it was this beat that came. We worked on it, we tried to make it into a song, put parts on it but it didn’t really fit. But everyone like it.
At the end, when we made all the other songs, Joel, our producer, and Johnny re-worked the beat in the studio, adding some stuff on it, so we loved the way they make it up and so we put it on the album.
And it is great way to show to the people that we are more diverse, we are constantly progressing and making different kind of music. We are not just a rock and roll band.
We listen to everything from electro pop to classical music, from metal to reggae.
I also love Latin rhythms and for sure, we will incorporate some Latin rhythms into the next album.
Joel Hamilton, you work with him from the beginning. How did he contribute to your music?
Rich: Actually, we did not record with him from the beginning. For the first years of our career, we recorded ourselves, working with a few different engineers.
We started working with Joel when we moved to NYC.
He taught us a lot, as how to play your instruments for the song and not for yourself, which seems like a simple theory but actually is much harder to do than it is to say.
You know sometimes, you’ll say I’d like to do this, it is really cool, and people will love and they will think that I am a good musician.
I used to think of that when I was writing stuff. It has to be interesting and get people attention and all that jazz. I always used to be concerned by musicianship but actually, this is not important.
This is not necessarily helping the song. We just have to do everything to make a good song as a whole.
Ryan: He taught us music as a language. He has a great way of putting music into words which is interesting because music language is not a written language. He would say for example, you need a drum fill here and he will describe this drum fill as driving a car in a certain way.
He guides us how to go from one point of the song to one or another direction. So, if we listen to him and then we go back and listen the song, he is usually right. This guy is a genius. He wants to give the song justice so he really helped us to produce the songs.
What was the most difficult thing for you to succeed as a band, getting signed?
Ryan Well, it is still open. It’s a continuous struggle but a struggle that we like doing it. They said that getting signed is the easier part.
For us, it took 6 years and we almost broke up a thousand of times. It was incredible stressful to get signed and now we work even harder. Everything was hard but we are still together, we have the same friends group and we’ve been living together for 10 years now.
Sometimes, we are at each other throats sometimes, we are hugging. We just have to take things as they come, learn patience and look at the bigger pictures and look what you can do that and figure out the rest of it.
Social media. What do you think? Is it useful?
Ryan: It is necessary. People are oversaturated with the constant contacts and they lose their attention. If you do not show people constantly that you are alive and you are doing things by putting up tweets, snapchats, people will forget about you.
But also, they want to know more about you. There is more access to your personal life. All the time they expect you to snapchat. They want to see what you are doing. It is no longer like our rock band is probably running around into a limo and dating supermodels. They want to see that and not just imagine. It is totally necessary.
What are the next projects?
Rich: We gonna promote this album for the next year or two. So more videos, more touring . Maybe we will put out another single which will be cool. I’d like to do some collaborations also but nothing is currently in work. Right now, we are super focused on this album out but we are deeply open to do all sort of things in the future.
Do you have some artists in mind?
Rich: It would be cool to do something with Jesse Hughes, Josh Homme or something completely different like Banks or Mo.
Ryan: I’d like to do collaboration with a hip hop artist, a rapper. I really like that beat.
Rich: Maybe Kendrick Lamar liked us to make a beat for him.
Ryan: Also, weird stuff like Buna Vista Social Club could be Ok. For me, could be something of our sound style or something completely different.
Let’s see what is happening. We just want to do music.

Mais qui est donc Highly Suspect ?
Une affaire de famille et de grande amitié entre les frères jumeaux Rich Meyer (guitare basse et chant), Ryan Meyer (batterie et chant) et leur meilleur ami, Johnny Stevens (chanteur et guitare) qui grandissent ensemble à Cape Cod et décident de former le groupe en 2009.
Ils commencent par jouer de reprises dans des bars locaux. 1 EP et 2 albums plus tard, le trio cumule déjà trois nominations aux Grammy Awards. Ni plus ni moins : en 2016 pour le premier album Mister Asylum (Meilleur Album Rock et Meilleure Chanson Rock Lydia) et plus tôt, cette année pour la Meilleure chanson Rock pour My Name is Human extrait de The Boy Who Died Wolf.
Quel est leur style ?
Disons un post grunge nerveux avec des influences punk et bluesy, le tout marié avec des guitares vintage très Pink Floyd-esque.
Des guitares flues, rugueuses et distorsionnées, une voix hantée et légèrement rauque, des puissants drums beats et des lignes de basse aiguisés… Paroles mélancoliques, honnêtes et passionnés…cela pourrait être Highly Suspect en quelques mots…
Bref, écouter The Boy Who Died Wolf signifie s’aventurer dans des territoires, des sons et des thématiques variés : bruts et abrasives (My Name is Human, Look Alive Stay Alive), des guitares savoureuses (Send me an Angel, Wolf et Serotonia), des beaux accords de piano sur un échec sentimental (Chicago) ou engagement politique sur un rythme très punk (Viper Strike).

Il y a peu de temps, j’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer les frères Meyer, très heureux d’être à Paris et donner le coup d’envoi de leur tournée en tête d’affiche dans la salle comble de Les Etoiles.

Comment avez-vous commencé cette aventure Highly Suspect (hautement suspecte) ?
Rich : Nous avons commencé à jouer de la musique ensemble dans le sous-sol de notre maison. Nous avons appris des chansons pour s’amuser. Et puis, nous essayons d’impressionner les filles avec de guitares et des bongos. Nous avons toujours joué de la musique ensemble. En fait, je n’ai jamais pensé que nous allons le faire pour vivre mais juste pour le plaisir.
Un jour, Johnny a obtenu un engagement pour un concert. Il devrait le faire tout seul, mais il nous a demandé de se joindre à lui.
On a rajouté des chansons à ceux que nous avions déjà et nous avons fait le show. On a tellement aimé qu’on a voulu le refaire tout de suite, la semaine d’après. Et donc, les réservations de shows dans les bars ont démarré et on a commencé à avoir de plus en plus de fans.
Vous avez commencé dans le sous-sol de Cape Cod et ensuite avez déménagé à New York, à Brooklyn ? Comment est-ce que cela a influencé votre musique ?
Rich : Nous avons dû recommencer tout dès le début quand nous avons déménagé à New York. Tous ces fans fidèles et amis avec qui nous avons pratiquement grandi ensemble, nous les avons perdus.
A New York nous n’avions pas de fans, pas de famille, aucun ami. C’était quelque chose tout à fait nouveau pour nous.
Ryan : Je pense que l’environnement a eu certainement un ensemble d’influences sur notre musique. Être dans une petite ville côtière tranquille où il n’y a aucun danger réel et tangible, juste fumer de l’herbe et se détendre, c’est un peu la musique que nous avons faite au début.
Puis nous sommes partis vivre à New York, où il y a est un réel sentiment de danger. Il y a coups de feu dans ton dos tout le temps. Nous étions jeunes, fauchés… Nous avons travaillé dûr et nous étions affamés dans une zone dangereuse, entourée de différentes cultures.
Alors tout cela a mis un peu de nerf dans notre musique. Si vous écoutez notre premier EP, entre cette musique et notre premier album, on dirait vraiment un group différent.
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi Highly Suspect comme nom du groupe ?
Rich : C’est notre façon de voir ce monde : un endroit très suspect, étrange, pas digne de confiance.
Comment votre musique a évolué entre Mister Asylum et The Boy Who Died Wolf ?
Ryan : Nous avons certainement beaucoup appris de notre premier album. Le premier album a été construit dans des petits bars, dans des petites salles… Et puis, nous avons commencé à jouer, partir en tournée et nous avons commencé à jouer dans des lieux beaucoup plus grands et le son n’est pas la même.
D’un point de vue de batteur, il y a une grande différence entre les petites salles et les grands arénas. Le son se propage différemment. Et donc, on a dû s’adapter.
Nous avons aussi commencé à voyager à travers les États-Unis, à travers le monde, apprendre, rencontrer des gens. On est devenus plus cultivés et on a grandi comme des personnes…
Bref, après la tournée pour Mister Asylum, je dirais qu’on est devenu meilleurs en tant que musiciens et on a gagné plus d’expérience.
Pourriez- vous décrypter 3 chansons pour moi ?
My Name is Human
Rich : My Name is humain est un message aux personnes qui pourraient se sentir opprimés et ils ne peuvent rien changer à cette situation. C’est comme dire que tu dois défendre ta vie car ta vie importante, tu le mérites, tu es une personne.
Elle parle aussi de ces temps très étranges que nous vivons. Nous sommes peut-être encore des humains sur le plan technique, mais nous sommes très différents des humains d’autre fois.
Si on regarde notre histoire, l’humanité a changé à travers les époques mais pas autant que nous avons changé dans les dernières décennies.
Parce que ces choses-là, comme les téléphones portables, c’est vraiment dingue. Nous portons toute cette information avec nous partout où nous allons.
Nous pouvons voyager autour du monde en 24 h et c’est fou en comparaison avec ce que la vie était-il y a des centaines d’années.
Nous sommes humains, mais nous ne les sommes presque plus.
Nous nous appelons encore des humains, mais le sommes-nous vraiment ?

La video est magnifique et d’ailleurs félicitations pour la nomination de la chanson aux Grammy awards.
C’est la deuxième année de suite pour vous. Qu’avez-vous ressenti ? Comment a été la cérémonie ?
Ryan : Nous avons eu des meilleures places cette année et nous sommes passée à la télé aussi.
Ce fut un honneur de perdre face à David Bowie, chose qui n’arriverait plus jamais. Ceci se produit seulement une fois et pour nous et cela a été incroyable.
Deuxième chanson : Send me an Angel
Rich : C’est la chanson du film des années 80, RAD sur les vélos BMX. C’est une chanson très nostalgique pour nous. On l’écoutait dans la fourgonnette de nos parents sur le chemin de l’école, au dancing de l’école ou dans le sous-sol de nos amis. Elle nous rappelle plein de souvenirs.
Ryan : En fait, c’était l’idée de Johnny car ce film lui donne vraiment beaucoup de nostalgie. Mais nous aimons tous cette chanson et l’idée de la retravailler a été un vrai défi.
Nous avons coupé le tempo à moitié, nous avons mis notre empreinte là-dessus et nous l’avons transformé.
J’aime beaucoup le résultat : le son est grand et ouvert et il y a ces influences Pink Floyd, mais ce n’était pas notre intention.
Il y a une scène en particulier dans le film. Il y a un garçon et une fille qui se courtisent dans une danse avec leurs vélos BMX et la chanson joue.
C’est une scène très romantique. C’est ma préféré. Ça te fait sentir jeune de nouveau.
Et FWYT – c’est un peu différent des autres, un Hip Hop beat…
Ryan : Oui, elle sort d’une session d’écriture à Los Angeles. Rich et moi étions dans le studio faire des rythmes et ce beat est sorti. Nous avons travaillé là-dessus, nous avons essayé d’en faire une chanson, mettre les parties là-dessous, mais ça ne marchait pas vraiment. Mais tout le monde aimait ce beat.
À la fin, quand nous avons fait toutes les autres chansons de l’album, Johnny et Joel, notre producteur, ont retravaillé le beat dans le studio, ils ont rajouté des trucs et nous avons aimé le résultat.
En plus, c’était un excellent moyen de montrer aux gens que nous sommes plus diversifiés, nous sommes constamment en train de progresser et nous pouvons faire aussi d’autre types de musique. Nous ne sommes pas juste un groupe de rock.
On écoute de tout : de l’électro pop au reggae, du métal à la musique classique.
J’aime les rythmes latino et surement, nous en utiliser pour le prochain album.
Vous travaillez avec Joel Hamilton, votre producteur, dès le début. Comment a-t-il contribué à votre musique ?
Rich : En fait, on n’a pas enregistré avec lui dès le début. Pendant les premières années de notre carrière, nous avons enregistré nous-mêmes, en collaborant avec quelques ingénieurs différents.
Nous avons commencé à travailler avec Joel lorsque nous avons déménagé à New York. Il nous a appris beaucoup de choses. Comme la façon de jouer nos instruments pour la chanson et pas pour nous-même, ce qui ressemble à une théorie simple mais en réalité, il est beaucoup plus difficile à le faire qu’à le dire.
Parfois, tu diras, tiens je vais jouer un truc vraiment cool et les gens vont adorer et ils vont penser que je suis un bon musicien. J’avais l’habitude d’être préoccupé par la musicalité mais en fait, ce n’est pas important.
Cela ne va pas nécessairement aider la chanson. Il suffit juste de faire le maximum pour obtenir une bonne chanson dans son ensemble.
Ryan : Joel nous a appris la musique comme une langue. Il a un excellent don de mettre la musique en mots, ce qui est génial, parce que la musique n’est pas une langue écrite.
Si par exemple, il y a besoin d’une partie batterie pour remplir un espace dans la chanson, il te la décrira comme quelqu’un qui t’explique comment conduire une voiture d’une certaine manière.
Ce mec est un génie. Il veut toujours donner de la justice à la chanson. Il nous a vraiment aidé à produire nos chansons.
Quelle a été la chose la plus difficile pour vous de réussir comme groupe, d’être signé avec votre label ?
Ryan : Le sujet est toujours ouvert. C’est une lutte continue mais un combat que nous aimons faire. Ils nous ont dit que se faire signé était la partie plus facile.
Pour nous, il a fallu 6 ans. On a failli se séparer des milliers de fois.
C’était très stressant d’être signé et maintenant, nous travaillons encore plus qu’avant.
Tout a été difficile, mais nous sommes toujours ensemble, nous avons le même groupe d’amis et nous vivons ensemble depuis une dizaine d’années.
Parfois, on se saute à la gorge, parfois, on se serre dans les bras.
Il faut juste prendre les choses comme elles sont, apprendre la patience et regarder le monde en plus grand et voir ce que vous pouvez faire et comprendre le reste.
Médias sociaux. Qu’en pensez- vous ? C’est utile ?
Ryan : Il est nécessaire. Les gens sont saturés avec autant de contacts constants et ils ont besoins qu’on attire leur attention.
Si vous ne montrez pas aux gens sans cesse que vous êtes vivant et que vous faites des choses avec de tweets, des snapchats, etc … ils vous oublieront.
Mais aussi, ils veulent en savoir plus sur vous. Il y a plus d’accès à votre vie personnelle. Ils veulent voir ce que vous faites.
Ils ne sont plus là juste imaginer que leur groupe de rock préféré est probablement en train de faire un tour en limousine et ou qu’ils sortent avec de mannequins. Ils veulent le voir concrètement et pas seulement l’imaginer. Donc, les médias sociaux sont absolument nécessaire.
Quels sont les prochains projets ?
Rich : On va promouvoir cet album pour les prochaines deux années. On fera plus de vidéos, plus de concerts. Peut-être un nouveau single. Ce sera cool.
J’aimerais faire quelques collaborations aussi. Rien n’est en cours pour l’instant, mais nous sommes ouverts à faire toutes sortes de choses à l’avenir.
Vous avez quelques artistes en tête ?
Rich : ça serait cool de faire quelque chose avec Jesse Hughes, Josh Homme ou quelque chose de complètement différent, comme Banks ou Mo.
Ryan : Moi, j’aimerais une collaboration avec un artiste de hip hop, un rappeur. J’aime vraiment ce beat.
Rich : Peut-être Kendrick Lamar voudras qu’on fasse un truc ensemble.
Ryan : Aussi, des trucs bizarres comme Buna Vista Social Club social sera Super.
En fait, cela pourrait être quelque chose de même style que le nôtre ou quelque chose de complètement différent. Nous allons voir ce qui va arriver.
On veut juste faire de la musique.
